ZOMG.
Vegan soft-serve that's better than the "real" thing.
Pastries to die for.
curry samosa=perfection.
Staff is always lovely.
Seating is quaint in this small gem of a shop. -
Review from Aaron W.
I came face-to-face with a gauntlet of delectable pastries and desserts. I ultimately chose a cinnamon roll ($3.25). The friendly woman at the counter mentioned it was one of the most popular menu items. She asked if I would like the cinnamon roll warmed up...better believe it! Nothing like a warm cinnamon roll in my belly!
I loved the burst of cinnamon here, and warming up the cinnamon roll is the ideal way to feast on this treat. Despite seeing granulated sugar and icing coating the top, it wasn't overly sweet, a bit surprising to me. Yes, I've had softer and lighter cinnamon rolls (heck, even some that are more cinnamon-y), but this was still very good and should be commended.
Some of the other popular items include the Peanut Butter Amaranth Bar ($2.50), the Chocolate Almond Toffee Bar ($3), and the gluten-free cheesecakes (around $5/slice; I saw lemon and blueberry vanilla on my visit). There's even a soy-free classic apple pie ($4.25/slice). Mmm...pie.
If in a more savory mood, they have a grilled cheese sandwich for $5, using Daiya vegan cheddar or pepperjack. Pair it with soup for a few extra bucks. No espresso machine, but they have coffees and teas (both hot and cold). Back to Eden also has vegan ice creams.
A pleasant first experience, and I plan to stop by again in the future. -

I can't believe someone gave this place a "hipster" ambiance rating. Seriously?
It's like walking into your Aunt Edna's really awesome, yet super cute kitchen somewhere in rural Georgia. Cozy, warm, inviting...all that good stuff. It's got style, baby.
Regarding the bitching about pricing at establishments like this: I'd like to remind the kind customer what it costs to make good, healthy food for you. Some people appreciate a trade, while others will continue to expect someone to hand over their livelihood in a paper cup for a dime.
Aside from that, I must say that everything in this bakery is mind-blowing. My personal favorite: Rose water sugar cookies...get you some! -

I am so happy I made it to this Vegan Gluten-free Wonderland in Portland. I'm going to have happy dreams of this place forever until I can come back and visit again. EVERYTHING in this place is Vegan GF and is amazing! It is a simple, cute cozy little cafe that everyone will fall in love with.
We had the Southwest Black Bean soup with a GF corn muffin! Delish:) And I also ordered a Vegan GF Hot Chocolate WITH GF Marshmallows and a Chocolate Vegan cupcake that was out-of-this-world. My hubby had the pumpkin whoopie pie and loved it as well. Can't wait to visit again. -

Was in the neighborhood and yelped a possible vegan/gluten free bakery in the area that would have the piece of cake I was craving. So glad I ended up here!
I really appreciate the fact that it's open until 9 pm. The cake was light and moist and the drip coffee was perfect.
Thank you, Back to Eden. I'll visit again soon! -

Definitely putting this place on my gluten free yumminess list.
Pumpkin Whoopie Pie. Good thing I bought 1 and left the store. Otherwise I would have asked for the rest of them.
They have really wonderful treats here that are organic, vegan, and gluten free. Including some awesome ice cream.
They also serve soups, so get the minestrone if you can. Super fantastic. -

Weird place, didn't fit my expectations.
Reviews had me hyped up about dining here, but when my mom and I walked in I felt cramped and disappointed. This place is a cafe - they'll serve you over priced items whose cost doesn't match the taste.
The lavender snicker doodle was pretty impressive, but we shared a hot chocolate because it was later and it wasn't anything that I'd like to experience again. $3.50 for a small? Come on! -
Review from Jen I.
i'll start this review the same way i started my review for vita cafe.
i was in town for a day and a 1/2 and i was at back to eden twice.
i made everyone go back the next morning so i could get my second dose of chocolate mint soft serve - unadorned, no toppings, as is, simply delicious.
sf is severely lacking in vegan soft serve. for the # of hippies in the bay area this is a shame! portland has completely taken over as vegan haven of the world.
i also sampled a friend's coconut cream pie and the peanut butter fudge.
the pie was rich and creamy. i never think twice about coconut cream pie. usually, if it doesn't have chocolate on it, i'm not into it but this pie was perfect and now i wished i had a 4th stomach to fit pie into while my other 3 stomachs worked on the soft serve, the vegan chicken and waffles i had for breakfast and the homemade vegan sausage i had consumed earlier in the day.
the peanut butter fudge was just ok though. super super sweet. not as creamy or peanut buttery as i'd like.
peanut buttery is a word.
i can't wait to come back and stuff my face again. -

