Norman, OK
This place was awesome and very unique! I ordered a create your own sandwich on the french baguette, with roast beef, cheddar cheese, and horseradish mayo. It was fantastic!
The bread was fresh, flavorful, with a chew, and everything I would expect from a french baguette. The meat was lean, not salty, and plentiful. The cheese was white cheddar (no fake yellow coloring), and was like a farmhouse cheddar with lots of flavor. The horseradish mayo had just the right amount of kick, and they didn't slather it on too thick.
The atmosphere was pretty cool. Each table had a national park map on it, and then it was sealed. It was very outdoorsy with no frills. They are in the business of great sandwiches, and that is all. And they do it wonderfully.
The staff was fun and friendly. When they found out this was my first trip, they offered me a free brownie or a free cookie. I chose the brownie, which was wrapped in saran warp and in a huge cookie jar. When I reached in to claim my freebie, the saran wrap was stuck to the glass, and as I tried to grasp it more firmly, my fingers sunk into the brownie. I knew I had chosen well! After devouring my sandwich, I unwrapped my moist brownie was was greeted with rich, chocolatey goodness. These were no precooked and shipped brownies... they seemed homemade and fresh!
Next time I'm in Denver, I'll definitely be getting some Backcountry Provisions! -

What I had? Ridgeline (Roasted turkey, sharp cheddar cheese, honey cured bacon, avocado, tomato, romaine and garlic mayo)
Food review: So, I had received a lot of mixed reviews about this place so just wasn't sure what to expect. First of all, there wasn't really anything on the menu that jumped out at me so had to ask the man takin' orders what was good. Decided to go with the ridgeline which is supposedly the most popular option there. Bread choices.. oooh.. french baguette looks good. How about french forget-about-it? In consensus with the negative reviews I had received before going to backcountry, the bread is just sad. I expected some crisp and somewhat damaging to the roof of my mouth :-) with some good flavor. Instead I got some soft blah.
OK ok.. enough with the bread rant... really I'm not terribly critical of bread with sandwiches but it was just disappointing that that bread got the label of french baguette. Inside of the bread, however, everything was generally tasty.
Service? Friendly
Other thoughts: OK, yeah it has a lot of local beers but this is a lunch place, yeah? Unless you can get away with that for lunch time, it doesn't do me any good. :-s I had some coworkers that gave feedback about the bread being sad back when it about opened. It appears they did not find the feedback valuable which is unfortunate. -

