Backstube Austrian is wonderful!
My dear friend and I tried it for the first time. I love the welcoming courtyard type setting and the inside is just as nice. My friend tried the Walnut Strudel-- her favorite, and I myself had my favorite a pecan pie. They are delicious.
We found a super get away. Try their Iced Coffee. Yum. -

Until 5th Street Bakehouse nd Kurmblz opened, Backstube was one of a couple decent bakeries in the area. The baked goods are usually fresh. I like the coffee as well. I don't eat here enough to make recommendations for specific items.
The service is usually always pretty good, too. Other places could take a cue from the good service here. -

I have been here twice. The first time I enjoyed a leisurely cup of peppermint tea and some sort of scrumptious horseshoe shaped pastry dusted with crack. It was pretty much the best thing ever. The second time, unfortunately, there were no seats. So, I got a large peppermint tea to go and again paired it with a pastry (dusted with crack - of course). Both experiences have been lovely. The customer service is good. The pastries are delicious. I am open to a new little cafe near Mayberry Landing. I normally go to Walden's Coffee House, but they just aren't making the cut like they used to. Where else in Reno can you go and get a large cup of tea and a delectable pastry for $1.75?? On a side note, I sat in the very far corner of the cafe and was able to get some stranger's wifi. :)

We were in Reno for a friend's birthday and his wife wanted to order a birthday cake for him. His favorite is Boston Creme Pie which is surprisingly hard to find at most bakeries. Luckily for us, Backstube was more than happy to do a special order and even made suggestions on how to modify the cake appropriately to mirror a Boston Creme Pie!
We went to pick it up and the bakery is located in this super cute little strip mall. Their entire bakery case is amazing. My girlfriends and I ordered a few croissants to split for breakfast (the ham and cheese, the cheese and raisin, and the chocolate) and coffee. Divine. The lady behind the counter was sweet as can be and Franz is ridiculously nice and helpful.
I am so sad that there is nothing like this place in Sacramento. This is the type of place I would love to come with girlfriends for dessert and coffee and a good chat; or a good place to study/do work. The ambiance is so warm and comforting.
Franz, PLEASE open up a shop in Sacramento!! -

They have the best croissant in Reno. It is flaky on the outside, moist and tender on the inside with scrumptious butter flavor. Amazing. My latte was good. I really enjoyed the outside seating and the location. Service was fast and friendly.
The cakes look amazing and what you would expect from an exceptional bakery. I think I will be ordering one for my next special occasion. -

The strawberry tarts here are absolute, glorious perfection. The shell is lined with bittersweet chocolate and filled with cool creme patissiere, which is then topped with strawberries and glazed with apricot preserves.
The space is sweet and intimate, and there are an array of other goodies if strawberry tarts aren't your thing: pecan loaves, strudel, and palmiers, to name a few. And don't let Josef's fool you: Franz makes petit fours too. -

Wonderful coffee and pastries! Wish I was on that side of town more often to come by.

We live not far from here and so we go often for lunch and for baked goods and they do an excellent job. It's a small place but everything is good- even their very simple rolls taste delicious.
My favorite are the desserts (the lemon tart, cream puffs, apple strudel, etc.) and we have ordered pies from them for every holiday - they are so good and the price is good- very inexpensive for the high quality you get. The staff are also really friendly and helpful.
Over the summer they offered gelato and it was excellent- very tasty and perfect for the summer. -

My little toddler points at anything and everything that she wants. When she really wants something she does the double point with both hands. As soon as we walked into the Backstube to buy my husband a birthday cake, both of her little hands were flying around in the double point. She wanted e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. I don't blame her one bit, because everything looked gorgeous and ridiculously tempting.
Trying to decide on a single cake was far more difficult than I expected. I really wanted a black forest cake, but my husband doesn't really like it, so I narrowed it down to a chocolate mousse cake described as light and airy and a chocolate raspberry cake covered in ganache described as rich and decadent. Light and airy or rich and decadent? I honestly couldn't decide and Beatrix was no help, she pointed at both. In the end, the light and airy chocolate mousse cake won out and it was divine. Light and airy, yes, but it was also had so much rich chocolate flavor. Perfect for a hot July birthday.
I would have liked to indulge in one of every cookie, and Beatrix was certainly encouraging it, but instead we limited ourselves to one heart shaped cookie with apricot and raspberry preserves. The cookie itself had a nice almond flavor and was crisp and buttery and so delicious.
The service was also excellent. The woman who helped me added a white chocolate heart to the top of the cake so she could write Happy Birthday on it, and she also helped me to my car because my hands were full.
I look forward to returning soon. Maybe to have lunch at their very nice outdoor seating. -