The food here was delicious. I got a mini german chocolate cake to split with my man. It was incredible. The boutique-y feel is cute and friendly... lots of vegan cookbooks to peek at on the shelves. I was super impressed by the fact that they offer soft serve ice-cream... but, silly me, I haven't tried it yet. I will.
The ONLY thing that bugged me (literally) was the allowance of flies in the eating area. I mean... its not a cockroach problem... but still. I highly recommend they shut their doors or find a nontoxic pest repellent. It was pretty nasty having those flies all over.
Other than that, I loved the place. A bit pricey...but worth it. -
Review from Shalin D.
Okay, so maybe I'm the dissenting voice because I'm a bacon-fat swilling, chicken-thigh consuming, sushi-gobbling omnivore, but... this place wasn't that good.
I mean, I was a vegetarian for twenty years and I've had really great vegan snacks (Belmont Vegetarian in Worcester, MA) and really great vegan cookies (Soul Vegetarian in Chicago) but this place, in comparison. just serves mediocre pastries.
I ordered a lemon cake here and a friend got a couple of cookies. The cookies crumbled in my hands and had a sandy texture that did not register well. I guessed it was because the binding in vegan cookies is less durable than the eggs used in non-vegan cookies. But, if vegan is your shtick, shouldn't you try to find a better binder? And the taste? Like burned brown sugar. The lemon cake, admittedly, was better. Tart, creamy, and light, it went down well. But, after I finished it, I felt like I had sucked on a sponge sprayed with Lemon Pledge. Bad after taste.
I'm a big fan of vegetarian and vegan haunts. Sadly, not this one. -
Review from Lucas C.
Good lord that blueberry cheesecake was good. I'm writing this review three days later and that is still all I've been thinking about. Well, that and the killer tempt milkshake they served up. Even for the $5 price tag I was completely on board given the quantity struggling to stay inside my glass.
Back to Eden has a quaint little store up on Alberta with piles of delectable treats to serve up. Place gets busy, so get there early, and recognize that it hardly matters what you order because either way, you'll leave amazed. -
Review from Laura E.
I am not vegan. Or gluten-free. I just married one. Sigh.
Usually, my husband's eating preferences make finding a dessert spot nearly impossible... unless he just wants to watch me eat something delicious - or unless I want to watch him eat something tasting of cardboard. But, our discovery of Back to Eden has quickly shown me that we are NOT in Phoenix anymore. I am certain that the Phoenix area has nothing rivaling this tiny little bakery. I have believed, for years, that vegan/GF baked goods had to taste... well... bland, at best. One chance visit here, and I'm a convert. I must have repeated about 1000 times - "are you SURE this cheesecake is vegan? But it tastes GOOD!" Surprising, I know.
The array of treats was substantial, even though we ventured in late in the day. I am so excited to have a place that the Husband and I can both enjoy after a good meal. -

If I ate only vegan food I'd probably be able to appreciate this bakery more. I expected there would be more stuff to choose from. I got a cardamom raspberry muffin which was really good. It was soft and flavorful. The service was friendly too.
I was pleased to see their credit card minimum is only $4. The muffin was three dollars and the coffee was like two more bucks, but I suppose you should expect prices like that from a place that calls itself a bakery boutique.
I think it'd be cool to see more stuff incorporating fresh fruit like fruit tarts. -

Pumpkin Whoopie Pie. Lavender Snickerdoodle. Strawberry Almond Cupcake. VEGAN!! Need I say more?! Completely blows each and every other vegan bakery I have ever been to out of the water. Can't even compare. So delicious!!