Quick and friendly service, delicious food and great atmosphere!
On my visit I coveted the outside seating - wishing I could pull up a chair on this sunny and warm day. So, inside I sat where I was delighted with the simple, but tasteful decor.
Walk up to the register and order a sandwich from the menu or build your own. The staff welcomed me and were genuinely friendly. In just a few moments my sandwich was ready...I was in for a real treat.
I had the Expedition - roast beef on wheat with swiss cheese, tomato, avocado, lettuce and chipotle mayo. WOW - supper fresh ingredients and taste.
The clientle appeared to be mostly business people enjoying casual lunch. The cool music track played at just the right volume so shouting wasn't necessary.
I will come back for lunch the next time I'm in Denver. I think I'll try the Grand - check out the menu at http://backcountryprov... -
Review from Ted O.
I fully believe that if I go into an establishment and have an excellent experience, I should give that establishment a five star review.
But then what on earth do I do when I go back an have an even better experience? How do I give them a sixth star?
My lastest visit to started when the guy working the register overheard me telling my Lady that I was gonna get the same sandwich as the last time. It was just so good, you know? When I tried to order it he said, "If you've already had that, you should really get something else. If you liked the Dolomite, try the Into the Wild. It's not on the menu, but it has [list of amazing sounding ingredients]. Give it a whirl. It's awesome!"
How cool is that? He cares enough about me and my experience and has enough belief in the quality of food, and has enough knowledge not only to tell me I should branch out, but also to recommend I eat a different sandwich which ended up rocking my fricking world!!
And then he made a fantastic recommendation to my Lady (who can be quite indecisive) who was there for the first time. He asked her which type of meats, and toppings, and flavors she liked, and ended up recommending a sandwich that had her closing her eyes and savoring the flavor. Then he gave her a free brownie for being a first timer!
I don't know if you can get this type of customer service during the lunch rush, but the fact that you can get it any time is fantastic.
This would be one of my favorite places even if sandwiches weren't my favorite food. As it is, I think this is my favorite eating establishment in Denver.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Just when you think a sandwich joint cannot possibly push the envelope on culinary creativity, BAM! Backcountry Provisions steps up to the plate and connects for a home run. Fresh takes on old favorites like turkey and Swiss or roast beef and cheddar make Backcountry Provisions a winner. I picked a half sandwich and soup combination. The Ridgeline sandwich is turkey-bacon-avocado with cheddar and a heavenly garlic mayo on French baguette. I typically pass on mayo, but in this case it was worth it. There were four soups available so I tried the carrot ginger. It was more of a chunky bisque not a purée like I was expecting, but it was still good. The sandwich was the star of the show for me. All fresh, made with care and an interesting taste combination not too far from that which is familiar but new enough to be engaging. The sandwich comes with a pickle spear and the soup, oyster crackers. The French baguette was soft in just the right way for a sandwich. I like a hard baguette on its own, say with just butter, but ripping my mouth up on a sandwich is annoying so this bread choice works well here. Other notables on the menu would be a kid's menu, a few salads and a light selection of breakfast bagel sandwiches. They offer gluten free bread and the build your own menu is broken down by bases, like turkey and chicken, beef, veggie, ham, or fish (yes they have a tuna sandwich but more interestingly they have a salmon and Havarti sandwich).
Booze is also a part of the equation at Backcountry Provisions, not exactly a wild west saloon but a decent offering and a happy hour to boot, pilgrim. Beers on tap from Oskar Blues Brewing and a careful selection of cans and bottles like a PBR 24oz or Sunshine Wheat from New Belgium are complemented by harder stuff like Tito's hand-made vodka, and a small selection of wines. The usual fountain drinks, iced tea or San Pellegrino sparkling fruit beverages are also available.
The interior design is a mountain town/general store theme. Aged wood paneling on everything they could fit. Maps laminated to the table tops show Colorado wilderness. A snow board is hung to the main counter by bungee cords. It's feels like any number of mountain towns in Colorado; rustic, homey, comfortable.
Fresh, good food in a laid back environment summarizes my experience at Backcountry Provisions. -

Oh Backcountry, I love you more and more each time!
I recently stopped in for lunch with the hubs and got the turkey trailhead (turkey, honey dijon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese, sans the red onion) sandwich and had entree envy of the hubs who ordered the yard bird (turkey, chipotle mayo, pepperoncini, lettuce, and cheese, served hot) - which is a sandwich that is usually offered as a special but you can order as a type of "secret" order. Both sandwiches were good but I'm opting to get my own yard bird next time.
I noticed that they now offer Left Hand Milk Stout on tap - mmm...that is really a great beer to go with these great sandwiches!
My only guff is that the women's bathroom seems kind of out of the way and not as "oh hey - here is our bathroom" as the men's. I always feel like I am trespassing on the salon's (which is next door) property when I go to wash my hands before my lunch. I just wish it was a little bit more welcoming. Just sayin'.Listed in: Hooray Patios!, 100 for 2012, Tasty Lunches

Wow, where to begin? My office is located very close to Backcountry Provisions and I place fairly large delivery orders there weekly, if not more. The fax-in ordering is great - fast and simple! They call back almost immediately to confirm and double check your order and they are super friendly! Their delivery is ALWAYS on time and again, the service is super friendly.
The food? Fresh and delicious every single time. I usually order a variety of box lunches and I've noticed that the sandwiches keep pretty fresh in the fridge for a couple of days when I want to save some for later. Their selection of sandwiches and ingredients is incredible! The turkey Ridgeline is my go-to sandwich, but I tried the roast beef Expedition for the first time today and I'm in love.
If you haven't tried this place, you are missing out. Thank you, Backcountry Provisions. You guys rock! -

