Not often a Coffee Shop hosts full-on Rock shows! Awesome!
SITREP
THE GRIND is one of those odd-ducks that has found itself being all things to many different people. When I train staff in our Riverside Regional Office, THIS is the place I love to spend my "decompression", chill-down time to get me prepared & "psyched-up" for the next day of trainings.
On a related note, this is one community where I never step foot inside a Starbucks. I love Starbucks, don't get me wrong. But where I have been able to find a quality Independent Coffee House - which The Grind certainly is - then that is where choose to post up.
SETUP
Located conveniently on University Avenue just a block away from our Riverside HQ, all I have to do is grab my pack, my cloves and head to goffee (goth-coffee) with my circle of friends that hang out here from the Riverside / San Bernardino-area hoods.
Riverside is not a giant metropolitan city like L.A. further West of it. But it hosts a wonderful eclectic community that is fed into by schools such as UC-Riverside and the other local colleges. Lots of students and professors alike come here to mingle and converse. Makes for a fun time, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
MENU!
Yes! There is a menu! They have real FOOD! Not just "bites". BREAKFAST! LUNCH! DINNER! Late Night Offerings! Full on sandwiches, croissant sandwiches, salads, and many other savory and sweet taste treats. There have been a couple of days when I ate all my meals here and grabbed the free WiFi while in so doing.
And let's not forget about the coffee itself.
ART
But there is so much more to THE GRIND than just the food and drinks. They have so many great local events that they feature and sponsor. From art exhibitions - since they are dialed into the local art community and galleries - to music shows - many DJs and Bands have events here.
There is the yearly GHOSTWALK that occurs every October and is a fun festival of art and music that pulls in much of the Riverside community.
MUSIC
THE GRIND Coffee House itself is street-level. However, there is also a Subterranean Level where Bands practice and perform on a regular basis. There is also an Upstairs Level where MORE music offerings and dancing can take place. So this is truly a multidimensional venue of diverse opportunities.
THE LOWDOWN
If you find yourself in Riverside, have no fear that you can't find a fun, exciting venue to mix and mingle in. The Grind is your place. -
Review from Meena N.
As a study place- awesome. The place must have been a bar long time ago but this place is a really cool place. I love the decor, the line of bookshelves full of books and odd trinkets, the high ceilings, the abundance of tables and chairs, how it's not too quiet but not loud at all and the temperature is just right. Cool enough to wear a sweatshirt but warm enough for a tank. I swear, it was perfect. Their coffee- is okay. I had a sip of my friend's iced coffee and it was kind of watery, but maybe that's because I like it really strong. I'm a fan because they have an outside seating area, a shit ton of tables and chairs, an upstairs seating area and a downstairs. There's a bunch of different kinds of people here and I love to look around.
Today, I ordered a crossaint melt and a watermelon heaven smoothie with pineapple. The melt was okay. They probably costco'ed everything, but who cares, it was like 3 bucks and that's what starbucks and almost every other cafe does. The watermelon heaven smoothie was good. If you like a lot of flavor and you like something really sweet, try jamba juice instead. I personally liked mine because it wasn't too sweet.
This place also hosts a lot of live bands and the like so I can't wait to come by here again when they have another cool event. It kind of reminds me of home in Berkeley with it's chill vibe but with way crappier coffee than berkeley does. But whatever, nothing competes with blue bottle, I suppose. As far as the whole "hipster" thing that everybody talks about- I don't see it, but maybe I went on a hipster free day. yay! -

To my friends who grew up in Riverside, the city is easily one of the most boring places in SoCal. I've experienced what they mean, so I didn't have very high expectations for anything here, especially in downtown. I was a bit surprised when I came to Back to the Grind and had a great experience.
This is your typical neighborhood hipster coffee shop, beautifully decorated with bookshelves, paintings, wood crafted ceilings, and a very unique attitude to it. The lady behind the counter handles the money as well as the drinks, so it can take a while especially if there's a line.
I refuse to drink coffee, so I ended up ordering the 2nd best thing: hot chocolate. I've been drinking instant Swiss Miss mixed with hot water for so long I forgot how good semi-real hot chocolate tastes (fully real being the pure melted chocolate they give you in Europe). The lady mixed a good amount of milk with cocoa powder and mixed in some whipped cream on top for a perfect blend.
If they're free, get a chance to sit on the couches by the entrance. They're a lot comfier than the wooden chairs and perfect for a group of friends to just sit back, relax, and enjoy each others' company. -