I intentionally come here for the pina colada cheesecake- the flavor is to DIE for.
I find the prices average for a sweets shop. I want good ingredients, so I'm willing to pay a little bit more.
My only complaint is really their Foursquare deal- we wandered by & decided to try it out, just to be told that the person that created the deal no longer worked there, & they didn't want to honor it. Ask Foursquare for your login & have that removed :) -

Top notch establishment. Each time we have visited we have enjoyed several of their wonderful dessert items and loved every bite. We also ordered our daughters cupcakes for her party from Back to Eden and they were a big hit, we got mini cupcakes with Neopolitan frosting. The price for the large order of cupcakes was fair and reasonable (compared to other bakeries in town). The staff has also been very polite and helpful on each occasion (unlike many establishments in PDX). If we lived closer we might be there every day.

This place makes me want to open a vegan bakery. I love cheese too much to ever be totally vegan, but I could live with egg- and butter-less desserts for the rest of my life if they're like what's made here. I got a slice of lavender lemon poppyseed cake and some almond fudge with something else delicious in it I can't remember... but it was sure delicious. Both times I went the staff was rather aloof but by no means rude. The fact that they have plenty of cookbooks available - "here, we encourage you to do it yourself too" - is also pretty cool. Love it!

This is one of those places that operates in defiance of all that is expected from vegan fare. Let it never be said that vegan baked goods can't be better than the dairy-laden version, and if it *is* ever said, let this place be your rebuttal.
I'm a big fan of the butterscotch cookies here, and the pistachio ones are even better. I can't think of a place with better cookies, vegan or no. They're the perfect fine texture... not too crunchy or chewy, and they melt away in your mouth. I'd be all over a five-star review if I'd had a better sampling of the goods. But that will take another trip or two. Oh, darn... more delicious baked goods to eat...
This shop also carries Missionary Chocolates, and you can select whichever ones you like (read: they're not pre-packed with all the most bizzarre flavors like the boxes at Whole Foods) -- which is a total lifesaver if your valentine is vegan. Well, that's assuming your valentine isn't also a heartbreaking bastard. (Yay bitterness!) If he is, just eat the goddamned chocolates yourself. You won't be sorry! -
Review from Daniel H.
Very cute vegan bakery. Had a delicious german chocolate cake here...by far one of the best I've ever had. This place has great hours too and the staff is friendly. Plus soft serve soy ice cream is definitely a plus, very few places in Portland do that and it needs to become a bigger trend.
Docking 1 star for the flies. There were a ton of them in there. We weren't all that bothered by them, but it really doesn't look good seeing them all swarming a bakery. B2E should really consider closing their front door / getting a screen door to prevent that. Plus the prices aren't the cheapest I've seen...but it did taste really good.
I'll definitely come back. -
Review from Jenny K.
I was excited this morning to hit another bakery. Fast forward to the aftermath...I am sooo terribly disappointed. It even makes me sad..
Lavender, rose, pistachio...rare flavors I was planning to try. Wanted the marionberry whoopie pie.. No, not available. So, since we already drove all the way there, had to give them a try.
Pistachio cookie, pumpkin whoopie pie, lavender frosting poppy seed cupcake to go. Guess since it's vegan...means that it's more pricey. Pumpkin whoopie was small and $4. Waay too sweet!! Then tasted the cupcake...frosting was too sweet too...and more of a muffin than a cupcake.
The whoopie pies look HUGE in the yelp pics. It is sooo small in real life...and $4. OMG.
Pistachio sugar cookie was decent.
My worst experience in Portland. If I were vegan, it would be 5 stars just cuz it's vegan?? The best in vegan land?
service wasn't that great either. maybe because i didn't speak vegan? not even a welcoming smile or a thank you. that's a FIRST in portland since everyone except for this person has provided nothing but helpful customer service.
But far far from the best in terms of baked goods. Too far from it...when you compare taste and price.
Conclusion: If you aren't vegan, you will be disappointed.. this is not a 5 star bakery place.
NOTE: If you read the 5 star reviews of people who claim that this place is oh-so-great and that they are not vegan...notice...0 Friends, 1 Review (that one!!). someone's faking it...Listed in: Visiting Portland!!! =)

