Love the Caesar with pulled pork - its the best. Service can be so-so, but overall always a good dining experience. Always leave full!!

Good food for a great price.
The dutch ribs were cooked just right, with the meat ready to slide off the bone. The barbecue sauce was tasty. Solid cole slaw; good baked beans; sweet jalapeno corn bread... and local beer from some of the great breweries in town.
If I were in Bend and looking for barbecue, I'd definitely come to Baldy's. It's a friendly, home-style place. But having just been to Alabama a few weeks back, I've got high barbecue standards in mind. So it's 3 stars. -

From reading the other reviews, it might be the best BBQ in town, but that doesn't bode well for BBQ in Bend.
We went on a Tuesday and got a couple of the Danish Back Rib specials, a chicken sandwich, and a Buffalo Wing salad (with grilled instead of fried chicken).
The service was fast and our waitress was pleasant. The food came out as ordered. The place is very popular, even on a weeknight. It did look like it was mostly skiers coming back into town.
The sandwich was fine, nothing special - very average.
The salad was watery and there was not much of it. There were like 5 thin slices of grilled chicken. I doubt that there was more than 2 oz of chicken meat on the salad. Most places will give you the equivalent of one breast fillet at least.
The ribs were a decent value at the promo price (included beans, slaw). They were lightly smoked, not overdone, but not particularly meaty. The racks were much smaller/lighter than typical racks in other BBQ restaurants. Maybe they buy them that way to cut costs for the special. If I had paid the non-promo regular price for baby backribs, I would have felt cheated. Flavor was good, no complaints there. The sides were unremarkable.
Positives: good service, nice atmosphere (very chalet-like)
Negatives: very forgettable food, portions on the small side -

Bend, OR
I am still a HUGE BBQ fan, so this has been on my must-visit list for a while.
Went here for the first time to celebrate son's birthday. Actually...we were expecting to go to their "Eastside" location, but that's in a friggin' gas station... Not like Rudy's (Texas) where it's a converted gas station, but an actual gas station. No...not eating here...moved on...headed all the way back across town to Century Dr.
Came on the $10 full-rack night. Nice...many people were ordering it. The plate is just ribs, beans and slaw...would have liked a better substitution, but hey...it's the special...I get it.
Smothered Fries. Excellent. In fact...had I known, I would have split this as a meal with one of my kids.
Onion Rings. Excellent.
Ribs. (Danish Ribs?!?) OK...let's give them a shot. While they were too smoky for me, they were still very good. I get the sense that mine had been sitting for a while, but I also understand that there are a lot of racks heading out on a night like this and they were fine.
Oh...$10 for the full rack of ribs! That was an awesome price and my review above is based on quality/flavor only, not value...value was OUTSTANDING!
Pulled Pork Plate. Excellent...HUGE portion...HUGE. The Garlic Mashed was excellent, though a bit spicy for the wife. It had little crispy chunks of potato in it and was...well...excellent.
Kids' Ribs. These were great, but the kids pulled off the really burnt parts and they would have been wasted had I not snagged them. Same comment as on my ribs where they were too smoky, but overall were good ribs.
Fries. Excellent. These are the large style of restaurant fries with the shredded potato crust that makes them extra crunchy on the outside while perfect on the inside. They were done very well for both the sides and the Smothered Fries.
Burger. Good "restaurant burger".
BBQ Sundae. A pile of mashed potatoes, beans and pulled pork. So now here's where it starts heading down. And after a while, we figured out what the problem was. It's the beans! They're awful. And since they flavored the whole dish, the dish was then awful.
Jalapeno Cornbread. Good. Not great, but good. It needs to go with something, like beans, but...
BBQ Beans. A couple of us had beans as the side, and they were in the BBQ Sundae above. They were awful. It's the sauce. Too sweet. Too much ketchup. Too much. The other ingredients were done well, the beans themselves were good as were the chunks of bacon, but the sauce destroyed it for me. I watched the finished dishes of a few other patrons go back and every single one had a not-empty bowl of beans on them. Either something was really wrong that night, or they're not understanding these beans need to be changed.
--
Service was ok. We were greated and seated promptly, and there was a big party next to us. It took about 15 minutes from appetizer order to food order, which was way too long, but overall it was understandable based on the orders ahead of us getting prepped. I did like that they were at the front door waiting for us and had our table ready before we entered.
We'll be back...but I am disappointed that this didn't turn into one of my WE'LL BE BACK places. -

