I love four things about this place:

    1)  French Roast always available
    2)  Free wi-fi
    3)  Comfortable place to sit and escape the normal deep friend fare from other local businesses.
    4)  Locally owned

Yeah, Hayward is getting more corporate (Walgreens, Wal-mart, Perkins, McDonalds) but there are still places like Backroads that are not part of the corporate, strip mall scene.

Great espresso, great service, nice artsy place.  This is what chain corporate coffee shops are trying to replicate.  What a pleasure to find it here being as good as it is.  Just make sure they're not sneaking flavored syrup in where you don't expect it.  They messed up a macchiato so badly with whatever syrup they added to it was almost pathetic.  The fact they had to be told not to squirt fake whipped topping from a can onto said macchiato WAS pathetic.  If my wife were writing this I'm sure it would be a two star review.

Take a four star espresso, five star decor and service and a failure of a macchiato I'll split the difference to give them three stars.

Advice: Your coffee is good.  Please make all the sweet stuff optional.  It may make you money in what amounts to a tourist town, but with $300 art on the walls you might want your standard coffee drinks to be a step above Dunkin' Donuts as far as sugar content is concerned.

I completely agree with JP, if you're heading up to Hayward from The Cities on 70/63, stop at Alley Cats in Spooner, or try The Pavilion right behind Backroads and save yourself from having how to teach the "barista" how to make your dry cappuccino.
