Union Station (Red)
If you're an entrepreneurial type and looking to open a breakfast/bagel place, put it near this place - you'll crush them in no time.
This joint offers very average bagels, available at an inflated price and after an extended wait. I've been here three times in the last couple of months, and my experience invariably involved standing around for 15 minutes or more for a toasted bagel with cream cheese - and, one time they got the spread right but the bagel wrong, and then another they got the bagel right but the spread wrong.
Batting .333 is great in baseball, but in the service industry it's an absolute disgrace. Avoid this place - it's not worth the aggravation.
I really like Bagels & Baguettes, but feel its overrated. I would take an bagels and bagel sandwiches at Einstein's over it any day, but it is definitely the best of the area.
Is it bad that my favorite bagel I've ever had thus far was here and not in the bagel capital of the Big Apple? Bagels aren't my thing usually in the grand scheme of early morning options. I heard the bagels here were good and this rainy Sunday I happened to be in town led me exactly here.
And oh was I not disappointed. They had several varieties, along with bagel sandwiches (even, props for this, offering turkey bacon -- what a surprise for such a small place!). There was quite a crowd (even more so when I left), but the availability of options was pretty good at around 10:30AM.
I had their cranberry orange bagel with light cream cheese. The bagel had most definitely been made that day (love it when you just *know*). It was slightly smaller than some others I have had, which is not a bad thing due to their often RIDICULOUS size. It also was interestingly not as overwhelmingly heavy. OHHHH. Loved it. They toasted it just to the right point -- still soft but nice and piping hot, as if it had just come out of the oven.
Not sure how I'll swing it, but next time I go into town, this is going into my must-hit rotation. Good stuff!

Thank you Bagels and Baguettes.
Thank you for your heart-attack worthy egg and cheese bagel sandwiches to fill my rumbling alcohol-saturated tummy.
Thank you for your hot chai, when it hits my scratchy, begging for mercy from talking too much, throat, it just tastes so yummy.
Thank you for being so quick on your feet because I probably won't last much longer on mine.
And thank you for being so close to my boyfriend's house, as it only takes me five minutes to scoot my hungover butt back to his place to unwind.

I would give this place four stars, but sometimes their bagels are not completely cooked. The bagels are great when they are actually legitimate, fully-formed bagels.
The breakfast sandwiches are good, if terrible for you. They are made with American cheese and Sidamo (on H St) has spoiled me for egg and cheese sandwiches with cheese product instead of Cheddar. As for lunch, my co-worker is quite enamored of the size and quality of the Roast Beef sandwich (especially as compared to Cups' sandwiches.)

This heart attack will be worth it. Bagels & Baguettes makes one of the best bagel sandwiches on the planet. You can practically smell your blood pressure rising from outside.
Sausage, egg, and cheese on a plain bagel has never tasted so good. All of the rest are just imitations. Lunch sandwiches are out of sight, too, especially the "Chief of Staff." The crowds can be pretty fierce, so patience can be key. Also, seating can be difficult to come by. On a nice day, walk yourself up to Stanton Park and grab a bench.
No credit cards, kids, so make sure to bring some cash or be ready to pay the $2.00 ATM surcharge.

Yum! My personal favorite is a turkey sausage egg and cheese on a tomato basil bagel. Cheesy, flavorful, filling. I'm also a fan of the weekend special with turkey, guacamole, tomato, and cheese. Especially after a long night, these sandwiches combat the worst of hangovers.
The decor and ambiance...well there isn't really any to speak of. It doesn't have air conditioning and the menu is haphazardly arranged on the wall. On the weekends there is usually a line, but your order is generally delivered pretty quickly. Nonetheless, it is definitely worth a trip inside for their delicious bagels and breakfast sandwiches!
Oh, and they don't accept credit cards. But there is an ATM inside.

Okay, first things first: Bagels & Baguettes does *not* accept credit cards. Yelpers, getchyer heads in the game!
We all know DC ain't much of a bagel town, but Bagels & Baguettes comes through. It's chaos in there most of the morning, but the bagels are fantastic. You will wait a spell for sure. If you get anything standard - say, an egg & cheese on everything - watch out that one of the three people who ordered the same thing after you don't try to bogart your breakfast. But once you get that sandwich, you're going to be in bagel heaven. They also serve decent coffee and a selection of pastries and muffins made on the premises.

yes, i agree with the general sentiments, sausage, egg and cheese on a toasted bagel is the way to start the day. Maybe not the best bagel sandwich, but good enough to keep me coming back and certainly good enough for the 3 hr train ride to NYC that was ahead of me.
if you are looking for a no frills, bagel sandwich shop, stop in.

My boyfriend asserts that their sausage egg and cheese sandwich is the best he's ever had. I had turkey bacon & egg. I've only been to this place on the weekend, never braving the rabid morning crowd -- those people are serious! Even so, we had to wait a little bit for a table to open up.
I took away a star because they scalded the soymilk in my latte last time. I know that sounds bratty, but it tasted funky and it was almost as much as the delightful sandwich. I'm willing to forgive and/or to have just good 'ol drip coffee next time.
For me though, it's perfect stop to start your weekend that's too convenient to pass up.

Good sandwich or bagel joint. I often overlooked this place for other food items in the area, which in retrospect was a mistake...

They need to open one of these in my neighborhood, seriously. Even though it's packed during the mornings, it's definitely worth the wait for the egg and cheese sandwich. As Rachel said, the line can extend all the way out the door. When it's that intense, I just skip it until later when things have cooled down a bit. I'm pretty sure this place has been here since the start of time, and will always be here -- it's that good. I'm definitely *not* a breakfast person, but B&B really knows how to get the day rolling.

Whether you are starting your Saturday off with a hangover or getting up early to run errands, Bagels and Baguettes is the perfect way to begin your day. No matter how you feel, the sausage, egg, and cheese bagel is a crucial element in having a great weeken on the Hill.
Lunch is excellent, too. The Californian sandwich is my personal favorite. The wonderful people behind the counter will accomodate requests and service is fast, even when the line is out the door.
The place is small, seating is limited, and they don't take credit cards, but none of that matters. You cannot go wrong with anything you order, and you will never run out of new combinations of bagel sandwiches to try.

One can never go wrong here with the Chief of Staff sandwich (Hot Smoked Turkey & Ham w/crisp bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce & tomato and mayo). Also, their Turkey Sausage is quite tasty. Get it with Egg and Cheese on a Sesame Bagel. The staff is incredibly nice. Give them a break, it's hot in there and it gets quite busy.