So based on the reviews, I took my family here for dinner. This is some of the best B-B-Q I have had in a long time. The pork ribs are really special, and the sauce is great. The combo dinner gave you so much, you can actually share with someone. The greatness ends there for me though. First, I would have liked a choice of sides. The waitress (who wasn't all that friendly), didn't ask us what we wanted for sides, so I can only assume that you get cole slaw and baked beans with everything. I can't eat the beans, so that's a waste of food for me. My sister is allergic to carrots, so the cole slaw was a waste for her. I would have liked to have a salad, and I can do without the cornbread. Jalapeno and cheese cornbread should not be sweet; but that's the thing, it couldn't decide if it was savory or sweet and lacked any kind of taste.
The food options are really nice, as some of the other reviewers mention, but I was disappointed in the service, and the brush off I got when I approached any of the other wait staff. Unfortunately our waitress wasn't the smartest of the bunch either and when it came time for our bill, that was a comedy bit on it's own. -

Hubbard, OR
One of my favorite meals we had in Bend! This is a fun, inviting little restaurant with a nice patio area (we were a little warm in the sun so headed inside) with down-home western decor. The menu was extensive, with many options for lunch specials. Sandwiches, meats, salads, even a barbecue sundae that was tempting. Prices were reasonable, especially considering the generous portions that were provided. Our plates were full, much like we were as we rolled out of the place clutching our sides, questioning the wisdom in leaving nothing for a to-go box.
Both of us ordered ribs. They were tender and meaty without much fat to wrestle with. Loved the barbecue sauce. Sweet and tangy with a bit of spice. Beans were good; I wasn't crazy about the chipotle potato salad (the potatoes were a little al dente for my taste) but my husband's fries gave me major side jealousy. Crispy perfection.
The service was kind of slow, but the food was good enough to win me over. Plus our sodas weren't too neglected for refills, so I can't complain too much.
I'll be back next time we're in town, hopefully to try those smothered fries the other Yelpers are raving about. -
Review from Derrell P.
San Francisco, CA
Unable to decide, we asked our waitress what we should order and she recommend the special. I think she said they were Dutch Ribs, whatever that is, and 'addicting'. I remember she said that.
The sauce on the table was a little sweet for my taste (and with a little too much onion) and I was happy when a spicier version showed up with the ribs. The ribs were fantastic. Dry rubbed over hickory. Perfectly cooked and the sauce was just the right flavor combo. Lots of local beer choices too, the Sinister Stout and Session IPA from 10Barrel were both on tap.
It's always a treat to find a place that knows how to smoke ribs. -

Damn fine place for wings or other BBQ related items. Like I just said, the wings here puts kick to the ass. They were spicy but not too hot and or course were served with ranch or blue cheese.
I was with family and we were seated outside when it was reasonably cold, and the heater was broken. But hey, our waiter was nice and the meal itself was good so it really didn't matter that is was cold. Plus, in the back they had some guy playing the acoustic guitar, for I feel kind of bad because nobody was listening to him and their was a little girl covering her ears, I feel kind of bad for him.
They also have pork products and corn bread and other things, like I said, it is a barbecue place.
-1 star for Pepsi products (except Mtn. Dew, Mountain Dew is good :)

I've lived (small) parts of my life in Dallas, Charlotte, Atlanta, and Kansas City. So whenever someone mentions a "good" BBQ joint in the PNW, I am VERY skeptical.
I went with the suggestions of my employees and ordered "The Special" (this is not printed on the menu), which is a full rack of baby-back ribs with a side of beans and slaw. At $10.00, its hard to pass this up.
Baldy's in Bend, OR is a solid place for good eating. I would characterize their BBQ as Memphis style: meats are grilled with sweeter sauces.
While I am not a fan of "fall-off-the-bone" ribs, they were good. The value and the food lock this place in at 4 stars. The sides were pretty standard, and I hear that the deserts are sub-par. -