Their tea is good and depending on what time of day you go in, the atmosphere is nice. I love the bookshelves and the fact that they serve some vegan sweets. However, be careful what time you go and and who your server is! Both the guys who've served me were great, really nice and helpful. There was a girl, though, who was a total b**ch. I stood in line for 10 minutes while the ONE guy in front of me flirted with her. When I realized he wasn't ordering, I tried to go up to the counter and was told to "wait my turn" while she finished flirting. I ordered one of their smoothies, which then took her 20 minutes to make because she just wouldn't stop talking to that guy! TWENTY MINUTES for a smoothie! It was ridiculous! And totally not worth the wait.
Stick to their tea and sweets and you'll be fine, but their coffee isn't worth it and watch out for who's behind the counter. -
Review from Miguel R.
This coffee house has a real cool facade and interior! I mean really cool! It's kind of like something I would expect in Pasadena! It has the look of another time from the past. They have cool art up on the walls and some cute colorful tables. They've got nice large windows which let the light in just nice! There is a long bar and different items are served.
I was here on a weekend to visit the ArmaNaco and it was empty since so many of the UC Riverside students in town decide to go home. That pretty much affected the ambience.... Still two apparent strangers were chatting. It seems like a place with cool people.
Sadly, the chai I ordered was simply the worst I have ever had anywhere.... It tasted like a creamy weird apple cider and it was super sweet.... I also ordered a cranberry scone and sad to say it was less tasty....far less tasty than even the Starbuxxx ones....
I would give this place two stars except that the environment is really cool.
Nearby parking is not free but it is on weekends. -

When I walked in I thought, "Man, finally a place to get good coffee in the Inland Empire." No...
The place looks great and has a nice vibe to it. I love the bookcases filled with books. The menu looks great with a bunch of vegetarian and vegan options. Great place to study and everyone is friendly.
But this is a coffee shop, and if the coffee isn't good, then my experience is bad.
I tried the things I usually try at coffee shops, a coffee and an americano. I want to know what type of beans they use and how they make their coffee. Second, I want to see if they pull a shot correctly...
The coffee comes out of a heat-container. I was expecting a place that has great coffee to at least do a hand pour, french press, or something. I'm not asking for a syphon. The shots that were pulled for the americano were just so short. Afterwards, the guy uses the milk steamer to put hot water in my americano...I've never seen that before.
I love the place because the vibe it has. But if they started to do hand pours with V60's and served fresh ground coffee, this place would be booming. That's just my opinion.
When it comes to coffee, I hate to say it, but I wouldn't come here. -

Cerritos, CA
The decor with all the bookcases and armchairs is nice. It has a nice feel. When walked in, I thought, "I would study here. I might even hang out here." But that only lasted until I had their coffee. How can you call yourself coffee house when you serve terrible coffee?
Verdict: Just stick to your local Starbucks for your caffeine fix. -

i have to say that i truly love their coffee................however what i dont like is all the people hanging outside of the grind asking for money. its not that i have something against them, is just that most times a barely have enough for my self, so they make me feel bad and i sometimes just take my coffee to go so i dont have to deal with them. i gave them four stars because i love the feel of the place, the customer service is not bad and i love their coffee. i also know that they probably cant do anything about the people hanging outside their place.

Review from Tara D.
Very cool little local coffee shop...the kind that feels like it's really a oasis for artsier/edgier types in a city not exactly renowned for its culture (I grew up in a town that wasn't either, but we also had one cool, funky coffee shop, and this place reminded me of it.)
I was there at 8 in the morning and it was quiet, but I could imagine open mike nights and similar happenings going on there, too.
The coffee I had was good but not exceptional. Didn't try the food.
I liked the sense of place a lot. I also liked the little patio area in the back where two guys were playing chess. -

