After craving some legit bbq for a few weeks, I searched some local places and had to make the choice between Back Forty and Lucille's, both of which we have never gone to. The deciding factor was simple. Price.

We went on a Wednesday around 5pm and were greeted immediately by a hostess who sat us quickly and was very kind. The place was practically empty at first and our waitress was super attentive, even as the tables around us filled up as it got later. We looked through the menu and made our choices. I ordered the Early Bird Special of three pork ribs, two sides and bread. I opted for mac&cheese and garlic mashed potatoes. The boyfriend ordered a Brisket sandwich and he was able to choose between lean or juicy (more fat on the meat) and he chose juicy. His also came with a side and he chose Tater Barrels (tater tots). We also had a little one with us so we ordered her the sliced bbq beef kids plate which came with a side (normal sized, not a smaller version), drink and choice of bread or cookie or brownie and also a toy craft thing to keep them busy which was awesome. We also ordered mozzarella sticks and a side salad (had to get my veggies in lol).

The mozzarella sticks had 10 in an order and were very yummy. The salad was standard with tomatoes, cucumber and cheese but that was fine by me. Our food came and at first I was slightly disappointed by the size of the ribs, but once I dug in I realized there was a ton of meat that was literally slipping off the bone. Im more of a beef rib person,  but these pork ribs were one of the best. The mac&cheese was good, but a little different. My boyfriend said it was bbq style mac&cheese but regardless, it was good. Noodles were a little too tender but I find that to be true with most restaurant mac&cheese. The garlic mashed potatoes. O.M.G. amazing. The were smooth, but still had a few lumps, some potato skin, but not too many and the most amazing garlic flavor. I would order them every time we come now. My meal also came with bread and I choose the wheat bread and honey butter. O.M.G. I wanted to order more but knew I had so much food already. Order the honey butter. Slather it on everything. It is so freaking good and the bread was that really good, dark, sweet wheat bread. So damn yummy. The boyfriends sandwich was also yummy. Crispy bread on the outside that was soft from the inside and perfect meat. The kids plate came with three sliced strips of brisket and was so good. She ate every last piece.

At the end of the meal, the bring warm wet naps which is awesome. We had great customer service too. The kid dropped her cookie on the floor and we asked for another one and got one right away, no extra charge. Our waitress also brought over a smaller fork for the kid, without asking, when she saw her struggle with the large one which was so sweet. I decided to also get dessert and couldn't decide between Bread Pudding (my favorite) and a Deep Fried Twinkie(omg). I ended up going with the bread pudding and it was huge (it filled a normal sized cereal type bowl) and was covered in caramel sauce. I've had better bread pudding, but also I've had worse. It was still very good though.

So we ended up with two drinks, appetizer, side salad, two adult entrees, kids entree, and an adult dessert, for $49. The amount of food was amazing for that price in both our opinions for great bbq. We will defiantly be returning when we need a bbq fix!

I think Back Forty is cool. I love theme restaurants. It's fun.

Service has been decent. I thought we had better service during lunch than we did when we came in for dinner..

Food's okay. I recommend the Armadillo Eggs and Lean Brisket. I've had the prime rib and although it was still good-- it was overcooked per the temp I asked for. So, maybe if you ask a temp below what you really want-- It'll work out. Au Jus and BBQ Sauce are good. So is the Mac 'n Cheese.

Some other points: the creamy coleslaw is not creamy. Pass on the Bread Puddin'. Texas Skins sounded like regular potato skin-type appetizers but if we had really read the menu without just chalking it up right away we would have known-- There's BEANS! They put beans in their Texas Skins. Interesting surprise. Although again-- it wouldn't have been if we actually read the description.

    Free wi-fi.
    Afternoon specials.

    3 stars. A-OK.
And you end with some warm wet naps..

The decor and the atmosphere are great. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. I really liked the ambiance and I really wanted to like this place.

Now for the food. I did thoroughly enjoy the cornbread, it was some of the best that I have had in a long time. I wold go back just to eat the crumbs of scrumptiousness (new word). I ordered a half rack of pork ribs with fried okra and onion rings. My girlfriend ordered pork ribs with hot links.