Great meal for a great price--I eat here every time I'm in Bend. I about three hours south, so I get there quite often.
The waitstaff is polite and friendly, but the restaurant itself is a bit crowded. This may be a turn-off for some, but I like the "homey" feel that this creates.
All in all, it's a great place to eat. -

I was a manager in the restaurant industry in Chicago for many years so I am extra-inclined to critique the food and service at restaurants. No matter the occasion, I have never hesitated to inform management or the owners of any issue that needs to be addressed.
Concerning Baldy's, I can honestly say, I have been thoroughly impressed every time I have eaten there. I am actually shocked at how reasonable most menu prices are. They must be doing well as I heard they are opening their third location in Redmond pretty soon. I actually live in Portland but my business brings me to Bend many times per year and I eat at Baldy's multiple times during each visit. The smoked flavor of their super tender meats is amazing! I love their spicy sauce! The salads are fresh and the homemade side dishes like chipotle potato salad and chili are incredible. Even the cole slaw is great! Most restaurants tend to neglect "common" side dishes, but Baldy's does not. The few times I have room for dessert, I always get the homemade bread pudding... a perfect end to a wonderful meal!
Over the years of eating at Baldy's, I have grown to appreciate the ongoing improvements of their menu and even their facilities as they seem purposed to make the customer's dining experience as perfect as possible. A++ for Baldy's BBQ!!! -
Review from Cathy S.
Baldy's has some damn good BBQ! We stopped in based on the good Yelp reviews after hiking the Newberry National Volcano area. We sat outside on the patio right in the sun.
Our server very attentive and our meals were just delicious! They also carried a lot of the local beers we had been sampling during our stay in Bend. If you're in the area, be sure to stop in here! -

This is my first negative experience review. I almost don't want to post it, but silence won't help much. If it were my restaurant, I would want to know.
I ordered the pork sandwich and it looked great. When I took a bite it was little dry. It needed a little more sauce. I went to the counter and asked for a litle more sauce for my sandwich. She handed me a little cup of sauce and then asked for $0.50. I thought she was joking, so I laughed "with her". She said. "No, really it's $0.50". This was their answer to make wet, the dry sandwich they built. I have never heard of that. I felt ripped off, almost baited and upsold. I thought $6.00 was a real fair price for lunch. I was wrong, it's $6.50.
I jusd didn't like the combination of a dry sandwich and the $0.50 upcharge. The combination makes it tough to go there again. I think I'm done. -

Hands down, best BBQ ever in my book, and I grew up in the southwest where bbq was aplenty. Come here for the ribs or pulled pork if you want an amazing meal. I highly recommend the baby back ribs, the smothered fries (yummy, crispy golden fries piled with pulled pork, shredded cheddar cheese and their delicious homemade bbq sauce), the chipotle potatoes, au gratin potatoes, cole slaw, the jalapeno cornbread and the bread pudding. For an extra kick, the Cat's Meow spicy BBQ sauce cant be beat.
They have several local beers on tap, but for wine I like the malbec with my rib dinner - just the right amount of jammy-ness and spice that complements the meat and sauces perfectly!
If you want amazing service, ask to be seated in Heather's station. :)
On busy nights this place can get packed, but it is well worth the wait. The Baldy's takeout spot at the Shell station Hwy 20 is a good option for when you want just the food, at home, without the wait. Baldy's is our family's favorite spot for birthdays and nights out when we just want to eat some delish food. -

This was an unexpected find in Bend. We had beef brisket, which was quite good, and barbecued chicken, which was amazingly good. The chicken was done perfectly all the way through, moist and tender, and the sauce was just right.
The meal combos include cole slaw (the sweet kind that I like), beans and cornbread. There was plenty of food and it was all delicious.
The room is good-sized and very noisy, with the customers obviously enjoying the experience. The servers are young and friendly.
The Baldy logo is a cartoon of a bald guy with square glasses. I noticed during our meal that behind the (extremely short) bar, there was a bald guy with square glasses -- obviously proud to be ruling over his namesake. -

Baldy's has gone downhill. I don't know what's up, but over the last few visits we've found the food to be dry and overcooked. Service was non-existent.
I've started cooking a pork butt at home and making our own version of smothered fries. It's cheaper and tastes a LOT better.Listed in: Life in Bend is good...

