I'm from California and I was visiting Portland for a few days. I happened to stumble upon Bakery Bar by mistake (I was wondering around and got very lost). It's not exactly in the most pedestrian-friendly neighborhood though. If i remember correctly, it's in the industrial part of Portland, bordering the historic neighborhood. The inside of Bakery Bar reminds me a bit of IKEA, but in a cool way.

I ordered a chocolate-espresso slice of cake and had a cup of the house coffee. It was a very delicious combination! Especially after being lost and tired for such a long time.. =P My friend ordered the pumpkin bread and the macchiato, which were both very tasty!

Did you know that one of the top manufacturers and distributors of pom-poms is located in Portland's own Central Eastside? No joke.

I wish I had a pair... I would do a little cheer for Bakery Bar.

Tucked away in the last "indy" part of Portland (and to call it industrial is almost becoming a stretch) this is a great spot to meet up for a coffee and something sweet.  To say it was chill would be an understatement.  From the mellow staff, the no frills menu, and the tunes that are of the right stuff to either nod your head to or ignore, this place earned my love from the first moment.

I only had a latte, but it was just the way I like it, plus a purdy little leaf in the foam.  I'd swing by here again to pick up some treats to take on my way home.

    Gimme a R! Gimme a R! Gimme a B! Gimme a B!

What's that's spell?  Rah Rah Bakery Bar!!!

    Snickerdoodle Ice Cream Sandwich.

Do I really need to go on?

As I enjoyed my Nancy's nonfat yogurt with honey and sipped on a perfectly pulled latte, the only problem I could come up with was why the heck I've never been here before!

The steady flow of business proved that I've obviously been living in a cave, considering that the line was never less than three people deep. And how could it not be? Low key atmosphere, Stumptown coffee, fast and free wi-fi, Bakery Bar proved to be the perfect place to chillax on a Saturday morning.

(note: Ernesto was upset that no food was served on weekends!)

This little gem has been hiding itself from me for much too long. While the 5-star reviews are all over Yelp like white on rice, the physical location took forever to work its way in front of my face (enough to cause me to cruise in for a coffee and a treat). And while it continues to evade me on a daily basis (since it's down in the zone of industry in SE), I know where it's at, and I know how good it is.

I can say without hesitation that the baked goods at Bakery Bar are freakin' amazing. Their Millionaire Tart, to be exact, is a gushing dream of chocolate, shortbread, and liquor. The Earl Gray shortbread cookie is fantastic. And everything else I've tried? Amazing. Really. Quite good. Words escape me.

Now usually the down-side to a good bakery is their coffee, right? Either the coffee is good and the baked goods lack, or vice versa? Not here. Great coffee too. Regardless of which monkey is on your back at the given moment, sugar or caffeine, Bakery Bar has got you covered. If only it weren't in the middle of, well, the industrial district, I would be there more often.

The free wifi means that the Laptop Brigade (yes, i stole that term) is usually in effect. Seating can be an issue at times. But for me, I grab n' go.

Next up? The cute little red velvet cake with star-shaped frosting decorations on the outside. I'm currently drumming up an occasion as an excuse to buy one and dig in. Is Boxing Day any time soon?

    Okay full disclosure time....

    I didn't eat here.

    I didn't drink here.

I didn't spend any money here.

BUT, I did accompany someone who ate and drank and spent their money here and I can attest to the radness (yes, I said radness) of the gorgeous cakes they have here!

Wow, they are the true meaning of darling. Gorgeous little creations of decor at its finest. I am not even a dessert person and I was tempted to crawl inside the case and gobble one up.

    As for flavors, oh yum...

    Banana Bourbon Cake
Sour Cream Citrus Poppy Seed Cake
    Orange Olive Oil Cake

Discretely tucked away, this little coffee shop is a cozy gem offering a tantalizing array of baked goods.

Of all the usual coffee/tea beverages available, the cold press iced coffee was smooth and wonderful.  But I think this is a place one should come to for bakery treats and not lattes.  The scones looked amazing and 4 or 5 of the people I was with are addicted to them.  There were also three pound cakes - two of which had frosting slathered beautifully across their tops.  Frosting makes everything better.

