We stopped after finding the reviews here. This place is an awesome little hole in the wall. My wife had the Canadian bacon and cheese and I went with the jalapeño and cheddar. They were awesome. The savory flavors were nicely balanced by the sweet flavors of the dough.
Tom is a character. Nice to run into good hearted people like him.
I wish I would have found this place sooner. -

Tom welcomed us with a lot of aloha and we walked away with a great assortment of malasadas--along with some fresh picked tomatoes that he happened to have that day. A worthy stop between Akaka Falls and Hilo. Plenty of other baked goods, too, if you're not a fan of malasadas.
Tip: When you pull in, park directly facing the bakery. That way you won't block the business to the left or the driveway to the right--Tom is considerate of his neighbors. -

Wonderful cheesecakes and darn good malasadas.
I think I am going to start making Baker Tom's a regular stop because there are so many goodies I want to try.
Baker Tom does more than just baked goods. He does fresh-made hamburgers, Indian tacos, and even chips that I believe are homemade. Yum!
Tom himself is a really cool dude, which I think makes his food even better. -

We tried the cinnamon raisin (AMAZING!), the banana (so so), the regular (good) and the canadian bacon and cheese (yum!). It was a good stop off for lunch on the way to the botanical garden up the street.

I just love stopping at Baker Tom's because you never know what will be available. Last time I was there I had a peanut butter and jelly malasada, caramel corn and a lilikoi malasada. All were amazing. He is so sweet and has such a great story, always so kind and helpful.

Best malasadas in Hawaii. I prefer their dough flavor more the Leonard's in Oahu. My favorite is the pb&j and pizza malasadas. The dough has a perfect sweetness to it and it's really fluffy texture as you bite into them.

Best malasadas ever! This place may look kind of shady, but it's totally worth the stop. There's an amazing selection of filled malasadas both sweet and savory: poha berry (from local farm), raspberry (from local farm), lilikoi, pizza, jalapeno cheese, and even more. There's also plain for the less adventurous. Everyone should stop by and support!

Our friends raved about this place, so we stopped in on the way back from the Hawaiian Vanilla Farm. Baker Tom loves to talk story, so you might catch yourself chatting with him for a while unless you have some place to be. He makes a variety of sweet and savory malasadas. For those unfamiliar with malasadas, they are Portuguese pastries which are similar to our filled doughnut covered in sugar. I was told that mornings are best for his baked goods since he sells out of certain ones by afternoon.
I got the raspberry filled malasada while my husband had the strawberry cheesecake one. In addition to pastries, he also serves simple breakfast dishes like eggs and omelettes, bake-at-home pizzas and farm fresh eggs. We bought a dozen of farm fresh eggs since it is hard to find locally grown eggs at the grocery stores here. He showed us the multicolored eggs indicative of true farm eggs. My mom has chickens and am no stranger to purple, blue and green eggs. I was very happy when I saw that Baker Tom's eggs were multicolored, too. Ok, that last sentence reads a bit funny...
We are glad to have discovered this little gem which is just a 10 min drive from our house. We'll be back for farm fresh eggs and yummy malasadas for sure. -

My wife and I stopped by and had a lilikoi and original masalada. Pretty amazing. Also had the hot dog in a bun. Yummy.
We also got to chat with Tom. A really wonderful man, who told us some history of the area.
Don't let the outside fool you, it's got exceptional baked goods.
They have a US map in front of the counter where visitors can show their hometown. We were the first to represent Boston. -

Where can you find a "bakery" attached to an auto repair store? The Big Island of Hawai'i, of course. :)
The bf's cousin raved about Baker Tom's malasadas--and as he's quite the donut aficionado with his own blog (http://www.donutblog.com) I knew we had to give it a try! So on one gorgeous morning on the Big Island we ventured down to Baker Tom's to grab a box of malasadas to bring back to the house.
True to form, the open store front was attached an auto repair shop. Why not, right? We didn't get a chance to chat with Tom though his Mom and Dad were staffing the front of the house. Unfortunately due to a large bread order that morning, they didn't have any of their infamous Peanut Butter & Jelly malasadas on hand. Though we did grab a mixed box of the following malasadas: Canadian Bacon, Lilikoi, Strawberry, Cherry, Apple...and even grabbed a cinnamon roll. As they handed over the heavy box over to us, I instantly caught the luscious aromas of freshly fried dough. Heaven. And yes, the box was still warm. :)
Once back at the house, we cut the malasadas in half so we could try multiple flavors. The dough was absolutely wonderful---light, crispy, yeast-y, and not the least bit greasy. Perfect. With the exception of the Canadian Bacon malasada, each were lightly dusted with sugar--great flavor and texture addition. Of the fruit options, the Lilikoi was my favorite. As for the Canadian Bacon, it was akin to a Ham and Cheese croissant with Canadian Bacon and Cheese wrapped inside. All of them perfect to enjoy with a hot steaming cup of Kona Coffee.
Next time, I've got to try the PB&J and the Jalapeno Malasada. So yes, I'll be back.
Also, on the sign, it noted that Baker Tom was the "Cheesecake King"....unfortunately there were no cheesecakes. :(
It's ok though, when in Hawai'i, eat Malasadas! -

This is an interesting and quirky place to stop for sweet treats.
Baker Tom is quite a character, he is worth the stop alone. The excellent malasadas and other bakery items are an added bonus. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but you will see many local people stop for items if you hang out for a little while. -

If I never ate a single malasada in my entire life and came here, I'd have been more impressed. IMHO better than Krispy Kreme but pales in comparison to my yardstick for malasadas. Those who know, know what I'm talking about :-)

Visited Baker Tom's on the way back from ziplining with the family. Our guides couldn't stop talking about this place and suggested we go. I was very leery when I pulled up and seen that it was a quirky little place built out of an old gas station. Looks can be deceiving , believe me. Tom's Malasadas(sort of a donut) were delicious and he was one of nicest people we met on the island. They came in sweet and savory varieties. I gnawed on a cherry for sweet and pizza(sauce, pepperoni, and cheese inside) for my savory choice. Good, homemade baked goods from a really cool guy. I'll stop buy whenever I'm on the big island!!

I've never had a malasada before. This was just a semi-random roadside stop for us, but it turned out to be a delicious one. 2 malasadas later, I must give five stars. Tom seems a bit crusty but friendly enough. He makes some fluffy dough. Not greasy like a donut. We got ours filled with liliko'i and rasberry but could have eaten them plain they were so good.
...Came back the next day for more. This time, we got there in the afternoon and snatched the last two plain (original) ones. Perfectly delicious as well. -
