Well, this piece of yumminess seems to be in the middle of no-where, but it's all good because their ribs - both beef and pork are delish!
Ate here before setting camp for a weekend of rafting on the American, then went back on the way home, too. If you're planning a trip in these parts to white water raft or simply passing by keep the Back Forty on your radar, you won't be disappointed. Friendly service and large servings! -

We hit Back Forty Texas BBQ on the way back from a day of white water rafting, so maybe we were just hungry from the adrenalin, but holy cow did this place ever hit the spot.
I want to note first of all that our group of 6 walked in at 7:40-ish, and they had a posted close time of 8 on Sundays. I've worked in food service and I have shared that special hatred for big groups coming in moments before closing. But none of the staff said a word or even hinted any displeasure, and in fact were very cheerful and friendly with us in spite of our late arrival. So, kudos for that, and thank you, if you're reading this.
With such a large group, we were able to sample a lot of foods on the menu. The pork ribs were ridiculously good, pretty much fall off the bone tender. Likewise, the brisket was fork-tender. The only miss was the chicken, which was pretty dry. The portion sizes were also, in the words of one of our group who is from Texas, "Texas-sized." For those of you who don't know, that means they were BIG! Like "plate the garlic mashed potatoes with an ice cream scoop" big.
After being stuffed full, we had a long drive back to the bay area ahead of us. Our waitress put on a fresh cup of coffee, and even poured some in a to-go cup for me.
In summary, great food and great service. If/when we're in the area again, I'm voting to stop here for dinner! -

I consider myself a BBQ snob, but this BBQ was pretty darned good.
I took the kids on family night, which for the life of me I can't remember which night it was now (tuesdays?). Kids meals were free meaning only the wife and I had to pay.
We had a large tasty meal and got out at under $40 for a family of 4 and a couple of beers.
The meats were tasty, and the sides were quite good also. Service was fast and friendly. Seating is a bit limited- wasn't a problem as we had gotten there early, but I noted as we were leaving that every table was full.
I'm not sure about the value if I had to pay for all of the meals- would definitely have made it more pricey, but still probably would have been worth it- I'm guessing $60+ for a family of 4.
Tasty BBQ for a good price (on family night). Not the best I've ever had, but overall a satisfying meal with the kids. -

The best pork ribs you will find in the greater Sacramento are. Fall off the bone good. The reason I don't give a 5 is I have never cared for the sides. My wife thinks the sides, especially the beans outstanding. Go and figure out for yourself

Best BBQ outside of Texas! Well in Northern California anyway. I haven't had better BBQ in Sacramento. But I've had better BBQ even in Syracuse. The Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse has the best ribs and pulled pork. Oh yeah, the Slathering and Wango Tango sauces are amazing, but I'll save that review for another day.
I thought the pork ribs were pretty good. Not that saucy but you can always get more sauce on the side. I'd recommend the spicy sauce... yummy! The ribs weren't the biggest but they were a high-quality meat (quite lean) and cooked just right (not dry and not greasy). I tried the juicy beef brisket too. It was a good cut and cooked just right.
With the meals and the lunch combos, you get two sides and your choice of bread. I got the BBQ beans, the potato salad, and cornbread. The BBQ beans were great... not too sweet from too much BBQ sauce and not too runny either. The potato salad was good, but not the shining star. What was delicious was the warm cornbread served with a side of homemade honey butter. I'd really recommend you try that.
The atmosphere of the place is really simple. But as Eden H. said: "it just works somehow". I cannot disagree with that. It also is clean and tidy inside. And it is family owned. I overheard the waitress talking to another customer in a wheel chair saying how her parents open this place. They definitely deserve bonus points for that in this awful chain-dominated city.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone. I'll be heading back. -

This place is supposed to have award-winning BBQ, but everything we got was pricely and mediocre. We went there on Father's Day and my husband said he had to "knaw" on the beef rib in order to eat it. Kids menu did not have a lot to choose from, so we got the sweet potato fries as an appetizer. They were limp and oily - probably because they are oven fried.
I got the BBQ Chicken salad which was not impressive at all. Cold BBQ sauce and chicken on top of iceberg lettuce. And I mean strikingly cold too - like recently defrosted cold.
Banana bread side was good though.
All in all, we probably won't be back even though we are locals since it was very pricey for food, as my husband put it, "that wasn't much better than Sizzler."
I will say though, the waitress was friendly, attentive, and helpful. -

We spent an afternoon in Coloma - seeing the sights where gold was first found in California, wandering into old buildings from the late 1800s and visiting a museum where teeny tiny dresses and shoes from the women of that time were displayed. After all that we wanted to get back to the present in a hurry.
What better way is there to forget about a time where people wore size 0 and rode in slow, horse drawn carriages than to head to a restaurant where SUVs line the parking lot and 5 servings of meat are eaten by one person.
The food here was awesome. We went at 5 PM and each ordered the early bird dinner plate [available before 6 pm], which includes, a huge portion of chicken, three pork ribs, and a mammoth sized beef rib. There's a choice of sides - the Texas style fixin's [potato salad, coleslaw, and beans] or California style fixin's [soup and salad]. Both meals came with a choice of three kinds of bread. I had the roll which was a bit stale but the Mr's banana nut bread was so good. If I went back I'd order a full order of the pork ribs. The menu says that they're award winning and I'd say that's no lie.
Service is quick and napkins are plentiful. The prices are significantly more than they were in the gold panning days. Our bill came to 25$ for two, not including tip. Burgers and salads are in the 8-10$ range and the bigger plates of meat start at 12$.
Gold boys, gold! -