The pace of the staff was....unhurried.  Some might even say slower than cold molasses.  But everyone was polite and I enjoy a barista who is not adding to my own sense of frenzy in the morning.

Credit card charges of less than $4 get a $.35 fee so bring cash!

    Oh my little Bakery Bar
For you I walked on foot so far
To try your much-raved about cupcakes
Alas, there were none in the case!
Instead I had a Cafe Miel
My favorite latte!, done so well
Your biscuits, too, were quite divine
And your baristas - very fine.

I will be back for cake!

What a perfect place to meet some of Portlands most fabulous yelpers for the first time!  I feel slightly guilty assigning stars to Bakery Bar as I only had two cups of peppermint tea but....hey, the tea was quite good so whatever!

Bakery Bar is a really cool, mellow place.  The menu was small but sounded quite delicious.  What a bummer that they don't serve lunch on the weekends.  I will go back just to sample some of the delicious sounding sandwiches!  Everyone mentioned how delicious their drinks and treats were...that just added my wanting to head back there soon.  And wow, all the desserts looked quite amazing!  If I hadn't just eaten a treat from the Pearl Bakery I would have indulged....sigh, well another reason to go back.  Cool little place, totally check it out but make sure you are hungry when you head over there!

Anyway, where I didn't really sample much of what they serve at Bakery Bar I do feel slightly guilty reviewing it.  But, I guess based on the fact that I plan to go back there quite soon I figure ehhhh...what the heck.  So, here is a simple breakdown of  how I decided on five stars:

    1 star:  delicious peppermint tea
1 star:  meeting yelpers for the first time
1 star: overall cool, mellow vibe, free wi-fi
1 star:  delicious sounding menu and really fantastic looking desserts/treats
    1 star: manband

A friend forced me in to this place today.  Immediately upon entering I was already thinking of all the nasty (yet poignant) things I was going to say in my first 1 star Yelp review.

THEN I had their chocolate cake w/espresso glaze and a beautiful mocha with a heart on top.  It was true love.

It should be mentioned all of the barista boy glamazons working looked like they would benefit from a serious scrubbin' .  Also it was way too crowded for me (that's why I live in st johns)!

Everything here is beautiful! I had a scone and a buttermilk biscuit with jam on top and they were delicious. I have heard that the sandwiches are great too. Plus you can special order cakes and other delights - beautiful!

A little hard to find, but worth it. If you are taking the bus, get off on the Hawthorne bridge (like going to OMSI), but head north. Only a few blocks and you are there. Plus the walk helps justify a larger cupcake . . . or two.

Hidden, yummy bakery on east side

We stumbled upon this place while out taking a walk on the east side of the river. I honestly don't think I would have ever known about if it we hadn't accidental found it. It's a charming shop that serves all your favorites sweets and pastries but also really good sandwiches. We split a turkey sandwich, which was so soft and fresh. Of course by splitting it, it gave us an excuse to overindulge and get two cupcakes each for dessert. The cakes looked pretty good too, so I will definitely go back and get one for a special occasion.

Every time I venture over to this side of the river, I wonder why it isn't more developed. It's just as lovely and worth the trip.

At last! A bakery worth re-visiting! I had not intended to wind up at Bakery Bar - this turned out to be a fortuitous accident. I was on my way to an appointment at OHSU, somehow took a wrong turn, got all confused, and wound up back on the SE side of the river...oh well, while I'm here, might as well enjoy some sustenance to build up my confidence when I attempt to find my appointment again!

I bought a black pepper biscuit that had a delicious dollop of caramelized onions & some goat cheese on top. So much pleasure for under $3.00!! I want to come back & sample more goodies. The lovely woman behind the bar gave very clear, easy to follow directions to my appointment (much better than the google map) and I got to my destination happy, full, & on time. The cakes here look beautiful, the baked goods seem very enticing...I hear the siren song of pastries...

So.. as a vegetarian who does not enjoy a sweet breakfast, I have to admit, my breakfast choices tend to be rather boring (eggs, toast and maybe some hashbrowns if I'm feeling really crazy). But the bakery bar has the most uh-mazing peppery scones. The breakfast sandwich with the egg, goat cheese and roasted seasonal vegetables on a pepper scone is incredible. I recommend it to veggies and meat-eaters alike.