The ribs were OVER boiled, yes they fell off the bone, but there was absolutely no taste. I would be surprised if the ribs knew what a BBQ grill was (I think it didn't even get close to one). I had to dip the ribs in the BBQ sauce to make them edible. Oh, the BBQ sauce was pretty good. It had a nice little tang to it, but not enough to cover the dry meat like substance that was considered a rib.

The hot links had a funny taste like they too were boiled and had been in the freezer too long. You know that taste, yeah that one. Again had to use the BBQ sauce to overcome the taste, which in my opinion should not happen. I think the BBQ sauce should compliment the natural goodness of the meat.

I did enjoy the friend okra, that was darn good. I could eat a full plate.

To summarize, the main course sucked (big time), but the cornbread, fried okra and BBQ sauce were superb.

    Round up to 2.5.

Last Sunday, we drove up to the Sacramento area to have dinner with my in-laws who were on a stop over from SoCal on their way back to Oregon and my husband's Grandmother who lives in a nursing home in the area. Since I forgot to do my due diligence prior to leaving home, we had to rely on the GPS (both my car's and my FIL's) and the IPHONE to help us figure out a decent place to eat in the area. Sadly, this was the only recognizable with decent reviews type of place that popped up, plus the husband and I had a decent experience with Back Forty when there was a location in San Ramon.

We arrived around 6:30pm. Service was weird-young guy who had a hard time keeping up with drinks, etc. Some of the food was really good-the quarter chicken, the ribs, some was adequate( the beans, the corn chowder) and some was meh(the brisket and the fried shrimp). The most disappointing part of our meal was dessert (Grammy's favorite part) with the banana pudding (something she wouldn't eat anyway) being the worst and the best thing the husband remembered from San Ramon. It lacked flavor, had a broken texture instead of creamy and it was plain awful. The peach cobbler wasn't cooked enough and had more topping than innards and still had a raw flour taste to it and the brownie sundae was skimpy and the brownie was dry.

After our dinner and when the in-laws called the next day to let us know they got back to Oregon safely, they found out from an aunt that there are both a Cheesecake Factory and a Mimi's close by to the nursing home. Well, we'll know for next time and we definitely won't be back to Back Forty.

The place looked great from both the outside and inside; it just exudes BB-que.  So, I naturally indulged and though the list is long, it lasted a couple meals.  The corn bread and honey butter was a 5, the pork ribs 4, beef rib 4, the chicken 4, the hot link a 2, mac and cheese a 4, potato salad a 3, fried okra 3, onion rings 4.5 and of course Diet Coke.  The service was friendly and helpful.

Cool little place. Love the decor but the food isn't that great. The cornbread was dry, very small portions. There was no way that my rib eye was 24oz. Garlic Mash potatoes were bland and my wife's chicken was very cold. The on-line menu is outdated. The waitress was very friendly, that's a positive I guess. I won't be returning to this place.

My hubby and I went to Back Forty for the first time tonight. We love the atmosphere and staff. The decor is very Western/Country.

The restaurant is small but quaint, which is right up our alley. We were immediately seated, greated and given our drinks. Try the sweet tea! Very delicious and refreshing.

We ordered the Texas Beef Dip and the Spicy Pulled Pork Sandwich. On the side we had ceasar salad, tatertotts and banana bread. Odd combination but delicious nonetheless. The banana bread was hot and fresh- delicious! The ceasar was a small side ceasar with delicious house dressing.

The Dip was delicious! The bun was slightly toasted and the sandwich was the perfect portion. We really enjoyed the au jus, just right, not overly salty. Jim liked his Pulled Pork Sandwich as well... He ordered it with no coleslaw because he's not a big 'topping' kind of guy. He loved the pork as well as the spicy BBQ sauce. The tots were perfect little potato pillows, very delish!

All around the BBQ was excellent and the staff was great. We'd definitely come back again!

Ok I live in San Jose, CA and visit my parents often in Roseville. Now because of this place I will have to visit more often. OMG seriously people I really don't want to do this review because I don't want you to know about this gem but I just can't help but sing it's praises.

Ok first off, the decor is soooo awesome, the outside looks like an old west saloon and the inside has a Disneylandish Big Thunder Ranchish kinda down home feel. Real comfortable ambience. The staff is super nice and sweet.