Review from Kedar D.
This is a great little vegan bakery/cafe. I came twice and had a variety of delicious things: a chocolate hazelnut cupcake; chocolate mousse pie; green tea whoopie pie; cheesecake.
All of the baked goods were tasty, though not quite perfect. For example, the green tea whoopie pie, while innovative, was a bit too strong. If they had brewed their green tea for slightly less time, or used a subtler variety, I think it would have been better. Similarly, the chocolate mousse pie, which kind of seemed like a french silk pie, had a crust that was just a tad too hard (it needed to be flakier), and the whipped topping was too heavy.
That said, and other vegans in Portland can confirm this, Back to Eden is the best vegan bakery in the city. -

This place is LEGIT.
I'm so proud to be a silly little vegan when I walk into this place.
And to think that I can have whatever the FUCK I want when I do...
well, it's just delightful.
Soft serve with hella toppings, whoopie pies, cupcakes, lavendar snickerdoodles.... I wish I could rock it everyday.
Thank you B2B.

Review from Bailey M.
Back to Eden gets "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" because the options for delish vegan baked goods are far and few between so it doesn't get much gooder than this!
I hadn't had apple pie in years, no exaggeration, so that's how I chose to try it out here. I loved the first bite of my pumpkin moon pie (after a few more I decided it was too sweet and was glad to be sharing) but when I took a bite of the apple pie my friend questioned the confused look on my face.
"I mean, I haven't had apple pie in so long but this tastes... ummm, different?"
She took a bite. She's had apple pie MANY times in the years that I've had none.
"Nope. That's what apple pie tastes like!"
Clearly my trained vegan taste buds have left something to be desired. It wasn't bad. I'm just weird. Obviously. I am making it a point to have more apple pies in my future so that this doesn't happen again.
OH! I almost forgot! As advised by yelp I mentioned yelp to get a discount and the cashier dude looked at me strangely and said "cool, does that mean something?" I was apparently the first person to do this. He knows better now. You're welcome.Listed in: All places vegan, all over!

Spectacular baked goods that are very friendly to my dietary restrictions. I fell over the first time I went in here and realized that *everything* is vegan (no dairy anywhere near this stuff), and a lot of it is gluten-free too. The flavour combinations are pretty impressive and nice treats, and I'm addicted to the frosting on the cakes & muffins. The selection is incredible - makes me wonder why there aren't more in town like these guys.
We've ordered cakes for birthdays here a few times, and one time we stood the GF/vegan strawberry lemon cake next to a full dairy-gluten-bearing cake and watched as the GF disappeared while the "real" cake was neglected. It's an amazing thing to see people enjoy these cakes *more* than "normal" ones.
The peanut butter-amaranth bar is a nice, filling mid-afternoon snack to keep you going.
The use of ingredients like lavender, pear, cardamom, pistachio and chai give a great variety of unique flavours to keep us interested and coming back. -

Rome wasn't build in a day and God supposedly took six days creating the whole world, right? I hope that begins to explain why this review has taken so. incredibly. long. for me to write, despite a sumptuous and decadent six month stint of scones (savory and sweet!), cookies, fudge, pumpkin whoopies, and gluten-free cheesecake.
Anyone who knows me will say that I'm prone to hyperbole. A little too often I'm guilty of biting into a baked good, letting my eyes roll back in my head, and exclaiming that it's the best thing to happen to me in MY ENTIRE LIFE - NO I'M SERIOUS.
But, to be honest? I've never had a less than stellar treat from these wonderful people. Taste, perfect texture, and dizzying variety aside, let's focus on what, to me, makes B2E so f'n special - the creativity. Although I'm perfectly happy to wrap my hands around a giant, perfectly moist chocolate chip cookie, I've been blown away by the interesting flavor combinations in the display cases here. Combinations that sometimes seem questionable, but always end up delicious.
Cinnamon raisin pumpkin seed muffins? Yes. Chocolate lavender cupcakes? Yum. Strawberry hazelnut? Ginger coconut cardamom? Oui, mon dieu! Apricot white chocolate! Coconut rosewater! Chocolate rosemary sea salt tarts! Also, my new favorite cookie of all time - the spelt trail mix cookie.
I will let these (lovely, sweet, friendly) people serve me damn near anything, because they've convinced me that they can do no wrong.
For you Doubting Thomases, they also make (vegan) quiches, savory tarts, and calzones. And every manner of soft serve (with a mind-boggling assortment of toppings). And coffee. And tons of gluten-free/soy-free options.
Not to mention that this all comes wrapped up in the most darling environment with a selection of cookbooks, kitchen gadgets and other goodies to peruse while you wait for your dripped-to-order coffee.
Dare I say? Yes, I do - best vegan bakery ever. IN THE WORLD. -
Review from Geanna M.
I live near this charming [vegan] boutique bakery and stop in at least once a week. The almond butter fudge is a must-have for me, as in "I must have it or I will die". Their inventory of gluten-free treats has increased exponentially, so those (like me) that are gluten-intolerant can enjoy even more items.
Prices are very reasonable, there is free wi-fi for customers, and the entire staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about their products.
Try: any of their special cheesecake flavors, such as peanut butter and jelly. A very outspoken, omnivorous friend of mine tasted it and deemed it the best "cheesecake" he'd ever had. If that's not a statement to its level of delicious-ness, I don't know what is. -

