Not easy to find coffee shops that serve Kona Coffee in San Diego

PARKING: easy.  Plenty of space in the shopping center.

PRICE: on point.  My 16 oz. Dark Chocolate Mocha was $3.75 exactly.  During Girl Scout cookie-season, they offer a 'Girl Scout Mint Cookie' blended coffee that is delicious.

QUALITY:  perfectly brewed coffee, unlike SBUX where I've experienced 'gritty' coffee in more than one location.  Various pastries available here, too.

SEATING: there are a couple of tables inside, as well as a coffee table surrounded by 2 cushioned seats.  There's also a patio with several chairs and umbrellas, so if you want to enjoy the sunshine there's that option, too.

SERVICE: very friendly.  They guy at the register saw a book in my hand as I was paying and recommended another title I might be interested in.  Knowledgable with coffee and books?  Great!

    Likes:

    1. Service
    2. You can order sandwiches and salads at the drive through.
    3. They have the most variety of sugar free syrups that I have yet to find anywhere.
    4. They are about two miles from my place.
    5. I have never had to wait in line, even on a Sunday morning.

    Dislikes:

    1. Their decaf coffee is bad and watered down. Even when I ask for decaf espresso, I have to ask for at least two additional shots to make it taste like coffee.
    2. Each time I've gone, I've had to repeat my order very slowly, and they've still managed to get it wrong on more than one occasion. Doesn't anyone know what a Cafe Misto/Cafe au lait is??
    3. Though I haven't had to wait in line, as mentioned above, it still has taken them several minutes to make my drink. Whereas other places make it quickly.

If their coffee tasted better and they were able to get my order right each time I went, I would probably rate the place 5 stars. I stopped going due to the taste of the coffee.

I may have found a new coffee place! I like their list of coffee to choose from. All sounded really good...I just couldn't try them all at once. I guess this is an excise for me to go back!

I got their macaroon iced coffee. It has two shots of espressos and coconut and vanilla flavored syrups. Towards the end of my drink, i found out that the ice are made with coffee! i love it! this way it won't water down my iced coffee.

If you're a coconut lover, this one is for you!

I also like this place cuz it reminds me of Hawaii... I miss HI.

    Does taste pretty bad a**...

    Got the ice-blended snickerlicious.
16 oz for $4.65 is kinda steep but it sure beats the normal Starbucks routine.

Give them a try just once and when you want something different, this is the place to go.

I like how they have a drive-thru and i got my drink in less than 2 minutes.

If they sold the same drink for around $3, I would give them a solid 5 stars!

My mama just introduced me to this place a week ago and I love it!  It's hidden in the little plaza and I kept missing the entrance to the drive-thru.  This place reminds of a coffee shop near my old university because of the unique flavors like tiramisu or dark chocolate and cherry that most places don't sell.

The drive-thru menu doesn't display the full menu but if you drive up to the window, they have a full-list of what you can order.  So far, my favorite is the dark chocolate and raspberry.  Also, everything has Hawaiian inspired names.  It's a little pricier than Starbucks but they also have more options.

Honestly, if I could give 4.5 stars here, I would.  This place is pretty awesome!  It's a unique concept that is well executed.  I hate that it's located in such a random place... OB, PB, MB, or North Park would probably be better suited to it's vibe.

I had a Chai Latte, which they make with non-fat milk (which is how I like them) unless you request differently.  It was tasty!  Made from a powder, but tasty!  My friend had an iced coffee of some kind, which he loved.  He got about half-way through his drink when I noticed the strange looking ice cubes.  They were large and BROWN!  But not to worry... they were made of frozen coffee!  Genius!  That way when your ice melts, your coffee doesn't get watered down!

The service was super friendly and efficient!  The decor is fun!  They even have keepsakes!  The prices are a little higher than Starbucks (but so is the quality).

My only complaint is they allow smoking on their patio... YUCK!  It was a gorgeous day and my friend and I were hanging out on the small patio right outside the door to the coffee shop, enjoying the sun, and the dude next to us lights up.  Gross.  If that hadn't happened, it would have definitely been 5 stars!

First of all, I love the name of this coffee shop.  I've only gotten a drink and bagel there, but it wasn't bad at all.  I forgot the name of my drink but it contained white chocolate and rasberry syrup, and you can never go wrong with those two mixed together.  My bagel was a pizza bagel with cream cheese (it sounds weird together, but believe me...it's good).

The girls that work there are super friendly and have always greeted me with a smile, which is a plus in my book.  A place with friendly staff deserves great reviews.

