Awesome pizza, great owner, fun place!

We had our daughter's birthday party where all the kids got to make their own personal pizza. They loved getting their hands in there and the pizzas were great.

In the category of "mainstream US pizza", I'm giving this joint 4 out of 5 "estrellas!" Why? Because there's this grilled/chared flavor that I tasted either from the cheese being top-burned, or the dough? And as "plebicite/common US pizza" goes, it was pretty good. And no... we aren't dealing with "artisan pizza" or "NY-Chicago style pizza."  It's just really hearty, generous helpings on top of what we had; medium thick pies.

It was my grandson's birthday last Saturday, and our youngest daughter sponsored a small group of about 20 kids and adults, complete with a cheese pizza the size of a tire off a Ford F-250, and a couple side vegetarian and Hawaiian pizzas.

If you've not visited this location, which I hadn't, and you've done other local pizza joints, I bet you'll prefer Ballpark over at least the other 80% chain and private shops in the area. Had it not been for my grandson's party, I might never had added this to my list of "pretty good" pizza joints.

And BTW, if you've visited and raved about Pizza and Vino near the RSM Lake, know that our large group had a bad experence there last year. So don't get all "brick oven snobbish" on me. Even the fancy houses can sometimes fall down in performance. After chatting with the owner, and his apologies, I pulled my detailed/negative review. I felt it was probably an anomoly. (I don't like to base a negative review on one visit... although I have had some incredibly horrible experiences that just couldn't be ignored.) So in my book, even "consistent mediocrity" sometimes trumps "inconsistent greatness." Am I being fair enough here? :-)

As a kid, Ball Park Pizza (often called by just its first name, Ball Park) was the go-to place for all my Little League team parties and Friday family fun nights. Ball Park's motley collection of sports memorabilia is worth a small fortune and makes this pizzeria more like a sports pub that's safe for the entire family. I used to go for the arcade games, the mini basketball hoop game, and I used to ROCK the claw game. Nowadays I go for a more necessary reason: to fend off starvation. My weapon of choice: wholesome greasy pizza.

The pizza is unique and classic at the same time. The crust is neither soft nor crispy, but sturdy enough to support the weight of toppings they mound up. (Seriously, guys, they don't skimp on toppings here). The pie runs down the pizza oven tunnel of love for a sizzling finish before sliding into home at your table. I'm a person who thinks pineapple on pizza is not only permitted but is also genius, so I go for the Hat Trick pizza, strewn with pepperoni, pineapple, and Canadian bacon all atop a bed of sauce and cheese. Wouldn't you like to lay down on that at the end of the day? The sauce has a zing to it, and as a kid I remember it being more than I could handle, but I kinda really like it now. My favorite part of each pizza is the outside edge of the crust. Here it's not a puffy crust, not at all; the crust is a consistent thickness across the entire pie. At the edges, some bits of sauce creep out from under their cheesy cover and get cooked and almost taste smokey. Delicious!

For all you winos, you can get your alcohol fill here while you scarf pizza, and (more importantly) all you sports fans can watch your favorite teams play their hearts out on one of the many televisions on hand. Expect to pay in the ballpark (heh) of $24 for a large pizza. It costs more than Round Table, but a hard-earned dollar spent here will come back to you in spades when you take your first bite.

I have not found another pizzeria that does it better than Ball Park. The nostalgia might be part of it--I grew up coming here and have invested a lot of memories and caloric intake here. But there's no bias or question about it when I say that the flavor of pizza at Ball Park Pizza is outstanding. You don't want miss this place if you're in town and looking for good pizza. It's a must-do in a town that has little else to do.

So went here yesterday for some pizzeria food. Good atmosphere small joint but has arcade games and bench and booth style seating. A few tvs to watch the games. I ordered wings and fries and alsoa chicken ceasar salad. The wings I would have to say were slightly disappointing. They were very small and had no spice. The fries were good thick cut with skin on. The salad was what you could expect from a place that specializes in pizza. Although I did see them make and bring out many pizzas and they looked delicious. Huge amounts of toppings not to thick on the dough. I am most certainly going back and getting pizza then I will update my review.

When I think of Laguna Niguel, I think of fancy schmancy things. It is very easy to think this way when the neighboring cities are Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo and Dana Point. I don't picture the local neighborhood's hole in the wall pizza joint like Ball Park Pizza. When you walk into Ball Park Pizza, you may get flash backs of your youth when many pizza joints had that hole in the wall feel. The old decor with hideous colors like green and red, bench seating, video games in one corner and a handful of tvs along the walls. This is how I like my pizza joints to look and feel.

They have pretty good lunch specials here:

    #1 - 1 Slice of Pizza $2.00
#2  - 2 Slices of Pizza and soft drink $4.50
#3  - 1 Slice of Pizza, 1 trip to salad bar and soft drink $6.00
#4  -  Spaghetti, garlic bread and soft drink $6.50
#5  -  Any sandwich and soft drink $6.50
#6  -  All you can eat salad bar and soft drink $7.50

They also have a very good selections of beers on tap. Around 18. And right above their beers on tap, there is a little basketball hoop. Buy a pitcher of beer and take a free throw. If you make it, you'll receive a $2.50 food purchase coupon. They have Happy Hour M-F 2-5pm. During HH, appetizers are 1/2 off, regular beer pitchers are $8 and premium are $11.