Let me spell out a few words and I'll let you make your own mind up:
Pistachio Cupcakes with Rosewater frosting
Lavender Snicker-doodles
Rosewater Sugar Cookies
Listen, I could go on here but the fact is, this place is brilliant. Not only are the treats offered here lovingly crafted but the offerings here are great for those of us who don't want gluten, dairy or other ingredients getting in the way of satisfying our sweet cravings. There are no culinary sacrifices made here in the name of inventive flavor experiments, you will be fully satisfied with whatever you choose. -

Pumpkin Whoopie Pie. Nom. Nom. Nom.
That's it, that's my review. Nom Nom.
Okay, okay. So the whoopie pie isn't always there, but you should probably check every day just to be certain. Besides the whoopie pies, I can also vouch for vast awesomeness of the coconut ice cream (so can my canine pal) and turnovers, and cakes and whatever else I've shoved in my mouth hole since breaking the seal. I will vouch for it all.
I can't ever remember if what I got was vegan or gluten -free or both. The point is that I don't need to. Everything is divine.
The staff is extremely energetic and friendly. The space is adorable and homey. They don't keep baker's hours, so you can get your fix at 8pm. As an added bonus, if you fall for the Facebook/Twitter trap, you should probably add them. They let you know about every tasty morsel that comes out of the oven, and every special they put on.Listed in: Alberta Street Lovin'

I've already established my unabashed love and adoration for the soft serve dairy-free soy ice cream.
As if that wasn't enough, I now have to rave about the baked treats too?
They sit there, all sassy and provocative in their glass cases; cookies, toffee bars, cakes, pies, whoopie pies... come on now WHOOPIE PIES?
I'm swooning for the treat that I had today. For those of you who savor these kinds of treats I hope you're sitting down... Chocolate Coconut Cheesecake - yep, I wrote it and it exists!
Mind boggling and delicious: velvety layer of chocolate on top, very cheesecake-like center with the right amount of coconut, a delightfully nutty crust at the bottom, all combined to create heavenly sweet treat bliss.
In addition to this ridiculously good treat, my family and I have delighted in:
- Whoopie Pies
- Toffee Bars
- Cookies
- Macaroons
All of these are VEGAN and there is an abundance of gluten/wheat-free treats.
In addition to the sweet treats is the equally sweet staff. Every person that we have encountered at this store has been an absolute treat to interact with.
Thankfully I live far enough to only make it in about once a week otherwise I'd be there EVERY day.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Oh hello Pumpkin Whoopie Pie. Where have you been all my life?
The lovely woman working told us that these treats are a seasonal thing that have just come back. Thank the good sweet lord. After reading so many rave reviews about them I probably would have cried if they were not on the menu. It was a sweet sensation overload! I made it last throughout the day, eating it in sections to prolong it's presence in my life.
I am a big fan. -

