Review from Kevin N.
Herndon, VA
This is the kind of mom-and-pop place you love having in your neighborhood.
My wife and I have been here several times, we've enjoyed everything that we've ever ordered from here. All the bagel and bagel spread varieties are homemade, and excellent. The omelettes (especially lox & onion), sandwiches, and side dishes (home fries especially) are delicious. Another benefit is that the prices are very affordable, $5.50 for a two-egg bacon omelette is cheaper than IHOP or Silver Diner. The service is great here too, the food manages to come out very fast, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
I have not had Bagel Cafe catering yet, but that is because we have yet to have the opportunity to hire them. We are looking forward to it.
There are downsides to the Bagel Cafe: a) long lines, b) nowhere to sit, c) ugly menus. If you can suffer through these injustices, you will definitely enjoy Bagel Cafe. -

This is a great bagel and coffee place. I've been in Herndon since 1988 and started going here from when it first opened. the bagels are always good and I always pick up a couple of dozen with various cream cheeses for my team. they always go over well (and just go fast).
The breakfast sandwiches are excellent and if I'm in town on weekends, it is my regular stop.
The only shortcoming I see is that it opens at 6:30 am weekdays, so I'm already on my way to work and can't take advantage of it on a regular basis.
Give it a try. -

My husband grew up in Herndon and had been coming here since he was a kid. The Bagel Cafe hasn't changed since the 90s...still has great, fresh, food, good service and is still drawing in the crowds (and still has awesome 90s decor, you feel like you're on the set of Saved By The Bell). Even though it gets crowded, the service moves quickly, just make sure you listen carefully when your number is called as there is no microphone and it can be easy to miss.
This is a nice alternative to the many breakfast chains that are out there and definitely seems to be visited regularly by people in the town. -

4 stars for the overall experience of the Bagel Cafe.
Bagels are good (relative to the area), spreads and coffee are tasty. Sandwiches are great and their catering is one of the best in the area.
What makes this place great is the atmosphere, especially on weekends. It's a who's who of Herndon in a totally non-pretentious way - fitting for a bagel place. -

Everyone seems to love this place but we had a disappointing breakfast today. I had low fat chicken salad on a bagel. I enjoyed the chicken salad quite a bit but it was the only good thing we had. My bagel was hard, cold and blah. My husband had a sausage egg and cheese and his bagel was the same. Cold, hard and blah. Coffee was weak and my fruit salad had chunks of rock hard pineapple core and mushy grapes. Not very appetizing.

My fave brunch spot in Herndon! Bagels galore, the NOVA lox is where its at though. They also make (mix) their own cream cheeses. Fresh OJ, eggs if you want 'em, they have a good selection of deli salads as well. Really good! Too tiny is the reason I'm holding back a star, weekends are a bear to find seating and be prepared to stand in line.

Maybe it was my order but I felt like my breakfast was a bit heavy. I ordered the eggs and sausage, scrambled with cheddar cheese. The meal come with home fries and your choice of a bagel. The meal comes in a little tray with tinfoil on the bottom. The eggs were covered in the cheese and were very good but there was so much cheese that if the eggs were awful, I couldn't tell. The sausage though, was over cooked and it was only one link split into fourths. The home fries were good but really greasy noticeably so from the amount left in the bottom of the tray. The bagel was great. Somewhat expected from a bagel place but I was otherwise disappointed in the rest of the meal because there were so many great reviews. My recommendation is to stick to the bagels when you visit.

Best bagels in the metro area! Love the chicken salad also and the fresh orange juice. The service is good and the breakfasts and lunches are fresh, made on premises, consistently good, and the prices are reasonable for what they serve. Keep up the good work.

If I lived closer, I'd be a regular. Took my out of state in-laws here for lunch and everyone left happy ... yay! Quality food, relaxed setting, fast and polite service. Outdoor seating was perfect for this sunny fall afternoon.
My only discrepancy: plastic silverware. It's a pet peeve. -

Large menu and nice variety. Bagels are always fresh hot and tasty. I have ate here many times, especially for breakfast on the weekends.
Expect a large crowd and a tad bit noisy, but the food is worth it. The usually have some unique specials that majority of the time are very good.
I have also been here for lunch. Sandwiches are packed with plenty of meat and cheese and ingredients fresh.
Just about everything I have tried is good and priced fairly. Great little strip mall mom and pop shop here.
Service is very friendly and food arrives pretty quick. I highly suggest giving this place a try. -

Perfect little neighborhood deli! This was our first visit, we dined in for breakfast - great omeletes! Portions are hearty, bagels are chewy & soft. There's plenty of seating for dining in, but we were there when the outdoor patio was open (which provided even more seating).
Don't miss the fresh-squeezed OJ & a nice hot cup of coffee (or iced!). -

I love this place! In an area where we are surrounded by chain restaurants, this local place is a gem. They have so many cream cheese and bagel flavors, sandwich options, and great coffee! My favorite sandwich is the chicken salad (sooo good!). I definitely recommend it for breakfast or lunch!