The table service on the weekends is also very nice. I would have given them 5 stars, but during the week you have to pay for coffee refills which does not work for me when I am having breakfast and catching up with a friend. 4 refills later, I was out three bucks!

What a great experience we had here.  My boyfriend and I were totally lost.  We were driving around Portland trying to figure out where the rose gardens are - didn't realize I shoulda asked for Washington Park...anyhoo...we needed coffee and a little sustenance and good directions.  Bakery Bar met all three criteria.

The coffee was scrumptious.  The barista - is that the correct term if it's a man?  Is it baristo?  Anyhow, he made the most gorgeous design on top of my bf's mocha and while we waited an additional 30 seconds for it to be ready b/c of this - the detail was not lost on us.  It was amazing - with great chocolately flavor to match.  We eat picked a scone to nosh on as well - the fennel one was sublime and I fully enjoyed the lime poppyseed I had as well.  Next, the directions... the lovely cashier wrote out very clear and neatly printed directions that got us from where we were to where we wanted to be.  Fabulous!!

We also fell in love with the adorable cakes and vowed to return to try them one day - or order them for some occasion.  Just lovely.

    Thanks for everything Bakery Bar!

The first day of my first job in Portland, I needed to grab my first lunch. Lucky for me I worked around the corner from Bakery Bar. I didn't really think much about the name of the place but realized later that they do serve beer and baked goods.

I had a grilled vegetable panini and drooled over the gorgeous cupcakes and baked goods. Oh, I would be back. Maybe in an hour or so.

I worked around the corner for about 8 months and pretty much made the Bakery Bar a happy habit of mine. Every once in a while I would surprise my husband with their indulgent cupcakes (which I think more than compete with Saint Cupcake's wares). Also when I would take my miniature friends to OMSI, it was nice to pop in and get them something kid-sized to eat.

But what was the baked good that still had me thinking of the Bakery Bar now that I am a hundred or so miles away? The fennel golden raisin scones! I wanted them so badly I googled a recipe for them and made them in my kitchen in Seattle. They weren't as good, but it eased the pain for a little while.

The other day my coworker informed me that she needed to buy cupcakes for her boss (me being the cupcake expert around).  I wanted to try something new and stick to the east side, so we decided on bakery bar.

a quick drive down mlk brought us to the bar, which was about half-full with a lunch crowd.  we found that there were two varieties of cupcakes, all very cute, banana and carrot cake.  ehhh.  i wasn't that impressed, but we did end up splitting a banana one.  what got us more excited were the mini cakes.  not being able to help ourselves, we picked a raspberry chiffon cake with lime cream and a fondant flower decoration.  so cute!

after delivering the cupcakes, we brought the mini cake back to work and dug in.  i will say, they went a little heavy on the butter cream.  sometimes it felt like we were eating sticks of sweet butter.  the cake and lime cream filling were delicious, but the stomach ache that quickly followed made me think twice about ordering another in the future.

i think ill stick with the coffee and cupcakes here next time, but it's a cute place...and there's good shopping next door.

Do you see the cake in my pic? It's from the Bakery Bar. I have to say their coffee buttercream frosting is ridiculously good. Love the small cakes that they have on a daily basis...they say they serve 2 but really could serve 4 and at $12, they're a steal considering the cost of desserts at other joints around town.
Haven't had the pleasure of lunching here yet, but the sandwiches look amazing.
Oh and if you're on a budget, opt for their super moist cupcakes!

Not sure how this possibly ended up in the nightlife section, but there ya go...

The Bakery Bar serves up fantastic pastries to accompany their perfectly pulled Stumptown espresso drinks. I've been going here nearly daily for 2 years now, and there's really nothing that comes close to the quality in the area.

The coffee is always excellent, but it's the food that keeps this place filled during the morning rush and the lunch hour. Though most of their sandwiches are meat based, the grilled cheese and egg salad are nice additions to the salad for vegetarians. During the winter, their soups are a treat, but again, usually meat based. The pastries are truly special. I switch off between the coconut scone and banana bread in the mornings, but once in a while I'll stop in on my way home for their amazing tarts.

Other things to note: They usually make one espresso drink at a time, so be prepared to wait for that perfect latte if you see a line. Punch cards are a huge bonus. And, call ahead to order your sandwich if you're in a rush.