Best pastries around, hands down. I think the other Austrian bakery in town gets more attention than Franz's b/c it is more centrally located (but otherwise completely inferior). Luckily, Franz's is right in my neighborhood. You'll notice I call it Franz's b/c that's what it is -- a bakery run by an actual Austrian guy named Franz.
I actually go here for lunch sometimes w/o getting any sweets. They do a FANTASTIC chicken salad sandwich on a croissant with raspberries. It really is perfect: creamy, crunchy, buttery and little bit of sour from the berries. They do have a small menu, but everything on it is fresh and just right. Try the goulash!
Coffee is excellent too: besides Newman's (see my review), this is the only other place that can execute the concept of a cappuccino, and understand how that is very different from a latte. Must be that European element they have going on here.
Service: friendly and helpful. You order at the counter and they bring it to your table. I love how they use painted plates for the food -- it makes it look even better and somehow more special than if it were served on plain white plates. The attention to detail is prevalent throughout.
Atmosphere: small, colorful and European. I love it! This bakery draws a lot of bicyclists on the weekends. Mostly a Caughlin Ranch boomer-type crowd during the week. Great place for a Saturday lunch; we go all the time.
And saving the best for last: the pastries. The cakes are the best around. I recommend the chocolate raspberry. In fact, I'm making fiancee buy me one for my next birthday. You can't go wrong with any of the pastries you get here, either. The cream is phenomenal in the eclairs and Napoleons. My favorite is the apple pastry-tart thing with spiced apples and a vanilla custard. It's so decadent.
Franz is in there almost every morning making his goods and his hands on approach keeps the quality very high. We are very lucky that he chose to set up shop in Reno. A + Highly recommend a visit.Listed in: Comfort food, Reno style

Gelato was perfect! Cappucino was great and the pastry couldn't have been better. I'm pretty excited to have found this place and will go back. The prices seemed really fair as well! I wish there were more places like this.

Franz's Backstube is as good as it gets. When compared to Josef's Viena - there is no comparison. Franz's wins every time! The food is great, the service is fast, and the staff are really attentive to your needs. I've always been warmly greeted, usually by Franz, with a smile. That's what I call great customer service! Franz typically has his apron on, is baking some delicious treat and still manages to take time to mingle with his guests.
The pastries at the store are simply delectable. Franz's also has great coffee and really good sandwiches for lunch. This bakery also did my wedding cake. My husband and I loved it and so did our guests. So much so there was nothing left! The pastry cream he uses is to die for and the variety of treats offered in the store are great too!
Stop by on the weekend, bring a paper, relax with a sweet treat and a nice latte. Franz's is just the thing you'll need to start your weekend! -

Ok, so one of my clients referred me here. I used to own my own deli, & very few have exceeded my expectations. Every time I tried to make it they were closed. Finally, I scored! I was told all the sandwiches are awesome. I read the menu and the sandwiches sounded fine a little boring I might add. So I went with the boring turkey and swiss on rye, I wanted to add onion, I was told firmly no. I also ordered for my significant other and his daughter. We had a picnic lunch that day....We all started eating our sandwiches OMG this was one of the best fresh simple sandwiches I have ever had. You do not need onions.

Solid lunch menu, lots of baked goods and gelato. I had the salami and swiss, with a raspberry napoleon. The two women working the counter could not have been nicer. Can't wait to go back. Be aware, you can't add a tip to credit card charges, so carry cash.

Had really good chicken salad sandwich there the other day. Good ingredients on their store made croissant with a few fresh berries in the sandwich - original and very tasty.
It was about $5.00 -

Although I did not have the pleasure eat a lot of pastries / baked items from this bakery, the few that I did get were just amazing. The great thing about this bakery is that the pastries are not TOO sweet or TOO much sugar or just in general 'too much' in your mouth. It is perfectly balanced between sweetness and yumminess.
I highly recommend any pecan / nuts related pastry because they're soo good and the cookies are amazingly crunchy but soft (I don't know how to describe it!)
Overall wonderful experience and I would love to go back again to eat some of the food :) -