It gives me hope for the future when awesome local places like this exist. Definitely stop in here sometime!

Visited for the first time today for lunch despite the fact that I lived across the street for about a year. Pleasantly surprised (though based on the other reviews, I shouldn't have been). Got there around 12:30 on a Friday and must have just gotten ahead of all the traffic. Cashier was very helpful and nice, and they have SO many selections.
I asked the cashier his favorite sandwich, and he said the mediterranean chicken pita with grilled chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions on a pita with yogurt dill sauce and feta cheese. It was really good! Chicken was out of this world. I also got a chocolate chip cookie which was as big as a pancake! (I didn't see them before I asked). However, it was one of those cookies that didn't have the choc chips baked in. Instead they were sprinkled on top. Not as cool. However, the cashier said the chocolate chip cookies weren't his favorite, HA! That's what I get for going against popular opinion.
Will definitely go again. -

Came here after my husband ran a 5k near Dulles by locating it on Yelp (shocking I know!)
Busy, busy place this Sunday morning and all but one of the small tables was taken so I told the hubby I wanted a savory combination rather than a sweet one, and went to snatch up the remaining table. When he arrived with the goods I had a sun-dried tomato bagel with sun-dried tomato cream cheese and he had a chocolate chip bagel with chocolate chip cream cheese. The bagels were wonderful! Very soft! The cream cheese was also really tasty and came in a pretty large cup. The coffee was just 'meh' and weaker than I usually like it to be, but hey. The bagels were darn good! Some other patrons were eating the bagel sandwiches with egg, meat, and such and they looked like they were enjoying themselves.
On the way out, I hopped back in line to get some bagels to go home to my freezer for another time and some cream cheese as well. The cream cheese varities are plentiful and if I ever make my way out here again I will try the one with bacon-cause it just looked that good!
Bottom line: Enjoyed the bagels and spreads enough that our next early morning flight out of Dulles may bring us back to this cafe! -

This bagel place is awesome. We went there for breakfast on Saturday and walked out stuffed and happy with our choices.
I opted for the everything bagel with plain cream cheese- yum! They do give a lot of cream cheese, but if you smooth it out over the entire bagel it's more manageable. Otherwise just wipe off what you don't want. I also got a small fresh squeezed orange juice ($3.25) which was so good.
My husband got a plain bagel with egg and sausage. He would have liked to see more sausage, but he ate the entire thing so it must have been "satisfactory" ;) He also got the orange juice but thought it was too tart. (This coming from the guy who LOVES orange juice so tart that I can't stomach more than a sip. So take that with a grain of salt.)
There are a ton of small tables packed into the little cafe and we were able to find a table for two. Had it been a few degrees warmer, we would have braved the outside and soaked up the sun. -

Great selection of creme cheeses. Super friendly.
PRO TIP: If you get your bagel toasted, ask for your cream cheese on the side or it will get too gooey/messy. -

These are some of the best bagels I've ever had. Its like moses himself came down to make them. They have a nice crust, strong but not crunchy. The inside is soft and delicious. The cream cheese here is all freshly made and doesn't taste like the crap dunkin donughts gives. Some people think they put on too much cream cheese, stop crying like a girl and just wipe it off.
Best bagels in DC area hands down. And I know my bagels. -

This place is so legit!
Everything Bagel with cream cheese and Nova!!!! Out of this world!
It is classic NY style lox with capers, red onion, lettuce and tomato.
They have, hands down, the best freshly squeezed orange juice I have ever had!!! Get both and you will leave stuffed and happy. The portions are huge, the salmon is top notch. All around great experience! Thanks for being so close! -

Let's be for real here, I see a lot of 'Best Everything Bagel in NoVA' being lackadaisically tossed around here. It is apparent to me this must be the persons first everything bagel, or they've been hittin the Black Tar too much.
As a gentleman, and fine connoisseur of Everything Bagels, I have to respectfully disagree with these assessments.
-- Your everything bagels have the 'everything sauce' on only one side.
This in effect makes one have a half everything bagel, as the bottom side of the bagel is essentially a plain bagel. Just flip the damn things in the everything sauce, and make me happy please! -