Woke up feeling bad ass, had to get some Bad Ass coffee.
The menu is overwhelming because everything looked delicious. I loved how there was a random little merchandise corner where you can buy T-shirts and stuffed animals. That was cute.

Anyway, the Baristas KNOW that their menu is huge and confusing, so they make suggestions, which is considerate of them. I settled for the hot Macaroon Latte, only with half the sweetness since I usually like my coffee black and bitter.

The coffee was incredibly delicious. They have various flavors that imitate different sweets, which I thought was creative.

The only con I may think of is the price-- It is quite expensive for coffee and their breakfast sandwich, which was mediocre.

Tip: Their coffees are more worth it than the food.

I have been coming here every month or so since this place has opened and two things have always been true -

    1. Mindnumbingly Slow Ass Service
    2. Bomb Ass Blendeds

Today, Bad Ass Coffee, one shining superstar of an employee finally made me the happiest customer ever!  Aspen was polite, attentive, and very quick.  She took my money, gave me change and had a drink in my hand in just a couple of minutes.  It was quicker than most of my starbucks stops and I was super stoked.

She also had a moment to hand me a menu and let me know there were other flavors I could get mixed in with my blended and if I liked the Bad Ass Mocha I would probably like this other flavor with Irish Cream in it!  yum. High Five Aspen!

Can't review this place without mentioning.  THESE ARE THE BEST BLENDEDS EVER.  Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Wha?!?!  They have nothing on Bad Ass Blendeds. They are creamy, never icy since they use some crazy machine and since they use Kona coffee, you do not lose the coffee flavor in the iced drink!  So amazing and on a hot day i just can't live without these.

Amazeballs -  Bad Ass Mocha Blended (or any of the other dozen or so flavors of blendeds) & DRIVE THRU

Bummer - Though this time was amazing I will still wince at the possibility of waiting 8 minutes for a drink next time I get a craving for a blended.

I've been here twice now and both times were through the drive-thru.  All the baristas were very nice and helpful.  I really liked the drinks here.  I tried the Bad Ass Mocha and the Lava Java mocha.  The drinks come pretty sweet here so no need to add sweetener of any sort.  I also tried a breakfast bagel and it was yummy.  Thanks!

Two experiences here, and I can say that one was pretty good, and one was not so good...

My husband got the menehune (sp) mocha the first time we went, and it was pretty good... I got it the second time... Not so good! Weird!

The iced coffee & italian sodas are pretty standard. Interesting drive-thru, but really hard to hear on the speaker system.

Overall, we might come back. We don't live in the area, so it definitely won't be a regular place for us :)

I'm sadly yet another American who's over-caffeinated and under stimulated.  I need my morning coffee to wake up, my mid-afternoon coffee to stay awake, my iced coffee when its hot and my hot coffee when its cold.  I need my coffee so much that I have that pretentious "Gold" card from that pretentious place with the mermaid on the label.

I was excited when a new Coffee Shop opened up in PQ and I was even more excited when it had an edgy new name AND a drive-thru.  I was lucky enough to find a favorite the first time and have yet to deviate.  I always get the Bad Ass Mocha - yeah, I know original, huh?  I like it better hot than I like the iced version though.

Service is always friendly, the coffee is always consistant and delicious, and I always get my energy buzz.  The coffee here is also a little stronger than the other places so I can order a smaller size & get the same effect.  They offer sugar free versions of their syrups, which is nice because I'm always on some sort of low-carb diet to help my waist line.

It was kind of fun ordering such a "naughty" named coffee too.  I'm a mom and have to constantly watch my normal potty mouth .  Being able to say ASS while I get my caffeine fix sends shivers down my spine.

Yeah, it was all fun and games until my 7 year old asked me for a "Bad Ass glass of milk".  Nice.

I really enjoy Bad Ass Coffee. Let me count the reasons...

    1) The name is great!
    2) The Bad Ass Mocha lives up to it's name.
    3) They have a drive-thru.
    4) The staff is very friendly.
    5) They have a decent amount of space inside the coffee house as well as a patio.
    6) They offer free WI-FI.
    7) Did I mention the cool name?

    Enough said.

I live in PQ and have been to bad ass a few times ( usually when the drive thru at the Starbucks is wrapped around IHOP ).  I want nothing more than to replace my daily visit to Starbucks with Bad Ass and support the local businessman instead of Starbucks.  I was very excited when it opened, even taking my son to the grand opening where they had games for kids , balloons and free coffee.  The prices are about the same and the coffee..... well...... I am still visiting Starbucks on a daily basis

Haole Memehune (was good, but it wasn't mm, mm, good.  I've had other blended drinks that make me want more.  This drink was just good enough.

