Ballentrae is one of my favorite golf courses in the Birmingham area. This is a semi-private club that was built by the City of Pelham. The course has been open for only a couple of years, but it already has great character. The beautiful clubhouse and course have a Scottish theme. The clubhouse looks like a medieval castle and there is a standalone turret that is viewable from several holes.
The course winds through a new housing development where some gorgeous homes are being built. The course is spread out and all of the holes have some elevation changes. Walking this course would be difficult. The greens are Bermuda, and have gotten better over time. The front nine has three par 3s and three par 5 holes. The course has a killer finishing hole. It is a par 4 that plays 438 yards from the III tees. The drive is from a high overlook down to an open valley. From the valley the fairway is all uphill to the green. The green is protected by a sand bunker that is located front left.
The course is kept in great shape, and I have always received excellent service from the staff. The only negatives I have are it is somewhat hard to get to from the interstate (I-65) and it is relatively expensive (around $65 on the weekends). From the interstate you have to wind through numerous residential neighborhoods and stop signs.
