We were staying at the Friday Harbor House for the weekend and the Receptionist recommended this restaurant after a small mishap with our planned dinner reservation. She said it was her favorite on the Island. The Backyard Kitchen was able to fit us in for a last minute reservation at a great table on a Saturday night.  As the other reviews mention it's hard to find and small but the food is overwhelmingly original and delicious. We enjoyed the #1 and #2 on the cocktail menu, corn matsa for our appetizer (delicious!), duck crepe and potato tart. The portions were just right. The service we received was attentive and courteous. Highly recommended!

Initially disappointed that a place that prides itself on local ingredients didn't have any Washington wines by the glass.

I quickly got over it.I had delicious Asian style scallops and the boy had this amazing lamb sirloin.  Solid alcoholic drinks & dessert.  Great service.  Fair prices.  Would recommend!

This restaurant is really hard to find - it is at the end of some kind of trucking warehouse parking lot. it you enter through the ferry parking lot C, you can enter through the backdoor from the garden.
We had the pan seared scallop and steak - pretty good but we were not "wow" impressed. Very friendly staff even though they were packed, service was great and in a timely manner.

Great place for a special occasion. It is a bit pricey, but the food is really good. A bit hard to find as it's tucked away in some random corner of a cul de sac, but really cute decor and atmosphere. We ordered...

    - Roasted Vegetable & Goat Cheese Crepes: I really really liked this, but if you're not a goat cheese fan, probably not for you. But I thought it was perfectly flavored and cooked.
    - Lamb Sirloin: SO GOOD! Didn't taste game-y like lamb usually does. Perfectly cooked, and oh so tender. Yum.
    - Soup of the day (some curry thing): Really really good...flavors were awesome. Big bowl too.
    - Salmon (special of the day): Salmon was good, but not wow. Least favorite dish of the bunch, but still yummy.
    - Apple Crisp: YUM YUM YUM. So sweet and crispy and delicious.

It was so relaxing to just sit back and have a nice meal while on this mini vacation to San Juan. I would eat here again!

Delicious food, good ambiance, but pricey!  Good for special occasions.

I ate here with a group of almost 20 people, so we got one side of the outdoor patio seating all to ourselves (4 tables).

    - Corn Masa Cake: basically a homemade corn tortilla with fixins - small but hearty & oh-so-crunchy
    - Oyster Appetizer: after you eat the oysters, there's this delicious sauce that remains at the bottom of the bowl - dip your bread in this sauce!
    - Daily Special/Salmon with Olive Tapenade: pretty good if you like olives. without the tapenade, the salmon is kind of bland.
    - Dessert/Apple Crisp with Ice Cream: crunchy & good.

TERRIBLE!!! My second time here and things have gone WAY downhill. $30 burnt shrimp over a lump of bland rice and a dollop of the yam soup as a "secret" sauce. I'll never go back. Two stars for the vodka mojito, but minus one star for the ice queen waitress. Two meals were sent back from our table - the vegetable crepes aka pile of mush and the burnt steak. Whoa! I can't believe that people are giving this place such high ratings. Go to Vinny's and get a taste of fresh local food and friendly service.

We came in late and was told that only appetizers will be served. But the soup of the day-Indian fusion curry corn, was excellent and the wait staff was very friendly. The location of the restaurant is very obscure but it was very nice when you walk in. Very nice ambience.

Sorry about just getting around to this as we visited in late August 2011. The location is cool, funky, off the beaten path. Nice vibe inside. Now onto the food. It's way over-priced for what it is. The food is tasty and well presented but the flavors aren't complex and aren't layered like other restaurants in this price range. One dimensional comes to mind. I'd have given a higher rating had the pricing been better in line with the food. The candied lemon rinds at the end were delicious and a nice touch. See my review on Inn at Ship Bay, Orcas Island for a comparison.

Wife and I where taking a long weekend on San Juan Island, and of course scouted out places to eat on Yelp...and this became our first dinner spot on the island...consequently the best as we freelanced the rest of our dinners up there...Mistake!