Riverside, CA
I was here at least twice a week as an undergrad, pretty much every day during finals. What I love most about the grind is the atmosphere. Conducive for pretty much anything- paper writing, studying, chilling with friends, a date (yep, I had a couple of those adorably awkward coffee house dates) and even a bitchin' show every now and then (the basement doubles as an art space/mini concert venue). I just love coming here. Now, as a grad, I don't get to as often... mainly because I don't live in Bannockburn anymore, and can't get on the bus right in front of my apartment and be dropped off right down the street from the grind!
But anyways, the food and drink... dear god. If you want coffee, you either make it yourself or you come here. The coffee bean around the corner, as well as all of the starbucks around are disgraceful. If you want a good, strong cup of coffee or a hand made (without icky mystery powder) drink, come here, at least once, you won't be sorry! And the pastries... wow. So good. I'm not vegan, but I find myself craving the vegan chai latte cupcakes I used to get there... yummy, SO good. They also sell food and snacks, like the hummus, which is freshly made by one of the baristas everyday.
It's hard for me to make recommendations, because it's been so long, but definitely check this place out. You won't regret it!
(also... I used to work in a coffeehouse, kudos to the guy who made me my espresso con panna without question!) -

A refreshing breath of hip air.
Been heading here for over 5 years now and have nothing bad to say about it.
Coffee is strong and espresso drinks are great and there is an amazing assortment of non coffee things to drink and bites to eat. The importance of service with a smile is definitely not lost here. Which is also a major draw for me. It's the kind of place you can establish yourself outside of your home, a place where the owner cares about your day or how your family is doing. It's a little thing that I am finding is slowly being phased out of a lot of businesses, the caring part of interacting with your customers.
B2TG is my choice for coffee when I need somewhere with plenty of tables, free wifi (for customers, he guards his password like a secret alter-ego) and a relaxed and chill atmosphere with good music playing in case I forget my headphones. There's also an outdoor patio area. A great reason to support your local coffee shop and to get away from the home office.
And if you really needed any more reasons to go there, they also have an active nightlife with local bands playing in the large basement like old school underground punk shows from my past. He might even take you on in a game of Gallaga. -

Riverside, CA
I usually go to this place whenever my classmates and I want to study in a group. The shop is quite large, and there's so many places to sit with books and a laptop.
The ambiance is great, but not really conducive to studying when they're having events. Some events are really good to attend, so check their event calendar whenever you get the chance, especially if you like local artists or bands :)
As someone who has worked with coffee for a good amount of time, I can honestly say I'm not a huge fan of their coffee. I've tried different types of drinks, but then I usually opt for a tea or even a smoothie. What I love about their food and drink options is that there's variety. They have cafe and bakery type foods, which is great especially when you've been studying all day. They also have dessert menu items as well gelato (which I'm a sucker for)!!
This is an awesome place to chill with your friends, study, or check out their many events. -

Okay sure parking sucks but what do you expect form an establishment in the middle of downtown.
I absolutely love this place. I have had the pizza, the croissants, and the sandwiches which are pretty good for a coffee bar. My go to drink here is the Thai Iced Tea. I love it here especially when you can choose what kind of milk you want with no added cost. I did notice that the baristas never steam the milk for the lattes.. which is which I give a four star rating..
Yes the people behind the bar do seem to have an attitude sometimes but there is plenty of couches and space to lounge on in the establishment.
Recommend this for the young people :) -

Riverside, CA
The best chai in town, but that's not really saying much amid a sea of primarily bland/franchise options. The open mic is pretty hopping, though the talent is hit-and-miss as with most open mics. The atmosphere is fairly stock for a local coffee shop: over-priced art on the walls from students & residents at UCR & RCC, smoking hipsters on the patio nursing their coffee all night. If you can stomach overhearing lots of pseudo-intellectual convos and can put up with the crust punks and faux-homeless dishing disapproving stares at you because you've showered within the last two days, then you'll be alright. They are open late, though I wouldn't say its a good place to study or anything like that. There is too much noise & constant movement around you to get any real work or reading done. It best serves as a hangout or meeting spot for a date or low-key meeting.

Riverside, CA
Cute place with good sandwiches. The live music was very good. The only complaint I have is with the number of homeless people who kept coming in and sitting around us on the couches. They didn't buy any food or drinks. They just sat there looking crazy and leering at all of the women. Management didn't seem to care and did nothing to stop it. My friend was worried about getting lice or bed bugs from the couches. We will walk over to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf next time....

Phenomenal atmosphere for the coffee drinkers. No matter who you are or how you live your life, here they make everyone feel welcomed and comfortable. They host many events such as live music, chess night, Ukelele lessons, poetry nights, and other themed parties.

