San Jose, CA
I knew there HAD to be a good place to grab a torta in ESSJ. Found this place on Yelp and went there on a Friday afternoon. I ordered the milanesa for myself and the cubano for the hubby. Almost all the reviews of this place were on point...
They stack on the meat here! I loved the bits of charred meat that I got. Everything about this sandwich was well-proportioned-- The amount of avocado (which was so creamy and good) mayo, cheese, jalapenos and even down to the sesame seeds on the buns. YUM! I'll be back!! I was definitely not disappointed with my sandwich. I ordered it "to-go" and when I got home, the sandwich was still nice and warm and most importantly, the bread was still toasty.
Make sure you come here hungry cause the portions are huge!! I love that they take credit cards too! -

Bakery Mexico has the best milenesa tortas around. It's more of a panaderia than a taqueria or restaurant. There are a few tables to sit and gets really crowded around lunch time.
I love the chocoflan here it's the bomb
If you're in the area definitely hit this place up. -

Mountain View, CA
Sorry, folks....I need to send some gentle rain on this enthusiastic torta parade proceeding from and drawing attention to Bakery Mexico / Mexico Bakery.....
I am not exactly a torta connossieur. But I am certainly big enough a fan to drive from Shoreline Blvd., Mountain View to Story Rd., San Jose, to try what, based on all the rave Yelp reviews, sounded like the ultimate torta - a cubana, a milanesa, a carne asada, any torta from Mexico Bakery!
First off, the shopping center where Mexico Bakery is located is iffy at best. After parking my car, I was offered windshield wipers in the somewhat awkwardly configured parking lot en español - no ingles. Not a big deal, but not an everyday occurrence for me. I had to squeeze past a decent-sized crowd of people huddled around the entrance to the store next door. Also not the end of the world, but not quite what I was expecting.
The bakery itself, as we entered, set my mind at ease....sort of....as I beheld this wonderland of baked goods displayed all around. That sense of wonder faded the more I looked around. It was certainly nicer inside than it was outside in the surrounding shopping center. The place was packed with people. The seats were hard and somewhat dated. The tables were not necesarily attended to for cleanliness on this busy Sunday afternoon. Nothing horribly wrong per se with any of this. I'm just painting the picture for you.
Communication en ingles with the cashier was slightly challenging at points. But I knew to expect that from other Yelp reviews. She took our orders and didn't botch one iota of what we asked for. Thank, God.
We waited 20 or so minutes for one of several first-come, first-serve tables to open up, and then after another 5-10 minutes of waiting, the moment we were all waiting for came.....our number was called and here come some Bay-Area-renowned tortas.....cubanas in our case!
First reaction - not bad. Not the best. But not bad. The ingredients were fresh enough. No problems there. The bread was fine. But I honestly expected better from a bakery. The overall taste was so-so to me, and here's why.....
1) No sauce! Granted, they never said they woud add any thing special to these impressive tortas. But after having tortas at La Casita Chilanga Redwood City (Middlefield Rd.), my taste buds were missing - even longing for - sauce. Chipotle aioli sauce. Our tortas from Mexico Bakery were noticeably bland by comparison.
2) The bread....Mexico's Bakery's torta bread is freshly made in-house - as far as I know. But I have to admit that I prefer the bread at La Casita Chilanga Redwood City (Middlefield Rd.) which is nicely toasted in a press and slightly sweet - if you can imagine that - and LCC is strictly a torteria - not a bakery / panaderia.
3) The intangibles....I believe there was something missing that I couldn't quite place my finger on. For those of you who have been to That's It Market San Francisco (Mission St) - a liquor store / torteria - you might know what I'm talking about. I'm not sure if Mexico Bakery's tortas are missing ingredients - in terms of what others like That's It Market serve in their tortas - or if it's a proportion thing where Mexico Bakery's tortas have this and that, cheese, avocado, possibly egg, etc.., but you can't really taste it for all the meat that's competing with it. I'm not sure. But I believe something - something! - is missing from Mexico Bakery's tortas.
In conclusion, Mexico Bakery was just okay for me. After all the hype that I fully believed, I was honestly a little disappointed. I enjoyed it because I love food and I'm a torta fan. But it didn't come anywhere close to meeting my expectations, especially after reading all the rave reviews here on Yelp.
I would encourage anyone to try out and even continue visiting Mexico Bakery and enjoying your favorite tortas, trying out new ones, trying out their baked goods, licuados and all that they have to offer, especially if Mexico Bakery is the best option for you so close to home / San Jose.
But I would also encourage a few brave souls out there to venture out one day and try some other torta options that are probably a little bit out of your way - e.g, Savor Mexico, Mountain View (California St.), La Casita Chilanga, Redwood City (Middlefield Rd.), and That's It Market, San Francisco (Mission St.) - especially if you are convinced that Mexico Bakery's tortas are the BEST in the Bay Area.
That's all I'm sayin'.... -