Called day of for a table for 2 and told that we could do 8:30, which works great for us as I hate eating before 8pm.

*NOTE* The place is hidden up the driveway and to the left a ways...truly a backdoor entrance!

We arrived to a busy restaurant and where promptly shown to a table, and I have to say, I really like the décor and the overall feel of the place.  There are only 14 tables inside, and at least 8 outside in a great little garden area.  Alas, to windy to sit outside...but it has a really nice, well thought out feel to the whole thing

Lettuce wrapped tofu: well thought out and put together with balanced flavors.

Entrée's where both solid; though while my lamb was great, the veggies lacked any real personality, and the ubiquitous mashed potato's where just...a 'nice' little place holder on the plate.  My wife had the scallops and they where really sensational, and saved the 4 star rating for the place.

Service was efficient, but not super engaging

Brought a bottle of wine to dinner and they graciously opened it for us at their corkage fee of $15.00.  I never begrudge this fee, but I am always a tad surprised that after I share a glass with the wait-person, to see the corkage appear on the bill...I have always told my staff to skip the corkage if the guest shares wine with them, especially if the guest is sharing something fun that one would normally get to see...Oh well.

Should you go here for dinner?  Absolutely!  Treatment to the entrée's  alone is worth the trip.

If there is a restaurant to go to on Friday harbor. IT IS HERE!!! They are able to combine different dishes such as comfort foods, like steak, pork chops, and lamb chops and infuse them with mediterranean, asian, french, african, and many other flavors and make simple but delicious food. Their menu is small, fresh and made with local ingredients.
The food is simply put AMAZING!!!!....

If you're not going to go for the food. GO for the HOMEMADE DESSERTS!!! and definitely get the House specialty: the COCONUT CREAM PIE. When I think Coconut cream pie it is here and nowhere else.

The place is small, unassuming and a bit hard to find, but when you find it is a friday harbor gem. It is a small place and get fulls quickly because everyone on the island knows the owner? so definitely make reservations or be flexible at sitting at the tiny bar, or go early.

But bottom line GO GO GO GO

Backdoor Kitchen is worth every penny.

Without my fellow yelpers, I never would have found this jem hidden behind a warehouse. Yes, a warehouse. The owners of backdoor kitchen have done a wonderful job of transforming a drab area into a beautiful outdoor patio and small indoor restaurant/bar. I highly recommend the patio. The wait staff is friendly and nice, the ambiance is cozy and yet romantic.

    The food is incredible.

I went with the salmon special ($31)-  seared coho, oven baked and presented with grilled vegetables topped with a lemon tahini dressing and an interesting pesto. Incredible (see photos).

Boyfriend chose the lamb($28), which were grilled and came with a side of mashed potatoes and vegetables. He also loved his food, although the lamb was an unfamiliar consistency, he said it was full of flavor.

If I ever return to Friday Harbor, I will most definitely return to Backdoor Kitchen as well. My boyfriend even mentioned returning with the soul purpose of dining here.

There is something magical hapenning at Backdoor Kitchen.  During my recent off-season trip, the island and its restaurants were empty.  A local recommended we try Backdoor kitchen, hidden behind a landscaping company at the end of a gravel road.  We didn't know what we were getting into, but were pleasently surprised when we turned the corner and saw the most beautiful dining room and patio loaded with locals.  Slightly removed from the tourist strip, this is where the locals go (that can afford it, at least).

This was by far one of the best meals I've had in my life.  And I have lived in New York City.  This is definitely better than EVERY restaurant I've been to in Seattle.  I would literally travel the San Juan Island just to have dinner here and drive back.

First, the drinks.  They have a creative drink menu, most of which feature their home brewed ginger ale.  I ordered the #1, which was basically a ginger mojito - incredible, and served in a large pint glass.

Second, the appetizers.  We shared a caesar salad and baked oysters served in the shell with mushroom broth and breading.