    Oh, my goodness.  Bakery Bar.

I just had my first visit to this place and, seriously, Bakery Bar can put thoughts into your head.  Life changing ones.  Ones where you can't imagine why you thought it would be a good idea to move back to the east coast next winter to be closer to your family when EVERYTHING you really need is right there in that little bakery case...

I ordered the chocolate bread and a buttermilk biscuit with raspberry jam.  Then I found that I couldn't stop ordering and picked out a couple cookies- one pecan, one lemon.  This is one of the best $5 bills I've ever spent on treats.

    Hooray, Bakery Bar!

It's really funny to me that Bakery Bar is listed as desserts, coffee and tea, because I associate it with a great lunch. Whenever I get a craving for soup, a trip to Bakery Bar is not far behind. Even though there's only one soup selection per day, Game is always ON at Bakery Bar.

We just had lunch at Bakery Bar--had the creamy tomato soup (with the house-made cheesy crackers that you can crumble on top) with a grilled cheese sandwich. Heaven! It was quite possibly the best tomato soup I've ever had. And, I've had a lot!

We also had one of their delicious cupcakes for dessert. It was dressed up for Halloween with a fondant eyeball on top. Spooky and delicious! More on the cupcakes another time (love 'em)...

Run, don't walk, to Bakery Bar!!!

I brought my six-year-old here one day when he was mad at me. I'll spare you the details, but let's just say mommy knows nothing about Nintendo DS and is clearly going to suffer in H-E-double-hockey-sticks for it.
Anyway, we stopped by Bakery Bar to have a makeup snack. The kid sidles up to the counter and tells the tattooed barista he'd like, "a vanilla latte and a chocolate cupcake...wait, no...an eclair!" He gives me an evil sidelong glare.
The barista looks up at me and I mouth the words, "decaf please" before ordering myself a bourbon caramel latte and, oh heck, why not, chocolate cupcake.
While the guy is making our coffee, the kid starts to chat him up about his tattoos.
    "What's the skull for?"
"I dunno. I like it though."
    "Me too."
He brings our coffee and treats to the table and the kid suddenly gasps. I look at the steaming latte in front of him to see that the clever barista has made a skull and cross bones in the foam of his (secretly) decaf latte. He is the BEST. BARISTA. EVER! Well, according to the six-year-old.
The coffee was great (bourbon caramel with a homemade marshmallow?!? Yum.) and the desserts were exactly the way I like them. Rich, but not too rich. Sweet, but not too sweet. The cupcake was perfect and didn't do that buttercream-thing...you know that weird film you get in your mouth that tastes like sugar and Crisco?  Ugh.
I haven't had the sandwiches there, but I'd like to go back and try them. Plus, I want to see if they can put a pony in my latte.

Dear Bakery Bar, I may have to hate you a little now, for offering up the best cupcake in Portland, and sass from the servers to boot. It's not just that you put Saint Cupcake and the rest to shame, or that you've surpassed my best loving memories of my mother's kitchen... oh no, you couldn't stop there... you had to hook me with the first gleeful lick of coffee buttercream (yeah, i heard the angel's chorus), and reel me in with funny little fondant decorations on your cakes. Now I'm a slave for this crack-fection, and I only work a few blocks away. Thanks a lot darling. Yours truly, Frank

I love meandering around the gritty part of the Southeast Industrial district, with its patches of leftover cobblestone and old train tracks and loading docks.  This must be what the Pearl looked like before its big makeover and before all of the young transplants like me moved to the city.  And while the Pearl has moved on to its new life, the Southeast Industrial Area continues as gritty as ever, but still manages to harbor several great eateries.  The Bakery Bar is a cute coffee shop that does double duty cooking up beautiful cakes.  Along with the usual coffee, scones, muffins, etc., they sell adorable cakes for two.  Beware, though, they are not open on Sundays.

