I knew I'd be up in Rockville doing my climbing thing at EarthTreks this morning so I had the brilliant idea of going up to Baltimore Cupcake Company right after. I figured I was already so far from home, I should make the haul out to Olney. It turns out that Baltimore Cupcake Company is housed in one of the rooms of Open Invitations, the specialty gifts and stationery store. They bake the cupcakes in the store in Baltimore and deliver them to this satellite location to sell. The downside is that they're pre-packaged in groups of two and six so you're at mercy of whichever flavors they put in each package.
For $3 each, I got:
*Kahlua & Cream
*Bailey's Caramel Truffle
*Cookies & Cream
*Irish Mint
I hosted a tasting last night with two friends and the resounding response was "meh". The cupcakes look divine but the taste and textures are disappointing. My biggest criticism is the grittiness of the frosting and each cupcake was 1/3 to 2/3 frosting. There was a lot of leftover frosting on our plates. The only passable one was the Kahlua & Cream and it was because there was tasty ganache in the center. The others tasted funky and didn't taste like their descriptions - maybe it was all the food coloring...
