Balance Health Center is conveniently located in center city, making it easy to get away during the day for a quick adjustment or massage. Dr. Chris is excellent and takes great care of his patients. He is very efficient and flexible in terms of appointments. I do find it somewhat difficult to get through to them on the phone to make appointments but they will always call back! They take insurance for chiropractic care and massage. Will keep going back!

Meh is the perfect word for this place.
My friend and I both bought "Meditative Massages" on groupon, and we finally decided to check it out. We had a hard time finding parking on Sunday afternoon, so we called the center to tell them we were running a few minutes late.
When I walked in, I was expecting (like others, apparently) more of a spa-like area. When you walk in, it almost looks like a bar (perhaps because there's a huge "bar" around the one guy that was seen in the "center". There were oils and bath salts all along one wall, and then a bunch of chairs all stacked up on top of each other in the next room over. It was quite odd. My friend and I informed the guy at the "bar" who we were, and he said to go downstairs to wait in the "small waiting room".
Small waiting room was right, it is a small corner that has a bench built into the wall. My massuise soon came over and escorted me into a "massage room", which felt more like a room in a doctors office, in a long hallway - it was quite odd. She asked me what brought me in, and I explained to her that "I saw a groupon for a Meditative Massage and I've never had one so I decided to check it out." She responded, "it's basically the same as a regular massage, it just includes sage and jasmine oils. they smell....ooookay." I nod, and say okay I would like to try out the sage/jasmine oils as opposed to the unscented (which she seemed to be pushing). The massage was just ooookay. I suppose it was relaxing to have an hour to myself to just not think about things, but the pressure (which there was none of ) and the fact that her freezing hands were focused more on weird angles than actually massaging any part of me, was weird. She kept sliding her hands under my back (while laying face up) and then worked my neck a bit while I was still laying on my back. Other massages I have had (and I haven't had many, just two other ones) focused more on my back/neck and there was considerably more pressure. This was a very light, weird touch. I wasn't expecting that since I was told it was just like a regular massage except with different oils. The massuise was pretty nice, otherwise.
I am glad I bought a groupon, because If I would have paid $150 for this, I would be highly upset.
My friends told me her massiuse, Svetlana had dry, cracked hands that felt pretty icky on her skin, as one can imagine. This was my friends first experience with a massage, so I told her to definitely not assume they are all like that.
After your massage, you walk back upstairs to the "bar" and are not informed as to what to do - I asked if the guy(behind the bar) if he could give the maussise her tip. He then showed me these tiny envelopes where you can write your massagers' name and your name on the envelope and place a tip inside.
***Long story short: No frills, not much pressure during the massage, un-spa like atmosphere. I would not pay full price ever to go here. I've been to massage "centers" in malls that give better massages. I would not return, and would not recommend it for a massage, since I was told the meditative was the same as other massages - so that is what I am basing this on - it was much worse than any massage I've ever had. Also, it is only getting 2 stars because my massage ended at 1:57. I did arrive a couple minutes late (even though I called to inform them) but I wasn't seen right away, and didn't get in the room and have my massage start until 1:10 or later. So I had a less than 60 minute massage as well, that was not all my fault. The least they could of done was go to 2pm, I thought that was not good customer service. *** -

I've been here many times before (massages, chiriopractor etc) but it has declined in my eyes gradually....while the adjustments themselves are good, the way they run the business is horrible! I had an appointment scheduled, but because they have been allowing more and more walk-ins , I wasn't seen till 50 min after my appointment! What is the point of making an appointment then?!!!! This is ridiculous, especially when you make time allocations for these appointments out of your busy schedule!

