Review Highlights
I had been to Bakeway a few times and always thought it would be a great place to sit and work (good lighting, good coffee, wifi and sugar rush at the ready), and finally did this morning!
A friend and I went in for a morning of productivity and started off the right way: coffee and pear brioche tart. The tart was delicious and so was the coffee, and if you bring your own cup they only charge a dollar for it. We stayed there for about three and a half hours and heard not one complaint from the staff. There are electrical outlets in two corners, and since there weren't many people we didn't have a problem.
Highly recommended for food and fighting procrastination. (They've also got a wall fridge of more substantial meals and juices, iced teas, etc.)
Delicious cupcakes that I don't have to commute into the city for!
I'm picky about my cupcakes. Usually, either the cake part is too dry or the frosting is too sweet or gritty. But, these were near perfect. Their cream cheese icing was superior to that of any I've tried in Queens.
Their salads and prepared food all looked fresh and appealing,
The place is spotless and immaculate.
AND they have free wi-fi!
When in Astoria, I'll be satisfying my sweet tooth here.
What was it that sealed the deal with my Bakeway NYC affair?
Was it the fantastic iced coffee that they melted the sugar for without my asking?
The insanely great and chocolatey chunk cookies?
The FREE cookie given to me (with a smile) on my first visit?
The $3 simply dressed pasta salad with olives, muenster & peppers?
The perfect $3 container of grapes and gouda cheese?
The $6 nicoise salad with fresh green beans and all the fixins?
The bright space with beautiful clean display and super friendly staff/owners?
Well, I might never know, but I will always wonder why more purveyors of baked goods and other potential deliciousness are not able to read my mind and make me happy like Bakeway does. It's damn sexy.
A great place to work for a few hours, they have internet available and good lighting.
I come here every once in a while to grab a quick snack, even their food is expensive. I recommend getting the fruit bowl though, it's much worth your money. The granola cereal with yogurt is great as well. Service is pretty good but can be slow at time.
lotsa sweet and savory pastries ...many french/italian/greek options
a lot of coffee varieties from all of the world
Many cupcake flavors
Never had anything here that wasn't yummy!
I think they have wifi too.
Maybe I just go in at the right time (usually early/mid morning), but this place always looks immaculate. I'm not one to indulge in the pastries, but everything LOOKS amazing.
They have a wide selection of Yogi Tea (which I LOVE) for sale by the box (and I assume by the cup as well). There's also a nice refrigerated case with great variety and pre-made breakfast lunch items.
BUT, I come here for the coffee. I walk out of my way every morning for their dark roast. It's the best coffee I've found in Astoria, and quite honestly, it might be the best I've found almost anywhere. All sizes for under $2.
The staff is friendly, and after less than a week of visiting, they started recognizing me, so my drink is ready before I am at the counter to pay. I REALLY like this when I'm in a rush in the morning.
I'm knocking off a star for 2 reasons.
#1: They were out of Splenda for like, 3 days straight!!! This is so unacceptable. I had to provide my own for of those days (I keep my wallet well stocked), but when I ran out, I was forced to use....Sweet n' Low. BLECH. Come on, you are like 20 feet from Trade Fair/C-Town. Go buy some Splenda for your loyal customers!
#2: I haven't had any of their food or baked goods. I will come and update if I ever decide to splurge, and adjust my star-age accordingly.
MMMMM!! I love the coffee here!! Bakeway has a pretty vast selection of pastries too, apparently from various parts of the world (I'll be honest, I didn't know that until reading some other reviews here). I had an apple turnover which was absolutely perfect! Again the coffee was really good (just the original coffee, not a mocha/cappuccino special thing. I didn't try those)
They have some seating which seems to never be available when I'm in there, but judging by the amount of laptops you see I think they have wi-fi, which is pretty sweet. I've been canvasing the neighborhood trying to find a place to do some work in but I wouldn't recommend Bakeway for that. Too crowded and since it's not the biggest of places maybe a bit too loud to concentrate. If you're on a similar mission try Panera Bread over by Kaufman Studios. They're pretty big, I think they have Wi-Fi and there are always a sizeable amount of people with laptops working and studying!
Bakeway is by far the best lookout post on Broadway. I was just there this morning, grabbing a coffee and reading a book but all too frequently losing my concentration to every Astorian strolling by the massive window.
The staff behind the counter are super friendly and the coffee even better....Light Roast forever! Nothing goes better with the coffee than one of their light and buttery croissants and I'm frequently seen littering Astoria with its crumbs.
Their daily dinner options aren't a bad choice if you're too lazy to cook...Great prices too. Along the back wall is also a wide variety of rare drinks and iced teas to go along.
I only wish they had couches or comfy chairs, it's probably for the best though because I'd probably start taking naps there.
I went in here today and I just can't help myself. If there is an equation for tasty it would equal Bakeway NYC. Subtract your ususal pastries and crusty stuff that at some sub-par bakeries and it would still equal Bakeway NYC. Divide some croissants or some mouth watering donuts between friends and it's price-bliss.