Best sandwich in Denver and that is true of about 4 of them I have had!
Expect to pay for it though, almost $10 for a sandwich is steep but it puts places around it to shame. -

Backcountry,
You continue to have my heart, and there are several reasons why. Here goes:
1. Your amazing sammich's are to die for. I was tempted by your daily special today [french dip!] and went with my usual, but i absolutely love your food :) everything is homemade, fresh daily and good to the last bite!
2. You are located right next to my office, which makes for a nice long lunch after just a hop, skip and jump to your store. your interior and patio are adorable and very welcoming :)
3. Your staff is outstanding. I was greeted by smiles and my face & name were recognized as soon as i was at the counter. A "Hi Katie :)" was said, and i hadn't even told him my name...must have a memorable face! ha :) everyone is super friendly, nice and are hard workers :)
4. Beer and liquor is not only sold here all day long, but for dirt cheap. a sammich and a PBR for $6. count me in.
5. I just love you :)
Thanks again for making the first installment of Downtown Yelpers lunch hour awesome...as always :)1 Previous Review: Show all »

Too much bread not enough meat. Yes the ingredients are very fresh, including the avocado, I would like to have had more generous portions of these fresh ingredients everyone is raving about! Yes the bread is also fresh, and by the end of lunch I could have made another sandwich with all the bread I tore away in search of the roast beef!
If you like bland sandwiches made with bread you can find in your fridge, then this is your spot. -

Oh Yea, loved Backcountry! Such a great selection of sandos. I, of course, go for those Italian meats aka European Specialties. I ordered the Dolomite, which consisted of prosciutto, salami, provolone, roasted red peppers, red onions and was dressed with house vinaigrette. Momma Mia! Magnifico! I devoured it. The bread was nice and fresh. The portion of meat to bread to toppings was perfect. I hate sandwiches that have way to much of one, and not enough of the other. I sampled my mother's Thanksgiving dinner sando, I think it was called the Pilgrim. When she bit into it, she literally said out loud "It tastes like Thanksgiving!" She requested hers toasted on Texas toast and it really took the sando to a higher level. I personally prefer my sandwiches not toasted, but that was fantastically toasted.
My father had a chicken Cesar and the hubs had...um...not sure, but I do know he also devoured his. We each had a beer and enjoyed the front patio. The price is a bit steep, but I don't mind spending at all when I know I'm getting quality. And they have Avery White Rascal on tap...can't be beat!Listed in: Yum-Yum Nom-Nom, Soakin Up The Rays, Lando of the Sando

The service here makes this my go-to sandwich place in town. They are always super friendly and Dave (the owner) knows me now because of my frequent visits for their yummy coffee. It's brewed just for them by Novo. It's nutty, smooth and their store is right along my route for walking to work. Dangerous!
Their sandwiches are large and full of tasty ingredients. All are really fresh--I can't stand old lettuce or unripe tomatoes on a sandwich. I've had some of their daily specials and they have all been really good. My most recent lunch visit found me ordering The Summit, a staple on their everyday menu. Ham, brie, bacon, cranberry chutney and all the normal fixins made for a delightful lunch with some fellow yelpers. Oh, and their breakfast sandwiches? Pretty awesome as well. -
Review from Shalan G.
This was a venue for a fabulous Yelp Elite Event a while ago, where I had a taste of their mouthwatering offerings. They were so good that I had to come back for lunch the next day with Chris in tow.
A fantastic little place bang in the centre of LoDo, Backcountry Provisions is perfect for a quick lunch - make sure to walk back to work - these noshings are quite large.
These are some good sandwiches - no skimping on the stuffing/fillings here. The take a lot of care making sure the fillings are piled high and in a sensible manner - especially noteworthy since I hate stuff falling out as I eat.
The menu is extensive, and there is a sandwich out there for everyone.
If sandwiches make your world rock, try this little place - you won't be disappointed. They also cater.
A cute patio completes the experience.Listed in: Oh Denver, I miss thee...