I highly recommend getting yourself a pizza sandwich here. This comes with sauce, cheese and your choice of 3 toppings. A side of chili pepper, a pickle spear and a bag of chips comes with the sandwich also. The bread is very nice and toasty. The toppings are piled on. And the sauce is rich. This pizza sandwich is cut in 4 slices to make it easier to eat. Break off a piece and it easily folds in half and ready to make your taste buds dance. My last visit, I had a pizza sandwich with pepperoni, sausage and jalapenos. The jalapenos here have kick too. Not all jalapenos are made equal and my tummy knows that first hand.

Well smack me and give me a salt lick, I love this place.

And to squash all that bull about how former New Yorkers always compare every pizza they eat to NYC pizza forever after, dammit there is no comparison here.

Btw, I hate that accusation, because gosh darnit if y'all aren't comparing whatever BBQ you ate last week to the kind you had growing up in Lousiana, or whatever sushi you had to the time you had it in Japan, or gelato you had in Italy, blah, blah blah.

For those who don't understand how food reviews typically work, the comparison is just a way to talk about the food in a way that others might understand - maybe you strike up a common bond because that person reading your review ALSO prefers the way one type of chicken noodle soup tastes over another chicken noodle soup. Plus, having something taste similar to the way you remember it tasting BEST is comforting. It's a reminder of a different time and place - a time when your food tasted good, OK!

So sue me, this ball park pizza is nothing like NYC pizza and I love it, love it, love IT because it's so gosh darn salty and the sauce is just perfect. Next time I go there, I may even ask them to cut the pizza into rectangles instead of triangles because that's how it is made by many family owned pizza parlors in Ohio where I am from.

So, there. I'll have it cut into rectangles, I'll have to drink gallons of water for days and days afterward, I'll refuse to compare it to NYC pizza even though I lived there too, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about any of it. Start posting on chat now about how you HATE people who put NYC pizza on a pedestal. I. don't. care.

And they have old school video games. Joy.

Ball park pizza is da bomb. Great sauce and never skimpy on the toppings.
Try the hot wings. They aren't the best I have ever had but not bad for the price. Don't forget about Ice cream. I think its like $1.00 for a small bowl. Its actually really good. I love taking the kids there and letting them go wild with the video games while I drink a beer and watch soccer on one of the flat screens. If you order a pitcher make sure you ask to shoot a hoop for $2.00 off your next pitcher.

Oh goodness. I've been going to this place since I was 4. That's 20 years now. Its a small, family owned pizza place that sponsors a lot of local teams. The walls are filled with pictures of local little league, softball, volleyball, basketball and any sport that involves a ball pictures.

The pizza is also delicious! I love a good amount of good cheese and they deliver. The crust is always crispy and perfectly baked. My personal favorite thing to get is a half Matador, half peperoni pizza and a pitcher of beer to have with friends. Its the perfect way to hang out and chat with friends. They also have at least a dozen large tv's playing whatever sport is relevant at any given moment in time.

It does tend to get full of screaming little kids all the time so that can get very annoying, very fast. I guess its a great family place.

Went here ALL the time for after-sports-game dinners as a kid.

Didn't always like the pizza as a kid, but as an adult, I realize why the parents came - it's delicious! Good beer selection and pretty fun environment.

It used to have better decoration with a cornucopia of sports relics. They used to have a wall that had rare memorabilia that locals would bring in (my dad brought in a Hudephol "Hu Dey" beer that came out when the Bengals were in the Super Bowl in 1989). Now the decoration is sparse, but I'm sure it's still fun when it gets crowded with kids or on a big sports night.

growing up in laguna niguel, i came here for many soccer team parties, basketball team parties, birthday parties, and the only place within walking distance to play neo geo video games.

i always had super fond memories of how awesome the pizza is here, so needless to say, when i came back a couple weeks ago, i was wary that my childhood expectations would not live up to my tastebuds today.

don't know what i mean? have you tried to rewatch an episode of voltron? that cartoon sucks! it's almost painful trying to watch an episode. or have you been to chuck e cheese after the age of 18? the pizza there is terrible! and the games are all gross there! you really shouldn't try and relive your childhood by redoing these things. it ultimately ruins super awesome memories.

but ballpark pizza does not do this to me at all.

the pepperoni/sausage pizza as well as their hot wings are still as awesome as i remember. every time i go back home, i now have an awesome pizza spot....well besides ny upper crust

Thus far, I have recruited two more friends to the BPP - Pizza Sandwich movement.  My usual three topping, linguica, sausage, and jalapeño, of course with extra sauce gets'em every time. 8)  The toasty texture, flavorful toppings, and great sauce work in perfect harmony.
Note: The jalapenos here are spicy, nose running, damp forehead spicy!  This pizza sandwich is just as good as the first one I had, three for three, same abundant amount of toppings, and consistent goodness.