I had to say how good it was three times it sticks to you better that way, like all the delicacies at this place that will have you raving as much as I. Check it out it's sure to have your tastebuds doing somersaults over common sense once you have bought more than you intended which I did. Ononmontopeia: Mmmmmmm.... does it some justice but you will have to drool on your own time to see what I mean:)
Bakeway is fantastic. The place just looks clean. It does have the pastries sitting out and not behind a glass case, but that doesn't bother me at all. Every beverage I've tried has been delish. I highly recommend the spiced chai. Also, huge bonus - the staff is pleasant. Great service every time no matter who's working.
Living around the corner, guests inevitably want to go in for a coffee. I've never heard one complaint and most of the time they ask me if I still go there regularly. If you're in Astoria, get yourself to Bakeway!
This place is great! Croissant was the best I've had in my neighborhood (I wish it was a bit more golden and had more butter thought) and so was the Latte (I wish the cup was bigger so I could dip my croissant in to get the last of the foam though)
The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is cause they don't have plates and silverware for food to stay. I HATE using those plastic take out containers. SO wasteful.
I am going to be frequenting Bakeway more often!!!!!
Bakeway is a really nice deviation from the other joints on this stretch of Broadway & also from so many of the bakeries in Astoria. Since it's opened I've tried many of the baked goods from the bar, as well as some of the savory stuff like the premade salads. I wouldn't call the bakery items earth shattering, but always satisfying.
Yesterday I brought the Red Velvet cupcakes to a birthday party & they were a big hit. Obviously because we are so predictable, 2 other people brought cupcakes so we had a tasting & Bakeway won. The cupcakes were very dense & fudgy, more like a serious piece of cake made into an identifiable cupcake shape. Ok, I guess that's the definition of a cupcake, but hopefully you get my drift.
I wouldn't really want to hang out here, it's pretty stark & uninviting, but the staff is nice & it's a great place to grab something to take to a party or for a late afternoon snack. Also they never look at me funny when I get one rugelach or a single pig in a blanket (which are delicious, by the way).
They serve Illy Coffee, which is a plus - though being across from a DD, they don't often get my coffee business. Old habits die hard.
This is one of the few bakeries in Astoria I really enjoy going to, because it always has a nice, clean look & feel. The chocolate chip cookies are amazing! Same for the chocolate croissant.
They have a nice selection of prepared sandwichy type foods, a really good bottled drink selection (everything from soda to Muscle Milk) and of course all the desserts you could ever want.
The hot food is just okay.. but that's not why you go there.
Bakeway made THE best chai I have ever had in my life. I wish there was one of these in Miami, so I could drink that deliciousness every single day. Needless to say, in by weekend-long stay in NYC, I had this amazing chai 2 times, and that's only because it was around the corner from my friend's apartment, where I was staying, and I spent most of my days wandering around Manhattan.
I also had an almond croissant from Bakeway, which I devoured on my return flight to Miami. It was delicious! The perfect amount of almonds on the outside and the right amount of yummy cream filling on the inside. All the pastries looked amazing, but I had to choose. This almond croissant definitely gave my favorite French croissant aux amandes a run for its money!
As long as my friend lives in Astoria, I'll be hitting up the Bakeway every time I visit!
This bakery is a great touch to the random selection of Broadway eateries, with a good mix of pastries, though it is pricey. I prefer the light roast coffee (which is still pretty powerful), and the red velvet cupcake is an unexpected delicious snack. It's a good place to chill out and people watch.
i stumbled upon this bakery on the way from the N-train stop to the Noguchi Museum in Astoria. my friend and i were looking for a place to grab a quick bite, and i was enticed by all the pastries on display in the middle of the room. not really knowing what was what (most of the pastries are labeled, but some aren't and it was confusing to figure out what everything was), we got the two things that looked the most unique (aka. not a croissant). they both turned out to be delicious!
item one: this popover type pastry where the main pastry was a tiny bit salty, but perfectly complimented the sweet cheese (? i think) that was inside. also had bits of apple in there i think? obviously i still don't know what it was that i ate, but it was pretty great.
item two: the girl behind the counter said it was french toast, but it was baked in a paper shell (cup? i'm bad at describing things today) so it was almost like a french toast cupcake. this was pretty rich, but it had bits of chocolate spread on some parts of the bread, and parts of it tasted bread-pudding like too. really good. though hard to finish because of the richness.
more thoughts:
- there were some apts across the street and i thought to myself how if i lived there, i would go to bakewaynyc everyday. and susequently be really fat. (but maybe happier?)
- you can watch the bakers make the food -- they have an open kitchen behind the glass.
- because of the above, the food is probably (it tasted it at least) really fresh.
thumbs up for randomly discovering this bakery! :)
Bakeway NYC has dependably delicious pastries, and the place is always sparkling clean and in perfect order. I just took a walk and saw that they are opening another shop on the corner of 30th Ave. and 29th street-- even closer to my apartment! This is good news for my sweet tooth but bad news for my pants. Looks like the new location will be open very soon-- welcome to the neighborhood, Bakeway NYC!!!