Really good BBQ for the PacNW. Need to work on their sides a little, maybe some collared greens or southern-style green beans? Also need a bigger dining room :) Good beer selection too.

Pretty delicious barbecue. Service was a little slow and sassy at their main location. They should hire more staff for lunch time...cause the place was packed. Other than that, its the best show in town for BBQ.

I was really hungry BUT, the service was very slow, which I hear is the norm. The food was good- thus 2 stars. Overall, it was "OK", not in a hurry to go back.
We went for lunch and both had sandwiches- price was ok.

Half rack of ribs, fries, and cole slaw for $10.50
Meat fell off the bones.
Fries were crispy and delicious.
Baked beans had bacon in them!
Mashies looked sublime.
Service wasn't spectacular but for that price and flavor, who cares???? -

Bend, OR
Five stars because it is currently the ONLY place to get BBQ in Bend. I hear Country Catering has BBQ but to me, it's not their specialty like Baldy's. And i hear there is a good place in Sisters...but that's not Bend. I am eager to try it though.
We've seen some BBQ joints come and go over the years...with Baldy's even forcing out the old standby: "Kasey's" which had decent ribs, but made you wonder if they ever had the health department pay a visit because that place NEEDED to go. Yikes! That place was scary.
But back to Baldy's. I love BBQ. And will generally pick a rib joint as a must try restaurant for any new town we visit. As one reviewer said, "It's not the best BBQ" and while true, please refer to my opening statement: "It's the only BBQ in Bend" and it is very good.
To be fair, we've not frequented Baldy's for some time (gonna have to remedy that....maybe today) so this review is going to be a bit dated. However in reading other YELPERS comments I cannot disagree with much that has been said.
I will add my two cents on some though:
For the person who ordered steak. Nope. Wouldn't do it here and I agree....probably shouldn't even be offered on the menu. Stick to what a place like this is known for: BBQ. I'm not surprised at your disappointment. But I did read it was a pan seared rib-eye. In theory it should be good. Still, when I want a good steak, I go to a steakhouse.
The buttermilk onion rings....we love 'em. Especially with the honey mustard dressing.
Pulled pork sammis...sorry, sandwiches...also very yummy. The beef brisket sandwich too.
Need to try those smothered fries. Those sound like they are to die for and I've never had 'em.
But here is the lowdown, go with the baby back ribs. Everything else is just window dressing. If a place like this fails on the most basic of BBQ----baby back ribs----then it fails 100% and Baldy's serves up some mighty fine baby back ribs.
When my son graduated from high school, we hired Baldy's to do the catering and they did an outstanding job at a very reasonable price. "Baldy" himself (aka: Brian) did the set up and tear down with no hassle and no worries. It was fabulous with lots of compliments on the food. Highly recommend their catering services.
"Baldy" (aka: Brian) is also a big supporter of community events and causes being a regular donor to our local NJROTC unit. Thank you, Brian!
Service? Yeah....I would agree with other reviewers. Can be hit and miss. I think when Brian is there, it's a hit. When he's not...well...as the saying goes: "When the boss is away, the kids will play".
As with any small business like this where the owner is such a vital part to it's success, when "Baldy" is there....you are going to have a fine meal with outstanding service. When he's not, chances are it will be lacking. I hate that for him because even he needs a day off, right?
Parking can be complicated due to the shared lot with the used furniture store. If it's after their regular business hours you should be fine. But park in one of their spots while they are open and you could be towed.
The place can also be a bit loud, especially if it's hopping and it's crowded. So don't PLAN on a nice quiet meal here. During the warmer months, the patio seating on the deck is nice.
UPDATE---
Went here last night because it's been awhile and I had to try those smothered fries after reading other reviews. The place was hopping and "Baldy" was there. Great sight to see in this economy. Looked like everybody was having a good time and people were enjoying their food. I know we sure did.
Didn't get the fries after all. I wanted to, but "wifey" said: "No, a full rack of baby back ribs is enough for you!" She was right. I walked away stuffed. Service was very attentive and we had no complaints. Great meal, good times and...I took a couple pics. -

