This is one of the most beautiful restaurants I have ever been to.  The walls fold out exposing a view of the ocean, beautiful grounds and towering, misty green mountains.

The food was well prepared and beautifully presented.  We stayed at the hotel so we went there every day.  Needless to say, at these prices you want them to be bang on each time.

Being in the biz, we were impressed with the staff.  They were courteous, professional, and prepared.  They work extra hard too.  Talking to the chef about his kitchen with a high temp of 140 made me feel like a p#%sy for complaing about 120 degrees.

If you have the means, I highly recommend this place.

As of 8/09, Happy Talk lounge is open again...and the bartender told us that "corporate" wanted to get the restaurant back open again within a couple of months, probably just for breakfast first.

It feels like the same Happy Talk..ie regulah bar food (with dinner specials too), good cocktails, and live music as of this week.  Local-type ambience, and amazing views, Keoki's on tap, we're happy the lounge is open again (used to be owned by someone other than the resort owner, was bought by resort owner).

    Status Report -

4 Stars because it's still not open, but it, along with the adjacent Happy Talk Lounge, has been purchased by the folks who own Calypso in Hanalei. On July 1, 2011, while in the renovation process, a fire broke out in the roof and now we're starting over. The good news is it's all covered by insurance, and the Kitchen will have to be brought up to code, which should result in major improvements. Probably another year before we can look for a reopening. Hawaiian Time, you know.

Please note: the Yelp map (by Google) does not show the exact location of this restaurant- in fact it is in the heart of Princeville, not on Kuhio Hwy.

This is a decent restaurant with an amazing view of the Hanalei Bay and the mountains of Na Pali. For starters, we ordered some appetizers (pupu's) and salads- the Fresh Ahi Poki Towers was pretty good, but the rest were kind of forgettable - to tell you honestly I don't recommend any of those. Save the $10 to $15 per appetizer and go straight to ordering the fresh fish cooked in 4 distinct fashions (Hawaiian recipes). Those were really good! Around $27 to $30 per plate. Accompanied by a side of well-prepared mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. YUMMY!

Some other impressions: service was pretty good, courteous- no complaints whatsoever. By the way... They charged us a whopping $30 for an Asti Spumante sweet dessert sparkling wine from Italy that usually costs around $6-7 at the supermarket. Which is OK, restaurants always overprice wines for profit. But what was not OK is that they called the Asti wine a "champagne"- a bit atrocious from the Euro snob's perspective. I forgive them everything: the view from the restaurant was amazing. Definitely worth it.

A piece of advice though: you should definitely bring your sunglasses and some sunscreen - otherwise the afternoon sun will blind and burn you.

Reservations should be made well in advance. Don't make no mistakes, this is Kauai, the island is small, there are very few places with a personality like this one, and they fill up real fast...

We had a very special celebration here tonight. A once in a lifetime type of celebration that will remain a dear memory. So that is why I give this restaurants 5 full stars. It is one of the best places to be on Kauai. If it wasn't such a special occasion to me, I would have probably still given the Bali Hai a solid 4 stars, like the other Yelpers that have reviewed it so far.

Nice place with a great view, but it seems as though if you're not staying there, their attitude changes and they shuffle you off to an area with a not quite as spectacular view of the golf carts.

Drinks were very good, most notably the coco-banana. Really tasty.

Totally recommend the poki as well. Totally delicious fish!

Lie and tell them you're a guest of the resort and you'll probably get better service.

We had my daughters wedding here in April.  The restaurant was closed to the general public at the time as they were doing some renos so we got to have the reception on the front Lani which is the premium location in the restaurant.  Otherwise we would have been pushed off to the side Lani which does not have the spectacular views.
I learned a lot about planning weddings from this experience, but I only have one daughter so I won't have to do it again.
The food was excellent.  I only tried the fish but others who had the steak olwalla loved it.  2 out of the 39 of us had the chicken fettuccine with macadamia nut pesto.
Most everyone thought it was way too much food which I would rather have as a complaint then that  people went away hungry.
All in all it was a wonderful experience for all and I believe one of the most beautiful places on the planet one could be married.

Good dinner -- the seafood was well-executed.  The open air atmosphere is pleasant, and most importantly, we didn't feel ripped off.  You can also view the sunset here if you book early enough in advance, though the view is probably better over at the Princeville.

This review is based on numerous brunches we've had before it was closed for renovations.  Be sure to call ahead to see if it has re-opened.  One of the best casual places to have breakfast with a view on the north shore.  Less expensive than having breakfast at the Princeville Resort (although the views are also breathtaking).

The HAPPY TALK LOUNGE is now reopened and we ate there twice during our week in Kauai. The Bali Hai restaurant is still closed though. The food in the lounge was good, I had the nachos with the pineapple salsa and kalua pork on them the first trip (very tasty) and the pork sandwich the second time (also good). I don't usually like kalua pork too dry and salty without enough flavor usually, but theirs was very good!  Boyfriend had fish sandwich first time and fish tacos second time, he like the tacos better than the sandwich but both were good. He was spoiled by the fish sandwich at Dolphin the day before so every sandwich after was good but not as good as the Dolphin's, he says it is the bread that makes the difference! Overall it is a nice place to eat dinner at sunset in princeville, best view we could find at a restaurant at night! Best view during the day is at Mediterranean Gourmet !

The views and the atmosphere were fantastic, the food was decent and the price sky high.  This was one of the most expensive places we went to in Kuaui, but for the view, it was worth it.  The blackened ahi was the best dish our table got and is highly recommended.
