Team Danger checked out the hot springs over Memorial Day weekend. We consider ourselves enthusiasts of fine relaxation areas worldwide, and Bagby did not disappoint. Easy to find, copious camping opportunities, great facilities. As with any free, public hot spring, there are going to be people who feel they run the place, but it is what it is. Overall, great time, excellent views, and we're going back. Recommend off times if you don't feel like waiting. We did the single community tub just up from the main bath house. Have fun!

The hike was pretty easy, about 1.5 miles in and the same back out. Lots of little bridges to cover. We went on a clear December day and it was perfect.
We did see some old man bare butt and older lady topless in the open air tubs, but nothing to bad. I understand going nude in the private tubs..but kids come up here. I don't really understand wanting to let it all hang out in front of an all ages crowd, but suit (or not) yourself.
We got the big tub with a hot and cold option so we didn't have to scrap for cold water.
Also, it was nice and clean when we came. Everyone was behaving themselves. -

I came here over the weekend to enjoy a rare sunny day. The hot springs is a 1.5 mile hike from the parking lot. The trail is well maintained and it's an easy with a winding river to the side of it. There are beautiful trees and bridges during your hike to the hot springs. However, the area where the spring is has tons of litter, graffiti, bottles, beer cans, used candles and other dirty trash. This place has not been well maintained at all. I was very disappointed. Bagby Springs has recently been taken over by a private company so it will no longer be free. This might help with maintenance issues in the future but I wouldn't recommend going there unless you're ok with bathing in a dirty, foul smelling environment.

One of the few truly great and free experiences in Oregon. However, on that note, it's unfortunate that it may a casualty of the Tragedy of the Commons. Meaning-IF YOU PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT. It's called personal responsibility. In fact, Bagby is at risk of becoming privatized because the volunteers can't keep up with cleaning up all the trash.
Follow the directions on the link to get there. I would recommend getting there before 5pm or after 8pm, it can get quite busy at times. This is especially true in the warmer months and on weekends.
Parking is $5, just grab an envelope near the Bagby welcoming sign, fill it out, and deposit your $5. They check at times to see if people have paid. Also, this is your only chance to use the restroom before you get to the outhouse at the actual Bagby springs.
The walk is beautiful, it's about 1.5 miles. I would highly recommend bringing a head lantern (Petzl), lots of water, and a bag to pick up your trash. The bath house consist of separate rooms, each with walls and doors. Just make sure to plug the bath (yeah, took me a while to figure it out completely) and fill the bucket with the cold water from the well, so you can cool down the water.
Right next to the bath house are the tubs, they are circular and consist of two 2 person tubs and two 5 person tubs. The tubs are clothing optional and are quite relaxing. Just be careful not to cut your foot on the metal plug at the bottom of the tubs. Enjoy responsibly! -

