I just visited Balanced Health for the first time this morning.  My massage therapist was Karen and she did an amazing job.  I told her I was in dental school and she said "Say no more!" LOL She pretty much knew what to do.  The pressure was just right.  After the massage she even let me know which areas were extra tense on my body and suggested some stretching exercises.  This is my 4th massage ever and I think I'm going to stick with Balanced Health.  The office is easy to get to, there were no outside noises heard in the room, and everyone was really professional.  I highly recommend this place.

Came here just before Thanksgiving to get some of the kinks out of my back due to some holiday stress. The massage itself was good; the nice heated table felt great since it was cold out. My massage therapist asked me what hurt, where, and how severe the pain was, and then targeted those areas. She was nice and pleasant and just let me fall asleep.

The reason I am giving this place only 3 stars is due mostly to how inconvenient it is to make an appointment. When I wanted a massage was September... and went in November. That's ridiculous. When I call for a massage it is because I am in pain and would like one relatively soon. And no the massages are not so good that it's worth the wait. Unfortunately I left here still with knots and still slightly uncomfortable :( They aren't cheap either. I'll stick to my usual Backworks for my massages. I leave feeling great and it's cheaper than BH.

Hannah was awesome! My partner had Jessica, whom apparently is amazing too.

It's right at Downtown Crossing, the space is clean, quiet, and welcoming. The receptionists were all very nice and their prices are reasonable.

My Masseuse informed me that they don't expect gratuity and that she would much rather people get regular massages than worry about having to tip. I looked at her for a second then I realized it may have been a genuine statement. That's a very nice thing. We tipped them, of course.

I came here with my boyfriend a few weeks ago. We both thought our massages were very good but not amazing. I should have given my therapist more feedback, though--my previous professional massage experiences are (1) Swedish massage in the Bellagio, Las Vegas, nearly 10 years ago, (2) 20-min back massage paid for by my employer at work, and (3) many dozen massages in SE Asia for $2 a pop for an hour. The latter are vigorous, almost like passive yoga. What this means is that I'm poorly calibrated to Western massages and can't properly compare this one. This was the lightest/gentlest massage I've ever received.

My massage therapist was extremely professional and warm. I felt well taken care of. (Though if I were to return, I might ask for different music--she played classical versions of Beatles, Bach and other composers, very distracting!) And she said something about drinking a lot of water that didn't seem medically accurate, but the vibe was nice. I'm someone who gets cold easily, and the heated table made my heart sing.

My major gripe is something others have pointed out. When I decided to buy the coupon, I was basing the decision on the website's claim that gratuities were not expected. I saw the "gratuities appreciated" sign when I arrived in the massage room. At the reception desk after my massage, I learned the standard hourly rates for the massage ($100/h, much higher than I remembered)--this meant that the total cost of my boyfriend's and my massage was 50% greater than what I'd planned. That killed the floaty feeling really fast. On top of that, the receptionist started talking about this package deal that ended the next day. This seems like a rather daft business move... work by Daniel Kahneman, for example, has shown that the last few moments of an experience have a disproportionate impact on people's overall feelings about the experience. I'm going to remember the "Oh damn, I'm already exceeding my budget and the holidays are just starting" feeling for a while. It was such a stressful down note that I'm not inspired to return.

Quick update: It looks like they've revamped their website and no longer claim to reject gratuities. Understandable, but still too bad! It seemed like an awesome business model... if they had followed through with it.

One of the best massages I've gotten in the USA.

As a Chinese person from the mainland, massages are a weekly activity back home so I have real high standards for massages. The kind of massage I like gets down and dirty. I want heavy kneading to get the knots out of my shoulders, back and hamstrings. NO tickle, sweeping, cop-out moves that so many "masseuses" get away with.

The massage therapists at Balanced Health are TRUE therapists. They can feel the knots in your muscles and they know how to get them out. It aint just rubbing and pushing your tendons, muscles and ligaments around. They use some unique techniques and pressure customized to your liking and really get down and deep.

At the end of your session, your therapist will spend about 5 minutes to tell you the state of health of your muscles and how to help yourself get rid of "problem" areas, such as places where you're more tense.

You won't want your massage to end.

But yes, this place is WAY pricey. I wouldn't have come if not for the bf's coupon buying skills.