This is some butt kickin BBQ! Being very particular about my BBQ and sauces I was a bit skeptical about trying Baldy's. The atmosphere here is very warm and the service staff is kind and thorough. While waiting I enjoyed some very stiff and delicious cocktails. The cuisine arrived promptly and I was very pleased by the moist, tender, and flavorful meats. The house made sauces here are stellar! I absolutely loved the hot BBQ with jalapeno flavor. The food is excellent and the prices are very inexpensive. I will be back soon!

Amazing, falling-off-the-bone ribs! The best side dish is the chipotle potato salad, unlike any I've ever had. The cornbread and cole slaw are so-so. We were happy to see a vegetarian option (black bean burger) for our diverse group.
We walked in and placed a large takeout order (for 15 people), and while we were waiting they offered us a table and brought us water. Nice hospitality! -

Without a doubt, the best Barbecue in Bend. The atmosphere is fun and goes with the food is fantastic. The service is always friendly, polite and very efficient. The prices are very low considering the quality of the food, which is excellent.

Review from JP T.
The only reason my family and I came here was because of their $10 rib special that was advertised in those local "where to eat" magazines. A couple of yelp reviews later, it was settled, Baldy's BBQ for dinner on Tuesday night. Coming from CA, Oregon's food scene is extremely mediocre. Everything was either American, wannabe Asian, or pub food. haha So when it came down to choosing a restaurant to eat at, I was pretty skeptical of anywhere we chose.
Baldy's is LEGIT bbq. I've had good bbq all over California, Nevada, Texas and random spots on the east coast. Baldy's is defnitely legit. And for all the people who insist on ordering sandwiches at a bbq place and determining their reviews based off that, I suggest you try a regular bbq meat item instead to determine if its good bbq or not.
My family and I sampled the ribs (danish baby backs are the $10 special, which is pretty much smaller, less meaty baby back ribs), chicken, and brisket. Every item had a decent crust and nice smoke ring, so I know they didn't cheat and bake/boil their items and finish them on the grill. Of the 3 meats, the brisket was definitely the weakest. It was a bit drier than some of the better briskets I've tried. As far as sides, the cole slaw was the best I've had at a bbq spot because it was simple and traditional. No random peanuts or raisins or othe bs thrown in there like some bbq spots like to do. The beans had big shreds of meat in it which was a nice touch. And the fries and onion rings were actually very crispy, even as they cooled.
Why not a 5th star? Because of the wait. We knew this place was going to be busy because of the special, but let me explain what happened to my family. We were patiently waiting and while the hostess told us about 30 min, as they were calling names, parties were nowhere to be found. And these weren't your typical 4 or 5, this was a party of 18! And behind them a party of 12-15! So when this party of 18 could not be found, after the staff put the tables together, they broke it up and started seating the normal size parties, then started to pice together something for the 12-15 party that actually waited. As they are doing this, the party of 18 decides to come back. At most restaurants, they would tell them they would have to wait. But instead, Baldy's gives the party of 18 the tables for the group of 12-15, which made the rest of us waiting, wait even longer. Our wait ended up being about 35 min, but it could have easily been about half of that if the baldy's staff was tough enough to tell this ginormous group that they would have to wait a bit because they were not around when their table was called. I'm sure the other parties around us were also a little bit disturbed by the fact that they were "cut" by this giant group. In my eyes, its like getting in line for a roller coaster, leaving, then coming back.
But aside from the waiting mishap, the food was really good and the price was extremely good for bbq. They also have a pretty good selection of whiskies and I supposedly got one of the top shelf ones for only $7.50! They serve the drinks in mini jars and mine was pretty much the equivalent of 2-3 shots. Pretty good deal. If I came to Bend again, I would definitely come back to this place, as the situation we had was a little bit unique. -