I am happily the first to review this delicious, if hidden, gem of Reno. An Austrian bakery.. out here?!? YES! And it's fantastic. There lunch service, while simple, serves up deliciously fluffy and rich quiches in a variety of flavors (veggie too!). Or try the goulash. It's spicy and thick, with fresh cut potatoes and chunks of tender beef.
The greatest triumph of this place is their desert selection. Wonderfully wonderful cookies, cakes and pastries. Please, please, please try their strawberry cream cake- ambrosia! -

I give it four rather than five because I think it a bit pricy, but then maybe I am just behind the times. Still, it does remind me of little places one may go in Europe for a coffee and a goodie. That to me is a big plus.
Small, not too many places to sit but very clean. Friendly folks behind the counter. Every customer seemed be enjoying themselves. Seemed to me like a bunch of locals who are regulars.
I mostly agree with the other four and five star comments. -

I think I'm a Franz addict. I love their goulash so much it's painful and I make it a point to buy the girls at my work some macaroons when I can. The price isn't too much and they always take great care of me. You can't beat that!

I love this place. I live right up the hill on Mayberry and I come down and eat here whenever I get the urge. I love their croissants and their lunch special of soup and half of a sandwich. I even had the leek soup one day and although I am not a fan of leek, the soup was excellent. People are down to earth and not pretentious. If you are looking affordable deals stick with the croissant, the individual quiche and the half sandwich and soup deal. These will fill your tummy with not breaking the bank account. Sometimes I go there with 5 bucks and am amazed I still have enough for tip and a few left over in my pocket.

Located in a great little shopping center, in a real good part of town - I don't know why I've never been to Franz's Backstube before! It's a cute, funky little bakery, plenty of tables in their little place. I didn't have the pleasure of enjoying any of their wide variety of pastries though. I had an iced latte, Quiche Lorraine, and coffee gelatto - both coffee items I'd definitely go back for again, can't wait to try different flavors of gelatto. The quiche, however, had me wondering if it was store bought. All in all - quick, easy, good dining experience. Will be returning to try their delicious treats.

I think I decided this is my most fav bakery...even better then Josef's Vienna Bakery. The breakfast is better at Josef's but I like the baked goods here better. The selection is smaller but I think the quality is just a bit better. I like coming on weekends here after bike rides. Its a hang out for the local cycling bunch (muscles and shaved legs..yumm). Its a great place to have coffee and pastrie in the afternoon or morning....I might pass on th sandwiches though...

Excellent place to go for a light, quick breakfast. The staff is very friendly and offers suggestions. I usually get the fruit tart and poppy seed danish or fruit danish. Very yummy! I also get my birthday cake here each year. The giant fruit tart cake is to die for! Very delicious! And, yes, the macaroons are very yummy! I get a box for my mother-in-law every once in a while and can't help myself from stealing one before giving it to her.

Possibly my favorite food place in Reno. The strudel is great, but all the pastries are great. The sacre tort and linzer torte are awesome. The pastries are not overly sweetened but depend on really fresh ingredients to enhance the flavors. Last couple of visits, have tried the soups. The goulash is very good but surprisingly spicy (good thing). Last Sunday the special soup was spinach and mushroom and it was very rich and tasty. The soups come with a dinner roll and even that is excellent. Viennese coffees are also served. It is a special place to enjoy the sun on the patio while enjoying good coffee and great pastries, Can't really think of a negative, except I wish the pastries were calorie free (lol).

This is the real deal! Old world style, fine European pastries and quality to match! I would work here just to be surrounded by the food. The lunch offerings are great as well; and not too many places left where one can get goulash. Love it, love it, love it.

Review from Tracy S.
I've been looking forward to trying this bakery for a long time--maybe it was my high expectations that led to my disappointment. First of all, the atmosphere just didn't feel right to me. I couldn't tell if this was a place to eat breakfast or a place to have coffee. It's set up like a small restaurant, but their menu is extremely limited. Husband and I decided to just stick with baked goods and coffee. Except that it doesn't really feel like a coffee house, either...it lacks a certain cozy, stick-around-a-while vibe. Husband tried one of their small quiches, which was pretty small for the $4-plus dollars they charged, and he really liked it. I had a piece of strudel, which I found to be totally mediocre. The coffee was fine, but nothing spectacular. Overall, we had a solid three-star experience, and I wouldn't mind trying it again sometime, but seeing as Backstrube is located between Walden's and Emerald City Cafe--two places I much prefer--I probably won't be back.

Wow!! Truly European!! Great rolls, wonderful pastries and excellent coffee. The staff is very friendly and courteous and Franz will always check on you. Even a newspaper is there - so you can enjoy all the goodies while you read!