I came here on a Groupon deal.  My experience was ok.  On the phone, the front desk staff was a little curt as they navigated me through the "Groupon massage" appointment process.  I did not get to pick my massage therapist and the date was about a month out.  When I arrived, however, they were very pleasant.

There is more of a spa-like atmosphere here than at Boston Bodyworker's old Downtown Crossing location.  I left BBW feeling better, though.

The massage therapist was pleasant, and the music, temperature and atmosphere were not distracting.  It was kind of a bland experience, honestly.  My aches and pains were back within a few days.  I might have to bite the bullet and trek over to Copley to go back to BBW.

I uploaded a photo of a sign inside the massage room that said "Gratuities appreciated but not required."  The website's About Us/Hours page states "No tipping.  Balanced Health practitioners do not accept gratuities. Our therapists want to help reduce your pain and stress, not add to it with the confusion of worrying about how much or when to tip."

I only have two, very minor, complaints:
    1. An ad came on the music station during my massage
    2. The gratuity policy is confusing- the website says one thing, and signs in the practice rooms say another.

I am probably one of Balanced Health's most loyal customers. I go once a week for acupuncture and massage and have taken several yoga classes there (yoga's not really my thing, but hey, I gave it a shot).

As others have already noted, this is not a spa. I think of it as a wellness center, especially since I go to acupuncture for a medical condition.

I've seen several massage therapists and each one has his/her own style. Sometimes, I end up sleeping and snoring on the table and sometimes my sessions are more like physical therapy. EVERY time, I leave Balanced Health feeling much better than went I went in. Also, the practitioners will help by making suggestions about how to stretch, sit, stand, and modify other behaviors during visits to make me feel better.

As for acupuncture. What can I say? My symptoms have lessened to the point where I was able to stop taking one of the several medications I'm on for my condition. The acupuncturists are focused on treating the whole person - mind/body/spirit. I hope that doesn't sound esoteric but they don't just stick a bunch of needles in you and hope you feel better. Like the massage therapists, I've been given advice on simple changes like meditation and making small nutritional changes in my diet to help me between visits.

The only downside is this: These people are crazy booked! Book your appointment a couple of weeks out. Don't expect to wander in at 6pm on a Thursday night and get a massage. It's not going to happen and please don't hassle the receptionist about it. They are kind, sweet and want to help you as best they can.

For the record, even though it sounds like I'm under their spell, I DO NOT have a business affiliation with them. I am just a happy, happy customer.

I've been to balanced health for two massages with two practitioners, about a year apart.  The massages were very good, but not spectacular.  In fairness, I compare everyone to my favorite massage therapist who I can't always get to when I need a massage, and most people don't measure up.  So take that for whatever it's worth.

I like the fact that Balanced Health approaches massage clinically as a way to address overall health, and not just for some pampering.  They seem to know a lot about the body, movement patterns, and muscles, and they give suggestions for stretching and ergonomic advice for daily life. They incorporate stretching into the massage as well, which I like.

They charge more than most massage therapists I've seen in the area (about $10 - $15 more for a 60 min massage).  This would be fine if there weren't so many other clinical massage options in the Boston area charging a lower rate (who also don't accept/require tips).  I've never tried their yoga or acupuncture, because even though the location is convenient to my work, their prices are well above what I normally pay for those services.

The facility is very clean and calming.  I think the look of the place captures the space between spa and clinic better than most.  You feel a sense of zen at the same time that you know you are in a serious place, if that makes sense.  All the employees I've met have been very nice.

I think you get a good treatment here.   If their prices were better aligned with the competition, I'd go back more and try more services.  I also think they need to get an online scheduler for massage.

Ahhhhh. I had a massage at Balanced  Health earlier today and I've been rendered completely useless since.

BH is simple, clean, and understated. But a fantastic spot in Downtown Crossing!  Walked by last month and got in on their spring deal - 5 massages for under $300. What a deal!  The hubby and I are going to split them up, and we'll have a thumb war for who gets a third.

I went today, the day after finishing my first year of hell, I mean, grad school.  Man, what a perfect way to celebrate.  Franklin was like a big ol' teddy bear.  His gentle voice made me feel right at ease, and we talked about areas in which I hold stress that needed extra attention.  I opted for a full-body massage, with a little focus on my low back and hips.