My girlfriend and I wanted to eat some sandwiches, but something a little bit different so we decided to get some tortas in East Side San Jose. No better place to get your Mexican fix within San Jose. My girlfriend got the Salchicha torta and since I was hungry, I ordered the more expensive torta, the Cubana, because I thought it came with more meat. I didn't tell my girlfriend my logic until afterwards when she questioned me if I knew what I was getting. I just thought more money, more meat. She proceeded to laugh at me. What came out was a smorgasbord of different proteins. For under $6, you get the most satisfying and filling torta on this side of the planet. Next time I'm going to get the Salchicha or Chorizo. A big plus is that it's predominantly a bakery, so you can get your Mexican sweet tooth craving satisfied here too.

I am between 2 and three stars. After today, I decided only 2. The size (for the price) is outstanding. Bot a torta with no mayo or lettuce is not ok with me. Stale bread and burnt, yes I said burnt, carne asada makes me wanna take away another star. Not to mention the fact that it tool 45 minutes to get 3 tortas. Granted, there were 4 people in front of us, but c'mon! I could've gone to Mi Pueblo, turned on the grill, sliced the veggie and made a much better one at home.....next time, I will!
Sorry folks, I hate to write a bad review but my 2 previous experiences with you have been similar to this one. -

5 stars ! For the tortas :) man I fell in love ! I wish this place was on the west side of San Jose. It's so far from where I live. I recently bought my birthday cake here, marble with banana & strawberry, the cake was okay, not as moist as I thought it would be. The pan ! Lots of variety, okay price. Parking is not that bad. Will be back when I crave for those tortas !

LOOOOOVVVEEEEE!!!!!!!
I absolutely love their milanesa tortas. I am not Mexican but I love Mexican food. I've tried torta in other places, they either tend to be small, or lack meat, or are overstuffed with beans.
Not this place, the torta is literally the size of a small watermelon and they do not skimp on the meat. They put layers on layers on layers.....did I forget to say layers, of meat. It tastes so good. And if you are lucky, the owner will once in a while come out and give fresh pan dulce(sweet bread), just right out of the oven.....FOR FREE. -

I wonder if this location is related to Mexico Bakery No. 2, because their tortas are equally amazing.
The tortas here are so massive I had trouble eating it without having half the sandwich fall out. They heap on the meat, avacado, tomato, cheese, and onion. The bread is fresh baked and the ingredients freshly cut/cooked.
Not much else to say, you get your money's worth, I easily got a full two meals from one order. One of my top destinations for Tortas! -

Oh those delicious Tortas.. I love them!
Not only they are delicious but BIG, so big you will end up just eating half of it. I think those 5.00ish are so worth it.
The owner is nice, always in a good mood. He usually gives his customers free bolillos (baguettes) and some warm bread! How amazing is that?
The negative?
Parking! it's crazy! But it's not fair to rate them -1 just for parking when they're customer service, their food and bread are amazing! -

Went here for lunch today because I had to try the tortas everyone keeps talking about. I ordered the carne asada torta & the torta cubana & split them with my brother. These tortas didn't disappoint they were delicious! The ingredients were fresh & the freshly baked bread was amazing. If I had too pick one torta it would be the carne asada torta.
Only one lady taking orders. I don't know if that's how it is all the time but she could of used some help today. -

OMG, this place is fu**** awesome! I will go NO OTHER place if I want to get a Torta or Donut. The size of those Tortas got me feeling like I'm in an episode of Man V.S. food lol.. They are huge! Half a torta already fills me up no matter how hungry i come and i can eat! Them crusty dusty creme donuts are off the hook, so soft and just melts in your mouth... Mmmm.. Yeah the lines are long when you come, but well worth the wait =)

Best tortas in town. The place tends to get busy but I've never had a problem with the service. During my last visit I got a delicious Milanesa torta and a selection of donuts while the place was full of people watching a futbol game.