I also tried a pizza here for the first time.  A large, half Hat Trick/ half Grand Slam Combo. (Hawaiian/Combination Supreme)  I always imagined eating a pizza with a crap load of toppings...  'Not just a lot but US of A excessiveness, the kind that gets me all teary-eyed.  The pizza dream pie where the toppings are freely applied with buffet-like recklessness. (See uploaded photo)
    http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Ridiculously be'...  be'...  beautiful...  Im sorry...
(Discretely wipes away tear from the corner of my right eye.)

The thin crust was good.  'However, a bit on the soggy side...  'But with my request again for extra sauce and the obscene amount of toppings, a very tolerable...  'And understandable side effect.

Obviously, people living here are not use to finding decent pizza.

Homogonized crap. Think in the tradition of the old Domino's.

This pizza is made for kids, period. Basically, a local chucky cheese.

$31.85 for a large pizza with 2 toppings, and one soda!  I called BALK!  They could have told me about the coupon but they didn't. Prices are out of the park.

Artisian and brick oven pizza is cheaper than this over-priced lack luster place divorced parents take their kids.

As for cleanliness, think pink eye or staff infection with all the kids touching everything in site, coughing everywhere, and using their hands to eat. Here's a tip ballpark, Wetnaps and sanitizer.

I had to get a beer after my nephew took an hour at the video games. Another fortune wasted. Flat, flat, flat beer.

Although the name is quite accurate because you really feel like your wallet is at an actual ballpark.

    -quality
    -price
    -cleanliness

    +good for kids
Overall, avoid unless you have absolutely nothing better to do with your kids and the small fortune you spend is worth getting a break from your kids while you drink.

It's ok. It is not better than Upper Crust as far as taste and value. In a nutshell, Ball Park Pizza is an unpretentious neighborhood old-school pizza joint. Nothing more. In Laguna Niguel you pick from a number of chain restaurants or leave town for dinner. Or, with BP Pizza you learn to love the one you're with. This is what I got for $40: Large Pepperoni Pizza, 4 drinks, and Antipasta Salad. (By the way, if you live in newport and you want a good old-school pizza joint, go to Sgt. Pepperoni's (Bristol/Jamboree). Big tasty pizzas and salads and beer. No frills. Way better than a chain store.)

Don't be fooled! There are several Ball Park Pizza spots throughout OC but this particular spot tops them all.  I order the Pepperoni pizza all the time here and the melted cheese is perfect, the pepperonis are crunchy golden brown and the crust is ideal.  Not way too greasy but definitely not diet food. A definite must... give this Laguna Niguel Ball Park spot a visit!

It's a Friday night, sitting at Ruth's Chris after a $150 meal we looked at each other and said, we kind wish we were at Ball Park Pizza.  WHAT THE HECK??

Yes, the pizza is phenom. Our absolute favorite.  They must put something in the crust to make the perfect amount of crisp to hold the cheese and toppings up but still give it a good bite.  I don't what the heck it is but it keeps us coming back for more.  The mixture of cheese makes the perfect melting combo...and the toppings are always fresh.

Since we come so often, we sometimes mix it up and throw in their famous meatball subs.  I suppose after making them the same way for over 10 years, its no wonder they have the freshest meat and cheese perfected in a sandwich.

But that's not all.  It's a local, "mom and pop" owned place, with the same staff that you can trust and count on to smile at your family, including a genuine one for your kids (that run amok in the arcade as well as begging them for ice-cream).  We love to come to a place where we can gather with our friends and our kids in a safe, family-friendly, environment.

Now we aren't saying that they serve filets on 500 degree plates, but in this new decade, we are really making efforts as a family to be aware of where we spend our $$ and our time.  And for the $$, Ball Park gives us way more for our family, than any fancy place could ever hope to.

Pick a family day and make it a weekly event.  The staff will make sure to recognize you as a regular.  They'll remember your order and your kids and you'll keep coming back just to enjoy the "small town" feel.

    "Hey Norm!!!"

This is my favorite pizza place of all time.  I have been coming here since I was a wee lad (when it used to be called Barro's).  When I was a kid I only got the cheese pizza, though, and I didn't know what I was missing.  The toppings are what set their pizza head and shoulders above the rest.  Fresh and plentiful ingredients.  Love jalapenos on any pizza.  Staff is awesome and have been there forever.  New (maybe not so new anymore) owner is a good guy and is often on site, thankfully keeping the standard of quality as high as ever.  Great place to bring the kids and grab a beer while they entertain themselves.  Can get pretty busy on game days with the soccer and little league teams in there, so try on Fridays or during the week for less crowds.  Try the Sunday morning breakfast pizza during NFL season (nice high-def TV's).  I know breakfast pizza sounds weird, but believe me it is so tasty.  Hope it never changes.