I love this place for breakfast and lunch. It's just around the corner from both my & my wife's offices, and while it's popular it never seems to be crowded enough to be annoying.
The bagels are delicious & make a great meal on their own.
The first time I went and ordered a sandwich, I was somewhat disappointed that it didn't come on a bagel - but I quickly found that they're happy to put your sandwich on anything you want. (though sometimes it's best not to. Chicken salad doesn't work well on bread that features a large hole)
recommendation for a quick lunch - BLT on a bagel.
Now on to breakfast - recommendation: bring a friend. the breakfasts are *huge*
but well worth it. excellent omelettes served with home fries and a bagel. so good.

Went here at the urging of one of my new favorite co-workers...and after wanting to steal her artichoke salad! The salad looked amazing and you could tell someone made it fresh that morning with lots of love! I convinced the family to stop by here on the way out of town a few weeks ago and it was clearly loved by all! My niece freaked when she saw that her chocolate chip cookie was bigger than her face . My two year old loves Rice Krispie treats and was all too eager to try and eat the entire monstrous sized one he selected. I selected the grilled veggie sandwich with melted provolone on an everything bagel. A-MA-ZING!!!! It was all I could do to stop stuffing my face long enough to breathe. The artichoke salad was delicious; well marinated and not at all over seasoned. We will definitely be back!

First stop before any road trip
Every time my husband and I go out on a road trip somewhere, the Bagel Cafe is our first stop. They have a wide variety of bagels and bagel sandwiches. They also have soups hot and ready in the morning. The crunchy bagel chips they serve with it are the perfect compliment.
The main reason we stop here instead of any other bagel place is the orange juice. The orange juice here is made on demand. The juicer not only makes the best orange juice you'll have outside of Florida, but it's also entertaining to watch. The juice is expensive, but very worth it. -

For anyone that went to UVA, I'm sure that you're familiar with Bodo's. This is basically like having a better version of Bodo's. I went with an Old Dominion bagel sandwich (turkey, ham, lettuce, tomato, sprouts, sundried tomato cream cheese) and a chicken salad bagel sandwich. The Old Dominion sandwich was really tasty. The bagel was thick and chewy and the sundried tomato cream cheese was a good mayonnaise replacement. The chicken salad tasted odd. The main problem with it was that it was too sweet. It is as if they added sugar to it. I prefer my chicken salads more savory as opposed to sweet. The potato salad and pasta salad sides were pretty good, although I'll have to work my way through the other sides. The sandwiches were a good size and a decent price.
The location had a decent amount of tables and the staff is pretty friendly. If you go early afternoon, just watch out for them not having the flavor bagel you want. -

My bagel was dry and hard. The gobs of cream cheese helped with this. My friend had less cream cheese, so her bagel sucked.
It was noon on a Saturday, but why can't a bagel shop give me a fresh bagel? That's why this place gets 1 star, because all they have to do is give me a fresh good bagel and some cream cheese, and they failed. -

So..... Bagels. Should it be that hard to make a good bagel? I don't think so, and yet, so many of the chain bagel joints prove me wrong so often it hurts.
The Manhattan Bagels, Chesapeake Bagel Bakery, Einstein Bagels... they all need a bitch slapping.
The bagel cafe, AFAICT, isn't a chain. It's a mom & pop type place, and it shows. The service is okay, and I haven't run into anyone who has annoyed me enough to keep me from going back.
The bagels are both large, well textured, and good tasting. Above all else, they are fresh. I have yet to have a bagel that feels/tastes like its been sitting around for more than a few hours. I love the wide variety of sandwich concoctions they have available. The chicken soup w/ matzoh balls is okay for not being made on the top of my stove. :)
They have most excellent OJ.
There aren't a lot of tables inside the cafe, so on nice days (70-75 degrees & sunny), it's a real treat to camp out on one of their outdoor tables for a while and enjoy a meal al fresco.
Like most places in Herndondez, parking is not an issue, and this place is easy to get to, and easily visible from the street.
I just got back from a late dinner, I'm full, and yet, after writing this, I'm drooling a little bit for a toasted poppyseed bagel with a shmear. -