Breaded beef married with vegetables,
Smothered in a blanket of chunky avocado and mayo.
Soft fluffy bread with crispy edges -
Oh torta, you complete me.
While you're waiting for your sandwiches, gaze through the glass for their vast selection of desserts. Great prices, average service, EPIC sandwiches. Had some leftover orange sauce from La Vic's and smothered the s**t out of my sandwich, then inhaled it.

The Torta Milanesa here is INCREIBLE! An epic sandwich with layers of delicious crispy fried steak, plenty of fresh avocados, and lots of other tastiness that I wasn't really aware of since I just devoured the whole thing. The bakery also has an awesome display of sweet goodies. It's a good thing that the ~$6 torta was enough to fill me up, otherwise I probably would have over indulged.
Fun fact: I received my Mexi-Can badge when checking in here. Yay! Wish I could live in the area cause I would definitely become a regular. -

-1 parking is a hassle.
-1 bzzz do not know how to form a line. They need some type of system.
-1 cuz my bread wasnt that great.
If your not picky and ready to bump people, the bread and tortas are decent. The price is also good by comparison to an actual taqueria. The owner always walks around giving out bread (I guess to keep you in the long line) -

The sandwiches here are BOMB! Remember to ask if they can add a fried egg in it. It makes the sandwich rich and oowy goowy yummy.

I was craving beef.. badly.
My boyfriend and I sat through an hour and a half of traffic just so we could try the tortas from Bakery Mexico. The whole car ride I was thinking to myself "this better be worth it.." lol. We arrived at around 5:30pm and there were plenty of parking spots available. The store is clean, organized, and smelled SO good. They had racks on racks on racks of bread and colorful pastries displayed thoughout the whole store.
Me being the picky person I am, probably bothered the man who took our orders. He deserves 5 stars alone because he tried his best to explain what each Torta was. My favorite was when he tried to explain what a 'Vampiro' was to us which he acted out as a vampire. Lol cute! I ended up getting a Torta Azada (beef) and my boyfriend got the Torta Milanesa (breaded beef). Each torta came with avacado, mayo, chile sauce, onions, and cheese. It took less than 5 minutes for both of our orders!
The tortas were amazing! Seriously, if you've tried Sol Food's (San Rafael) bistec sandwich and want a cheaper and better tasting alternative.. this is it! For under $6 you get this huge flavorful torta enough to share between two people. My boyfriend and I also ordered naranjas which is basically fresh squeezed orange juice. The naranjas were a little bit pricy at almost $4, but it was very good. I wish they put ice in it.. oh well!
Ah Bakery Mexico.. please open up a store closer to Daly City! -

My go-to torta place from now on :)
I finally remembered to stop by this little bakery to try out the tortas everybody on Yelp is raving about. Andddddd, they really do live up to their hype!
I had the Torta Cubana which consists of hot dog, ham, egg, ground beef(I think), avocado, tomato, jalapenos, and I feel like I'm forgetting something else too. But anyways, it was delicious! All of the different types of meats went beautifully together and the egg was a nice touch too. I LOVE EGGS!!! My past experiences with tortas were not that good due to really chewy bread but the bread here was easy on my mouth(that's what she said) and it had a nice crunch from being lightly toasted.
My buddy ordered the Torta Asada so we traded half. The bread was equally as good but the cuts of asada were really chewy and didn't have that great grilled flavor that I like. I didn't enjoy the asada at all but the cubana was cubomba(ehhhhhhh get it?! get it?!)
I've also bought a tres leches cake from here once and it was sooooooo goooooood. If you've never had tres leches, I suggest you try it out.
There is some seating but maybe enough for only 20ish people. The tables in the back are cool but if you sit in the ones up front, the people in line are standing right there staring at you while you devour your torta.

