Erica Pray...so sweet and for a "first time" with her, she did a great job with cut and color.
True, I did go back for a touch-up two weeks post haircut, but only because I didn't stick my guns about needing "more layers" in the first place. But she nailed the color.
So she was kind enough to squeeze me in on a Saturday to do the touch-up no charge.
I typically have a one track mind and only so much ability to take in so much at one time, so I didn't pay too much attention to other things about the salon itself...maybe next time.
I rate this place a three.
1) I dropped my wife off to get her hair done at 3:00 pm on a Saturday.
2) I picked her up at Six PM.
3) That is THREE hours later.
Jokes regarding this bandied among two bros:
me: "Yo, my wife has been in there for three hours dude"
bro: "What are they doing, transplanting someone elses hair on her?"
me: "Maybe they are snipping one strand of hair at a time."
bro: "At the price she paid for that haircut, you better be glad they took three hours"
5 stars minus 2 stars, for taking that long = 3 stars, because they did a fab job on the wife despite taking 180 minutes to do so.
She went to Lauren, and my wife gushed about her...that and how lame the receptionist was.
Hey receptionist...don't shoot the messenger.
One final note: I dropped her off, and could barely find the place behind all the Bamboo stalks out front...I guess that was a sign, huh?
I used to hate my hair....curly, frizzy, wild. So I straightened it. Then I moved here from Philly about 6 years ago and had a decision to make....straighten it again or let it go natural! I walked into Bamboo (because I liked the way it looked from the outside, and they carried Bumble & Bumble products), and met with Alex, who listened to my dilemma and checked out my hair, and suggested I try letting my hair do what it wanted to do. Six years later I am still extremely happy with that decision. Alex really understands the nuances and characteristics of different types of hair, and brings out the best in her clients. Highly recommend Alex at Bamboo!
12/08 UPDATE: I now hear they've been spreading false and defamatory rumors about my hair gal Linda... what kind of place does that? Not a cleanly managed salon, that's for sure.... don't go here. There are at least 15 hair places in this part of town -- without the BS. I'd run like mad before I'd step foot in Bamboo again!
8/19/08 UPDATE: Poor management (or the lack of management I should say) at Bamboo finally forced Linda to leave for new digs... I'll post her new salon as soon as she lands! She is STILL the best cut and colour gal in town and Bamboo Salon will never be the same. Their loss.

Linda Barnes is the best colour gal in town... the kind of cuts and colour that make people ask where you get your hair done. I've been seeing Linda for almost 8 years and while she charges a lot, I've never regretted paying all that money -- she is worth every penny. She is terrific.
The first two years she did what I asked her to do... then I finally gave in and let her do what she wanted, and my hair has never looked so good. My husband loves it, my friends always give me compliments and strangers tell me I have great hair -- best thing is: no one but Linda knows I'm almost totally grey. Oh, and she's a hoot. I love her!
One visit for cut and color at Bamboo was enough for me. If you're okay with completely average cut and color, then you should probably stop reading this review ... now! I'm a firm believer in paying good money for good services, so I was uber-disappointed when my stylist turned out to possess little skill and a hefty price tag.
Negativity aside, the decor is beautiful and staff members are all very friendly!
My neighbor recommended this place, and I tried it out since it was walking distance from my house. This was 4 years ago, and I'm still a loyal customer. I like the casual atmosphere and friendly staff. Kevin Neal cuts my hair and is fantastic! I have thick, wavy hair and he works magic with it. I always feel like a new person when i walk out of there. Everyone I've sent there has also had a great experience.
I love Erica! She is the coolest! She can wash, cut and dry my hair in 35 minutes flat-- a record! She's so fast that I was able to get my hair did on my lunch break! Amazing. Plus, she does an excellent job with the cut (duh-- otherwise I wouldn't go back) and color (highlights). She's really good at layering my hair so that my jew-fro doesn't poof up and make me look like a triangle head (she has thick hair, too, so she totally gets it). Sometimes, my visits are so quick that I wish they were a 'lil bit longer because I like being there so much! Plus, it's well priced ($60 plus tip), accessible (up the hill from the 5) and I can usually find parking at one of the meters out front.
I have been going to Bamboo for years, Steve is awesome!!!! can't help with all the other color cut stuff yet I see some HAPPY faces leaving Bamboo and the people are sooooo friendly!!!!
I love this salon and Lauren is the best! She's honest, talented and super accommodating. In addition to great hair cuts, she takes the time to show me different hair styles. She even showed me how to french braid. :) I always recommend friends to see her. You won't be disappointed!
I've been going to Erin for several years now. She left us (sniff!) to go to New York, but now she's back, and I couldn't be happier! Erin knows what she's doing. She's professional, friendly, funny, and she listens to what I want. I not only have a good time while I'm there, but I walk away looking HOT!
Bamboo is the best, it has by far the best hair dresser as well awesome architechual design inside. I love the real bamboo inside, Steve is awesome, I've been going to Bamboo for close to ten years.
Lauren Cates has been giving me the best cuts and color I have ever had the past 4 months. I have never had so many people love my hair and ask who did it! She knows how to blend the edgy/ classy look that I like. My color always is matched with my skin perfectly. Lauren you are gifted!
The first couple of times I went here I saw Erin and she was amazing! She helped me get my hair back on track! So SAD...she moved to New York and I had to go to someone different in the salon. Unfortunately he was not anywhere near as good as her. I took pictures and came out with a cut that didn't look anywhere near the pictures. I was so disappointed! Plus their front desk help is so not helpful!! Going to try Diesel Salon...fingers crossed that it goes better.
i've always been very indecisive about my hair. i personally thought i had horrible hair so no matter what i did to it, it would look bad anyway. my friend recommended linda barnes and since i was in the area i decided to give her a try. i have never in my life been more happy with my haircut, its like she read my mind! she is amazing!!! she knew exactly how to handle my hair and gave me recommendations on how to care for it. my coworkers all thought there was something different about me, but couldn't tell i had gotten highlights because linda made them look so natural! did i mention she's amazing? i will definitely be driving all the way from leucadia to have linda do my hair, definitely worth the money!
Please do yourself a favor and go to this salon and ask for Lauren. She is an amazing stylist and beyond that she has the most awesome personality. Once you go to her you'll never go to anyone else again! She is always spot-on with the color and cut of my hair, I love it! She takes her time to make sure you get what you want. I always leave the salon feeling like a movie star! I love the atmosphere of the shop as well - all the bamboo inside and outside is awesome. I've been to many salons and hair stylists and this is as good as it gets! You won't be dissappointed.
Erin Winter has been doing my hair for several years, even when she moved to NYC. Thank god she's back. She does my color so naturally that people can't believe it's not real. I drive all the way from Chula Vista for Erin. She's just the best.
Kevin N was recommended to me when he was at another salon, and I was so happy with his work that I followed him when he moved to Bamboo. Kevin does a wonderful job with cutting and styling, with coloring and highlighting. I highly recommend him. The staff at Bamboo are very friendly and welcoming, as well.
