I have yet to try their drinks and desserts but both the milanesa and azada torta's were amazing! $5.75 for a torta that's basically enough to feed you through two straight meals...yeah, okay. I can dig it.
Also, if it's not a chilly day out there's this little spot just outside and to the right of the front door that has a couple tables and seats to eat. It's nice! -

Tried a torta for the first time the other day. I didn't really know what to expect but I ordered a milanese torta (I think thats what it was called?)
I ended up with a sammich that was bigger than my face. Score! Super worth it.
Would have made for two to two and a half meals for me, but I fed the other half to a starving friend who was eyeing it because it looked and tasted amazing.
Was completely stuffed after finishing a half of it. No regrets. -

Not for the faint of heart.
I've had their cheese tortas, quesadilla's, tamales, sweet bread, and mexican coffee. I'll review each one.
Their tortas are almost as good as the one's in Mexico City - very yummy but every time I've had one the very next day I feel nauseous.
Quesadilla- I think it's awesome that they use Mexican cheese but it is sooo greasy that it is hard to finish.
Tamales- Really good! but I found a little bug cooked into the masa so I haven't eaten another one since then.
Sweet bread- It's ok but a great bargin, you can get a lot of sweet stuff for very cheap, you just have to ignore the flys.
Mexican coffee (coffee with cinnamon)- Yucky, it tasted like the cannister that holds the coffee and cinnamon hasn't been washed in a long time. -

I review based on getting the best bang for your buck (since I am a college student) and this is probably one of the most delicious sandwiches I've had.
Get the milanesa, breaded steak torta.... the avocado, cheese, tomatoes, mayo, jalapenos and the crispy bread. I will miss this sandwich when I graduate.
They take card, which is very rare for such cheap establishments (minimum $5). $6 dollars for a torta and you can eat one half and save one for later, (or wolf down the whole thing like I did because it is beyond delicious!) Don't forget to ask for the red salsa. Upgrades an already amazing sandwich. -

This place should have 5 stars. The best tortas, tacos ($1 ea) & burritos in SJ. Here's a little secret to yu mofo's.....call to pre-order and your food will be ready in 10 mins. I'm Vietnamese but could eat at this place everyday. The staff is super friendly too : )

I was searching on Yelp for some new places to try, and I came across this place. After seeing the pictures of their Tortas I knew I had to try this place out. We went on a weekday around 7:30PM, and there was a big line. Good sign.
They have tons and tons of bakery items, and lots of people were walking out with a huge box full. We split two of their tortas: azada and milanesa. You get meat, jalapenos, cheese, avocado, tomato and onions. For a little over $5, you get a HUGE torta. We also had the chocolate cake flan and a donut, which were awesome too.
I will definitely be going back! -

Tortas, and flan, and pan! Oh, my!
I found this place by a lucky accident - driving around downtown looking for parking and there was a metered spot right in front. I was supposed to meet up for froyo but after quickly looking up Mexico Bakery on Yelp and seeing the ratings and mass torta reviews - this hole-in-the-wall intrigued my ravenous stomach and we skipped the froyo to try it instead.
Inside there was a handful of small tables. You order, pay, and they bring the food to your table. Service is friendly and efficient. There's a TV playing soccer in the corner near the door.
The generous sized torta consisted of two large oblong hamburger-like buns with sesame seeds on top and sandwiched around deliciously seasoned juicy and tender patties of meat (I had pollo) plus sliced jalapenos, cheese, tomatoes, onions, and generous chunks of avocado. It smelled great and tasted even better. How the heck have I never tried a torta in all my years living in San Jose?!? I loved it so much I went again the next day, then a third time two days later and also introduced the place to my brother (he loved their torta cubana). Five stars but docking one because on my third visit, instead of the tender and juicy pollo patties there was dry-ish shredded pollo in my torta. It didn't taste moist and fresh like the other two I had. This was on a Saturday afternoon. The second and third times I also tried their flan and licuado. The flan tasted extra smooth and creamy almost like a pudding. Not my preference in consistency but the flavor was still quite tasty. And the creamy strawberry licuado made with real fruit chunks was delicious and filling especially paired with the torta and flan.
They also have two windows full of different baked goods which I haven't tried but have my eye on one which looks like pound cake for my next visit. I will definitely be back again and again. -

