17 reviews for Baluchi's
Baluchi's is a beautiful restaurant. The decor is really fun!
Our waiter was very nice and attentive throughout our meal and on a Sunday evening the restaurant was pretty packed.
The food was okay. I enjoyed my meal but it wasn't the best Indian food I've ever had. However, it wasn't the worst either. It was also surprisingly expensive. The price adds up quickly because you have to order rice or nan separately.
This place (at the moment) is a solid 3 stars. While the decor is fantasticly done, with very cushy seating and nice outdoor area in the back the food is terribly lacking in terms of quantity. The bread, if not rice should be an absolute staple in any dish you order. I sort of knew what I was getting into when I read the other reviews when it came to them nickel and diming the "side" dishes, but I had a good time with my friend so I didn't want to ruin the mood of the evening.
The whole fish (red snapper) was alright - didn't taste like anything special besides a fish tossed on a grill. The shrimp curry was terribly dissappointing for the price. $14 for 5 mediocre lumps of shrimp in a tiny bowl? Please. With the fact that it actually doesn't come with rice or bread?! Food wise though, the naan, rice, and curry (albiet not spicy enough) was good.
I overheard one of the patrons naturally responded when he asked "Do you want bread?" with a baffled look "It doesn't come with it?" The waiter, shyly and hesitantly replied that he can give it to them.
Get it together folks! People like bread!!! INCLUDE IT!!!
Furthermore, as a business owner - I am not too sure about the elaborate seating. It seems as if the cushy seats have silk pillows on them and I'd hate to be the one to have to clean curry out of a bad spill...
This place however hopes to be popping if they ever get a liquor liscence.
$66 for Red Snapper, Shrimp Curry, Rice, Naan bread, and two yogurt drinks.
Bland. Bland. Bland. That's the best way to describe Baluchi's Indian food.
I've heard the stories that there's no decent Indian food in Park Slope, but I had a craving for some food from the Old Country, and Baluchi's was the closest place around.
I ordered seekh kebabs, crab curry and shrimp biryani for takeout. The best I can say about the food is that it was warm.
The seekh kebabs were OK -- pretty hard to messy those up. The crab curry, billed on the menu as spicy, had plenty of crab but no kick whatsoever. The shrimp biryani was just plain flat, basically rice and shrimp. And the nan was far too chewy.
Very disappointed. I won't be back.
I am really not a fan of eating North Indian food in restaurants, because I come from a lineage of sensational cooks with daaaangerous skills in the kitchen. However, lately - I have been deprived of home cooking and developed panging cravings for something that feels like home. I have no choice, but to man up and brave the perilous world of "commercially prepared" Indian cuisine. Now, the problem I have with many Indian food reviewers is that they seem to prefer the greasy, creamy, over seasoned, 2 buck chuck Indian food. Sorry - that ain't home to this brown chick. On a rare-bombay-blue-sapphire-moon night, when I do go out for Indian food - I am looking for non-greasy, appropriately flavored food - minus staunchy-stare-ridden service.
Everything I have ordered at this Baluchis has been quite tasty: the chutney and papad, the paneer tikka, the multi-flavored naans... (My favorites were onion and garlic...u know to keep all the predators avay!) So far, my favorite dishes have been the baingan bhartha and the baluchis daal. :::Kya tasty, yaar!::: The service here is top notch, really the staff is a well-oiled (but not greasy) machine of attentive service. Your water glass will not remain empty for long, your requests will be met promptly and you will receive solid recommendations.
Just because a bunch of "self-identified gringos aka goras" have low-balled the stars, I'm giving this place an extra star. Hehe, you know, gotta stick it to da man! :::fist in the air for mah brown brothas in tha BK::: Alright, alright... I kid and digress... but - Bottomline, Baluchis is the BEST Indian in Park Slope....and most likely Brooklyn.
Please note: They are currently BYOB as they wait for a liquor license, take advantage of this and I recommend a bottle of Carmenere. :)
For a quick fix of Indian food that won't give you heartburn or fall short of spicy, Baluchi's @ Park Slope fits the bill. Stick with the basics and order the lamb skewers and veggie samosas as starters. The fish dishes lack taste other than your standard curry paste so ur better off with chicken. Remember BYOB. With Indian food stick with beer but if u do choose wine stick with a light wine preferably dry Reisling. Enjoy!
I had lunch today in Baluchi's. I thought the food was fine. We opened with samosas, I had a chicken spinach dish, Saagwala, my date had chicken curry. We also ordered poori. I thought the food was very good. My chicken chunks were very moist and the spinach sauce/puree it was served in nicely flavored. The chicken curry was mildly spicy and flavorful. The naan fluffy and steam filled. The samosas were a bit bland.
I liked the dark decor with a ton of mirrors, perfect for my self obsessed neighbors. There were mirrors on the ceiling and a rose petal and floating candle filled baptismal font on the floor. Colorful light fixtures hung from the ceiling, it was like some Pasha's love nest.