Here in the Central Eastside Industrial District, options are limited if you want to walk somewhere for a snack. Sure, there's clarklewis if you have some money and time to burn, or the OMSI cafeteria, if you're completely insane. Bakery Bar fills a need, and does it quite nicely. The pastry case looks like art. The chocolate chip oatmeal cran walnut cookie works together great - quality quality ingredients. The coffee is good, the art on the walls is interesting. The counter staff acts a bit gruff but is always accomodating. Only negative is that if the place is full, you can't have a conversation with the person across the table from you without screaming. Love this place - will need to stop in for lunch at some point...

    hell yeah.
i would have given it 5 stars if it were open either more hours on saturday, or on sundays. either one.
but let me talk about why it's great:
1- the pastries- pumpkin bread with cream cheese frosting, bacon and apple scones, coconut scones. you are all delicious.
    2. the cupcakes- everything about their cupcakes is just right.
3- the cakes- they have some pretty beautiful, fancy cakes. and for how beautiful and fancy and delicious they are, they are not very expensive at all. my friend purchased one of the smaller cakes (the 6" one) and it was SO VERY TALL. its said to serve 10, but it served more, and all of these people really like cake. none of this "just a little piece" business.

and not that this has anything to do with them, per se, but there is scooter/motorcycle parking around the corner, which is brilliant.

i hear they're opening a location on glisan and 29th, which is way too close to my house.

The employees made the effort to learn my name quickly, suggested I start a tab which I did, and so now I can enjoy the convenience of stopping by to say hello and just helping myself to my cup of coffee . . . which is so nice especially on those days where the line is long and I have a meeting in 5minutes.

Bakery Bar makes a good cupcake. Not what I would call the best cupcakes in the city but really good none-the-less. I was really impressed by their designs. I had some made for a party and even though I could not make it into the shop on the same day as the designer to do tastes and talk with her, she went out of her way to communicate over email and through the other staff. I was very happy and would use them again for a party without a doubt.

It's really not fair for me to review Bakery Bar as it is one of the few food options near the office I work at and so I end up eating there quite often and have inevitably burned out on some of the food. However...their banana bread is freaking amazing (at $2.00 a slice it better be) and the people are really cool. The sandwiches are pretty good and while I don't know for sure, they seem pretty healthy compared to the usual lunch fare. I hear the cup cakes and other pastries are fantastic although I haven't really indulged myself. Burnout aside, I'd say I'm fan.

The coffee is great. The pastries are yummy. The wait, however, is just unbearable. I understand that quality takes time, but the glacial pace at which coffee appears to be made at Bakery Bar is over the top. Their food is alright, not worth the money, but their pastries are pretty good. If it would go a little faster, I'd love to give it a better rating... but right now, can't do it.

Everytime I go here, it seems to be closed.  Can't depend on this cafe, and that's a bummer.

It was a dark and stormy morning... I needed caffeine so I decided to try out Bakery Barn. Of course, I walked in to a trap, a delicious vegan frosted covered trap! Stumptown's  Rwanda Muyongwe was on tap and a Vegan Coconut Scone was looking at me seductively from the other side of the pastry case. After my first bite of scone, I had a very "Ratatouille" movie flashback to my childhood and Christmas time (for some reason). But besides kicking my sensory neurons in the balls (in a good way!) the scone was still warm inside!  Come ON people, that is unheard of! it was almost 9am and your scones are warm??? Thanks for making my day wonderful.

I just moved into the neighborhood (NE Glisan) and was so excited to see Bakery Bar mere blocks from my new place. I was introduced to their scones at a staff meeting once, so I was eager to check out the rest of their selection. The scones are a-mazing. I highly recommend the apple-bacon and the strawberry vegan scones. The espresso bread with espresso glaze is maybe the best piece of pastry in Portland, it's moist and dark and decadent. They make really decent espresso drinks and coffee (Stumptown), too.

I only have two criticisms of Bakery Bar (Glisan location). The first is that the staff are almost painfully disaffected, and seem to be unaware of any good model of customer service. I wouldn't go so far as to say they're snooty or mean or anything. The service is just really slow and not overtly friendly. My other criticism is the prices. The prices for the pastries aren't listed anywhere and they have varied so much to the point that I'm not sure the pricing isn't arbitrary. Almost $5 for a scone is really, really too much. And they are really great scones. But yeah. They're scones.

Excellent baked goods, good coffee, not-so-stellar service, too-high prices.

One has to be careful not to overdose on scones from the Bakery bar, but they are so, so good. And the migas are to die for. Reason I can't give it 5 stars? The not so great service, tend to run very slow.