Review from Barb B.
There are so many options downtown now, it is great. When I used to work here it was hard to get a good sandwich. But now holy buckets, just within a 5 block radius of this place there are so many places to go! The abundance of options, combined with the fact that I was just in Northern California for a few months, leads me to give Backcountry Provisions only three stars, whereas a few years ago it probably would have gotten four.
I do think that getting the sandwich toasted would be very helpful, and I will try that next time. But I mean they are putting meat and cheese and stuff on bread an the whole wheat bread is nothing to write home about, for almost $10? Come on man, that is just a bit much. However, all the ingredients are quite fresh and I do enjoy a few of the combinations they have created. I had a summit I believe which is ham, brie, cranberry chutney, bacon, and garlic mayo. I modified it a bit (removed the bacon and mayo, I am watching my girlish figure), but it was darned okay. Good-sized also, I am a big eater but I was full when I finished it. They do give you a ton of meat.
The service is quite friendly and the people who work there all seem to enjoy it. I like the atmosphere and the topological maps around also. I would go back but I won't be a regular. -

Whoa. These sandwiches are good. Really good. The roast beef with bleu cheese is out of control. Like explode my mouth with magic out of control. It's called the Fourteener. I could eat this thing nearly everyday. I love sandwiches with flair and personality and this place delivers on both.
Also, they carry a rad selection of Oskar Blues beer and the staff is totally the deal. I'm a huge fan now. Go there and get the Fourteener toasted. You'll thank me. I guarantee it (just like the Men's Warehouse guy). -

The last time I came here I gave this place a three star. Since then, I have been here a number of times for lunch and had a great experience each time.
Backcountry Provisions offers great daily lunch specials. Today, I tried the tuna sandwich special on sourdough bread. This sandwich was absolutely delicious and the portion was large as well. In the past, I tried a roast beef special with blue cheese. That was another standout.
If I don't order the specials, I usually swing for the build your own sandwich.
The prices may be a bit high for a deli, but the meat quality and ingredient quality is top-notch.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I have been to Backcountry Provisions several times now, but it was this last time that I went that made me say "Yay!", and "Yum!", and "This is up there with the best sandwiches I've ever had." The secret? Get that fucker TOASTED!
The first time I went I had the Ridgeline. Good sandwich. Turkey, bacon, sharp cheddar, garlic mayo, slices of avocado, romaine, and tomato. I always get it on baguette. It was good and delicious. This last time I went I had the same sandwich, only toasted. It was 10 times better. I could taste the garlic mayo. The slices of avocado were creamier and shined through with flavor. The bacon was bacon-ier. It was insane!
I've also had the Summit - ham, brie, bacon, cranberry chutney, romaine, and tomato. When I had that, the guy recommended it toasted, but I got it without. Again, good sandwich. Delicious even. Next time? I'm getting that fucker TOASTED!
I'll be back for sure BP. I'll be the one asking you to toast that fucker! -

If you mix outdoor hippies with awesome sandwiches and a hint of extreme sports, you get this joint.
Tasty sandwiches that skew a bit to the fancy side of the spectrum. I ordered the godfather. Delicious imported mortadella and capocollo complemented by provolone, romaine, tomato and savory onion, topped with the house vinaigrette.
Awesome, albeit small, beer selection at very reasonable prices.
Great little place to kick back and have a beer and sandwich at lunch. -
Review from Tiffany N.

Holy delicious sandwich Batman! Backcountry Provisions is awesome for several reasons, but right out of the gate I noticed that these folks know how to properly make a sandwich. And that's all in the layering. You know how sometimes you get a sandwich and the slippery stuff like tomatoes or avocados start falling out the sides? That' because they are touching each other! But, at BCP they know to put the slippery stuff on other sandwich stuffings that will keep in all in between the bread. This is fantastic because not only does your sandwich stay whole, but with each bite you get all the flavors that you wanted when you ordered said sandwich. And that my friends causes an explosion of flavors in your mouth where you can taste each distinctive ingredient before they all meld together to create a new super flavor. You know a flavor that gets a cape and saves the day and all that jazz. :)
The sandwich I tried was the Expedition and it was so good I'm itching to go back and try more and more of what they offer. My sandwich was made of top round roast beef, cheddar cheese, avocado, tomato, romaine lettuce, and chipotle mayo. While I had a meaty option BCP does have a lot of other options include fish, veggie, and even European style sandwiches (one is made with German liverwurst.) And if you don't like any of their pre-designed selects you can build your own. The little Lego user in me loves the concept of building your own anything so I will have to try this sooner or later...
They also do breakfast and beyond sandwiches you can order salads or homemade soups. And they do serve beer and wine, even featuring a happy hour between 4 and 6 pm daily (even on the weekends I believe) with tons of local Colorado beers. What's not to love about that? -

