I found Back to Basics a year ago through a Groupon for a massage and then decided to have a chiropractic exam (I'd never seen a chiropractor before) and was so happy I did! Dr. Ryan made me feel comfortable from the get go! This may sound cheezy but I honestly didn't think I'd ever live life without constant neck pain...but there is such a thing!
Both Dr. Ryan and Dr. Tom are very professional and care tremendously about what they do and their patients! I've gone through the Med-X program to help with my forward head posture and am now doing it for my lower back to strengthen it and rehab a pulled muscle!
Phil works wonders in massage therapy. I work out hard every day and Phil truly helps to repair my muscles!
I would recommend Back to Basics to anyone! -

I've been going to and working with chiropractors as a means of general health for over 20 years, so needless to say I'm a huge believer in the benefits of a good chiropractor. But I've found that not all Chiropractors are created equal.
That's where Dr. Ryan & Dr. Tom come in. The guys at Back to Basics are around wonderful! It's nice to see two highly trained professionals who are educated, good hearted, and ethical.
The approach at Back to Basics is quite unique. They specialize in the strengthening of the neck and low back using a medical line of exercise equipment called Medx. The idea behind this is to strengthen two of the most problematic areas of the body thus eliminating/reducing symptoms and a chance of future injury. Makes sense to me!
I've been working with the Back to Basics team for several months to strengthen my neck, back, and improve my posture and am very happy with the results. Thanks guys!! -

In Southern California, chiropractors are a dime a dozen. Chiropractors who don't show you tangible proof of what is causing the problem, how to fix it so you don't have to keep returning every week forever, and who can't show you if the treatment you've been given has helped you improve....those are the standard.
Dr. Ryan and Dr. Tom are genuinely interested in helping in getting to the root of the problem, treating the problem, and keeping the patient involved every step of the way. Their goal is to help the patient learn to help themselves by teaching them what needs to be done to stay strong and healthy. They are not another clinic trying to convince you that the path to wellness is to visit regularly and frequently for adjustments for the rest of your life.
After a car accident left me in pain, I was skeptical that I'd find an honest chiropractor out there, but I knew I needed treatment. Back to Basics was close and took my insurance, so I gave them a call. Robin answered all of my questions over the phone and made room for me to be seen immediately.
Once there, I welcomed me in warmly as if I was family. Since my accident happened in someone else's car, my auto insurance was paying for my treatment. I was unsure about the process, nervous and in pain, but everything was easily explained to me. I was immediately at ease then and continue to be every time I visit or phone.
I underwent a complete evaluation to test my strength and flexibility, see what was normal and what was causing me pain. X-rays were taken of my spine and sent out to be evaluated by a professional.
Between my initial visit and the follow-up visit, all results were shared with me - I was completely involved in the process at every step.
My treatment involved deep tissue massage, e-stim therapy, ice, adjustments, and eventually MedX. At the beginning of MedX treatment, I was given an evaluation via a computer hooked up to the machine. Firm figures were given for each MedX session on my level of improvement and where work was still needed to get up to a healthy, acceptable level of strength and flexibility. Not only did this garner credibility with me, but was the best evidence to my insurance company that the treatment was working and still needed for recovery. It is far more effective than any other forms of physical therapy I have ever had to do in the past and my measured results can easily prove it.
In my deep tissue treatment, Phil was (and is!) a godsend and a true professional. He has incredible knowledge of the human body and how everything is connected. Without my even saying a word, he knows exactly what to do and how much pressure to apply. In continuing with the involvement of the patient, he readily explains everything he is doing, why he is doing it, and what the body will do as a result. Deep tissue work isn't the type of blissful, relaxing massage people think it is -- it is true therapy to help the body to get back to a normal, functioning, pain-free state.
I haven't done any acupuncture treatment, but from just getting to know Jay on my visits, I know he's incredibly talented at what he does. Even more impressive - I've never been a patient of his, yet he still knows my name, who I am, a little bit about me, and will ask how I am -- genuinely hoping I am well.
Dr. Ryan and Dr. Tom are fantastic personally and professionally. They go above and beyond for each and every one of their patients, truly caring about the wellness and recovery of every person who walks in the door. I didn't feel like a patient, I felt like family, and that's an incredibly rare, but wonderful thing to find in Southern California!
I feel truly blessed to have Dr. Ryan, Dr. Tom, Phil, and the entire team at Back to Basics there for me and my physical health and couldn't recommend them more! -

I have been to chiropractors, therapist, etc etc for the past 10 years, none have I found can do the work that the people at Back to Basics provide. They are just AMAZING!!!!
Dr. Tom is fantastic, Star (Massage) is the best I've ever had, and Jay (Acupuncture) is life changing!!!!
Best of all they are constantly communicating with each other to ensure that the patient is getting the best service each and every time.My mother in law and husband are now big fans as well!!!
This is one place I can't stop talking about and recommending to people. Make the visit you won't be disappointed!!!
-PS: They are available Saturdays as well which is an amazing plus!!! -

I have been to chiropractors on and off since I was 8 years old, so I know fully well how a neck or a back injury can be a show stopper. Dr. Tom and Dr. Ryan are amazing, unpretentious (they introduce themselves without the "Dr.") and actually care about healing their patients. I have never been to a chiropractor who is a trained radiologist before! They took x-rays, showed me my spine and how it was mis-aligned and how they were going to go about treating it. If I ever have to get treated somewhere else, I'll probably be disappointed because Tom and Ryan take it to a new level.