Came here once. Very interesting decor and interesting people. Gets 4 stars due to the unique atmosphere for a coffee shop in downtown riverside. Came on a quiet day, so it was ideal for studying.

great place to mingle too!

the coffee is alright. i am sure it differs from one day to another. idk. i had really good coffee and really bad coffee there. I dont like to gamble when it comes to my coffee but it really depends on who is serving and helping you.

loved this place for the ambiance. Reminds me of a nice San Francisco style coffee house. Old building, lots of couches. Lots of activitys all week, open mic night, live bands, even AA meeting on Sundays. Hung out on the couch drinking a pretty strong caramel ice blended for over an hour. Will go back.
Parking kind of a pain though, but we were there on a weekend so street parking was free. -

Very hip and trendy coffee house. There is plenty of seating available inside, patio area and a cute upstairs area. You will find an eclectic variance of crowd ranging from the local Riverside college student to artists. The parking is not the greatest. They have a large menu to choose all sorts of snacks to go with your coffee. This place is definitely worth the visit.

Sitting in here now, and yeah its chill. Just witnessed a crazy being kicked out and a shady looking man walk by mumbling "this is why I'm hot." I will definitely say this, this is a GREAT place to people watch. The coffee is really good and drinks are well made. The pastries look amazing but, don't judge a book by it's cover, really.. Our lemon cake tasted like it was from a box mix and the fruit tart was soggy and covered in a thick gel like substance. And if you want a fountain drink you're looking at $2.50 and 85 cents a refill. But then again shame on us for ordering a soda in a coffee shop, right?
P.S: A couple of vegan and gluten free desserts that look yum! But... be mindful, looks can be deceiving.Comment from Talene S. of Back to the Grind 4/11/2011

Seeking refuge after making the idiotic decision to go to the Mission Inn on Christmas (all of Riverside County was there), we stumbled upon this fantastic coffee shop a block away.
The interior was large and very cool. It had the vibe of a neighborhood coffee shop but on a large scale. One side has the brick wall and a long wooden bar where they serve the coffee and pastries while the entire opposing wall is a library. Unique tables occupy the center. There are couches and artwork on the wall near the entrance.
My companion's latte and my hot chocolate were both superb. Light years better than you would get at any corporate chain. The barista was friendly and quick.
Just sitting here relaxed me after all the chaos and insanity that I had gone through a block away. Big thumbs up for this coffee joint. -

If I would have reviewed this place a year ago, I would have given it maybe 4 stars, but unfortunately it's down to 2 stars.
I came here a few weeks ago with my boyfriend, and my opinion of this place had changed the second we walked through the door. It smelled like cleaning products and cigarette smoke.
The coffee was NOT hot, it was barely even warm. I don't remember the barista even steaming the milk for my latte. So the coffee was cold, and besides that, it wasn't very good.
I used to think this place was so cute. I thought it was a cool place for college students to go on their breaks (both the junior college and the university are within a few miles), but this time when I looked around it looked more like a hangout for crackheads and bums. It was almost scary. I didn't want to be in there for more than 5 minutes.
I will add, though, that the owner (I think) has always been really friendly. I do like him a lot.
It is a shame, because I used to think much better of this place. -

I must say I did enjoy my Rasberry Smoothie. It tasted like a Juice it Up Razzmataz. I do think they are a bit pricey...$4.25 for a 16 oz. The bottom of the drink held all the syrup, signaling a lack of well-mixed content. I also had a small vegan pizza. The pizza was interesting, for it was my first vegan meal ever. It was obviously a frozen pizza, placed into a small oven. Though the flavors weren't all there, I think it was alright.
As far as ambiance goes....its an interesting place. Very hipster like and decorated with random things. I kind of felt like I was at an edgy thrift store.
There were a lot of bums there, so be wary. I would visit again, but not often.Comment from Talene S. of Back to the Grind 9/24/2011

THE most authentic coffee house in Riverside. In a land of chain everything, this is a nice little haven in Downtown Riverside. How did I stumble upon this place? I didn't. Hah! My hipster in the making co-worker recommended it. He mentioned the live music at night. In the day time, this place is dead. At night cute old men come out to play chess, college kids are on their laptops, and then you have the peeps that are just there to talk/lounge. Music in the basement, study area upstairs, and patio area for the smokers. Ambiance reminds me of what I imagine a coffee shop in the East would look like, one large brick wall, high ceiling that gives the loft vibe, and interesting local(?) art. What else do you need? Good drinks? They do that here! Great coffee and teas.
Come for the drinks, stay for the ambiance.
They have a lot in the back. It's hard to find parking though :/ -