And the entrees: I ordered the new york sirloin steak.  I'm not a big meat eater, but they sure perfected this steak - delicious maranade, tender, and topped with caramelized onions.  On the side were the most delicious potatoes I've ever eaten (covered in some kind of sour cream & onion glaze) as well as local vegetables including squash and carrots.  LIterally heaven.  My girlfriend ordered the scallops; I typically don't order scallops because you tend to get so few, but her plate came with a pile of them.  And they were outstanding.

This restaurant is a must for your next visit to San Juan Island.  Our total came to $150 with tip - for two people with appetizers, entrees, a dessert and 2 drinks each.  Do it - you're on vacation!

A hidden gem, but all of the local shop owners and our conceirge steered us here. While we were so hoping to go to The Duck Soup Inn (closed for the winter months - we were sad), it is our second favorite we have found on Friday Harbor! A delight!

We started with the Thai Style Fresh Salad Rolls. Really unique - made with fried tofu, mango, cucumber, crispy wonton, Thai basil, mint, cilantro & rice noodles wrapped w/ fresh lettuces. It came with the BEST tasting peanut dipping sauce. $12.

For dinner, we had the Pan Seared Sea Scallops which was topped with a ginger sake beurre blanc and was served with sesame scallion rice cakes & seasonal vegetables. $29. And, we also had the
Vietnamese Style Seared Duck Breast - this was served over roasted yams, potatoes & fresh spinach cooked in a coconut-lime leaf-ginger sauce and then topped with fried shallots & roasted peanuts. The veggies the duck was over were SUPERFANTASTIC!!! $29.

The atmosphere is very charming, and has a cute little bar. We did not order drinks, but the menu looked creative. I would love to come back in the summer months and sit in the garden. Very charming.

As a New Yorker, I have pretty high food standards.

As a fan of the slow food movement, a piece of my heart is in the 'buy local' camp.

As a meat lover, a menu has gotta have the MEAT.

Backdoor kitchen hit it out of the park. Ambiance, menu, and delicious FOOD! (not to mention really inventive drinks... yum!) I wish I could go back every weekend. We ate out way through the San Juans, and never tasted better. A+, don't miss. Amazing.

Oh, and a not to the people who complain about the service? We felt like it was to quick! Why would you complain about staying longer in a place that is heaven. Maybe your issue is your date!

We really wanted to like it based on the reviews but sadly, we were less than impressed. Our meals lacked flavor and were not worth the hefty price tag. The service, while friendly, was scattered. And while we can't blame the restaurant, there was a very boisterous group with young children running wild while we tried to enjoy a peaceful meal. We've had better meals for less money.

Oh my goodness! The food and the desserts are SIMPLY AMAZING!

I highly recommend making a reservation or go super early if you want to eat here.

The dinners are done very creatively with unique influences around the world, and done with local and fresh ingredients. The menu is small (maybe less than 10 entrees) but the dishes that my boyfriend had were delicious (steak, lamb)...but everything looked delicious! The best part of dinner is the dessert though! My boyfriend and I shared the coconut cream pie, and it is the best coconut cream pie, and we were so spoiled that we cannot eat coconut cream pie anywhere else.

The staff are so friendly and the service is amazing. Also, despite the fancy food, you don't feel like you are in a stuffy restaurant. The feel of the restaurant is cozy and relaxed. :)

I haven't been so WOWed by a restaurant in a long time, but this restaurant makes it worth going back to Friday Harbor just to eat here! Please do go if you are in Friday Harbor! We are already figuring out when we can go back again soon!

I enjoyed the pleasant walk to the obscurely located restaurant which my wife made reservations for two weeks prior. We were early, but seated anyway.....in the bar???  We were trying to have a conversation and the bartender was shucking ice. I asked to be reseated and was told they were going to be full while there were plenty of tables for 2 available. When we left, there were still about 4 tables unclaimed.