I asked one gal if they had a frequent buyers card and another gal said the only option/alternative was if you bought a $25 gc, you'd  get a free drink.

I bought into that deal, if that's what it was and now I'm going through buyer's remorse bc #1 I hadn't been there in awhile and just happened to go today bc I saw someone with a BA blended drink this morning and #2 it's not
healthy so now I think I will just give it to my brother for his birthday on Monday.

I've had other drinks there, but none that scream for me to come back immediately for another.

When they had Java Kai in Poway, I loved their Akala - Strawberry Raspberry Sorbet, chocolate, strawberries & a hint of Mint.  It tasted like a chocolate covered strawberry.  Now that, I crave!

When Bad Ass was first under construction, I was really excited because I was hoping it would be a cool, relaxing place to grade (I'm a high school English teacher always looking for a comfy place to work). I love Starbucks but the one closest to Bad Ass is always so crowded, so this looked promising.

I was really disappointed. Granted, I don't drink coffee and prefer tea, but my favorite Chai is actually more expensive here than at Starbucks and they use a powder for their Chair, which I think is criminal. Plus, the staff was completely distracted talking inappropriately with each other and the furniture was wicked uncomfortable. I only spent about fifteen minutes there before I gave up, threw away my Chai, went to Starbucks and did my grading.

In fairness to Bad Ass, I've only been there for the coffee so I can not base my review on anything else.

I have to say what a great name for a coffee shop however the coffee doesn't live up to the name. The price compares to others in the area, the staff seems friendly enough but a little slow.

Again, not knocking it so much but it's not worth my drive out of the way when I can get the same thing closer to my location.

When it comes to coffee and me, there are two things:

    1) I love it!
    2) I don't discriminate. I enjoy free samples at the grocery store as much as gourmet coffee

To be honest, I don't come here with the intention of grabbing a regular cup of joe - it's more like "Screw calories today, I'm feeling a little indulgent".  Good thing they have sugar-free options.  Large variety of drinks on their menu, but all the ones I've had tasted pretty similar because that Kona coffee taste just overpowers everything else.  But hey. if you want to add a little irish cream, english toffee or any other syrup they have then you go on with your badass self.

I've never tried their hot drinks but I will say that I prefer their drinks blended rather than iced, I just think the consistency helps mellow out the sweetness, which is a little much.  The workers are always friendly & the drive-thru is a plus.

    Docking 2 stars because:

    1) Drinks are on the pricier side
    2) I don't even think my sweet tooth could handle it more than once a week

Not an everyday coffee joint for me but I'll stop by to change up my coffee routine every once in a while

All I can say is that I am so glad that I was introduced to this place. I had passed this place many times but had never stopped in to check it out. Why try a new place when I know exactly what I like to get at Starbucks?? well i was wrong.

First off, the staff is super friendly and very nice. They are a small place so you feel welcomed when you walk in. Don't worry.. there is a drive thru for those of us that love the comfort of the car. They have a huge selection of coffee drinks and i have tried a few and all have been great. I have had the snickerlicious and it is yummy. I also tried this vanilla Carmel latte which was almost The perfect drink for me. They also have a variety of baked goods as well as sandwiches and such inside. I also had the opportunity of seeing the oatmeal and it actually looks good (and this is coming from some one that hates oat meal because it is mushy). They had actual oats and nuts in there. Who knows maybe if I am feeling adventurous one day I will give it a try.  Also it is a good place to just check out. The decorations inside are really cute.

Coffee was bad. Tasted like ass.

Seriously, I was really excited to find this place, because the neighborhood (RP) is so depressingly un-funky and boring, that *anyplace* that's not a dry-cleaners or Subway, or super-conservative church, is welcome. AND it's right on my way to/from work. AND it's got a drive-thru and it's not Starbucks.

Workers were friendly enough but didn't seem very organized, similar to what others have said. They were closing at 7:30 pm, which is just a damned inconvenient time to close. In that enighborhood, an indie coffee shop that stays open till 11 or 12 would clean up.

Place seemed clean and was pretty bright and cheery, even if it seemed pretty pre-fab and played the Hawaii theme so hard that it made me never want to go there.

    Coffee was too expensive.

