I decided to stop in after reading reviews about their service and sandwiches and let me say, neither disappointed.
I had a Reuben wrap with a side salad with Tomato Balsamic Vinaigrette. The corn beef was succulent and cooked just right. The salad is what cost the restaurant a star, it was as Plain Jain as they come with a few pieces of lettuce, a tomato slice, some shredded carrots and cheddar cheese. The dressing was great, but the salad itself left a lot to be desired.
Food aside, the service was superb. My barometer of service is the attentiveness of the waiter without being intrusive or overbearing. My waiter was there, without being there. On numerous occasions my glass was refilled without even having to ask.
Overall, definitely a place I'd go back to if in the area, just not for the salad. -

Great looking building on the outside, and the inside would be nice as well if the layout wasn't so... weird.
I ate here yesterday about 2:30, and it wasn't busy at all, which is the norm pretty much everywhere at that time of the day. I was given the choice of where I wanted to sit, so I chose the bar area.
This area was totally separate from the regular dining area, joined by a short hallway. I didn't like the bar very much; it seemed thrown together. I know a guy that has a better bar in his basement.
My server was friendly and promptly greeted me and took my drink order. The beer selection was only so-so. I had a Newcastle, and later, a Fat Tire Amber.
There was a lot on the menu I'd have loved to have tried, so I narrowed it down to two, and blurted one out. Luckily, this method worked in my favor! I had the best Reuben I'd ever eaten! I chose fries as my side, and they were average, but still good enough.
I sat too long with an empty drink, but the waitress was nice when she did come by. I'd have liked a little more attention however, because there was hardly anyone else there.
Overall an enjoyable experience, but a couple of the aforementioned things brought the score down a little. I'd still go back, especially in the Spring to eat outside. -

Hickory, NC
I've been to Backstreets many times. I've never had a bad experience there. The food is always really good and the prices are reasonable. The reubens are delicious and so are the cuban sandwiches. The have good salads and I always like the soups. My five star rating is based on overall value in the Hickory area. Someone commented that it's smoky and noisy. That was the old building. They have a new building now and all restaurants in NC are no smoking.

As far as sandwich shoppes in hickory go, I haven't found a better one. I just randomly chose the sandwich of the day, which was a turkey swiss with spinach, pesto, etc. I expected that it would be OK, but I was dead wrong. It was *really* good. Full of flavor, and the butter grilled bread was delicious. I also had the fillet bisque, and I was very much impressed with it as well. Had a smokey thick flavor that lent itself very well to a soup. Ya know, some soups almost taste like spaghetti sauce, but this one was thick enough to really do well as a soup. Overall I would highly recommend this place if you're in the Hickory area for lunch.

Hickory, NC
To Backstreets for a late lunch. Delicious. I had a Bruchetta Melt. It looked pretty grim when it arrived - I was sorry I ordered it - but it was so good that I ate it all, part of the plate too, and enjoyed every bite. First time we have been there in well over a year. Our companions loved their food also. Last time (over a year ago) the cigarette smoke drove us out. This time, in a newly rebuilt building, with new Non-Smoking laws, there was no trace of smoke. Beautiful.

I've eaten there twice. The atmosphere is nice...dim lighting etc. Great place for a date. I ate a fish sandwich that was really tasty. I would definitely recommend Backstreets.
