the bakery lofts is truly a unique living experience.

if you appreciate loft living and like to get creative with making an big open space a warm and cozy home of your own, you will dig it here.

more over, if you are a person who would enjoy a sense of community - like friendly hellos in passing - dinner parties with your neighbors - occassional all resident get togethers that may include competing over who makes the best cake or chili or mac n cheese, then you really will enjoy the BL's..

the resident manager is amazing and does everything she can to make your BL living experience the best that it can be.... sure, there are hiccups/conflicts that arise when you put a bunch a strangers in the same building to live amongst each other - but she is always professional, open, fair and always always seeks quick resolution....

if you are a kind-creative-pet-loving kind of person/couple then check out the bakery lofts. you just might fall in love....

all said, it's the kind of place that you get out of it what you put into it... it's a truly diverse community unlike any other i have experience in my 20+ years as a renter...
(i relate the magic of  living at the BL's to the mystical 28 Barbary Lane - but (obviously) replace the marijuana-growing with lush fruit, veg, and flowers in the community courtyard)

those who love it - have stayed...  (some have even moved away and come back!)

those who don't love it have moved on... and that's okay too.

My fiancee and I lived here for the last year and enjoyed our time at the Bakery Lofts very much.

    The good:
-Racheljoy, the community manager, is extremely welcoming and kind.  We always felt at home from the day we moved in until the day we moved out.
-The community is awesome full of artists, people who will take care of your pets while you're away, and a few homeless cats that live in the parking lot.  I'd highly recommend that if you live here you Like the Facebook page -- we didn't know about it until after we moved out and missed out on some events we would have liked to attended.
-For the space, the price was very fair.  Our unit had plenty of open vertical storage for boxes, which was great, but a little unsightly.
-Lots of natural light and parking.

    The not so good:
-The neighborhood isn't sketchy, but it's also not carefree.  Our loft had windows facing 46th Street and while nothing ever happened when we left them cracked for ventilation, I was often worried something might.
-The loft got cold, and with such a big space it was very hard to heat without it getting expensive.
-The walls are thick, but not that thick.  I'm a very, very light sleeper and we ended up having to turn a fan on each night for white noise due to hearing the dogs up stairs run around, cars passing by on the street, and our techno-loving neighbors (infrequently, but enough to note).

In the end, we moved because we got tired of loft life and wanted a place with doors, and because I could afford a place a bit more modern after two promotions in one year.

If you're down for loft-living, and want a bunch of cool neighbors, I'd definitely recommend the Bakery Lofts.

Most people write reviews when they have crappy experiences, or, in the case of a living situation, wait until they've moved on. I feel the need to Yelp about the Bakery Lofts - now.

I moved here in May 2010. We had driven past the front of the Bakery while scoping out SF. We later had seen an associated ad on Craigslist. We literally never stepped foot into our apartment before signing the lease and sending our deposit. Why? Solely due the building manager, Racheljoy. She was so professional on the phone, had amazing follow-through, was so damned delightful, and made me feel like family - from the very first moment I spoke with her. I had absolutely no reservations. And since, have not been disappointed.

The Bakery is a community of freakishly friendly, welcoming people. So much so, the first couple of months I kept waiting for someone to jump out of the bushes, kick me in the shins and run off cackling, whilst shouting, "It's all been a ruse!" But no, believe it ... Bakery folks genuinely ARE weirdly nice. You have "neighbors" here ... you know, kinda like in the old days, where people sat on their stoops and actually TALKED to one another. (Wow. Imagine that). Again why? I believe largely due to Racheljoy, while she organizes cupcake bake-offs, pet costume contests, grilling in the courtyard, and even atomic bowling - events that have coerced potential hermits such as myself to become acquainted with some pretty fabulous humans (and their pets).

Sure, the lofts have MUCHO character, the sunlight is off the hook, there's gated, off-street parking and pets are MORE than welcomed here. But eventually the aesthetics and logistics of your swanky loft won't be of great concern. You'll be too busy out spending quality time with truly spectacular people.

Thanks Bakery - for a home away from home.

I was trying to set up and appointment to go visit the lofts because i was interested in moving there.
Had the chance to speak to Raquel of the managers there and she asked me to be there Tuesday at 4 pm for a tour of one of the units that was going to be vacant.
So I showed up a little before 4 to make sure I was on time, called the leasing office and someone said "Ill buzz you in and have Raquel go pick you up",
    so I waited.....
    and waited....
and waited some more until 15 min later I called the office again to ask what was going on just to get a rude answer :
" Oh I didnt know you had an appointment, Rachel should be there soon"...WTF?!
Waited 4 minutes more and no one showed up, so I left.