Dinner stop #2...walking distance from my hotel, because I was first lazy, and second thirsty. I'd planned to get a couple beers, but never got that far. Baldy's had a really good draft root beer that I decided to try, and ended up sticking with.
Food - I couldn't decide between ribs & the brisket, so I got the combo with both. Plus the standard 3 sides and cornbread. It was a pile of food, which I finished because I'm fat, and that's what I do.
The meats were very well prepared. The baby backs just about fell off the bone, and were tender & juicy. Same for the brisket. Problem was I just didn't think they had that much flavor. Everything was covered with a BBQ sauce that was fairly standard, didn't really have anything of its own. It wasn't bad, just wasn't really particularly good either. I also tried the bread pudding, and while it was tasty I thought it was also a little short on spice and was just a little bit mushy.
I'd give this place 3 stars based only on the food, but the waiter gives them an extra one. It was him that recommended the root beer and the ribs/brisket combo, and he was properly attentive to me and the other 5-6 tables he was working. It's starting to appear that decent service is pretty common in Bend.
Oh, a piece of advice: when you're already close to full, mixing bread pudding with root beer isn't the best idea. It makes the walk back to the hotel uncomfortable, and might leave you laying motionless for an hour or so....just like me. -

I never leave Baldy's hungry. It's not possible. The food is so friggin good I can't stop. I remember the time we got two of the massive sampler platters. Then someone was silly enough to order their amazing bread pudding. You know how I know... because I ate most of it myself even though I couldn't fit anything else in there. Definitely an A list restaurant.
I was particularly fond of the quality of service there too. We wanted to watch the Blackhawks win the Stanley cup (which they did that night), and they were kind of enough to change the one tv there to accomodate us and hold a large enough table for our group despite the no-reservation policy. If you go on a Tues or Weds night, you're likely to see me there! -

uhh yeah.. so i went back to baldys a couple months ago. this time i made the mistake and ordered the steak. BIG mistake. since i enjoy my steak medium rare, i ordered it rare, figuring that like a lot of places they will tend to slightly overcook it. right.
so, my steak arrived about ten minutes after the rest of my party had been served their entrees. you would think that is because they forgot to throw it on the grill, but no, you would be wrong! it would be because they felt the need to cook it beyond well done! greyish meat no seasoning and no pink whatsoever. i had to saw at it just to get a bite off. gross!
so, when i asked the waiter to replace it, he told me that would be fine.. but yeah, you probable shouldn't order a steak here. WHY IS IT ON THE MENU THEN? if it is a well known fact that the steak is not good, don't offer it. period.
needless to say, i received the second steak, it was cooked to medium doneness. whatever. i was over it at this point, and my three dining companions were already done with their meal. i had a couple bites, it was bland and chewy.
advice is the same.... get the bread pudding!1 Previous Review: Show all »

We like Baldy's a lot. There are so many tasty things on the menu I hardly know where to begin. Start with the starters! Both the chili cheese fries and the smothered fries are a good bet. The buttermilk onion rings are OK, and we've never ordered the wings--what with Hardy's in town and all. I always order the pulled pork sandwich and then get some cole slaw to top it with. It's not as messy as ribs and just as tasty.

The only thing we've been disappointed with here are a couple of the potato selections. I'm not crazy about the baked or au gratin. Otherwise I love the ribs, prime ribe, coleslaw, etc. The beer selection is small.

Baldy's is good bar-b-que. The portions are good and the taste is also good. The sauce however is really good, you can get normal and spicy and both are delicious. You can find better bar-b-que than Baldy's, but in Central Oregon it is hands down the best.

Pretty darn good barbecue, but there are some serious service issues here. And seems to be a lot of turn over, never a good sign. Maybe it would be okay to just order to go?