Just moved to Colorado from California and the wife and I spent our anniversary in Denver. Went to Backcountry because of the good reviews and free fountain drink when you check in on yelp. When we got there the staff was super friendly. After talking a little bit we told them about our move and they said "take a free brownie, welcome to colorado!".
Food was great. I took advantage of the Monday meatball special and the wife got the hot springs. Both delish.
If your around backcountry and looking for lunch stop in for the food and stay for the great people!! -

You ever wanted to go to a simple sandwich place that had top of the line ingredients, excellent quality bread, good mix of drinks/chips to go with your hand carved specialty sandwich? And to top it...if you have dietary restrictions, can order to your liking a sandwich whichever way you like...without getting an attitude? Oh...how about a place that is real chill to just hang out at, and browse through cool pictures/tabletop covers, etc while you wait for your sandwhich to be prepared? Well...this is the place to check out if you said yes to anything to what I just wrote. I ordered the Tuna Sandwich on Rye, with Garlic Mayo and the rest of the stuff that came with the sandwhich and my-oh-my did I have a party in my mouth. So savory and delicious and amazing...I'm not good with words but this is the best I could do with describing my experience here. Highly recommended (so is Illegal Petes!).

Everything here is super yummy! Besides the sandwiches being tasty, the staff is incredible! These guys have the best customer service skills. I've ordered catering a couple of times for work and they are always on time with the correct order and a great personality. And everytime I've stopped in for lunch the staff is super nice. No crap attitudes here.

I don't understand the hype.
This place is a forgettable sandwich shop. I went here because there were a bunch of good reviews on Yelp, but for $8 the french baguette was soggy, the meats tasted processed and there was nothing special about the sandwich. -
Review from Rachel C.
It was a dark, rainy & blustery day in Denver! Those days are few and far between in this land of sunshine and rich blue skies. A day that just calls for something special to warm your soul and fill your tummy.
I'd heard about "Backcountry Provisions" and decided to give it a try. As we crossed the threshold, I was more than a little reluctant. There was not one single customer in the shop. I had to ask if they were even Open. The cute smiling guy behind the counter said "yes, it was just a slow day because of the weather and weekends are always a little slow."
As we stepped up to the counter to check out the menu, I was more than a little pleasantly surprised at their selection. It was not your standard fare. the choices were amazing . . . and difficult to choose from. I was sure that no matter what I chose I would wish I have chosen differently. After the first bite, I never thought about it again. The sandwich was fantastic! I never, never, never eat a whole sandwich. I inhaled this one. I will leave it to your imaginations which one I chose, but suffice it to say, I will probably eat the same thing again, no matter what other wonderful choices there are. I left full and happy.
Recommendation: Save a seat for me. I will be there as often as my little legs will take me there. -

I dig this little spot. For starters, the people who work there seem genuinely nice and happy to help you. The space is clean and environmentally conscious (they compost and recycle), which is always a plus. Most importantly, they serve good food. Yes, it's s simple sandwich shop, but they do what they do well. I should also mention that they have beer, wine and an outdoor space. Sunshine, a great meal, great service and adult beverages. Who can argue with that?

Sandwiches are big, filling, and slightly different from average. With specially cured meats and combinations I couldn't think up on my own. Staff is always super friendly, remember your name like magic. Lunch time line is about 3-5 minutes long, but worth the wait. Price is a little on the higher end for a sandwich shop but still reasonable for downtown. Enjoy.