I LIKE TORTAS TORTAS!
We had the milanesa torta which is basically a huge sandwich stuffed with cheese, meat, jalapeno, avocado, and I forgot what else. IT IS HUGE. It tastes like a burger but with more authentic insides, and the bread is SooOOoo soft while maintaining a crunchy exterior *drool*. The only thing I'd add is maybe some dipping sauce (like with paninis?) because it can get a bit dry after the first few bites.
Definitely a must try. -

Ive heard so many great reviews about thier tortas, I had to try.
As you walk in the delightful aroma of baked bread brings your stomach to a roar! The line was a bit long but moved quickly. One of the bakers came out and passed out full warm fresh samples of rolls. I coudnt resist the urge and it was truly satisfying. It was warm, buttery and airry!
I ordered the Torta Milanesa and Horchata. Waited about 8-10 minutes before recieving my order. I sat at the table a good 10 seconds adimring what was to become of this sandwhich. Wow, it is GOOD! The roll was baked fresh, buttery and airry, warmly wrapped around a perfect amount of breaded carne asada, avacado, jalapeno, tomatos, onions and cheese. I topped it off with some extra Taptio and went to work. Every bite was gratifying! The carne asada was cooked perfect, no chewiness and the vegtables were fresh. The sandwhich is quite big so unless you have a very empty appetite or dont overinduldge you can share half with someone else. The price is very reasonable also, $6 cant complain.
As long as its not crowded theres plenty of seating but good luck.
I also enjoyed much if thier pastries however, by far they serve the best Tortas in the Bay Area! -

I love this place. Thank you Yelp for this suggestion. This is now my go to spot for some great food in San Jose. This place is a hidden gem.
The tortas are MASSIVE and cheap. $5.50 for a huge Torta is an amazing deal.
I usually come here for lunch and only able to eat half and eat the other half for dinner, which really is impressive because I eat a lot.
I get the Carne Asada Torta, which comes with fresh avacado, jalapeno, tomatos, onions and cheese. Amazingly good. Carne Asada is juicy. MMMM.
This is the best hidden spot in San Jose. Cheap, Amazing Food. What's not to love?? 5 stars for this place. Try it!!!!! -
Review from Mike T.
San Jose, CA
I was assisted as soon as I stepped into the establishment and up to the cash register. I asked what was most popular on their menu and received a thorough questioning into the type of foods I enjoy. The server made suggestions according to my responses, describing each item in knowing detail. In the end I found myself holding an azada & lomo torta ... and some pastries ... lol. The quantity you get for the price is good - above average. The quality of what you get for your money is what puts it above average.
Hot off the grill, the jalapeños were a pleasant surprise. Just enough spice in them to give the torta a bite to it. The torta was juicy, but not overly saturated. The avocado, fresh and buttery. The meats were flavorful and broke down in my mouth nicely. As slow an eater as I am, the bread never got soggy, but it wasn't tough to start with.
Overall, I was greeted well and served food I would eat again. If you haven't tried it, I would highly suggest it. Four stars for a place I would eat at regularly! -

I was excited to try this place because of all the great reviews but, the tortas just didn't impress me. Maybe it was an off day or I should've came earlier in the day? I don't know. We ordered the asada, milanesa, and cubana. Yes, they were big but, they didn't look anything like the pictures I seen posted on here. There definitely wasn't "piles" of meat in my milanesa. I had two paper thin pieces. It was like they were running out and hella skimped on mine (we came around 7:30). I could hardly taste the meat when i ate the torta as a whole. My sister got the asada. She liked hers enough but, there was barely any meat in hers as well. I also didn't think the asada was very flavorful. My bf thought the cubana was just OK. He didn't really like the cheap hotdog. He just finished it off b/c he was hungry.
I was really disappointed. We were only in San Jose for the night and picked this place to eat at solely due to the reviews. I thought for sure it was going to be good... Great reviews, the place was packed..long lines. Either it was bad timing or they're just not my thing. :/ -

Stopped by today around 2pm. The place was busy, line was long. It took 30 minutes from the time I walked in the door till I got my torta. I ordered the asada torta and as others have described, it was huge! Somehow I managed to eat it all. Yes, it was delicious. It came with meat, avocado, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, mexican cheese and mayo.
The pan dulce and cakes all looked delicious. I picked a few cookies, fruit tart, and an enpanada. Yummy!
I didn't notice if they took credit cards, but I figured cash only cus most small bakeries are that way. -

I found this place through Yelp and can say the reviewers are dead on. My asada torta was huge and less than $6. The bread was fresh and piled with tasty grilled beef, avocado, etc.
I didn't get any of their sweets but they all looked delicious. The doughnuts were huge.
I would definitely recommend this place for the food and value. -