I had dinner here the other night with my family. Yum! This is a good place to go if you are craving a hearty meal of BBQ meats with all the fixin's! I had a combo with sliced pork and beef brisket, with the Texas fixings. The meat was moist and tasty, and everything was very satisfying.
The restaurant is all about the food, not the atmosphere -- it's basic. But it sort of works somehow. It's a little on the expensive side, but considering the portions and the quality of the meats, it's worth it.
By the way, don't bother trying to take any vegetarians here; they will be miserable. It is NOT about the salads or veggies here. lol -

The pork ribs are ok. Not the best I have ever had or anything but totally edible.
I got the ribs with the texas fixings which is baked beans, cole slaw and potato salad... none of which were all that impressive. The other people I was with got the ribs with the CA fixings which is soup or salad and a choice of potato (baked, fries, or mashed). This option looked better I think but the salad was kind of wilted.
All in all it is an ok place. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back however. -

Another one of my favorite restaurants!! I think this is the best BBQ I have had in Northern California. I am a fan of Lucille's, but I like this place even better. It is reasonably priced. Lean meat, good sides. Clean, comfy location, and helpful staff. Love the BBQ sauce, too.

When travelling, its hard to know where to stop for e meal... I ususally end up at a framchise since the food will at least be familiar.
Last weekend I visited some friends in Placerville. They took me to a great barbeque! It is a classic Texas barbeque with the sauce on the side and real tender meat that was not greasy. I like Armadillo Willy's here in the bay area and this place reminded me of them. Service was good and the food was good. I would question the serving of refroed beans instead of Texas barbequed beans, but they are hard to come by-- especially if you are a small restaurant in the Sierra foothills. I will stop again on my way to Tahoe! -

I have had the pork ribs here a few times and they are always good. The beans are also good. The sweet potato chips were pretty good but different. Fast friendly service. Easy off and easy on Hwy 50; I will be back when in the area. A little pricey.

My mom had a recent event catered by Back Forty at a park. They came with their yummy brisket and short ribs. They also brought chicken but I am more partial to the beef and pork myself. I also enjoyed the corn on the cob but I could have done without the pasta salad and HUGE tub of red onions. I am not sure why there were red onions at all. There was a green salad but I didn't have any. The bread was pass-up-able too. The cookies were really yummy though. We had enough left over to feed a whole crew for dinner and my mom sent home leftovers with almost anyone who would take them. Overall a success!

I had the Back Forty cater my sons first birthday party this past weekend. I ordered the "Bosses Special" Three kinds of meat, BBQ Chicken, BBQ Pork Ribs, and Sliced Beef. Green Salad, Fruit Salad, BBQ Beans, roll, drinks and cookies. I wanted to like it. I really did. It was so easy to call them up and have them deliver the spread for 30 people. However, the salad was wilted, the fruit tasteless and the rolls Dry. My favorite and everyone Else's was the sliced beef. Tender, juicy and delectable. Needless to say the sliced beef was gone in no time. The price was right and the service was excellent. I just wanted the food to be a bit fresher and have more flavor. Next time I cater maybe I'll just get the sliced beef and make my own sides.

This has become one of my families favorite restaurants.
You have to start off with the amazing sweet potato chips or texas toothpicks.
Most folks wouldn't go to a BBQ joint for a salad but the Award winning BBQ Chicken salad is a must have (the 1/2 salad is enough to fill up the average person).
The fresh bread ithey serve with the meal is another piece of heaven that this wonderful place offers
The food is awsome, the prices are great and the people are wonderful.
It is easy to pass by but worth the stop. -

The chopped brisket reminds me of upscale dog food in appearance, but not in taste, fortunately. Hailing from Texas, this place is acceptable for a bbq fix...but I don't know it should be able to have "Texas" in it's name.

The pork ribs are bad. Not the best I have ever had or anything but barely edible. I got the ribs with the baked beans, cole slaw and potato salad... none of which were impressive. Save your money. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back however.

We have enjoyed many meals from the Back 40 - mostly take-out but a few dine in. The place is small, but clean and the servers are very friendly. We have found an inconsistency when ordering take-out with some of the ribs and chicken being over cooked. However, when dining in they seem to serve fresher, moister meats.

My wife and I stopped here on the way back from Lake Tahoe. I found the place on the internet and planned the stop ahead of time. When we arrived there the place was empty with 2 other tables occupied.
Its not overly fancy place but more down to earth what you would expect from a BBQ place.
Service was excellent and the waitress was very attentive. We ordered a plate of Pork Ribs with California fixin's and Beef Ribs with Texas Fixin's.
The soup of the day was Corn Chowder was very good and my wife loved it. The ribs were so tender falling off the bone and melting in your mouth
Beef Ribs were also very tender, Cole slaw was very good, Baked beans I found a little on the spicy side. Dinner rolls were fresh and good.
For desert we had the Banana Pudding and Bread Pudding, both were very good
I would highly recommend this place. I would actually give this place 4.5 stars. Close to 5 however not quite the best I have ever had. -

My husband and I had dinner at Back Forty Texas BBQ this week and it was very good. It's a bit pricey, but if you choose a meal in the Lone Ranger's section, you'll get a good deal. We'll go back.