Tucked in the back of a nursery (as in a place they sell plants, not a place where newborns get ooh'd and aah'd over) is this little, 2/3 patio, 1/3 indoor restaurant.  It's not the easiest place to find, but it's worth the look-around.

Amazing food, amazing service, and amazing desserts.  We didn't feel rushed at all, despite knowing that as the evening wore on, they'd be getting busier and busier.  (We got in on early reservations.  GO EARLY.)  Service was unobtrusive, which was nice, and everything was timed well so your entree wasn't sitting there waiting for you to finish the soup you started with.  Everything tasted fresh, the drinks were good without being overly-strong (and very herbal-y), and they have outdoor heaters.

Also, the decor reminded me a bit of a thai restaurant (jewel tones, silks, dark woods), which seemed like an interesting choice, but it worked.

My boyfriend took me to Friday Harbor for a birthday getaway, and to our excitement we found out that a bunch of the restaurants were doing a 3 for $30 special during the month of October. Luckily Backdoor Kitchen was among the selections. We were having difficulties deciding where to go, and a local let us know that no where compares to Backdoor Kitchen...and oh how right she was!

Hidden by an industrial warehouse, Backdoor Kitchen is a restaurant worth the search. Everything from the warmly lit entrance to the romantic dining area made me want to melt into my seat and never leave. Top this with some of the BEST food I have had, I'm wondering how I have never heard of this place before!

I had a delicious vegan soup which I am not quite sure how they left out the dairy because it was one of the most creamy tasting items I have ever had. Pair that with a delicious steak and San Juan wine, and I was one happy birthday girl.

If you find yourself in the San Juan Islands make sure to take time out of your schedule to search for the restaurant!

This place came highly recommended by a local on our last visit to Friday Harbor, WA. Needless to say, we both had set a high expectation for this establishment.

The Good: Walking through their garden into the restaurant was a very nice experience and we got to sit outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. The service was also very friendly and the food was really quite flavorful. Our soup and appetizer had excellent flavor combinations.  Our cocktails also were absolutely fabulous!

The Not-So-Good: Not sure if we were there on an off-day since we noticed that the service was on the slow side. It took a long time for someone to take our food/beverage orders and there was a long wait between the time we finished our appetizers and when the food arrived. We were on our vacation, so the leisurely pace was something we were not opposed to but that was just a bit too long of a wait. The service itself, again, was extremely polite and friendly.

The Bad: For our entrees, my fiance ordered a lamb dish and I had ordered a steak. We had both requested that they be cooked medium-rare. Unfortunately, his lamb was more on the medium-well side although it still was delicious and flavorful. My steak, however, was almost well-done. (There was hardly any pink in the middle.) I then requested for another piece of steak because it was simply too dry. (This was the first time in over 10 years that I had to send any food back at a restaurant.) The waitstaff did apologize profusely and took the overcooked steak away. Minutes later, another piece of steak arrived and it was well-seared on the outside and there was more pink inside (still more on the medium side than medium-rare) although I proceeded to finish my meal regardless.  My fiance and I concluded that if we decide to return, we should not order any red meat dishes here.

We really wanted to fall in love with this restaurant.  With all the great reviews I see on Yelp, we do want to return and give them another chance.  Perhaps the second time around will be a better experience for us.  :-)

Although this place is pricey by the standards of many cities, its dinner prices are on par with most restaurants in Friday Harbor.   However, its price is low when one considers the food, service, and atmosphere, one gets for it.

I had their dinner special, which was a wild salmon atop of rice noodles, with thai style sauces, and a variety of vegetables, each offering different flavors and textures: every bite was a sensation of perfection.   The service, although not the fastest, was also great: when I got their "No. 1" cocktail special, and it was a little too sweet for my liking, they added in some more vodka to mellow it out nicely.

It was so good that we went back there a second night.  The second night I had the scallop dinner which was very good, though it didn't bust with flavor as much as their salmon special did.

The only recommendation I would give to them is to add a little extra ice cream on their ala mode desserts (we only tried one, and it was quite tasty).