Cupcakes.
I was walking down Alberta, minding my own business, when I saw a bakery case loaded with cupcakes.
I really like cupcakes. They are the perfect food. Having zero willpower, I turned a sharp left into Back to Eden.
There were two middle-aged women being waited on ahead of me. Yack, yack, chat, chat. They would NOT shut the "F" up. Yackity, yackity, chattity, chattity. "My cat's name is Mr. Whiskers. He's my little nom, nom, nummy loves..." ARRRRRGH!
12 to 6 elbows are illegal in the UFC, so I refrained from dropping one on each of their gray, thinning noggins. They finally got the heck out of the way long enough for me to check out the goods.
I secured myself a delicious, chocolate frosted cupcake from the nice man behind the counter. All was right with the world. Lives were spared. It was a good day.
Thank you, Back to Eden Bakery. -

Once again I was lured in by my senses to a really tasty selection of vegan baked goods. And they do taste as good as they look! My favorite is the peanut butter amaranth bars which they do sell a lot of. Lucky for me I was there when they brought out a fresh batch! Yummm! I did end up buying too many and gained a couple of pounds since I could not simply eat one of them in a sitting.
Their focus is on organic local ingredients - some treats are organic raw agave or fruit sweetened with a smaller amount of cane juice. The amaranth bars are sweetened with brown rice syrup. They also have just cane juice sweetened treats.
A place to go for healthy food / good treats.1 Previous Review: Show all »

What's up, hottest day of the year?
Smoothie was top priority; this pacific north-westerner took all the sunshine she could handle.
Back to Eden Bakery was hovering at the top of my 'Must Visit' list for awhile, so I decided to finally give it a go.
Upon arrival, I was immediately greeted by two friendly guys.
"You're a vegan bodybuilder?-" (taking note of my 'Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness' shirt) "-I'm a vegan body builder, too! Can you tell?"
The colorful menu was full of delicious options, but I had my mind set on a smoothie.
$5 for a refreshing berry smoothie, made by a super nice guy whom referred to me as his "little vegan body builder."
Yes, I will absolutely be returning.
And maybe I will even buy that recycled/ handmade/ eco-friendly plate I was eyeing! -

I guess if you're a vegan this is an automatic 5-star for the soft serve. Hard to find elsewhere and not only that, you can get SWIRL! I found the base a little bit on the slimier consistency, which was a bit suboptimal, but maybe this is as good as vegan soft serve gets?
Pretty disappointed with their pour over coffee though. I received a cup with grounds all over the bottom. Hazelnut milk was too light to really add any dimension to my cafe au lait.
Need to invest in an espresso maker.Comment from John B. of Back to Eden Bakery Boutique 2/23/2011

This is the type of place I want to give five stars, but can't allow myself to do it. Based on atmosphere, customer service, mission of the business...it's all five stars, but when it comes down to it, I put more weight on the taste of the food.
Here's what I've had, the cost, and the rating:
++Missionary raspberry truffle (favorite thing I've had, small, but knock you over good) 3.50
++Can't remember the type of cupcake or the cost, but my husband couldn't tell the difference
-cookies and cream cupcake (dry, lacked pizazz) 2.50
-/+coconut cream pie (moussey middle, others liked it pretty well) 4.00
- peanut butter cheesecake (worst out of the bunch, bad consistency. I don't think cheescake can be faked)) 4.50
-peanut butter fudge (would not get again) 2.00
-/+ Toffee bars (Dry, but decent, I would not order it again for the price) 4.50
If you are vegan, I am sure you will be happy to call this place a safe haven, My friends who had samplings (Not vegan) were not impressed. I, being dairy-free, was not very impressed either, but I know they have great intentions. -

My hubby was in Portland for business and stopped by Back to Eden for me since he knows this is my absolute favorite bakery in the entire U.S.!!! He picked me up a rosewater cookie and a peanut butter bar with chocolate and peanuts on top. They were both to die for!!! The cookie had the perfect about of rose water in it! It just had a slight hint of the rose water and it invigorated the senses!! The peanut bar is definitely one of the best comfort foods I've had in a long long time! Perfect peanut butter flavor... not too overpowering. The chocolate on top is a nice thick layer but is light and not too heavy. It compliments the peanut butter bottom very well!!
Mr. N. said he had the hot chocolate with the hazelnut milk while he was there and that it was super tasty (my words not his I believe his words were really fing good). I wish he could have brought some of that yummy hot chocolate back for me!!1 Previous Review: Show all »