My esteem for Riverside was raised immeasurably by this place. It has a groovy bohemian vibe, and an excellent menu of espresso beverages prepared by a barista with excellent skills.
Thoroughly enjoyed my latte but the pastry/breakfast selection was limited and my scone was pretty meh. So I wouldn't put this on the list of best breakfasts in the Inland Empire, but I would definitely return for coffee and a fun place to chill out. -

The ambiance of the place is pretty awesome. I didn't think I could find a place like this in Riverside. I love the huge wall of books especially. They have wifi and a good amount of tables and such so it would be a good place to study.
For the drinks, I tried their cafe Au lait and my friend got the Thai iced tea and both were good. The worker was extremely friendly and sociable. A definite go back :) -

My favorite place to be, honestly.
I love the people there (workers and customers.) I've made a lot of friends an the shop. It is a strange place, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.
It's an excellent place to go if you're a fan of anything artsy.

Strange place and not-so-great coffee.
Had a bagel that was anything but fresh - it was either a few days old or had been frozen - worst bagel I've had in a couple of years. Coffee was mediocre at best. They offered no choice of beans nor did they offer any choice of preparation so I simply cannot see anything special about this place. I've been spoiled by coffeehouses that deserve 4 and 5 stars (Blue Bottle, Ritual, Intelligentsia, etc.) but this one doesn't even come close to being in the same league.
I went mid-morning on a Sunday. The place looked good enough - large space in an older building downtown. There were a little over a dozen people there so it seemed rather quiet and empty. Very strange vibe though. Most of the people seemed more like strung out dregs than a normal coffeehouse crowd. I was ignored as I walked to the long bar trying to figure out from which end of the bar to order but kept walking to the far end where I spotted a couple ordering. I was promptly ordered to form a line along the bar - a command repeated several time during my visit. The muzak was barely audible so the line up orders became a key part of the ambiance.
There is a wall of books which seemed cool at a glance but I took a closer look while I was waiting for my bagel. Nothing inspiring at all. Pretty much everything was stuff you'd be lucky to sell for a quarter at a yard sale. The bar itself is lined with advertising signs - tacky.
Finally went back to the bar as it seemed there had been more than enough time to get a bagel - it was ready but I had not been told where to pick it up and nobody bothered to speak up. Apparently keeping an orderly line is the only worthy announcement - not letting a customer know their order is ready. Service just was disconnected - not the quality barista and other types who would be on top of things on most places
And for the record, this is NOTHING like a SF coffee house as another reviewer mentioned.Comment from Talene S. of Back to the Grind 4/11/2011

Move out of the way Starbucks and all you chain coffee shops. This is truly what a coffee place should be.
I just love the ambiance to this place. not only are you surrounded by books on shelves but this place is so open! High ceilings and even a place for a band to play on another level adds to it. When I came they put an art gallery in the basement.
Like other said, this is a local business but a local business at its best. The coffee is done well and the pastries are good. Staff is helpful and I believe awhile back I had gotten a free taro card reading! Talk about random. Definitely a favorite spot of mine when I went to school up there.
Its just a great place to chill and relax. The furniture is eclectic and grunge. While the music always wasn't my taste, its just nice seeing the crowds coming out from time to time. Highly recommended and I'll probably come back to visit when I'm in town again. -

It definitely has a coffee house feel and seems like a great place to hang out. It being a local place is definitely a place to hang out in Riverside! So MAYBE I shouldn't have read all these reviews before coming here because I had some pretty HIGH expectations to fill when I walked in.
I was disappointed. The place looked awesome in the pictures, but when I walked in here, I was surprised. They had advertisements EVERYWHERE. Now, I understand that they have to make their money somehow but they should dedicate a specific wall for this. I mean there were even advertisements on the CUPS.
The guy who helped us was pretty cool when he wasn't talking to his friend and playing Donkey Kong. He helped us every time we went up (which was a good 5 times since we were trying EVERYTHING.)
The coffee was very mediocre. And the tea wasn't special. Their chicken tenders, now those were good.
I wanted to love this place, I really did. -
