Review from Lauren C.
I've been spoiled with fresh baked bread from Bakery Manoa for too long. I turn my nose up at grocery store bread because frankly, it is just not the same.
Along with their sandwich bread, I love their melon pans. I grew up eating melon pans from St. Germain bakery in Shirokiya and sadly they no longer taste as good as they used to. I love popping my melon pans in the toaster oven to brown the sugared top a bit while the inside stays soft and fluffy.
Some of my favorite pastries from Bakery Manoa are:
Dinner rolls- pricey, but totally worth it
French toast- a slightly sweetened wedge of crustless soft bread with a powdered sugar finish
Milky Stick- A soft bread stick with a buttery sugar filling.
Hint- Go early because everything runs out pretty early...I think you can give them a call to have them hold pastries or breads for you though. -

Okay, hours are off BUT the taste makes up for it!
I love the bacon epi and hot dog pastry. It's not your typical hot dog in a bun, I'm not sure what kind of hot dog it is, but the taste is awesome, baked with a swirl of ketcup and mustard, causing it to caramelize... yum!!!
Would have given 5 stars but since they're open only 4 of the 7 days, I had to take away some stars, yeah, I know...they need days off too..lol! -

I have been living in Manoa for several years and noticed this quaint like shop in the Manoa Shopping Center but never did visit it. I guess the reason was whenever I peaked through their store front window, there was not much of anything left for sale. Last month, I finally took that first step and entered the bakery and bought some pastries. I am not a pastry fanatic but when I shared the goodies with my wife, we both fell in love with this place.

Bakery is okay. Nothing special that sticks out. You can find the same type things at St. Germains.
When their're open, only cash is accepted, no plastic. For me, I am trying to get away from handling dirty paper money and lugging coins in my pockets all over the place.
What gets me is that the owners will close the bakery and go on vacation at odd times FOR WEEKS ON END, multiple times a year.
There is a rumor though that the employees get half pay during this time. -

I'm so glad this place hasn't changed. Sure, there's the ever-fancy Fendu Boulangerie right around the corner, but why would I get a $5 cup of mousse when I can get fresh, yummy sweets for under $2 a pop here?
I've always liked this bakery and am glad to stop by when I make the trip to Manoa. If you want something that's tasty, but won't give you a cavity, I suggest the french toast. -

A very cute Japanese style bakery in the Manoa Marketplace, I don't know why I haven't reviewed this place yet!
Their pastries are very light and tasty, and they do have some savory treats. I just tried the "Butterscotch" today and it was so sweet and delicious!
The girls at the front are very friendly and the owners (a husband and wife) are also very friendly! You can see them through the glass window working together making all of their scrumptious goodies!!
The only reason why I'm not giving them the full 5 stars is because some of their goods are not all ready first thing in the morning. I mean; when I'm looking forward to having a sweet treat before work, I want it right then and there!! -

Ok yelpies, when the chef of the "' BEST RESTAURANT IN HAWAII " SUSHI IZAKAYA GAKU gives you a loaf of bread to try and says it's as good as it gets, i'm gonna take his word for it. And all it took was one bite of that English Bread that Chef Hideki gave us and i was convinced this bread was just unbelievably delicious. It has the texture and consistency that you would have at those Coffee Shops in Japan or when you are grabbing a quick bite to eat at the Subway Stations in Osaka Japan. It was that good.
I know you are thinking, well it's just bread but you just don't get that kind of bread here in Hawaii. We always go to Watanabe Bakery and get their bread as well, but at Bakery Manoa, they definitely got me hooked. And all it took was one step into the bakery and see who the masterminds were who makes such wonderful bread and Lo and Behold through that clear glass that you can see as you enter is a Japanese Husband and Wife who are making these remarkable pastries and loaves of bread. Now i know why Chef Hideki goes to get his bread there because he has a knack for picking out good things because that's his job each and everyday when he prepares his specials at Izakaya Gaku is to handpick what he is going to prepare for the evening.
I have to tell you though, they sell out of things relatively quick here and we were out of luck to get our hands on the English Bread that Chef Hideki gave to us. But we did get the opportunity to buy the Sandwich Bread which they took to the back and got it sliced for us. As for me, i prefer to have my bread sliced thick as opposed to having it cut the normal way because that's how i usually eat my toast in Japan with a hard boiled egg which just hits the spot for me.
What really impressed me about this place was how nice the young asian lady was who greeted us and told us about the bread that Chef Hideki gave us. I told her the bread that someone gave to us was round and not square and she immediately told me that it was the English Bread and that bread sells out real quick. But she told us to give them a call and make sure that we call them to reserve a loaf next time and she gave us a card with the days they are opened and closed. I was very impressed with her customer skills because she kept on apologizing for running out of the English Bread and reassured us that next time it would be available for us if we called. That is what you call customer service and because of her actions, i think i will be making my daily trek to Manoa to get our English Bread instead of my daily trips to Watanabe Bakery where we always go. Just a little reminder fellow Yelpies. Whenever getting a loaf of bread, always ask for a thick cut. It truly makes a difference when eating toast in the morning. Thank You Chef Hideki for turning us on to some really tasty bread...... -