The food by far is the BEST BBQ I HAVE EVER HAD in my 34 years of life. I have tried a few things on the menu and all were delicious but my fave is the skirt steak. Perfectly cooked, marinated, seasoned, and bursting with flavor. It is my fave by far and for sides I would recommend the garlic mashed potatoes, the home fries and/or the mac and cheese.

This place does BBQ right! 5 stars across the board, Back Forty  = BBQ Heaven.

Overall I was satisified with my most recent visit to Back Forty.  I haven't dined here for a few years now.  I have never really been disappointed.  Its a nice restaurant and its close to home.  I have used them for catering in the past years ago for a grad party and it worked out very well.

Paid a visit a few fridays ago at the dinner hour and was seated immediately.  Menu is nice, lots of choices, portion sizes and combos to get a taste of many of their items in one visit.  Server was very upbeat and made for an enjoyable meal.  I was in a brisket mood and my wife the same plus some pork ribs. Rub & seasoning, BBQ sauce are all on the mild side, no salt or sugar over powering the meat, it seems that they play it safe.

Soooo good. They only other BBQ in the area was Big Joe's but he only does catering now so I had to find somewhere new. We've been in Sac for about 5 yrs now and finding good BBQ has been VERY difficult! My Hubby wasn't feeling the BBQ mood last nite but that all changed once the food came!

First I have to say I was impressed with the bathroom, I didn't even bother sitting down before running in and I have to say I wish this was the bathroom I had to use at work. It was very clean and had a nice clean smell which I find less and less in public restrooms.

Now on to the important part. I ordered the Pork Ribs and Juicy Brisket combo w/ Corn on the Cob, Potato Salad and Cornbread. I also ordered a single Beef Rib (A little crazy but I hadn't had one since I was a kid and wanted to try it)! The brisket was soooooo tender, I cut it w/ a butter knife, but truly could've just used a fork. The pork ribs feel off the bones, I offered my hubby a taste and he took half the meat w/ him LOL. Potato Salad had a wonderful mustard taste, just enough to make you want more. Corn was fresh and tender and needed no salt or pepper. Cornbread was good but I enjoy Marie Calender's or Brookfields better. BBQ sauce was ok for a compliment to the meat, but if you're a sauce lover, you may be disappointed.

Hubby had the Prime Rib, Corn on the Cob, Green Salad, and Garlic Mashed potatoes. Prime Rib was good juicy and flavorful but I've had better (Jamies Broadway Grill). He was equally impressed w/ his meal!

We both had enough food for lunch today!

We saved room for dessert which was Berry Cobbler ala Mode. Danger Will Robinson, this is enough dessert for 4! It was good and HOT when it came to the table! It you prefer less doughy/crumbly top you may not enjoy it so much, but we were fans!!!!

Also, Sam, our waitress was so sweet. She was very attentive and helpful. When coming back to clear our table she asked if we had a dog. I answered yes (OH GREAT we now have a waitress for our stalker) and asked if I would like my Beef bone wrapped! Ok, not crazy stalker just extra thoughtful waitress!

PS: They have an earlybird special from 3-6p M-F (I think), that was like $8.49.

So easy! I had the food catered for my husbands 30th birthday. I made a quick phone call and had all the food ordered within minutes. The food was ready on time and so easy to pick up. They provided everything down to wet ones and a table cloth! Food was fresh, packed well and easy to serve. A really tasty meal!

This place was okay. We came on a Friday night and it wasn't crowded at all. We got the fried okra and cheese sticks for appetizers. They were only okay in my opinion. For dinner, I got the half pork ribs and half spicy pork. The spicy pork and ribs were good! The sides I got were mashed potatoes and fries. The mashed potatoes were okay.

I don't know if I would come back here but if I did I would definitely get the pork ribs again.

We were on our way home from a snow day trip and decided to be adventurous and drop by a random eatery. What caught our eye was the giant neon bright lights that hung above the restaurant.

We made the detour and thought the facade of the building look a bit touristy and hokey (not always a bad thing). The interior was all about the cowboys and western attitude.

I ordered the small plate of brisket, fried okra, and bbq beans while my gf ordered the 12 oz. prime rib, mashed taters and the mac n' cheese.