We found this place after trying to eat at another establishment in the area. We found out that place was closed and decided to try this place out. Kind of a little funky hole in the wall, but the food was uber tasty.
The cashier was super nice and explained to us some of their most popular dishes. We all decided on tortas. Before this experience, I really liked tortas. But after having theirs, I think I might be spoiled forever on tortas. They're so good!
I ordered Hawaiiana which contained some of the yummiest honeyed ham I've had. The pineapple was fresh, though not the sweetest I've had... I think that went pretty well with the flavors in the sandwich though. The bread was toasted just right, and tasted homebaked. My nephew got the Milanesa which was the breaded steak and my b/f got the Cubana which was like a combo of a bunch of meats. I had a bite of the Milanesa... The steak was super good.
They have some very interesting drinks at this place. My b/f got the tamarind soda which he liked. I got a champagne soda (non-alcoholic) which was sweet and had some kinda of fruit flavors added. The Inca Cola tasted like bubble gum with citrus flavor added.
One of the drinks I would recommend staying away from is something called India Malt. My nephew got that and thought it tasted a bit like soy sauce. I didn't find it to be THAT salty, but it tasted a bit musky. Like a hobo took his sweat towel and rung it into the bottle. But if you're into that kind of funk, by all means go for it! -

i live 2 blocks away and walked by a million times but i always thought it was just baked goods until i saw it on yelp a few weeks ago. we got one pollo torta and one milanesa torta. they were huge and so delicious. the cashier was really nice, and the lady who made our sandwiches is the sh*t because they were so good.
we'll be back, probably a lot! thanks! -
Review from Kelly S.
I haven't found a Torta anywhere else that compares to this bakery! As some have said, the first location is a tad better than this one, but it's still a bargain at $5.75 for a huge sandwich that will leave you wondering how you managed to finish it in one sitting. With that said, I really can't complain!
We had the ever so popular Milanesa along with the Hawaiian Torta. Both were great, but the Milanesa still came out on top because of the simple, yet savory flavors. We tried the Hawaiian per recommendation of the employee and I won't neglect to mention that it was a good choice! I never thought that ham, chicken, avocado and pineapple would be so tasty in a sandwich! Sweet and salty. Mmmmm!
Parking's a real pain in the butt because it's all metered, but if you don't have coins and are looking for a spot, there's a credit card meter just two streets down on 5th, i believe. (Look for the huge solar panels.)
If you're a baller on a budget, this is your spot! -

I've only had one thing, and quite frankly it's all I need. Pollo Torta. Every time. the sandwich ranges from big to enormous depending on the day, and they're never stingy with the ingredients, including a heaping helping of fresh avocado. It's nothing fancy, and occasionally the roll has been a little stale, but that's why it's 4 stars and not 5.
I can't speak to any of their other items or baked goods, but I'll be returning again and again for the pollo torta. -

I've never had a torta before so I couldn't compare it to another place. I got a steak torta and it resembled a large and flat burger. At least that's how I would describe it as. Unwrapping the foil from the torta, the aroma was really great. Taking my first bite, I really got that "mexican food" vibe from it. I took the torta apart and I found that it was the pickled jalapeno peppers that made it perfect. Normally jalapeno peppers are too spicy for me to handle, but these weren't super spicy and the flavor of them was just too great not to eat them.
As for the restaurant itself, it was a normal compact space. They had a lot of baked goods in front, but I couldn't find any price labels on them. They weren't exactly quick to bring out my order, but it was in a timely manner. -

Like I said about the location on Story Road. This place has the biggest and tastiest tortas. Not much I can add to the already great reviews for this place, but there are a few things to note:
- They make tacos here. The story road location does not.
- Not as big as story road. Can get tight insider with people eating at the tables that are so close to the counter.
- smaller selection of pastries and no cakes. -

This location serves better fresher tortas than Story and King one and that is saying something.
I got Loma and my husband got Milanese. They were both enormous and so amazingly flavorful and $5.75 each. The combination of ingredients is where its at, they don't taste as good separately as in the torta together.
Also, they had a little outside table so we were able to have our dog with us. -