Review from Amy K.
Surprised this place wasn't more crowded during lunchtime on a Friday. The location seems ideal for the business crowd or the person picking up their "prescription" at the dispensary next door (not being from CO I am still blown away by the number of dispensaries around) but I was talking about sandwiches.
The menu has an interesting selection of sandwiches or you can build your own. They also have about 2-3 salads and 2 soups to choose from. I ordered the sandwich of the day which was a tuna melt with spicy peppers, mustard, onions and some other goodness. Loved that they carry rye bread...yum! I ate my delicious sandwich outside on their small patio amazed that it was only mid-February.
Two gripes: 1. I asked the person who took my order if I should wait inside for my sandwich or could I go outside. She said go sit outside and they would bring it to me. Well they kind of forgot that part and it took a while for them to bring me my sandwich. 2. When my sandwich was delivered they didn't bring any napkins out with it although I noticed they did when they delivered a sandwich to the guy behind me. Consistency would be nice.
All in all a great little place to grab lunch. -
Review from Melissa T.

The thing is, if I wanted to cut up vegetables into smaller pieces and mix them together, I'd make my own damn salad. Two to three inch diameter tomato slices, long strings of lettuce, pepperoncinis banished to one corner of the container, plastic packets of Newman's Own? Not a salad. Definitely not an $8 salad.
But! Sandwiches! This is Backcountry's forte. Tastiness wrapped in delicious bread. A veggie sandwich with cucumbers and cream cheese? Yum! More than one veggie option? Yay!
Service is quick and friendly, nice decor, and the map-topped tables add charm.
Take a knife to those sandwich toppings again to make them something I can fit into my mouth and I'd give four stars for sure. -

Great location, cute patio, friendly servers, cool sandwich choices.
Had seen this place a couple times, but it has some tough competition on that corner.
I went with the Olympus, tons of eggplant, i SAW them make the olive tepenade - how frickin cool is that?
Lots of seating, outdoor patio has limited seats but on a Monday on a holiday weekend, we had the place to our selves.

Full disclosure: I have a personal friendship with one of the partial owners.
However, this place rocks - such a nice option for us downtown professionals. The place is decorated great and the sandwiches are amazing. Super fresh ingredients and interesting flavor profiles. They also deliver, which is so helpful for stressful days when you can't leave your desk, or for meetings.
Please support this wonderful new addition to LoDo! -
Review from Kate G.
In spite of all the delicious sounding combos on the menu, I went with my standby on my 2nd visit here: plain old turkey on wheat with lettuce, tomayo, sprouts, havarti, mustard and mayo. I like to know if a sandwich place can make my simple sandwich stand out without all the fuss of the other yummy add-ons and distractions. And it was perfection! Each ingredient is quality. And of course some of even those basic items were gussied up: the mustard was the ground deli style, the havarti was dill-specked, the mayo was chipotle flavored...and they had even more varieties of many of those condiments as well (garlic and horseradish mayos, multiple mustards, etc.). They hand-wrapped my sandwich when I couldn't finish it and even offered another pickle slice :) I love the easy composting that goes on here and the local art that adorns the walls and especially the punch card! I'm a sucker for any kind of punch card. And I don't think the service could be ANY friendlier. I'd really like to come back and sample a tasty Colorado brew with my sandwich.

I have been all about sandwiches for lunch this week and Backcountry Provisions was high on my list of must try places. I stopped in at 12:30 today and the place was mostly empty. I probably could have ordered almost any of their sandwiches and been pretty pleased, but I settled on The Grand which is an Italian style sandwich. The quality of the ingredients in the sandwich were fantastic and the garlic mayo was amazing. My main complaint would be the baguette; it had a bit of a grocery store sandwich bread consistency and really was not on par with the rest of the sandwich. The sandwiches are also pretty large and could easily be split between two people if you also grab a bag of chips.
Update on 8/30: I received an email from the owner letting me know that they had fixed the bread issue that I wrote about and he invited me out to try a sandwich. I haven't yet, but will report back as soon as I do.Listed in: Super Sandwiches!

Sandwiches aren't out of this world and a bit overpriced, but are still fresh and delicious. Nice, clean interior for a quick sit down; also good for a grab-n-go lunch.