I had been to a few places before I found - thank goodness - Back to Basics. Definately a cut above anything else in terms of the wellness approach, their skills, and the education that backs The offices have a very positive vibe, they are just great people as well as great doctors. Also I have had instances where I needed massage or acupuncture or specific strenght training for a specific injury, and they have in-house the best of the best in terms of permanent staff experts like Jay and Phil. Its great to know they have the resources to address any issue I might have without needing to look elsewhere again for someone I can trust. The clinic is beautiful with the treatment rooms having full glass views, and being in the heart of Newport Beach I was worried it might be super expensive, but that is not the case at all, it is just an upscale experience with very honest down to earth doctors. Once you find Dr. Tom and Dr Ryan and Back to Basics you will have the best treatment possible and never need to worry about looking around or who to trust. Thats a great feeling.

I found Back to Basics on YELP because they offered a coupon for the first visit. I was familiar with Chiropractic care and how beneficial it is to my lifestyle.
WOW, were they very welcoming and super helpful. I met with Dr. Tom and he was very informative on my situation and how to provide the best care for an affordable price.
I felt that this chiropractic office was different than others because they offer more of a wellness care type of services. Its not just an adjustment. Its all about strengthening as well as adjusting.... the complete package.
I would recommend this place to everyone. I tried to even find one for my mom in San Diego but there really is not one similar. -

I'm just going to say it, I hate being adjusted. It freaks me out. I'm the worst chiropractic patient alive, probably. Yet somehow the doctors at Back to Basics have figured out a way to get me to keep coming back: they are extremely talented and gentle. Dr. Ryan and Dr. Tom not only have great skill, but they are also thorough in their examinations and kind and supportive in their healing. They are not pushy nor preachy, but relaxed and knowledgeable and have a way about them that eases you into a better state of being.
I have also spent many hours with their massage therapists and believe that they are some of the best around. They are professional and timely and yield their strength and energy in miraculous ways.
And to round out the practice, Jay, the acupuncurist and herbalist, is a completely unique and powerful healer. Although I find his exact methods of healing hard to describe, I highly recommend him to treat all types of ailments. I promise you will not be disappointed.
All in all, Back to Basics is the complete wellness package. -

San Diego, CA
These guys are the greatest. I had a lingering back injury, and I had seen two different chiropractors down in San Diego to try to get help, but nothing worked. I went to see Dr. Ryan and he was much more interested in getting to the heart of the problem than any other chiropractor I had seen. He really listened to what I was saying. He took my problem seriously and was committed to finding a solution. The staff was great and the office is a pleasant and professional environment. Dr. Ryan's treatment along with therapeutic massages made a world of difference, and I can now resume activities I have been unable to do for over a year. I will drive up from San Diego for my chiropractic care from now on, and I highly recommend Back to Basics to anyone looking for a new chiropractor.

Honest, professional, excellent communication, I am a happy new client. More science minded than other chiros. Happy with mix of strength conditioning and adjustment that Dr. Hewitt advises. Weekly visits recommended are twice a week for 6-8 weeks, then once a week for maintenance, but they are flexible. Visits include strength conditioning, eltro-pulse recovery and adjustment. No pressure for repeat visits or unnecessary visits. They prepared a workout for me as well. Also have massage available in house. All billed to insurance.

I have been a patient at Back To Basics for approximately 2 years. All the staff there are outstanding. Jay Chung , the acupuncturist is a natural healer and has helped me so much! Five months ago I had injured both my right and left rotator cuff muscles and couldn't even sleep on my sides. Jay worked with me and now I am fine and have no pain at all in either shoulder. Jay is also a very spiritual man and has helped me so much with my life in general. I highly recommend Back To Basics and especially Jay Chung!

TEAM OF EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUALS!!!!!
I have seen more chiropractic offices and massage therapists than I can count on both hands twice!! ;-) Anyway, Back to Basics is unbelieveable! You will just have to try it. :-) Dr. Ryan, Dr. Tom, Phil, Christina, Star, and Jay deserve a little more than a pat on the back daily.
This office in particular WILL LISTEN and they CARE. I'm sorry, that sort of stands out to me. If you share with the Dr.s and Therapists (Accupuncturist included, Dr. Jay ***** :-)) at Back to Basics, they will help you to work on your physical issues until they are better. You will be FUNCTIONING better. All the while they keep you up to date on what is going on.
I have seen them on and off and my friends can always tell that I feel better and have an "uplift" in my spirit. Well, unless you know, - this kind of good feeling is contagious. Consequently, the people around me feel better, too. Now, this type of environment is precious in this age of illness! (new viruses, diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure, cancers, etc.) I even yell at my kids a lot less, lol.
This level of positivity will continue into all aspects of your life and result in a quality of life that stops when you stop it = Result.higher level. I have seen Dr. Ryan, Dr. Tom, Christina, Star, and Phil whom are all higher functioning ;-).
So. if you want to take your QUALITY OF LIFE to another level, spill your guts and pour your heart out to the staff at Back to Basics and have a healthier and happier tomorrow, seriously.
I would always want to come back to visit Back to Basics no matter where life takes me and not only because maybe I have tried them all, lol. -