Finally came to give this place a try, I got there mid morning so the case was still pretty full with some yummy pastries. I got the melon pan and that was good, the bread was soft and fluffy and the top had a nice sugary crunch. The workers are also nice and greeted me well. I'm am definitely coming here again to taste more goodies and maybe give it one more star ;)

Woo-hoo! An update :)
Here's a few more things I've tried and enjoyed:
butterscotch - something (forgot the rest of the name) - its a rectangular piece of white bread, almost like the french toast, but with hints of butter and covered in white granulated sugar on all sides. Mmm.. I didn't detect butterscotch really.. but it was delicious!
milky bar - a long skinny bun (like a skinny hot dog bun), filled with a sugar-butter based cream. It tastes great because the bread is really fresh and the cream has just the right ratio of sweetness and cream.
As I was paying, I saw that they have a list of their frequent customers written down.. and as time goes on, I hope they'll put me on their list :) yes, another ongoing relationship! My other love besides my fiance is Hokulani ;)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Head to Manoa Bakery for a sweet, fresh treat with a few old-fashioned twists!
ATMOSPHERE:
Well lit, clean bakery! Open the doors and get a welcome whiff of freshly baked goods!
SERVICE:
Its a good thing we don't go to bakeries for the service. No personality or friendliness whatsoever!
FOOD:
Manoa Rain: Warm, fluffy yeast doughnut! Light and tender, this doughnut proudly rivals the soft texture of Krispy Kreme. Coated in a sugar glaze then drizzled with creamy milky milk chocolate! The marraige between the soft and fluffy doughnut with ever so slight crust provided by the glaze plus the extra element of milk chocolate is insane! $1.45
French Toast: Thick, two-inch slices of white bread are cut into triangles and soaked in a light cinnamony french toast batter. The batter seems to have extra sugar so it crystalizes further when the bread is taken out of the batter. Left out to dry, the french toast can become a to-go breakfast. Deceivingly dry at first look, however, when bitten into, the french toast unveils a myriad of moisture and vanilla sweetness. $1.65
Overall, pastries here are excellent! If only the service was a little more pleasant. -

Good Japanese bakery, I've had their cream buns and such. I have to preface this by saying that I've never been here early in the morning to taste anything fresh out of the oven.

I would say this is a pretty average bakery. The fact that it is in a cute strip mall in Hawaii is what keeps it in business, methinks. The milky bar was delicious, but the place seemed deserted when I was there on both occasions. The clerk was polite, but not too friendly.

I have the cinnamon twist and sugar donut. The dough is more dense and chewy than what I had from other places in the mainland. I still like it and reasonably priced.

I stop by this place in the mornings because everything is always fresh and there's variety of bread choices to choose from each time. Service has always been great too.

It's been a while since I indulged in some treats here, so thought I'd pop in again. Tried the French Toast and Butterscotch pastries (yes, I was being extra bad!) and they were both really delicious! Service was exceptionally polite, as always. The great customer service and tasty treats keep me coming back here!

I used to love going to Manoa Marketplace early in the morning just to smell the fresh bread aroma coming from Manoa Bakery. Their Ham Parmesan rolls and Bacon rolls are pretty good, just a little too buttery and greasy for my taste. Instead, their regular white bread is really good. They have a soft, thin crust and an even softer middle. After I buy it, I usually have a couple of pieces as I'm going home while its still hot and fresh.

If you like Japanese-style bread, then this the place to try! Love the frank croissants, pain au chocolat, apple compote, Monroe bread, the outrageously buttery Danish bread, and even the hotel bread is grat just as it is!

Bakery Manoa is the great bakery.
They bake everyday. My favorites are English bread and Anpan (Japanese black bean paste is inside bread) and Cream cheese Biscuit.
They close on Mon and Tue.
You need to try everything! They are fresh baked everyday! -