Later when I was already driving away,  Raquel called to try to apologize for leaving me out there waiting for half an hour, telling that she had no idea I was there...mind you she scheduled the appointment; that the other manager took care of that side of the building and that I should have gone to the other side of the building. ( Geez, if i had only known...) and that she never got the call or text from that other manager.

I was disappointed at the lack of customer service from both the managers, and the lack of interest on their part on fulfilling their duty to at least show the place.
Manager 1 that buzzed me in: if you have someone waiting at the door, and you cant find manager 2, wouldn't it be nice to go get the person that you buzzed in instead of just leaving them out hanging??

    FAIL!!

    Wont be coming back.

The Bakery is a truly fun place to live. We haven't had any problems in the six months we've been here and the neighbors are friendly, the feeling in the complex is very laid-back and the pet-friendly vibe is great.

My husband and I had a hard time finding a place we could afford to rent while our house was being renovated. We were looking for a short-term lease and had a pet, which made the hunt even harder. We saw a listing on Craigslist from a resident that had to move half-way through her year lease so we called Racheljoy and she let us sign right on for 6 months at the rate the previous tenant paid and let us go month-to-month after that when the project went long. While short-term leases are not the norm here, we were really lucky and happy that Racheljoy was flexible and cool about it since we came to look at the open apartments here and B2 a week or two before and really liked the place but didn't put an application in because they do require a year lease.

The only thing I'd say is get a window AC unit if you're on the parking-lot side of the building. It gets hot in the summer!

This place is a hell of a lot better deal than other "lofts" in Emeryville (some of them asked almost 2xs the rent for a 6-month lease, were in the middle of the stink of the sewage treatment plant, or were just tiny apartments overlooking railroad tracks). Bakery is a true loft that actually has an industrial feel, really high ceilings and exposed brick walls. I'd recommend it to friends who aren't ready to retire to suburbia, are looking for a nice place that takes pets (and not grudgingly), likes to know their neighbors and wants an easy commute to SF.

    LOVE the Bakery Lofts!!!

These lofts are spectacular with accents of exposed brick and wood. The tenants are fun, lively, respectful and have sincerely become our friends. The resident manager Racheljoy does a fantastic job keeping the community united with lots of "bake offs", art shows, and Open Studios. Also,If you ever need anything tended to in your loft, Racheljoy is on it!!!!

If you are moving to the East Bay and are loft hunting, be sure to check out the Bakery Lofts!

Rustic, urban living at its best.  These lofts have exposed beams, super high ceilings, brick walls and hardwood flooring.  It's located in a transitional neighborhood on the border of Oakland and Emeryville.  Arizmendi Bakery is a short walk away.  They're pet friendly with their own mini "dog park" on the premises.

My cat and I lived at the B2 Lofts first and when a space opened up at the Bakery Lofts, the manager, Racheljoy quickly notified me, knowing that I originally wanted a space at the Bakery side a year ago when I first moved in.

The community has a great bunch of people who look out for each other.  Many artists occupy these spaces, decorating the hallway corridors with their beautiful work.  Racheljoy also does a great job of having community activities and events (e.g., 4th of July BBQs, chili cook-offs, artist open houses, etc.)

Check out the Bakery and B2 Lofts if you're searching for a great loft living community in the East Bay!

I saw there was a few places for rent on CL so I checked out Yelp and some other review sites. People were generally positive about the place and negative about the resident manager. (foreshadowing)

So whatever...I toured the place and was looking forward to moving in depending on the available lofts. I just couldn't get an answer whether or not the people were moving out or not. She said I will let you know after she took my application. I don't know why they were even advertised and available because they were both fully furnished.

Agreed that the resident manager is a flake, no biggie. The place looks pretty cool. Area is very ghetto and somewhat unsafe. Manager did tell me there were a few break ins since she had been there.

Worst part is she ran my credit and never even called me back. What a waste of time. Rachel...get a grip...other people have lives.

I have lived in both the B2 and Bakery. Totally different vibes, Bakery more artist friendly coolness and thus you are always going to be entertained to some degree. The B2 is a more family/9-5er kind of place. Still cool, everyone is still friendly just totally different.

Would love to see the B3 developed and an actual dog parkish thing instead of a poop place. Which is me just being a brat because where else can you find a place that has a nifty poop park!

Not only that - the community rocks. Bake-offs, movie nights, rockband competitions, Open studios with art that will make you swoon with pride to be part of such an awesome community!

RJ and Raquel also rock my face off.