I don't know what kind of torta I split with my friend at 2 in morning, but I know it was delicious.
First time I've tried a torta, and it won't be the last.
Oh and this place had an amazing display of pastries/desserts too. Like, wow. -
Review from Peggy S.
I felt violated by the tortas... My mind said no but my body said YES! All while I was thinking, "No! A bite is two more miles on the treadmill!", my body kept telling me, "Yes, FEED ME! Keep putting this flavorful, delicious food into the mouth. NOW!"
When I first walked into this dimly lit eatery, I was intimidated by the huge glass case with a large selection of Mexican sweets. This alone was my weakness... I wanted the sugar-coated cookies, I wanted the colorful pan, I wanted the spongy cake slices, I wanted the twisty puff pastries... and they were all super cheap! So upon the first visit, I stuffed my face with the tri-color cookies and my coworkers thought I was snorting coke from the white substance covering my face. Cookies are my coke, OK?!
I decided to return the next day and try their tortas for lunch. Having to wait 24 hours before my second visit was torturous... I couldn't stop thinking about the tortas and the cookies for a full 24 hours!
I got the milanesa torta (breaded steak). Oh. My. Gosh. Bomb diggity, fo realz. The warm, soft buns (kind of like burger buns with sesame seeds on top) gently hugged the layers of light mayonnaise, tomatoes, spicy jalapenos, queso fresco (so good!), onions, fresh avocado, and that perfectly seasoned breaded steak in between... the friendly staff even gave us chili on the side for that added kick!
The tortas were HUGE, but even though I was full to the brim after finishing the first half, I couldn't resist reaching for the second half. Greed really is one of the worst sins... Oh and gluttony...
I literally felt like dying after consuming the torta... but I still have two cookies left! Yeah. I finished those too. All in one sitting. So... yeah. I don't really think I need to say more about how awesome this place is. It's been 6 hours since lunch, and I am STILL FULL.
Let me just say one last thing - superb service. Really friendly and patient staff, big smiles, and you can call in your orders ahead of time!Listed in: Downtown San Jose

Went here last night after a football game with a healthy appetite. A friend recommended this place from other friends that have recommended it to him. It seems like this place only gets publicity from hear-say.
After living in downtown San Jose for the larger part of the last 7 years I thought I'd be more aware of a place like this, but it's really a hole in the wall operation. Only problem I would say is trying to find parking nearby, luckily we came at night and the meters weren't a problem.
I ordered what the rest of the Yelper's suggested, "Milanese Torta" with everything, not knowing what "everything" even meant. The meat is fried on the grill and comes with avocado, jalepenos, a little mayo and a ton of meat. It's a generous portion and will fill up most. Saved the other half for lunch the next day.
Best part of this place was the price. $5.75 for the Milanese Torta.
Low parts were the parking situation (not their fault of course) and they don't have a great selection of drinks.
This place was so good that I had to tell Yelp and other friends to hit this place up the next time we're hungry. I don't Yelp often, so when I do, it's for giving credit where credit is due. -

After reading all the rave reviews about the Tortas here, I decided to go during lunch. Boy was that a stroke of genius, the tortas here are one of the best I've had.
The meat (I got beef tongue) was tender and chewy and went perfectly with the tomatoe, avacado, and lettuce among other ingredients. They didn't slather the mayo on which was a plus.
The best part about the sandwich was the bread, which was freshly baked and had a sweet tang to it.
For just $5.75 I was stuffed, these tortas are decievingly filling. -

Great drunk food! Conveniently located right across the street from Dive Bar and right next to the old Mission Ale House now Frankie J's??
Anywho, we got a Milanesa torta to share and the bread was nicely toasted and the sandwich itself was nice and hot and very filling. Love the textural crunch of the onions with the tender meat, gooey cheese, and soft on in the inside, but toasted bread.
I remember coming here back in the days and running into this bakery to buy their smiley face cookies. And yes, they still have them now. Score! -

OK! My review is totally skewed because I often come here after 2am and I am usually not my usual day self, ah-hem. But anyways, I know this is the joint for the bestest and biggest tortas, but I just LOVE their al pastor tacos!!!! My only beef, no wait pork?, is that they usually dont come with a slice of lemon.
A little cool sidenote, they have a bathroom in the back, and you can watch them cook while waiting. Also, seating is limited due to the whole in the wall sized space, but other than that, anyone can enjoy their meaty midnight cravings.
As for their pastries, I had the mexican style cannoli, it cost like 50 cents, but the bread was hard and stale, and the white cream had a play dough consistency. So I might stay away from the pastries if I were you because it didn't work out for me.
So, if you are on the North side of campus and you are craving Mexican, but are burrito-ed out, come to Bakery Mexico 2, and they will hook you up!Listed in: The Santa Clara in San Jose, Mexican food

My friends and I used to come here all the time whenever we were partying in downtown. Let me just say that the reviews you've been reading here are absolutely true...Bakery Mexico has some of the BEST tortas EVER.
I've had my share of tortas from other restaurants, however I always find myself feening for the ones sold here. All of the ingredients are always fresh and the portions are VERY generous. I prefer to pick up either the milanesa or carne asada torta with everything on it. Funny thing is, I'm not the biggest fan of avocadoes...yet there's HUGE slices of em in these tortas, and I LOVE em!
When I'm not in the mood for their torta, I'll instead pick up one of their enchilada plates, which is equally awesome.
For a bakery, these guys definitely have some of the best lunch/dinner offerings around. And the prices are spot on too...I'll typically spend less than 10 bucks here for a torta and one of their awesome pastries/cakes. Speaking of which, if you have a chance, try out their pound cake (with chocolate topping)...it is THE BEST!! -
Review from Cindy W.
Didn't live up to it's huge hype.
Torta was big but the asada wasn't flavorful and the sliced tomatoes didn't look fresh
Bf's bread-butter-sugar thingy's bread was dry and chalky
Tres leches was super moist but tasted a lot like yellow box caked mix
Staff & service were awesome though -