I'm used to a stronger massage, more of a deep tissue style, but I prefer Franklin's approach.  Softer, yet firm pressure, hitting the major pressure points, and working with myofascial release and muscle insertion points.  He'd go to one area and I'd be thinking what's he doing over there? And then I'd get it - the slow release of tension and freedom in that area.  Amazing.

The only complaint I have is that whatever music he had on, it must've been a satellite thing, had a commercial on 5-hour energy come in the middle. Odd. Random.

I'm already looking forward to making my 2nd (and hopefully if I win, my 3rd) appointment.  Great spot.

Wondering why they don't accept gratuities...

I really like that they use lotion and not oil, because I was able to head out into the real world without looking like a grease mongrel.

I started going here for massages after finding a deal on one of the Groupon type sites (I forget which at this point). I've tried three masseuses, but Franklin is my favorite. He does deep tissue exactly where I need it, and has significantly helped in areas where I didn't even realize I need it. He takes time to sit down with me before every appointment to find out how I'm doing and which areas need extra focus. I've never had anyone do that before! He also sits down with me after the massage and discusses some possible behavior modifications I can make to help my tense upper back.

Balanced Health also does not accept gratuities, which makes the entire experience easier. The massages are only slightly more expensive than what I've seen elsewhere, but end up being cheaper with this policy. They also have deals where you can buy multiple massage packages which work out to about $50 for a 60 minute massage.

I wasn't impressed with Balanced Health.

I asked for a stronger pressure massage at the beginning, and it was incredibly weak. She mostly used the length of her arm to massage, which has a huge surface area and doesnt get out any knots. I might as well have used a foam roller. Normally, the masseuse asks about the pressure once or twice during the massage, but mine never asked.

So beyond a mediocre massage, the total atmosphere was not spa quality. I had to get up and pour myself water after checking in, and the water was in little plastic cups. There wasn't a locker room, but beyond that, the bathroom wasn't the most clean and it had no face wash or other products you normally get, especially when the masseuse rubs regular lotion into your face to massage it.

The staff were very friendly, no issues there.  But I wouldn't go back.

I began here with the Wednesday yoga class. a 5:45 Vinyasa flow class lasting and hour and a half. The class is a great workout while also aligning well contributing to the mental well being I have come to associate with a great yoga experience. I still attend classes about four months into discovering this place.

The down side to my experience here are the limited amounts of classes. The classes are extremely small (I have never experienced more than five people) which is great but can contribute to a waiting list so you can never walk-in but rather need to sign up well in advance.

I have had several times where a mistake as made with my schedule and while staff was very apologetic and made every effort to appease me I am frustrated t how many times errors have been made when I have signed up for massage or yoga classes. Even when I had the appointment written out mistakes have been made. I made one appointment a month out and somehow the time was changed (I had the appointment on a card written out). I was then told I would have to wait ANOTHER month before they could fit me in for that same time slot!

I still continue to take yoga classes here but have found myself too frustrated in trying to schedule  massage so I have given up with that aspect of this company.

I received 2 60 minute massages for Valentine's Day from my boyfriend at this place and I was very eager to use them. Due to recently having a baby my back has been in horrible condition so I finally figured out a time to get a massage done. Scheduling was rather tight but we worked something out and got me in within 2 weeks of my initial call.

The place is easily accessible to the T (downtown crossing stop will put you right onto Chauncy St.) which is great.  As you walk in there is a sense of calm which is relaxing and the girls at the desk are very nice and friendly.  First time clients have to fill out the basic health paperwork which is typical.  The wait was not even 10 minutes, just enough time to sit down relax and mentally prepare yourself for a good massage.  They offer water and use of the bathrooms before going into the room which is a plus (not all places suggest things).  Hannah is very warm and personable and as I later found out a great masseuse!

We went over my bad areas, explained that I recently had a baby and my upper back has been a mess so she would mainly work my back area with some focus on my feet, neck, arms/hands.  The room is dimly lit, comfy, clean with relaxing music.