BUT the kicker: coffee had such strong rancidity tones that all I could smell was rancidity even before I picked up the cup! Apparently no one has told them that they need to wash out everything that touches beans, to get the oils off. Anyone who said this coffee is good either can't taste coffee, or actually got one of those ice-cream sundae drinks that is seasoned with coffee. I actually threw my cup away -- couldn't drink more than 1/3 of the cup -- which believe me is like a meth-head throwing away half of his crystals. THAT bad.

I am giving 2 stars because (1) I got there 10 min to closing, and maybe it was just the worst old coffee they would ever serve, so it was a one-off thing; (2) I didn't get the kona, and maybe that's better, but damn it was pricey.

I will give this place 1 more try. I the coffee is anywhere near that bad I'll be down-rating to 1 star.

Seriously, the owners should read Yelp, before this place goes the way of so many independent businesses in this area. There was a place, Kona Cafe, further down on Poway Rd. that closed a few years back. A shame: they were really nice and ACTUALLY had quite good coffee; it was also overpriced but not as bad as this place.

    Decent coffee.  Good fast service.

But they use a foam insulator on their cups (not earth friendly!) and $1.60 for a small cup of Kona black is kind of on the pricey side, methinks.

I didn't try any of the blended drinks.  I have a VitaMix blender at home so usually I'll whip up something at home if I'm in the mood for one, it saves me money in the long run.  But if I'm in the mood for coffee again on the go, I might stop by.  But this time I'll see if they'll just pour the coffee into my refillable mug so that I don't get that twinge of guilt.

Just dropped of the little one at school and wanted to get a good cup of caffeine in our system.  We didn't feel like availing of the omnipresent sip of Starbucks and remembered passing a BADASS coffee.  What a name for a coffee shop.  The feel is island life.  Hawaiian grown coffee beans and a good variety of choices of drinks and some food options.  We got the hot snickerlicious and the cold snickerlicious.  They were both good.  The services was good.  I think the FELLAS would like this coffee shop due to the staff.

This is a chain from Hawaii and a nice new option for coffee in the north county/PQ neighborhood (with a drive through- Yaye!)

This business has been open for a about a month and the incentive for us to try it was a group of people who were complaining about the name.  I was surprised that anyone would object to the name or find it offensive since it clearly has a picture of an "ass" (AKA donkey) in the really fun logo.

Today we had a regular latte, a snickerlicious latte  and a toffee latte.

My daughter said the snickerlicious was delicious and you could taste the hazelnut.   The hub thought the toffee was a bit sweet, but enjoyed it. My latte was perfect.  They have a really large variety of tasty options.

The decor looked like a fun Hawaiian theme from the car. (Did I mention how awesome it was to drive through :)

When I first saw one star reviews pop up onto Yelp for this place I was amused and promised myself to visit.  Some 0/0's made this coffee shop out to be the biggest threat to children growing up in their formative youth.  I suppose if I had a rug rat running around too I'd be hypersensitive to their safety but I can think of so many other worse things in this world that will warp their minds.

Unfortunately, in reality Bad Ass Coffee isn't very salacious.  No posters of Vida Guerra staring over her shoulder at me with a come hither index finger up to the lips.  No hefty pairs struggling with thong material on the logo.  Just an Eeyore looking burro on the logo.  My drive through order was quite innocuous.  The baristas were fully and conservatively attired, friendly, courteous and quick.  The large frozen blended Lava Java Mocha - dark choc. and hazelnut was average and a little pricey - $5.75.

When I do come back, it'll probably be for some whole bean Kona.  They're really easy to get to from the 56 and 15.

Me and my girlfriend decided to grab some coffee here. We heard news of them on The Musubi Map website. I ordered the Caramel Wave and my girl got a Mocha something.

After about 6 people and literally 30 minutes later, I get mine. There were 3 people working there. All were very nice and polite, but I think they should really have a system of making their coffee. The first time I asked them if my coffee was done they said they are making it. I noticed that they mixed up a drive thru order with mine and decided to make the other persons drink first... 15 mins waiting. Then I asked again, because I noticed my drink sitting on the counter, and they told me that they had to make more whip cream... 25 mins waiting.

I finally got my drink and was 10 minutes late to my drumming practice. The coffee was okay, nothing special. Nice looking spot and the people working there were friendly and really trying to get things done, but I don't think I'll be going back there anytime soon.

They have a bunch of drinks to chose from and they're all good.  I get the feeling that the young staff is still getting the hang of working their first jobs. There always seems to be a problem with keying in the right drink codes into the register. Oh well, it seems to works out in my favor most of the time.

I would say that this is more of a young adult  "hang out", then a serious coffee shop. Tween music playing in the background,  kids ordering drinks, kids serving drinks. It's all good. I'll just go through the drive-thru next time.