    NOTE:
Make a reservation because it can get quite crowded.  Also, when you make your reservation, get very clear directions from them....this place is very difficult to find, despite the fact that it is centrally located because it shares space and a parking lot with a nursery.

This was truly a hidden gem! We visited Friday Harbor for a weekend get away and had the chance to dine at Backdoor Kitchen. The restaurant  was located behind an industrial area,  a little hard to find at first.  The atmosphere is very charming. We walked through a lovely outdoor garden to get to the restaurant entrance. The inside was warm and cozy. The walls was decorated with warm color modern paintings.

The food was amazing. The only place I can think of that's as good as Backdoor Kitchen was CHEZ PANISSE! I love the fact Backdoor Kitchen uses organic natural ingredients.  Many of the dishes had a hint of Asian influence. I would recommend the Pan Seared Sea Scallops to everyone. It was topped w/ a ginger sake beurre blanc. served w/ sesame scallion rice cakes & seasonal vegetables. Every bite of my dinner was marvelous. The service was very good. Backdoor Kitchen just became one of my top favorite restaurant!

One of the best meals I've had all year!  After reading about Backdoor Kitchen in Sunset Magazine, I decided that I had to find this adorable restaurant and try it out.  I was not disappointed.

I walked into the patio area around 3pm the night I wanted to make a reservation and was easily able to reserve a table for myself at 7pm.  Although I felt very under-dressed since I was in my outdoorsy kayaking clothes, I was assured that it was just fine and was welcomed with open arms.  The service was great, very warm and personable.

After debating between a couple of different entrees (they all sounded so good!), I decided on the salmon and prawn special.  It was fresh caught salmon and chilled prawns served over rice noodles with a coconut-lime sauce and fresh crispy veggies.  While the meal itself sounded very simple, the flavors were wonderfully complex and refreshing.  The perfect summer meal in my opinion.  I finished off my experience at Backdoor Kitchen with a warm bittersweet chocolate cake garnished with fresh berries from the island.  It was incredible and a great way to end my evening.

Next time I'm in Friday Harbor, I hope to visit Backdoor Kitchen again...hopefully with someone accompanying me this time.  I would most definitely recommend this restaurant as a must have while on San Juan Island.

The meal I had at Backdoor Kitchen was excellent. The food was on par with some of my favorites from Napa and the portions were much larger than expected. It's difficult  to find an affordable place to eat in Friday Harbor period. Everything is so expensive and if you are going to have to fork-over the big bucks for a meal, it may as well be a good one right?

This is our favorite dinner spot on the island. It's tucked away behind the parking lot of Mi Casita Mexican Restaurant so you need to ask a local how to find it.

Most of the table seating is outside in what appears to be a "Zen Garden" which is great if it's warm weather. There are some tables inside and a bar area which is a bit cramped but this place is classy.

The food is great and so is the service. Plates are around $27 each so break out the piggy-banks.

I had a delicious dinner here last night. I was alone so seating wasn't a problem and I just sat at the bar and chatted with the gals that were working.  They were really sweet and I liked the warm, dark atmosphere. I had the steak and it was perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth style. I also treated myself to a dessert of a warm apple-pear crisp with vanilla ice cream. Again, it was perfect. I highly recommend eating here if you're on the island.

The fact that you have to work to find this place is part of its charm. We started off the evening with a selection of creative cocktails - mine was vodka mixed w/ muddled mint leaves and ginger beer. I had the Chipotle Mushroom soup as a starter and then the crispy anise-glazed duck in a coconut curry broth tinged with blue ginger and lime. Both were excellent.

The only thing we had that didn't quite meet our expectations was the bittersweet chocolate cake w/ almonds - which seemed to lack a depth of flavor. Nevertheless we'd come back here again in a second.