Hannah did a great job on my horrible back and I admit some times it hurt but that is just how bad my back has gotten but after my massage was over I really felt loosened up even though I need a lot more work done.  After the massage was over Hannah and I sat down to go over what she did and made some suggestions to help me not get so tense in my back area.  Great suggestions and good recommendation as to when to come in again for my next massage.

I highly recommend this place and already made my next appointment! I would definitely go here without having received a gift certificate.  Oh and another cool aspect is that if you pay for your massages, the tip is already included in their price so it leaves all the figuring out done for and I think tha tis a great concept.

I had an excellent massage experience here.  The facility was clean and cheerful.  Emily, my massage therapist, asked the usual questions about injuries and stressors, but had a calm and soothing demeanor.  Sometimes massage therapists don't seem to hear what I'm saying, or just seem like they want to get on to the next client.  Definitely not so with Emily.

The massage itself was excellent.  I booked a second appointment on the spot.  I don't live near this location (Downtown Crossing) but I think I'm a convert.  Also, Emily sent a card asking how I was doing and repeating the advice she gave regarding some of my old aches and pains.  That's customer service.

At $90 for an hour, this is a pricier place for a massage, although because Balanced Health DOES NOT ACCEPT GRATUITIES, you come out about where you would for a $75 hourly massage.  I may start rotating this place in with my more usual, and also excellent, Body Mechanics.

Amazing place! From the minute you walk in, it's very welcoming and relaxing. I had a massage with Andrew. He led me to our room and asked me if I had areas that needed focusing on. I don't even think I've had a masseuse ask me that. It was actually the first time I had a professional massage by another guy, so I wasn't sure how it was gonna go. Well, the bottom line is...one of the best massages I have ever had. Make an appointment with andrew. He's awesome!

I'm still a bit confused about the meaning and capitalization of the name, but everything else about altTHERA is a no-brainer.

I've been searching for a masseuse that I'm in love with since I've moved to Boston. (And I mean that in the strictest of platonic ways!)

It's been hard -- do I go cheap, far and serviceable out to the massage school clinic in Waltham?  Do I go hoity-toity like Beacon Hill's Core de Vie?  Do I go to the reasonably priced Backworks, where it's the masseuse mix is like a box of chocolates and once a man named Sammy made me cry?

But I am searching no more!  altThera will be my go-to when I'm in pain.

It's on the pricier side of reasonable, but they don't allow tipping, so that saves 10% right there.

It's relaxing and classy (think nice big brown leather couch), but not overly fancy.

I'd say it's 2 blocks from my office, but maybe not so for you, so I'll say it's conveniently located downtown near every subway line.

But best of all, the MASSAGE.  Amazingly therapeutic.  Best massage, bar none.  I told him what hurt and he stopped it from hurting.  And really, that's what I'm paying a masseuse for--not lime slices in my water and a terry cloth robe.

If you are interested in overall health and well-being, this is a great place to become a regular.
I have had a few massages here and the practitioners are all fantastic.  The atmosphere is quite soothing. I would recommend heading there a little early so you can sit in the waiting room and decompress before your treatment.  Katie gave me my most recent massage and she was wonderful.  She sat with me afterwards and took some time to explain some good stretches for me to do that will help my specific back problem.
I am eager to try the yoga here yet it does seem a little pricey.  Since I like the place so much I am thinking it's probably worth it.

Finally!   The perfect place for a massage.    As a long time believer in the importance of regular massages, I have spent the last 9 years scouring Boston for just the right place.  Thanks to a Living Social Coupon - I finally found it!  They have mastered just the right balance of relaxing and spa like, but still focused on holistic healing and understanding the way the body works.   I have had three massages, from three different therapists, all of which were fantastic.  The space is great, the location is ideal, and the price is remarkable. I love that gratuity is already included, and they have lots of great packages, monthly deals, and offers.  Hands down - the best experience at the best price in all of Boston!

Balanced Health is great at massages.  That's all I've tried, but I've loved going there for my self, as well as gifting their services to friends who need prenatal massages.  They keep a clean and beautiful environment without the snobbery or frills of a luxury spa.  The massage therapists I've experienced have been great. Their skills were beyond just relaxation, but made me leave feeling so much better then I've arrived with, but also the therapists gave me helpful tips in my everyday posture and stretching techniques.  Great value and environment and non-pretentious professional staff.