Hands down this was the best place that served prime rib and brisket. Both were moist, juicy, and flavorful. Seriously, it was on point. The fried okra was seasoned to give it a small kick.

The staff was very friendly as well. I definitely will be back again if I ever was in the mood for meat and in the area.

The pork ribs were 5 star, some of the best I've ever had.  The cornbread was likewise great.  Unfortunately, the other dishes were only meh; the beef ribs and brisket were okay, not great, as was the chicken.

I'd go back, but only for a plate of those pork ribs.

It's really easy to get to from Highway 80, if you're driving that way, and need a meal break.

    Service was good/friendly.

According to KCRA's A*list, THIS is number 1 over Big Joe's BBQ?  Chalk this one up to familiarity.  Back Forty has been around for 12 years.  And Big Joe's, only around for 2 years.  KCRA's A*list and cityvoter is obviously skewed.

    http://kcra.cityvoter....

I ordered the pork ribs and juicy sliced steak (brisket).  With the sauce on the side, Texas style, although pinkish, both meats were dryer than a bucket of sand.  They may as well been called corpse ribs and sliced leather.

I gave Back Forty an extra star for the sides though.  Their potato salad was a little more homemade tasting than Big Joe's and their corn bread was to my liking over Big Joe's too.  Crumbly with a fine grain texture, that corn bread was really good.  I was almost sorry that I accidentally dropped a morsel of cornbread into my barbecue sauce.  Awwww.

I also ordered their peach cobbler.  Here's the description according to their menu:  "We Fresh-Bake 'em every day in their own bowls, covered with a flaky, golden brown crust! Served ala mode."  My cobbler DID come with the ala mode, but a white cupcake topping instead of crust?  I was disappointed.

As Big Joe's only delivers to your table, Back Forty has full table service.  Cindy (my server) was super friendly and energetic.  She's been working for Back Forty since day 1.  If Big Joe's ever goes full service, I'd recommend trying to steal her away.  I would've given Back Forty another 2 stars for the service, but for now, this review is about Back Forty's disappointing main product.

Big Joe's is within a mile or 2 from Back Forty.  Head out there instead.

Let me start by saying I use to really like this restaurant.

Went to dinner there last night at back 40 took almost an hour to get our luke warm food. Husband had full rack of beef ribs- they were burned. son and me had the pork ribs they were OK, my daughter had the texas dip it was cold & dry.  When we asked to speak to a manager to come to the register to speak about the dinner and our disatisfaction we were asked "would you like to pay first" we said "no" we'd like to speak to the manager . We  never anticipated getting our meals for free, however I thought at the very least we would receive an apology but that didnt' happen. When I asked the sandwhich be removed from the $70 bill we were not treated very well. it's expensive to go out to dinner, and they are not  the only middle of the road restaurant around Citrus Heights. I would strongly recommend you choose someone other than Back 40 for a dinner for you or your family.

Ambiance is nice but started out disappointed. Slow to be served and the texas tumbleweed was blah and undercooked. Outback has the market on those for sure.  Prices don't look bas though so hopefully the food is good.  well...  the food was good and the service got much better...  never did our drinks run out and not once did a dirty plate sit on the table for long.  we all enjoyed out dinner and although i was timid after the first few minutes, it definitely got much better.  we will be back.

Ok, I'm going to compare Back Forty to my other favorite area BBQ place - Lucille's- in some ways, in order to give perspective, as well as my ultimate recommendation.

Let me get some generalities out of the way. Both are very good overall, and both get 4 stars. Both have average, yet solid service. Both are moderately priced, just above the popular chain prices. Both have fun, themed decor, just above the popular chains in terms of refinement.

Now, let's go dish by dish.

Sweet Starches: Back Forty serves cornbread with honey butter. Right up my sweet-toothed alley! Delicious. Lucille's answers with an equally delicious Biscuit with Apple Butter. Both are so good. I like the biscuit SLIGHTLY better, but the kicker here is that the biscuits are complimentary, and they keep them coming! Back Forty gives you one serving with a meal or charges you for extra. The big winner here is Lucille's!

Ribs: Simply put, BF does a better pork rib, Lucille's does a better beef rib. You want pork ribs, go to BF, you want Beef go to L's. I'm a beef guy, personally.

