Woahhhhhh there people! The backdoor deli as and awesome litte joint ran by a local Hawaiian family. There prices are typical for a independent shop, all ingredients are fresh a good.
As for the veggie sandwich below, It's unfortunate to here, but it sounds like it didn't come with much as it was, maybe you should have asked for pineapple or avocado? or read before ordering? Regardless, while the backdoor deli has all sorts of pastries, breakfast plates, normal deli items and many in a Hawaiian style, ONLY OLD PEOPLE OF HABIT AND THE FOOLISH GO TO BACKDOOR DELI FOR NORMAL FOOD!
THE FOOLISH!
those in the now, you now included, go here for one thing, and one thing only. The Hawaiian plate. Always to go, because you get more that way. And can properly mix everything. Everything being:
3 big scoops of sticky white rice
a fresh, sliced, sweet teryaki-type chicken breast
a romaine and tomato side salad
a large side of THE MOST AMAZING DRESSING EVER. ever. its creamy but light, like a thicker balsamic dressing, but it is sweet, tangy, appears to have poppy seeds, and is one of gods gifts to man.
take the salad and dressing, throw it in the rice box, and shake. You now have the most delicious Hawaiian rice and chicken salad.
(note: real Hawaiian food is not pineapples and coconuts people! foods you wouldn't even think of as "Hawaiian" are staples for many families in the actual islands) -

So I ordered a veggie sandwich here (can't have cheese, poo) excited for the Hawaiian spin they were going to put on it. Out came shredded lettuce and one slice of tomato between two slices of your average wheat bread and a side of chicken noodle soup. So I checked the menu....where were the sprouts? the artichoke? some avocado? mustard?? Maybe some grilled pineapple for a hawaiian kick?
It was a definite let down. I know I ordered a veg sandwich but lettuce and tomato do not constitute a veg sandwich. And what's hawaiian about chicken noodle soup? -

Just had a late breakfast/ lunch here and enjoyed it. We like a Hawaiian vibe and Mom&Pop places, so when we walked in and saw a big picnic table indoors with a painting of Lanikai on the wall behind it, we were excited. I had the Loco Moco and my wife had a veggie sandwich. The LM was about as good a one as I've ever eaten. The veggie sandwich looked and tasted healthy. My wife was a bit disappointed in the potato salad side, thinking it was a bit too bland. The staff was very nice and we liked the casual beachy feel. We'll be back when we visit the area. Very casual and inexpensive.