What am I thankful for today on Thanksgiving?  Finding Balanced Health this year.  I've been a resident of Back Bay for over 5 years and have probably tried every massage place in town.  Over the summer, Groupon had a great deal on a massage here, and I have been going back ever since.  They have a large staff of masseuses.  I went through most of them to find the ones that fit my preferences best (I like extremely deep tissue).  Bill, the owner, always has a smile on his face and everyone there is very pleasant.  I have lower back pain from throwing it out a couple years ago and going to them a couple times a week have really eased it.  I've also tried acupuncture and yoga there too -- so far I'm a very very happy customer of theirs.

I purchased a Groupon deal for a one hour massage from Balanced Health.  And, it was the most amazing, targeted massage.

Balanced Health is not a spa.  They do not give you a robe, a relaxation area, tea/wine, a sauna, etc.  They are focused more on general well-being than pampering (i.e. they offer acupuncture and yoga classes, not facials and manicures).

But, that being said, this was the most effective massage I have ever received.  When I entered, they gave me a questionnaire about the type of work I do, where I tend to hold my tension, etc.  Then, the masseuse sat down and spoke with me about my answers.  As I hold a lot of tension in my neck area and suffer from severe headaches, he recommended targeting my neck/shoulder area, but said it was up to me.  I agreed.

He used myofascial massage, which is not the typical Swedish massage that most people are used to.  It does not have the same deep tissue "ahhhhh" feeling that (at least for me) disappears as soon as the massage stops or shortly thereafter.  But, my neck felt so different once he had finished.  He was really in-tune with my muscles, finding knots I did not knew I had.  He continually checked in and asked me how I was doing.  And, after the massage, he sat down with me and discussed what he noticed and why I might have tension in certain areas.

He recommended that I continue to focus on my neck area for future massages, and I will definitely take him up on that suggestion!

And, the massage table was heated.

While I love the relaxing, spa atmosphere, I will definitely return to Balanced Health over any spa I have been to so far in the Boston area.  Frankly, if I want to sit in a comfortable chair, wear a bathrobe and drink tea, I can do it at home.  If I want a knowledgeable, effective massage, I will pay for a massage at Balanced Health.

I visited today for an hour-long massage and thought it was a wonderful experience all around. The location is terrific for those who work downtown and is very easy to get to from the T for those who do not. The facilities were pleasant, tidy, and relaxing without being overbearing. The receptionists were attentive and helpful both in person and on the phone. And, of course, my masseuse was wonderful. A great place. I booked a second massage as soon as I got home.

The fact that tip is included won't appeal to everyone, but it does make for an easy process and, with the level of service I had this time around, I probably would have tipped even higher than the tip I suspect they build in.

They recently had a lot of success with a promotional deal on another website (well-knwown to many yelpers, I'm sure) that I imagine has brought them a lot of new business - myself included. I hope they continue to offer great service as they grow.

walking into the unobtrusive, hidden storefront of 30 chauncy in downtown crossing, i was struck by how clean, beautifully minimalist and spare the interiors of the reception area were, and how well air-conditioned it is, a welcome relief from the hot, summer day.  the space begged for quiet, with a wide corridor opening into numerous rooms with massage beds, terminating with a small yoga studio at the end of the hallway.  the receptionist greeted me, and within minutes, i met karen, my masseuse.

karen and i chatted about expectations of the massage, where my problem areas occurred, and where she should focus and avoid.  the pressure she used was perfect, and she concentrated on the pressure points in my upper back and shoulders, where i carry the "weight of the world," while still paying attention to my legs, feet, arms, face and scalp.

having been introduced to this place via groupon, they offered a promotion for the day of your visit for 50% off services.  they also do not accept gratuities as they consider this as their core business.  i will definitely consider this place if in need of some more detensioning!

Awesome! This is the experience I've been looking for over the past five months. Staff was really friendly and my massage therapist listened closely to my requests and gave me exactly what I had wanted. Everything was easy and I left feeling great.

A TRUE OASIS. Massage, acupuncture, small class yoga... Balanced Health just does everything so well.

I have experienced nothing but kindness and excellent care at Balanced Health. I always leave feeling restored.