This review is for their tortas only.
I ordered a milanesa torta about two weeks ago. It was everything that I expected based on the majority of these Yelp reviews. Delicious, quite frankly, is an underestatement. Their torta sizes are also quite big, so I had half for lunch and part of the other half for dinner. My husband ate the rest a few hours after it was made and he also agreed that it was one of the best tortas he has ever had. I definitely recommend this place for authentic Mexican tortas! -

San Jose, CA
This is an epic East Side eatery. Everything from their tortas to their licuados are amazing. This spot defines tortas and my favorite is definitely the torta milenesa which is kind of like a fried piece of pork meat. They hella hook it up with avocado and jalapenos, which is awesome. As for the pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread), cakes, and donuts they are beyond amazing. The licuados (Mexican type smoothie drink with milk and fruit) are also too delicious for words. I always get the banana and strawberry licuado, which is so tasty and freshly prepared. Overall, if you're in the East Side definitely stop by here.

The tortas... the tortas... the. Tortas.
Ok, so I haven't had anything that was baked here, even though it's a bakery. But hot damn! The tortas! From what I've heard, the tortas used to be $5 flat, but now they've raised it to $5-something. It's cool. They're worth it! In my opinion, you should get the carne asada torta. Layers of carne asada, jalapeño chopped up into the spread, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado. It's seriously one of the best tortas I've ever had.
The great thing about the tortas is that half a torta can fill you up. Serio! So it's practically like you're buying 2 meals if you buy a torta for lunch. Que bueno. -

I just went today with my cousin to get a delicious torta! All the workers were pretty fast. Only downside is that we wanted to buy some bread, and stood in front of the counter for about five minutes and no one was helping us, when I asked a worker if anyone could help us they said we had to stand in line. It was a loooong line. So we just left. They should have a separate line for the food and for bread. Or at least a sign that says you HAVE to stand in line if you're planning on buying bread. Blah. All that stuff looked really yummy too :/

Yes, the location is questionable - but don't let that deter you away! The staff here is some of the nicest and friendliest people you'll ever meet.
I have heard many great things about Mexico Bakery and finally trekked out there to give it a try. I went with the Torta Asada without mayo or cheese. It includes juicy carne asada, fresh slices of avocado, pickled jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. OMG, can this torta asada be any bigger?! They are super generous on the meat. It's definitely enough to comfortable share with two people, forreals! I was only able to devour half and was forced to take the remaining half in a doggy bag. The sesame torta was warm, fresh, toasty and had a subtle sweet flavor - try to eat there as taking it to go may leave you with a soggy torta. The ingredients by themselves are so simple, yet somehow works together so perfectly.
One of the best $5.75 you'll ever spend - trust me. -

This review is for the bakery only.
My husband and I had two slices of tres leches cake, a rasberry pastry, and a cinnamon bun donut. We have definitely had better. The tres leches cake was very dry and was mostly frosting and pastry cream and little cake. The cake was so dry, my husband thought it was regular vanilla cake. The cream, which tasted like vanilla pudding, was piled on and overpowered the cake. Also, the preserved strawberry on top of the cake still had the stem and green leafy part attached, which makes me believe the strawberries are not washed or are at least not prepared correctly. The pastry and the donut were okay, but nothing that you can't find at your local mexican grocery store like Chavez or Mi Pueblo. In fact, Mi Pueblo's tres leches cake is 10 times better than this cake.
The best tres leches and bakery is still, hands-down, the Pink Elephant, which is down the street on King, a couple of blocks north of Story.
We might have to go back and try the tortas now that El Gallo Giro is gone. -
Review from Andrea T.
I must say I am quite disappointed after eating here after all the good reviews I've read about this place. It was my first time eating a torta, so I got the torta cubana and some pastries and a chocolate flan. The torta was huge and packed with helllla meat, maybe too much for me. And I thought it tasted alright. On to eating my 2nd half, I noticed a small gray thing in my sandwich, between the chorizo. I took it out and it was a small rock the size of a pea. I was then totally disgusted and threw the rest away. The chocolate flan was huge as well, the flan part was smooth and creamy and the chocolate part was nice and moist. I spent about $12, which is not bad. Overall, the torta was good until I saw the rock in there but I would still probably come back and try the carne asada one instead but not for awhile.