It makes me mad how people litter so terribly in this place. We were a tourists in the area. Our image of Oregon as a nature-loving state just shattered down to the ground. Who are these people who litter so much? What we saw was inconceivable. What kind of education do these people receive? I can't imagine people coming all the way into this deep recess of a national forest to bring on so much rubbish. Oregon, what's wrong with you?
And the scribbles on the walls ...so unsavory ... "Fuck" was one word I remember .... certainly families with children will not feel too comfortable to come here, in spite of the wonderful things that are here kids would really enjoy all thanks to a few mindless individuals' taking over this place as their preferred location for copulation after dark. My 11 yo enjoyed the hot water though -- he probably wasn't paying much attention busy playing with hot water.
I really want to give five stars because this would be a Great, Great, Great place for the public and families to enjoy .... if it were not for the filth some people leave there.
The hike is beautiful, lots of really tall trees, and the wooden tubs are excellent, and seeping into the hot natural spring water would a truly heavenly experience .................. IF it were not for all the garbage and stupid scribbles people leave here. It would be so nice to come here at night looking up into the sky under the stars, if we could be sure of safety in the area after dark.
We went there early in the morning around 8 am, in the mid August, and it was so nice to just being able to take the bath (we brought the swimsuits) outdoor -- or it would have been, if it were not for .... At 8 am, there were already some people before us. On our way to get there, one man was already on the way out, with a whole big bag of garbage. That we arrived soon after this discerning gentleman picked up stuff and STILL found a disaster there fills me with anger and sadness.
The whole place would be such a wonderful place .... if it were not for the mountains of garbage people leave.
Empty cans, water and shampoo bottles, broken soap pieces, wet dirty clothes (T-shirt, socks, etc.), used candles, grapes and carrots (IN the tub -- ugh), bread crumbs, some other food, and who knows what else. Horrible.
We took a bath in an open area because individual rooms were just so catastrophic in its accumulation of rubbish. It's a good idea to bring your swimsuit so you can bath in the open area.
In a separate compost bathroom, but the only toilet seat there had someone's FECES on there. Disgusting. I see that a lot of people just take toilet paper from there to take care of their business in the woods nearby, because I saw a lot of toilet papers on the ground --- it is one thing to poop on the toilet seat and not cleaning it (which is totally unacceptable) but it is also totally despIcable to litter with your used toilet paper soaked in your urine.
A ranger came to check, but what can he do alone facing this MOUNTAIN of trash?
The only saving grace is the trash bags offered at the trail head, suggesting people to pick up trash as they go in and out -- it was not there early in the morning when we entered the trail -- probably the ranger we met at the bathhouse put it there, we saw it on the way out.
But, I really think, These bags should not be necessary. People should know better. What are their frackin' problems?!
The two dumpsters at the trailhead was OVERFLOWING with trash. I have to ask, what's really wrong with these people? Have you ever heard about " LEAVE NO TRACE"?!?!?! Take everything you bring home, compost and recycle ..... Please!!!!!!!
In my opinion, the state of Oregon or the township should reinforce a law to give fines of $1,000 for littering like they do around Yosemite Park in California. Use the revenue to update and maintain the bathhouse facility. The trash really ruins the whole area -- and the bathroom --- This would be a wonderful place if it were not the idiocy that goes on! -

This place could be five stars if people picked up after themselves after coming here. Its obvious that large groups of people throw huge parties and trash the place. The springs are gorgeous and the warm water is piped into these wooden bathtubs. The tubs vary between one-person and multi-person hot-tub style. This place needs a major clean up before I really come back here.

Terrible. Imagine using a hot tub in some cheap hotel's designated hookup spot, now add months worth of crushed beer cans and snack wrappers. It was slimy, filthy, and graffitied. I can't see why it got such good reviews. For an hour and a half drive and a 1.5 mile walk, it was most disappointing. If you want a good cleansing hot water experience, try a spa or sauna.

Other than the hike to get to it, gotta say we were a little disappointed with this place. A little too much work to keep having to get out and fill up the cold buckets. Also our tub seemed to leak and wouldn't ever completely fill up. Would be nice too if people would learn to clean up after themselves. I know lighting candles is nice, but be considerate and don't leave a bunch of melted wax all over the place.

What an awsome experience! Wake up and get on the road, driving through huge green valleys with a snow capped Mount Hood in the distance. It was raining(go figure), with fog up in the valleys. We arrived to the parking lot and put our rain gear on and hiked 2 miles in the rain to get to the tubs.We passed a beautiful rushing river and got to hang at a 50 foot waterfall. When we got to the tub, it had a small roof over us, so it was raining all around us(so nice). The water was cleansing and hot, It really made me feel as if I was being healed in some way. We had a picnic of apples and Brie and a pineapple. Another couple came to share the bath(not that I'm in a couple were friends), and I think they were a little weirded out that we were nude, but we made fast friends and they were having Brie and pineapple with us in no time! When you start to get too hot you just fill up a bucket with cold spring water and pour it all over yourself and jump back in! We spent 3 hours in the tub. Hiked out of there back to the car. I highly suggest a visit here.
Listed in: Portland,OR for the weekend