My back generally bothers me and I have had a few professional massages in the past but they tended to be underwhelming.  A bit dismayed I had not been in a while but saw a great deal for Balanced Health via Groupon and purchased a 60 min massage.  After my first visit, I booked another appointment on the spot.

The place is small but tidy and clean, with a pleasant atmosphere.  The receptionist adds to this as she is extremely nice and always smiling.  Additionally, she is not overbearing at all and was extremely welcoming both times I have been (despite me arriving slightly late).

I have been twice so far and both massages were fantastic.  The masseuses were very attentive to what I had to say and this showed during the massage.

I recently purchased three more massages as both experiences (with two different masseuses) were easily the best massages I have had.

While recommending this place is not very wise since it will make it more difficult  for me to book in the future, I could not help myself given the great experiences I had.  Additionally, it is located downtown and has great hours.

I tried a couple other massage places that weren't very good before finding Balanced Health.  Outstanding!  The massage therapists are very good (I have tried three of them, and they have all been top notch) - and I'm picky.  But I haven't had a bad massage since I started going there.  Bill, the owner, is very nice and that must set the tone for the whole place.  The area is clean, modern (not shabby).  They also have yoga, meditation and acupuncture.  I haven't tried those things yet, but I will!  They also occasionally have money-saving specials so that you can get a great deal on a massage or membership.

All I can say is wow. I mean really, this was like such a great experience. I hadn't gotten a massage in years, but this definitely hit the spot (or all the spots) actually.  It was so relaxing & Megan just had a way w/ her hands that made all those tense areas just disappear. I was glad http://livingsocial.com had this coupon cause I wouldn't have bothered otherwise. This place is right in downtown crossing which makes it super convenient.

I am in love with this place! My therapist, Hannah, was amazing and really restored range of motion to my sad body. The place is relaxing, right off the downtown crossing stop, and a great sanctuary. They don't even allow you to tip-truly one of the first times I've walked out happy and unstressed! I wish more places like these could open up in NYC.

Yesterday, I  had the second best massage of my life at Balanced Health ! The only reason that it wasn't the best is because I feel that your first massage is always memorable. I wont tell you my masseuse's name because selfishly, I don't want everyone booking with her ! This was my second visit there (my first visit was from a Groupon and they had some offer and that's how ended up there yesterday). I stayed away way too long. I will now come back on a monthly basis, that's how good they are !

i really enjoy altTHERA. I feel that both of the massage therapists i've had have been honest with me about ways i can correct the tension in my neck and back, and were candid about what i can do relative to what i can afford (i'm a grad student). Both of them were GREAT at what they did, I went in with so much tension in my upper back that it was difficult to sleep, and left feeling as though I was floating. I felt so relaxed throughout the whole experience. They even suggested muscle rubs I can use in between my visits to help the knots in my shoulders. I can't wait to go again soon!

I am an active runner with a very demanding job with long hours and i was in desperate need of a good massage.  altTHERA was great! It's the comfort and atmosphere of a spa with the medical aspect of a clinic.  They were extremely professional and efficient.  It was more than just a massage, I learned new stretches and noticed an improvement in my running.  What I like is that it wasn't a one-off experience, they really cared about my health, and gave me a plan to take care of myself.  They also have a lot of great deals and promotions.  I booked my next appointment and received 50% off!!!!

best massage ever - if you're looking for a spa to be pampered in, this is not it.  if you're looking for your body/back to feel the best it ever has and enter into a relaxed trance-like state for days - you've found your winner.

I went to Balanced Health for a massage as a Groupon, and found it to be one of the best massages I have ever had.  The place is mellow and relaxing, but my masseuse, Buki, is in the real reason I left the place so relaxed and knot-less.  We discussed what kind of massage I was interested in, and she delivered 150%.  Two friends also got massages here through Groupon - we all had different masseuses but all left raving about the place.  I'm so glad I discovered this place through Groupon.  I only wish they accepted tips, because their masseuses deserve them!

I live and work in the Financial District. It is great to see a well-run business like AltTHERA succeed in this area. I've had the opportunity to try the acupuncture, yoga and massage services there (massage is my favorite). The staff is excellent and it is great to go someplace where tips aren't accepted and the scheduling is accurate and honest. It is refreshing to visit a service provider that truly values your time. I highly recommend AltTHERA.