Lunch was 25% off the dinner menu, with tip we spent $30. The service was fine we were the only patrons. Baluchi's is a small chain with outlets in Manhattan and one in Queens
We ordered from this place, as we have in the past, conveniently online, but when our food arrived we found a few things amiss. The rice seemed smaller, no sauce on the samosas (which had normally been provided) and there was no naan bread that used to accompany the meals. We called out of curiousity and because having the naan accompaniment is so key to any indian meal. They apparently charge for the naan now. Normally not a stickler for things like this but cutting back on services with their prices just doesnt meld right. I will not be ordering for Baluchi's again. So sad too because this way my favorite Indian spot in the slope.

Delivery in Park Slope, so decided to give it a try because I was on an Indian food kick. Since then… Read more »
I love this place. Park Slope is inundated with "Asian Fusion" restaurants, so this beautiful Indian joint is welcome if not simply because it offers something different. I know its a bit of a chain with locations throughout Manhattan as well, but you wouldn't know it by the way the staff seems to take pride and care for the food and the customers.
I love this place. My hubby and I went to Baluchi's for dinner last week. I got the Lamb Handi and my hubby got the Bhartha for entrees. Both are very tasty. The service is excellent. No complaints!! I would recommend to all my friends. I already told my sister that I will take her to Baluchi's for dinner when she come visit.
Aside from the decor, the experience was pretty lame. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet our order was mixed up somehow and caused a 15+ minute wait. When our dinner finally came, the portions were small and the food was totally unmemorable (and pricier than other, much more delicious Indian restaurants). I guess the lesson I keep learning is that when craving Indian food in Park Slope, get on a subway and find it elsewhere.
I ordered food...but where are the actual contents??? Beware of being short-changed and beware of filler.
First of all, I wanted to order goat masala for delivery, and the menu states that it's $10...but over the phone they tell me it's like $13 or $15, something like that. Weird. It's not like their menu is from years ago; I took their menu from the restaurant a few days ago.
So after they told me the above, I decided to go with the lamb vindaloo. It comes in a plastic pint container. Upon opening up the container and eating some of the contents, I realize: (1) the container is mostly filled with sauce, and (2) the actual few contents are made up of filler/cheap stuff, like potatoes! There are actually very few meat pieces in this dish!
I felt ripped off.
I will start out with the obligatory "I wanted to give 3.5 stars but since Yelp doesn't do..." My lunch was a mixed bag. I ordered tomato soup, a side of okra, goat masala, rice and some puffed bread.
The soup was pretty good. The texture felt like a combined canned mixed with fresh but with the addition of fresh pepper, garlic and cilantro it came out as a nice starter. Baluchi's goat is also very tasty, it has a strong game flavor and combined with the masala sauce it makes for a pretty good main course. However, you don't get much meat because it's served on the bone, I'm guessing it's the tail or back, and because it's on the bone it can get quite messy on your hands. Not a big deal to me. I will say based on the one experience to go for the puffed bread rather than the rice when the waiter asks you your choice. All the rice does is fill you up, it doesn't have much taste. The puffed bread on the other hand comes out steaming hot and has a very pleasant firm, somewhat oily and medium nutty texture and taste. I saved the okra for last which may have been a mistake because it cooled down and the texture became very firm. The sauce itself was good so I will give Baluchi's the benefit of the doubt that the okra must be eaten immediately.
The interior is touristy, like Artesana of Park Slope invaded. I do love their light fixtures though. Service is friendly and the atmosphere relaxed.
This is a good restaurant for gringos because Baluchi's seems to keep enough spice/heat in their food so it's not caustic and at the same time not dumbed down to a level where it's insulting you because they figure Americans can't handle the heat. And like I say the food is certainly seasoned well to the point where the pepper makes a nice balance. What I am dying to try is their employee only fried chicken. When I was leaving I noticed the waiter noshing on a plate of fried chicken and rice, when I questioned him about it he said the chef knows Chinese cuisine as well and that it's strictly for employees only. I have to tell you it looked really good.
Great naan, great service, reasonably priced, and a great atmosphere. Very impressed overall.
i tried it again,
but it's still as shitty as
the other branches
The best thing I can say about Baluchi's is they sure delivered the food fast! I ordered it for delivery to my hotel and 20 minutes later they were knocking on my door. However, I was not impressed with the food. I ordered the chicken tikka masala. It had way too much ginger in it. It also could have used some more cream in the sauce. But not having to go out after a long day was nice.
This was good, not great, Indian. Had some basics like Chicken Tikka and Saag Panir - both of which weren't bad. There wasn't really anything bad about any of the food, it just wasn't great either. The service was very mediocre considering there was only one other table until just before we left. You'd think with a mostly empty restaurant (it was snowing out so I wasn't too concerned with that), we'd get a lot of attention, but not so much.
I kind of liked the decor. My kids totally liked the couch like chair we had.
Best Indian food I've had in Park Slope. Granted, that's not a terribly high accomplishment, but it's good to have something at least passable around here. The prix-fixe delivery for $15 (appetizer, entree, and naan) is a good deal too. Food wasn't anywhere near great Indian, but it was passable, and with the other Indian food options in the area, that warrants an extra star.