I saw a special deal online for a summer "sun" massage so I decided to try it out. My massage wasn't bad, but the experience wasn't what I expected. Everyone was nice and I had a pleasant experience, but just not what I expected...and here's why:
First of all, the description and impression that I got of the "sun" massage was that it was going to be a refreshing, lemon-y massage...however, what I received was just a plain, swedish massage, with a scent-less oil.
Secondly, the place was not very spa-like at all. I guess I should not have assumed that it would be, considering they are called a Health Center but my massage just wasn't the same without all the bells and whistles of a spa. Walking downstairs to the massage rooms, I felt like I was walking into a doctor's office...it was a plain, sterile looking hallway, flanked with rooms. The rooms were simple and clean, but the walls are pretty thin. It was nice and tranquil once I got into the massage room, but it's definitely not like that throughout the establishment.
I may come back to try the chiropractor but I don't think I will have another massage here. -

Very disappointed with the Balance Health Center. I bought my wife a massage here as a present. The coupon expired days ago and the Center refused to honor it even AFTER I offered to purchase another massage session.
Perhaps they do not want new customers? You can count that I will not be recommending them. -

I went for the "Earth massage escape" off of a Groupon special. when i think of "spa" i think of a place that offers showers, lemon-infused water, a sauna, etc. but this place offers none of that.
I just walked in, waited downstairs for a few minutes, had a 55-minute massage and was out of there. I guess that's good if you want an in-and-out experience but that wasn't really what i was looking for. the place was a bit hard and unwelcoming but the staff was nice and friendly. the massage itself was nice and relaxing, but it seems he had no idea i was there for the "earth massage escape" package (http://www.balanceheal...) because although there was a brief foot massage, it was more like an all-around regular body massage. and i really don't know what oils he used, i can't tell if it was "sage and cedarwood" or just peppermint.
the experience overall was alright, nothing to rave about but it wasn't bad. -

I had a great massage today from Svetlana. I asked her to concentrate especially on my feet and legs, since I was sore from the half marathon yesterday, and she sure did.
I've had a few uncomfortable massages in the past, and this was surely not one of them- the pressure was perfect and she worked out all the knots in my back.
4 stars instead of 5 because I would have absolutely loved to shower there- I was not too thrilled to put my clothes back on over my greased-up body. -

Balance Health Center motivates and empowers you to live a better, healthier life. Attend a yoga class, get a chiropractic adjustment, let go with a massage, learn how to manage your stress and do much more here. BHC's approach is a holistic and self-mending one.
It's a relief to hear since most health services want to convince you that you need them indefinitely which can seem daunting. BHC practitioners are inquisitive and listen to your personal health needs then impart knowledge for self-maintenance. They also sell lots of natural oils, teas and other remedies to help you function at max potential.Listed in: Primp My Hide

Can't beat a 90 minute deep tissue? You can. I have had some back ones.
This is not the case at Balance. It was the perfect balance between a 'get in there and work out those tension spots' and 'calming, relaxing spa style' massage. I am spacing on the name of the super sweet guy that gave me the massage BUT he was professional, listened to exactly what I wanted and well, that hand to arm to elbow thing he does is pretty much heaven.
I did get it on living social so I was able to afford it. Looks like as a birthday gift or a big treat to myself is when I will able to return.

I got a great deal on an hour massage...$49! Kathy was great. Rooms were clean. Massage portion actually lasted the full hour (some places its actually 50 minutes plus time to change). Wish the tea bar was open, though.

I came to balance for a 60-minute "meditative" massage that I bought on Groupon. Maybe I'm not an experienced enough massage recipient, but I don't think you are supposed to end up bruised the day after. The massage therapist was working through some knots in my back and did ask me if the pressure was too much, and it wasn't, so she continued. A more experienced or knowledgeable therapist might have known she was manipulating my skin too much. I have bruises up and down my back today.
The massage was otherwise just okay. The therapist was nice and the place was quiet and clean. When I came in, the therapist explained the process, and then asked if there were any specific areas she should focus on. I told her to focus on my feet and legs as I had just run 10-mile Broad Street Run the day prior. However, she didn't seem to actually pay any special attention to those areas once she got to work.
When I went to pay the tip, I was told the original cost without the Groupon for a 60 minute massage was $170, which is outrageous. I've had far better massages with better therapists for less than $100. So I'd go elsewhere next time. -

I have had one massage and one chiropractice adjustment here.
The massage was fine. I did not like the adjustment at all. The Dr. was totally different than the woman I used to see in New York.
I wll not likely return.
They also offerr yoga classes - which sounds intriguing. -

Kathy at Balance gives a great deep tissue ("Moon?") massage, adjusting her pressure appropriately per request. I came in feeling just a bit tense and left feeling like butter. Deep tissue massages can hurt, kind of like using a foam roller at the gym. But it's worth it when you feel the knots just melt away after a good bit of wincing pain. I did not check out their regular prices, but using a Groupon I'd definitely recommend Balance for a deep tissue massage any day.