Agree with Anna G.
Nice drinks, wraps, sandwiches, tabouli and other Middle Eastern dishes.
And LOW prices (for a Manhattanite)!
I'm sorry to say this beautiful and clean store has some of the worst cupcakes and baked goods. I love the variety of drinks and everything is well thought out from the decor and product choices. I used to come in for cookies and treats but the last time I had a cupcake there I just couldn't go back. I figure I could make a dozen of my own for that price.
I still haven't tried any of the hot foods because of my experience.
I've just recently returned to bakeway in April for an almond croissant. It was delicious! Maybe things are turning around and I can return. The staff was also very friendly.
This place rocks. The decor in the store is nice. Much better than a lot of the other mom and pop bakeries in Astoria which just feel dirty.
The quality of the baked goods is excellent. I don't think I've had anything there that I haven't liked yet. The cookies are especially good.
Don't be fooled by its newness! There is nothing fabulous about this place except for their espresso beverages. Their pastries taste like they were previously frozen.
I always wander in here at night around 8ish when I need to trade in my blockbuster mail order movies for the newest flick on dvd and everything looks picked over. I can't get the picture of some homeless drunk diabetic bum wandering in here and licking all the cookies and putting them back while nobody's looking. It makes me shudder just thinking about it. There's just something dirty about it. Pay an extra employee to work here and put your damn products in a protected counter like every other bakery! Man, where is the health inspector when I need her?
What a great bakery. Was walking up and down Broadway looking for a place to eat lunch. I'm never in the area so I was aimlessly walking around. Walk by this cool looking bakery and decide to drop in. WOW. Three little help yourself islands filled with great looking baked goods including some savory and not just chocolate this and chocolate that (though, yes, there's still plenty of chocolate to be had). I think it was 6.99 per pound. I ended up getting just under a pound of random cookies, went to eat lunch up the road, then came BACK to get another half pound of assorted pastries!
Luckily a coworker of mine is often nearby and said he'd gladly stop back to pick me up some more double chocolate chip cookies.
five stars for sure on this one.
Yesterday morning, I was in the mood to go out for breakfast. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a cup of coffee and a buttered roll or bagel. Dunkin' Donuts was out of the question---been there, done that, looking to have something else.
I had noticed that Bakeway NYC was open (The place was undergoing construction for the past few months, and as of two weeks ago, had finally opened. I decided to give it a try.
They had a breakfast buffet...3 tables that were laden with mini pastries...The mini pastries were priced at $5.99 a pound and there was also a steam table where one can get a full breakfast of bacon, omelettes, home fries at $5.00 a plate. I opted for the pastries.
There were all kinds of pastries and cookies, baklava, Greek powdered sugar cookies, raspberry cookies, chocolate chip, etc. There were also some mini puff pastries wrapped in phyllo--spinach, cheese, ham and cheese, roast beef.
This buffet is self-service. They supply the plastic containers and you help yourself to the pastries. They have a scale by the register where they weigh your tray.
Seating is available, tables and chairs are in the front of the store, along with a bench that is right outside the storefront. The display case held sumptuous looking cakes and tarts and on the opposite wall there was a refrigerator display that held wraps, sandwiches, salads, sodas, Snapples, containers of milk, hummus, etc.
Getting back to my breakfast--The prices were fabulous. A tray that held 3 small ham and cheese puff pastries, a chocolate chip cookie and 2 raspberry cookies came to a total of 2 dollars and change...I ordered a large coffee to accompany my breakfast and it cost me another dollar. Still, this was easy on the pocket.
I highly recommend this place. I met the manager and he and the rest of the staff are very friendly.
Bakeway is a nice addition to the neighborhood. I'm glad it's around.
The quality is hit-or-miss. They used to have great cupcakes, and then they changed overnight to be the grossest thing to ever have frosting.
Cupcakes aside, the coffee it good, and I like how it's a bakery/deli/market all in one.
Slightly cut above the rest by Astoria standards, the pastries are better than nearby staple - Omonia Cafe. The clean and relaxed decor is definitely a plus but prepared foods are so so (although a good deal). The always pleasant service and it being one of the very very few Starbucks style "pay for your coffee and linger at a table" cafes in the neighborhood keeps me returning at this place.
I was so excited when it first opened because we were missing a decently priced bakery in the neighborhood, but I agree with other critics when they said this place is a hit-or-miss. One day their cupcakes are huge and amazing, and the next day, it's half its size and doesn't taste so great. I also don't trust the buffet -style -pick and choose your-pastries setup they have going on. It doesn't seem very kosher. I don't care if there is a sneeze guard. I've seen flies make homes of those pastries.
ADORABLE! I tried their nutella crepe cake and sealed my fate as a regular customer to this new bakery-eatery on Broadway. The place is so clean & fresh that it made me want to buy out the entire store. I can't wait to go back & try breakfast now. Yay! A new place to spend my money!
Good pastry is back. Coffee is extraordinarily good, best coffee I've ever had in NY.