My Boyfriend and I moved here from Sacramento. The Bakery Lofts was the first property we viewed, and I was in love. I didn't need to go anywhere else. He didn't get the creative free spirit vibe, so we checked out several different styles of properties.  By the end of the day we ended up back at the Bakery Lofts. It helped that I had a list of all the things I wanted. This place had just about all of them. The feeling you get from walking threw the bamboo inspired front gate to the shared court yard is inspiring and calming. We happened to come on an open house artist studio walk. That right there blew me away. This is an actual living breathing artist colony. Everyone is so friendly. What a concept to talk and say hi to your neighbors. There are common areas to hang out, a barbeque and doggy potty area. The parking is gated and everyone has a numbered spot that is respected by the other tenants. Off street parking isn't a problem either. We enjoy the park across the street for our dog. Bart is about a mile away and so is everything else. Shopping on 40th st, San Pablo, Shattuck and Telegraph should have every thing you need. If you have a bike, you may never need a car.
There are several different floor plans and each place has their own feel. We live in a studio loft that has tons of room for any size of furniture with enough wall space to start your personal art collection. The kitchen and bathroom have a little left for the heart to desire however it is geared towards artist and not yuppies. I see it for what it is. Either it works for you or it doesn't.
There is a resident manager; RachelJoy, that does so much to maintain a cohesive creative environment. If you tell her something broke is broke, within a few days or even the next day, there is someone here to fix it. So far we really enjoy living here. I highly recommend giving this place your first look. Call a head of time and make an appointment. Since she is a resident manager, she doesn't sit behind a desk selling apartments.
We'd like to stay here for our three years here. Once we moved in and got settled, we had no qualms about our decision.

    I love the bakery lofts.

Moved two years ago from Chicago and it was so friendly and great as I had no friends in East Bay.

Artistic, dog friendly and social environment.

Can't say enough nice things about it...real community feel.

You can bbq with the neighbors pretty much any night and there is always someone up for a chat in the common courtyard.

The lofts are spacious and great for artists.  Cool exposed brick walls and tile floors.

I have lived at the Bakery Lofts for just over a year. We moved here from Walnut Creek, where we were living in a commuter village. We're very glad we did move. Our neighbors are much more friendlier here than they were at our old place. Theres more of a community feel.

Each loft seems to be unique in their own way. Ours has a skylight, large bathroom with bamboo flooring, and a larger kitchen. Our windows look towards the oakland hills in the east, and we get plenty of sunshine.

One of the main reasons we moved here was the proximity to the city and the fact that they are pet friendly. The community has dogs of all sizes.

If you're looking for a short commute in a unique community thats pet friendly, then look no further!

ok so I just want to set the record straight. There is absolutely no homophobia coming from management. My partner & I feel totally comfortable here as do many of our gay neighbors. That particular comment couldn't be farther from the truth.

My boyfriend got a job in San Francisco one day and the very next day we were searching for places to live that were close to public transportation, fit our budget, and had the potential for awesome community opportunities. Our first stop was Bakery Lofts and, in the end, we didn't really need to look anywhere else.
Racquel met us for a Saturday open house to view not only the two available Bakery Lofts, but also the units available over at B2, the adjacent apartment/loft complex. The lofts were large and spacious, and really decently priced. We were super bummed to find out that the loft that we wanted at Bakery was taken by Monday!
But no worries, my friends! Racheljoy, the property manager at the Bakery Lofts gave us the lowdown on a loft that would be opening soon. And she even gave us a reduced rent! We secured a place by Monday night!*
So now we're both very eager to move in as the whole process of viewing the lofts, signing the paperwork, and securing a unit was a breeze! Everyone has been so very helpful!

I'll update my opinion of this place after a couple months of living here, but I doubt it'll change! (It may even increase... is it possible to give this place 6 stars?)

*I guess it should be noted that both my boyfriend and I have pretty good credit scores, etc, so that might have played heavily on our ability to secure a place so quickly.

Just moved here and I am so in love with this place! It's a wonderful community of artists that really work and make a living from their craft. When we were first looking at the Bakery they were having an artist open house so we got to see a lot of the other lofts, and they are spectacular! Our apartment actually isn't a loft, but it's enormous and has ceilings that are amazingly high. We attended a potluck with our neighbors the other night and everyone is very welcoming and cool! There's a good mix of younger and older people that all get along really well. The complex is very animal friendly and just about everyone has a dog or a cat. Plus, as an added bonus there are a bunch of cats that hang out in the parking lot that are super nice! haha. The biggest thing for me though, is that I finally have some space to do serious projects, and I don't have to spend extra to rent a work studio. I am looking forward to painting in our new space and my boyfriend can't wait to do some wood working. Also, the location is pretty sweet, we are a very short bike ride or medium walk away from the MacArt Bart, which is the transfer hub for all the trains going into the city so commuting is easy.