If we aren't at Starbucks we go Bad Ass. If they were closer it would be 50/50. The specialty drinks are tasty. Sign up for the newsletter to get coupons for drinks. Fans of the coffee cake too. Another interesting item is the coffee ice they use for cold drinks. Definitely try them out if you haven't yet.

I ordered the ICED SNICKERLICIOUS 16oz for $3.50 the price isn't bad

but can't really compare to the current happy hour deal at Starbucks (50% off Fraps) - too bad it's only temporary....

ok so back to BAD ASS... it's cool that this place has a drive thru but other than that my drink was kinda funky.... how do I describe it... I guess... grainy?

besides the texture.. the coffee or whip cream.. what ever was in that drink totally gave me a major stomach ache...

it was definitely Bad...for my.... Ass.

I chose this place because it was freezing, and I didn't want to get out of the car. I also enjoy the name.

I got a vanilla caramel, warm. It was good, and I enjoyed it.
Not as light as I would have liked, but I enjoyed it.
    Would I return? Yes.

Pros: Good Coffee - Most important, Comfy atmosphere and decent prices...not cheap, just decent. Free Wifi.  Decent pastry selection. The name says it all man...c'mon! I probably wouldn't even come here if it was called "Mochas of Hawaii". They got me in the door and I'm glad I stopped in..

    Cons: None yet...but I haven't tried everything.

P.S. People saying they won't go in b/c of the name are probably your neighbors...and they're probably pedophiles. Go figure?

Probably the yummiest Kona Koffee I've ever had! I go with the Kreme de Kona via the drive-thru. Yes people there is a drive-thru in this place which makes it convenient in the morning to get a cup and continue to work.

The staff is really nice and they make sure you have your order correct.

On Mondays and Wednesdays they have open mic night so if you're into that thing you should check it out.

Tip: Fill the tip jar in the drive-thru.

I like this place a lot more than Starbucks simply because their coffee is the main ingredient rather than sugar!  My BF and I have visited several times now.  The staff is quirky and friendly.

There are a few flavors I've tried that taste nothing like the name implies, and wade over to the bitter side, but I'm not sure whether it's just the person blending it, or if the drink was intended to leave a strange after taste. Hmm...

Besides, who doesn't want to show up at work and offer some "bad ass coffee" to co-workers just to watch as the expression on their faces change?!  I'll admit the name had me interested, but the coffee's got me comin' back.

Oh, one last thing...upon my first visit, before their Grand opening, I was very happy to discover that they had a drive thru! The girl behind the counter wasn't very surprised at my elation; apparently, lots of other people had the same reaction.  I have yet to use it though..ha!

OK, so unfortunately, the Rancho Penasquitos and Poway area is not known for it's abundance of coffee houses. In fact, when Hot Java closed down a couple of years ago, the indie coffee house scene in the area was officially dead. Sure, there's Cappuccino Cottage in Poway, but it's a drive-thru shack that serves terrible coffee.

A couple of months ago, I noticed a building being remodeled. I thought it would make a great coffee house because it had a drive-thru and there were no coffee houses in the immediate area. Low and behold, a sign appeared one day that read Bad Ass Coffee! I was so excited and couldn't wait for it to open. The day finally came last week and I made my way over to meet a friend.

The place is light and airy. It's got a good amount of seating inside and a few outdoor tables. The menu is easy to read and includes some lunch offerings. The day I went, they were out of ham and turkey so I settled for a Chicken Salad Sandwich. Wow! What a great sandwich. I was very pleasantly surprised at the tastiness of it.

The menu features all sorts of coffee drinks that you'd expect from a coffee house including some fun ones like a Snickers blended mocha. I opted for my good ole stand-by: an iced mocha with a twist - black and white chocloate. I grabbed a large one on my first visit. It was good, but with a smidge too much chocoate. I'll try a regular one next time.

They have a tv or two going and some comfy seating in the corner to use for chilling. They also have some retail space mainly for take home beans featuring a variety of Hawaiian and other blends.

Overall, this is a very welcome addition to the PQ area, even with the off color name.

There were 3 people working and it was really slow to make my BA Mocha, a dark/milk chocolate mix. The people were friendly and helpful though. It is nice that there's a drive thru.

They provided free samples of their Kona but the paper sample cups adulterated the taste so it tasted like paper.

It's really expensive for medicore kona coffee. A 20oz of 100% Kona was about $4.25 and a 20oz BA mocha was about $4.50. I wasn't impressed with the BA mocha.