What can I say other than I never knew breakfast could have been such an enthralling experience? In the midst of our apartment-hunting frenzy back in April we decided to head here on a Saturday morning, encouraged by the looks of the exterior as we had driven past it the day before doing some casual exploration. You wouldn't necessarily expect much in the way of good quality, service, or atmosphere from a strip mall tenant, but The Bagel Cafe truly proved skeptics like me wrong.
The three of us were promptly and efficiently provided with our order shortly after it had been taken, and we claimed an outdoor table to enjoy the gorgeous mid-morning weather. From our perch near the door we were amazed to see everyone cordially holding the door for one another with plenty of "Thank yous" to go around. A couple, presumably in their early-30s, sat at a table next to us with their two very well-behaved dogs, and after some idle banter between our tables as we fussed over the pampered pooches we were floored by how helpful this couple, complete strangers may I add, were when we asked if we could pick their brain a bit about desirable/undesirable areas to consider for relocation in Fairfax County. The couple was genuinely actively-engaged with us and gave us a hearty welcome to the region---one I won't soon forget, especially since I'll be auditing the woman's company! :-)
Beyond the uber-friendly and amicable atmosphere I suppose I should probably also mention that the food was second-to-none. I normally only eat a true home-cooked breakfast about once per month, if I'm lucky, so it's a REAL TREAT to be provided with some good cooking at that time of the morning for a welcome change of pace. As I reference in my Clyde's review I wish I had discovered Yelp sooner as I can't quite recall what we had all ordered, but I remember we all had clean trays! :-P
I can't wait to scope this place out again! -

Preface/background: I eat more than average in terms of quantity (I've eaten 2 Chipotle Burritos in one sitting) but appreciate quality and am always looking for a great deal.
Came here on the basis of other yelp reviews. The best thing that I like about this place is that the ingredients taste fresh. I've only been twice, but both times I've ordered the grilled chicken bagel with lettuce, tomato, onions, sprouts, cucumbers, and mustard. It is good. Not too salty, not too bland. I eat it and I feel good. It also comes with your choice of a side; I chose a fruit salad. It's about a fistful of assorted fruits. And at about $6.38, it's not a bad deal.
Quantity-wise, it is an acceptable lunch, but I could definitely eat two to fill myself up.
Also, if you're trying to find it, It's pretty much at the corner of Elden and Herndon Parkway, in the green colored shopping center.
Overall, a solid place, would probably come back for lunch again. -

I've been in love with this spot for 10+ years and always tell folks about it when they ask for something quick in the area.
I've yet to have a bad experience with the staff or with the food in the time I've been going there and whenever I take somebody they're surprised how good it is.

This place has been around quite a long time and I feel ashamed I have not tried it sooner. Their Everything bagels are the best in NOVA, and they make their own cream cheese (their plain is superb).
The second surprise I received was they serve superb coffee by Panache. The blend of choice I love here is Old Town Blend. Absolutely incredible, and maybe even better than their great bagels. I have now been back a couple times, and I think this will become a ritual hangout for me every weekend. -

Perfect. We found this place through yelp and really enjoyed it. My husband got olive cream cheese on an everything bagel and I got a cinnamon raisin bagel with vanilla raisin cream cheese. The selection of tea bags was pretty good. I had a nice jasmine green tea. He said the coffee was pretty good.

I've been here several times since my first review. And I gotta say, for me this is now my go-to breakfast spot in Herndon and Reston. I never liked their omelettes but LOVE their ham, egg, and cheese on toasted bagel. So extra star for superb bagel breakfast sandwiches and for their different cream cheese options. Oh the joys of the locals only Bagel Cafe!
After discovering the Bagel Cafe a few years ago, I would never step foot inside Einstein's Bagel every again. This place knows bagels and more importantly CREAM CHEESE. They have an exciting and extensive selection of cream cheese to chose from and their lunch menu is great too.
I either get a bagel with cream cheese or the breakfast platter of the day, which feeds both my mom and I. Seating indoors or outdoors and this place is buzzing especially on the weekends, but that's only cause the secret is out. This place rocks! -

This is my fav place to go to on my way home for lunch occasionally. I usually call my order in and it's ready within minutes by the time I get there...anyway, I get one of two things either the Chicken Ceaser Salad Wrap with dressing on the side (key b/c if they put it in the wrap it's just too much, believe me)...you get a side salad item also and I usually get a fruit cup. Sooo good, and a great lunch for only $6.27. I also like their chicken salad on an everything bagel. This place has it all though, freshly baked bagels, pastries and cookies, salads, sandwiches and wraps. You really can't go wrong with bagel cafe and they do VERY well, all around!