I'm giving four stars for my massage therapist, Drew, not the spa/health center itself. Drew gave me an hour-long massage, which I purchased using a groupon-type deal from Travel Zoo. He was great. Perfect amount of pressure. Paid special attention to areas that were bothering me. Very relaxing and effective massage.
The center itself leaves much to be desired. There's no real seating area, just an uncomfortable bench. The young lady at reception (which seems to be an old bar) was very unwelcoming. -

Had a living social deal for half off a 90 minute massage- sweet!! Could I stand to be massaged for 90 whole minutes- would I be bored I wondered??
Umm noo- the 90 minutes flew by in a flash and was close to heavenly. Apparently a 90 minute massage is anything but boring. I almost slipped into a deep sleep as the massage therapist's skilled hands eased away all my aches and pains..
Now for the bad- at $82.50 this was a steal, but for the normal outlandish price of $160 there's no way I'd return. Even if it is 90 minutes, my bank account cringes at that price tag... -

Wow, I feel like I've walked into another universe altogether. A center that approaches wellness from a holistic perspective and provides a litany of services to address all those problems that Western medicine and traditional treatments have failed to cure all in one place?
If I had a "chi" and if I knew what that was, I'm sure my 'chi' would dig this place. It's airy, open, painted in all light and soothing colors. It's a New Age haven.
I've just recently started going to this place after some aches and pains weren't going away. Ah - the joys of growing older! Upon recommendation, I've been going to Edward for some massage therapy - who worked - magic - I kid you, not - that man knows how to work with his hands.
I also tried acupuncture for the first time - and I was skeptical at first - How powerful could little needles be? But holy cow, was I ever wrong... Jenny, the acupuncturist, assesses all your ailments (from A to Z, leaves no stone unturned) and treats you accordingly. I left feeling (as she put it) 'accu-stoned' and on for several hours.
Both of these treatments have alleviated my ailments - they have really has made a difference and because of that I plan on returning. As much as my wallet lets me.
First time massage client pay a reasonable $49 and first time acupuncture assessment and hour-long treatment for $99. Can't beat that. They also accept certain insurance plans - Bonus!
P.S. The Chiropractor (a cool looking New-Age guy with the appropriate ponytail) practices out in the open with his patients near the front desk and bar (which kinda freaks me out - regardless of how good he is, I think I'd prefer getting my treatments in private)Listed in: Rittenhouse Meanderings, Working Hard for the Purty

Balance Health Center approaches chiropractic care from a holistic perspective. It isn't just about cracking your back. They have on staff massage therapists, an acupuncturist, a nutritionist and a variety of other holistic health care. I went to Balance after getting in an accident and never once did I feel like I was being milked for cash as people tend to complain about when talking about chiropractic care. Dr. Chris recommended sleeping positions, exercises and nutritional changes that helped me make lasting adjustments (pardon the pun) in the way I approach my health.
Balance has an attitude of putting the patients care in her own hands, with qualified professionals to help walk them through it. -

I got a massage at Balance because of a $60 Groupon and its great yelp reviews. For a place that normally charges $150 per massage, I was definitely looking forward to my 60 minutes of bliss.
Boy was I disappointed!
First, my 60 minute massage was more like 45 minutes. We started five minutes late (not because I was late), and ended 10 minutes early. Second, even though my masseuse used good pressure and had good technique, the massage seemed rushed and at times a little clumsy (he had squeaky shoes and would bump into things). Lastly, and by far the worst, he put paper (the type that is used in a doctor's examining room)on the pillow where you normally put your face on. I appreciate that he was trying to be hygenic, but it was rough and crinkly. Everytime the masseuse would massage my neck and shoulders, it would crinkle and be very distracting. At times it even got in the way and the masseuse had to swat it away. The entire thing was very distracting and prevented me from relaxing. The situation could have been resolved if they used towels instead of paper.
All in all, I was not impressed and would not go back. In fact, I feel like I overpaid even though I used a Groupon. I'm just grateful that I didn't purchase it at the normal price. -
