Oh Ballard Pet Store, where do I begin...

My ex-roommate purchased her Westie puppy, Kevin, from Ballard Pet Store early this fall.  He came from a breeder *coughpuppymillcough* in Nebraska.  Don't even get me started on the subject of buying puppies from pet stores vs. reputable breeders/shelters, or on his chocolate-pudding-like shat that coated my entire apartment (sorry, off-topic).  When she bought Kevin the owner didn't tell her about the "no return/refund policy" until she asked specifically.

As for the pet store itself; I was completely unimpressed.  When ever I've been in there, the place has stunk like little puppy poo-poo.  I'm not sure if this can be avoided with all the dogs in there, but it sure makes for an unpleasant shopping experience.

Their selection of...well...everything leaves much to be desired.  They carry a limited variety of foods, a few accessories and a little rack of books.

I also noticed that they just started offering daycare and boarding at the store.  I have no experience with this, but I wouldn't trust my dog-baby within 10 feet of these guys.

The one good thing about this place is they sell Frontline/Advantage/Advantix individually.  This doesn't seem too professional to me (considering the dude behind the counter just opens the box and hands you the little vial with no instructions or anything), but it's come in handy in the past when I didn't have $50 to buy the 4-pack at other pet stores.

I am slow in updating this, but they are closed!   I know the owner was ill some months ago, so maybe this is the reason.  Or perhaps...just perhaps...people also FINALLY STOPPED buying puppies from these people.  Whatever the reason, thank God.
    YAY!!!!!

UPDATE: I spoke with Ballard Pet Store Owner Norm Blacksher this morning and he expressed genuine concern for Beans and agreed to help me cover her vet bills.  While I don't feel this excuses the situation, I do give him credit for responding promptly and offering to do what he can to help.

On October 3, 2007, I purchased a female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy (approx 9 weeks old at the time) for $1,190.00.  At the time of purchase I was told she had been given her shots and was in general good health.  The same night I brought her home I noticed a cough, and as instructed by Ballard Pet Store, I took her to the vet the next day.  As of her first full day home, her condition literally started to deteriorate by the hour.  Despite two consecutive vet visits within 24 hours, 2x daily steam treatments and starting on antibiotics, within three days of purchase she was diagnosed as having kennel cough, viral pneumonia and a partially collapsed left lung, all a result of poor care at the hands of the Ballard Pet Store, prior to my purchase.

In the first three months of ownership, I have paid $2,164.30 on vet bills, four different antibiotics and a trip to Access Emergency Vet Hospital - all directly related to her condition. (this is excluding the cost of two vet visits/month I'm chalking up to reasonable care of a puppy).  I have also missed approximately two weeks of work, countless hours of sleep (round the clock care) and suffered emotional distress while watching this puppy fight for life and breath.

Please CONTACT ME if you have had a similar experience with this business.

We purchased our dog here several years ago and even though it says "new management", they are just changing the names and keeping it literally in the family. The place is a vast improvement from year's past where there would be like 4 dogs in a cage the size for your kitchen sink.  We still stop in every once in a while to make sure dogs are happy. I am not one to hesitate calling the Animal Cops if there is any sign of mistreatment or violation of health codes.  Although their kennels are slightly bigger than before,  it is a fact this place buys from puppy mills about 75% of the time.  The dog we bought was very sweet and we are glad we have her but honestly, if you saw the places these dogs initially come from you would not buy from this type of place. My suggestion is to go to a breeder, look in the paper or go to the pound.
Their selection of items is very weak. I highly suggest going to Mud Bay or other chain pet stores for your supplies.
As for doggie daycare - YEAH RIGHT! Playcare is the way to go - The barking lounge provides EXCELLENT care!