Great torta sandwiches here in downtown SJ. They're $5 and filling. I've had the cubana and the milanesa. I preferred the cubana as the mixture of meats, queso, and egg had more flavor than the milanesa.
There are only a few tables and a window facing counter if you're planning to eat in. Only non-alcoholic beverages are available
We also picked up a few pastels. Although it was a Friday evening they were fresh and tasty.
If you're not downtown Santa Clara St. phobic, give them a try. You'll get a great sandwich at a cheap price. I haven't tried the Story Rd location, but that's my next destination.
Think global, support local. -
Review from Alan W.
Ordered the Milanesa Torta. It was very average though.
Aesthetics - Simple, but looked appetizing
Texture - Breaded steak had a very good, crunchy texture
Flavor - Did not carry its weight. The avocado and the other fixings were fine, but the star of the show, the steak was barely noticeable (outside of the crunch). Needs more seasoning.
For the value, I wouldn't mind coming back again (or going to the Story Rd. location) to give it another shot. I probably won't get the Milanesa again, I think I'd try the one with EVERYTHING in it instead. As for the best tortas ever, I've had much better elsewhere so that was disappointing on that front. -
Review from Bobby l.
Having been to the original location on Story, this place is lack luster in comparison.
While all the ingredients were there, they seem to pack less meat into the sandwich and the baked goods weren't as fresh (though I cant blame them since this location is alot smaller).
Prices are still good, and make a great nearby lunch option for those that work in downtown.
For tortas, I still recommend the milanesa, and pass on the cubana. Go to the better Story location and you won't be disappointed! -

Ordered the carne asada torta, which came out massive and dirt cheap as advertised. The bread had a nice crisp, the avocados were creamy and plentiful, the veggies were surprisingly fresh. Unfortunately, the meat was very tough and not that tasty and dampened an otherwise commendable sandwich.
The array of desserts were tantalizing - tried the pan de dulce (had a nice outside crunch) and the sponge cake, both of which were fresher than what I've grown accustomed to from Mexican bakeries. Also spotted some seasonal Halloween cookies.
Place is a definite hole-in-the-wall, but the food gets served quick and made to order. -

The tortas are by far the best I've ever had! Even in Mexico! lol
We ordered our wedding cake here, and I have to say for the price, (it was about $400 cheaper than the other bakeries we looked into) it was great!! They did, however forget the sugar flowers I requested but the cake was very pretty, fed more than expected, and it was delicious. Thank you, Bakery Mexico. -

I'd only ever eaten one other torta. It was from a taco truck. Unwrapping the foil revealed a leaky, disappointing mess of fatty meat and greasy, nasty, soaked bread. I wondered if all torta were that gross.
Bakery Mexico No. 2 however was an epiphany.
Taking a tip from fellow Yelpers I opted for Torta Milanesa. I was clueless what to expect - my expectations were low but my hopes high. Was it worth braving the Tour de California crowds and torrential rain for this torta?
Hallelujah hells yeah it was!
The only thing soggy about this lunch were my rain drenched pants and my weepy eyes at its deliciousness.
A firm yet pillowy bun, of gigantore proportions, gently cradled a perfect ensemble of beef, jalapños, tomatoes and lettuce. The beef more resembled gyro beef, sizzled and slightly fried in its own fat. Yeah you know it baby, my tastee torta was rolling with fancy beef confit. The balance of flavor, meat, fat, acid, mayo and bread was perfect.
My only problem was my gringo stomach could only accommodate half of that whopper. Plus I had to save room to devour a ridunculously fantastic slice of coconut-dusted jelly roll cake.
On my Caltrain ride back to The City tears streaked down my cheek mimicking rain drizzling the window. They were tears of joy for that single, gorgeous ray of beefy sunshine warming my tummy, nay - heart, at lunch.
But they were also tears of sadness that this dumbass had left the other half in the fridge back in San Jose :( -