A great recommendation by our kayak guide, Jason!  Food was inventive and very well prepared.  The service was a little slow, but hey, it was a Tuesday evening and at 3 pm that day had booked all reservations between about 6 and 8 -- they were packed.  I ordered the local (Oregon) pork chop with pinto beans and jicama slaw, my fiance ordered a roasted summer vegetable crepe with a herb cashew pesto, and a white bean side with tomatoes (both dishes, IMO, tended to a "tex-mex" spicing. e.g. lots of cumin, chilis, cilantro, etc.).

All were done very well, the pork chop was perfect -- a hint of pink, very juicy, and well spiced.  Their house wine was Ok, a huge fruit bomb shiraz from NE Australia, but it was $26 for a carafe (which was probably closer to 1L than 750mL), but we went with it -- and it was my only very slight complaint; for doing such an amazing job sourcing all of their food locally, a sub-$30 house wine from Washington I think would have made it even better.

We could only afford 1 expensive dinner while on vacation and this was it. TOTALLY worth it.
First it is hard to find, tucked behind some industrial building. But hiding back there is  a serene garden with outdoor seating amoung the fountians and flagstones.
We sat indoors as it was a little chilly.

The food was incredible both to look at and eat. I had a perfectly cooked pork chop. Super juicey and tender with a creamy poblano sauce, crisp hicima  salad and smokey pinto beans. Amazing.

My wife had an Indian prawn platter with saffron rice, sweet and spicy chuttney, a delicate curry sauce and garden fresh wax beans.
They have a impressive selection of creative infused cocktails, but even the most inexpensive house red wine was suprisingly good.

We left not a single bit guilty about dropping $90 on dinner and drinks, completely worth it.

The only negitive was they seemed a little under staffed, but still good service.

You'd never find this place unless someone pointed you to it, but what a nice surprise to find this little oasis in an industrial pocket of town.  The white lights in the trellises greet you as you approach, and the warm glow from the dining room and bar invite you in.

The food was excellent, I had the goat cheese wrapped in a grape leaf to start, which was fabulous.  I ordered the ravioli, and I loved every bite of it.  My date had the lamb from a local producer and enjoyed every bite.  The wine selection was good, and I was pleased by the beer selection as well.

Our server was very knowledgable, attentive, and contributed to a wonderful evening.  Would definitely come here again.

Tough to find...but oh so worth it.  Friendly staff only made the food that much better.  From the apps, the wine list, and the food - it was fantastic!

Though everything on the menu is a bit on the pricey side, the food and the ambiance are well worth it.

We had seafood, lamb-chops and vegetarian dishes and all of them were fantastic. Do give the yam soup a try!

Service was very good and our server recommended an excellent Pinot Noir. We all had a very tasty crab cake, almost all crab, with sweet corn. The mains were good too - salmon, steak and scallops reflected the chef's skill with local ingredients. Desserts were fantastic - a berry crisp stole the show. Don't miss the cocktails either. Courses arrive with a healthy amount of spacing in between. We liked it but if you want to speed in and out this might not work for you.

Used to be more of a lunch spot for locals (because nobody could find it except locals). They have changed the place to a dinner spot and bar. The food is good.

after all the great reviews I really wanted to eat here. The walk to the nearly hidden place behind a workshop is very nice. Unfortunately the place is closed at odd times and when I went they had been closed for a week and would not open again until the next day when I was gone. I will definitely try this again if I get to the area.

A great find. This restaurant is off the beaten path but an absolute must if you are visiting Friday Harbor. The restaurant has great ambience and really cool outdoor patio. I had a steak that was perfect and my wife really enjoyed the innovative vegatable crepe. Ingrediants were all fresh, the dishes imaginative, the menu straghtforward and the staff was friendly and attentive. We'll be back.

Excellent restaurant.  We ate a late dinner here on our first night in Friday Harbor.  Our waitress was very attentive and helped us select an excellent bottle of wine.  We split a soup, salad and lamb entree- all were excellent.  Although the beautiful garden patio was full when we arrived (we decided to sit inside rather than wait), we had a really wonderful dinner in a great location.  I would definitely go back if I ever end up in Friday Harbor again!