I walk in and notice everyone in this place is Latino and speaking Spanish. It passed my litmus test for ethnic restaurants, which is to just look around and see if the patrons match the type of food served.
Anyway, this tiny joint has the best tortas I have ever tasted. I have tried the chicken tortas, as well as the Cubana torta. The former is filled with grilled chicken and the latter has sausages and ham. Both are filled with fresh avocado slices, mayonnaise, an egg, tomatoes, onions, and lettuce.
It is too much for one person to eat the entire thing and if they do, they are disgusting. I believe they charge you $5.50 for one torta. Two people could eat well for under $3 each.
They also have some of the best tacos in town that are made fresh to order. You only have the option of grilled chicken or carne asada. But either choice is stellar. Each taco is around $2 and is filled with quality meats, a fresh slice of avocado, and beans. You have a choice of red or green salsa on the side.
So if you want high quality meats and real avocado come here. If you want poor quality meats, guacamole from a can, and a bad case of "mud butt," then please feel free to go to La Victoria.
Anyway, this is a great, cheap option for lunch or dinner in San Jose. And they also have Mexican sweet bread if you want dessert. It's no Psycho Donuts, but hey, nothing is.
Oh yeah, friendly service with a smile that speaks English and Spanish.

I definitely liked Bakery Mexico the original location on Story Rd a lot better than this particular location because for one, it's much smaller as expected. The bakery section is more or less non-existent and the baked goods aren't as good since they're not as fresh out of the oven. They also don't give you free samples while you stand around and wait which I've been accustomed to at the original location.
They do make tortas here, which is what some people come for, but I decided to go with the cubano instead of pollo since I didn't see it on the menu and wanted to try something new. I do hope they have chicken because I thought their chicken was delicious ... regardless. The Cubano was disappointing, overcooked, too chewy, and really not well flavored like other cubano sandwiches I've had not in tortas. I was definitely overall disappointed by my experience and having used a lot of hot sauce to cover up the flavorless cubano sandwich. The pastries were disappointing as they were more stale and not as good.
I will have to revisit the original location. If this is your first visit I recommend the original over Bakery Mexico No. 2 -
Review from Daniel G.
This was one of the best tortas that i've ever eaten. The bread was amazing, buttery and crispy, not at all soggy. Meat had great flavor, and the thin slice of queso fresco complimented the sandwhich superbly. We ordered 2 milanesa tortas and a couple of little treats to go with them for afterwards.
I took a real Mexican from Mexico here, and she told me I had to give it a 5 star rating, nothing less. i would have anyways, but there it is. -

My Opinion/Story:
hmmm.. tortas... so big and so good!!! I was a virgin to tortas until my husband took me to this place and forced me to eat one of their sandwiches. Maybe it was hungry that lead me to try it. He got us the Hawaiiana Tortas and that thing was huge. Thank goodness they half it or else I wouldn't know how to eat it. It was the best! They pack that thing with loads of meat. One thing I love about Mexican food is they know their meat and know how to make it so good. It's a bakery so you know they make their own bread. The bread is fresh and good. Not too thick but just right. Next time I come here, I'll definitely try a different one. The place is small.. probably allows about a dozen people dining inside. Service is good. Our sandwiches came quick. I only wish they had aqua fresca which would make my meal absolutely perfect!!! -

Went for a cheap & quick dinner at Mexico Bakery on E. Santa Clara St. It's across the street from Muchos.
We got a Pierna Torta - which is smoked ham. Two people can share a sandwich - they are HUGE. Suppose to have avocado but they ran out. How can you run out of avocado at 6pm? Strange. They put tomato, onion, cheese, mayo, and some ham. Very small amount of meat & pretty salty. $5.50. I thought it was ok.
Mango Licuado $3ea - mango shake was pretty good. It was huge, but we both got one & finished them.
Cookies I picked for later were .75c ea. and I thought they were going to be crunchy, but they were big & soft w/ some raspberry jam inside. Just meh to me.
They take credit cards. One unisex bathroom through the kitchen in the very back.Listed in: Downtown San Jose

The cheese torta with beans is AMAZING. Staff is friendly. The pan de dulce is pretty good. Although flys do get in the shelf and hang on the bread... so far i have not gotten the trots from this place, & that's a really good thing for a place like this one. It's close to a hole on the wall.

Walked in to this itty bitty place and knew that I wanted a torta. Got the torta Cubana to share with the honey and it was way too much food. I could feel my heartbeat slow down as the grease from the chorizo and eggs, hotdog, and cheese went down my esophagus. This is a filling meal.
Also tried their licuado de banano. They can make it with chocomil too, which is chocolate milk for you non-chocomil understanding folk.
They also have a selection of pan dulce and some other pastries. Mmmmmm. They also have coffee and canela available. Canela is cinnamon tea for you non-canela understanding folk.
Order at the counter and they bring it to your table. They will cut the torta in half and bring you another plate if you are sharing too.