Sides: BF does a better mashed potato, L's does a better jalapeno popper. BF does a better onion ring, L's does a better mac&cheese. I don't like either's sweet potato side. DRAW.

Sandwiches: BF does a better pulled pork, L's does a tremendous Hot Link. DRAW.

    Didn't do dessert.

My Ultimate Recommendation: Refer to the dishes that I compared head to head and go to the one that serves those dishes better!

Hmmm.... cute, very cheesy restaurant.  Cute as in, the waitress who was 16 tried to act like a 40 yr old woman and called me "hun" every chance she could.  Cheesy, as in the restaurant looked like an old western bar from the outside with it's old tarnished wood and western like deck. On the inside they housed a plethora of cowboy paintings and bull horns.  It was very themed... very.

I decided that Brisket was the way to go today, but I really wasn't keen on inhaling just all beef into my tummy so I went with a "Smaller Portioned" meal.  The BF on the other hand was very hungry so he went with a "Pick 3 meats and 2 side" meal.  This was a good move on his part because when my meal came out, I thought someone was playing a huge joke on me, but ... no one was.  I literally got something that looked like the thinnest roast beef ever cut by a butcher.  4 thin pieces, 6 inches in length and 1 inch wide.  Really!?  This was it?  The sides were larger then the meat.  Man, I didn't want to over stuff myself with Brisket, but seriously... someone who didn't like to eat much would say that this wasn't enough food.

Now as for taste, the Pork Ribs were fall off the bone fantastic.  The BBQ sauces they provide are also very tasty.  They also had something called Sweet Potato chips, but ehh... they aren't as good as everyone claims they are.  They were soggy within 5 minute of receiving them.  I ordered a small order of MacNCheese, which BTW was JUST as much as my entire meal.  They were very cheesy and I like that.

The price on my Brisket meal was $5.60... so I guess I get what I pay for.  The BF's was $19.99.  Besides the meal the wanna be 40 yr old waitress was well attentive and very nice.  She made sure that we were taken care of even on a busy evening.  The Sweet Tea was also very good.  Not TOO sweet, just perfect.

I don't think I'll be going back to Back Forty anytime soon.  I'll stick with my Brisket from Memphis Minnies in the city, YUMZ in MY TUMZ!

I thought the food was not as good as the prices they charged. Very expensive. I had the prime rib sando, not too bad, NOT a lot of meat, $12. My husband had the smoke prime rib. Good size, thick, not too much fat. $25, too much. Our friend had the pork ribs. $15, for not a lot of ribs, that were dry as well. I can say the sweet potato "bull-eyes" were great, and if I were too order it as a side - by itself, worth the price. I will take my "steak" eating back to Cool Hand Luke's.

If they weren't overpriced, I would be back. For what they serve, and the portions, I feel they are way over the top in their pricing. The food quality just isn't there for SF food prices, in my opinion.

I can say the service was very good, I had no qualms about that.

    Frickin' finger-lickin fabulous!

It was my hubster's turn to call the shot for dinner last night and since we went over to Fireside for some cheap bowling, we decided to trek over and give Back Forty a try. I was super skeptical at first, but it turned out to be my favorite BBQ joint in the region!!!
We strolled in about 730ish on a Wednesday night, being watched from above by odd cowboy mannequins peering out of "jail" windows from the top of the restaurant. There seemed to be a lot of people inside, which was a classic signal that there was some good cookin inside. The aroma of smokey bbq'd meats hit the nostrils as we opened the door and a waitress was bidding farewell to some obvious regulars. I saw menu boards up front and feared it was a counter ordering joint, but luckily we were promptly seated in a cozy booth in a corner.
Texas rodeo threw up all over this place: metal studded leather chairs, tan pleather table cloths, welded horseshoe salt & pepper holders with bandannas,, country music bumpin and western pictures galore. Even the servers have gun holsters painted on their aprons! LOL! Giant plasma screens had the basketball game going throughout the dining room, so many wives were feeling neglected with the lack of dinner conversation no doubt. HAHA
As for the menu - good array of salads, sandwiches and bbq plates galore with an extensive side dish menu. Everything was reasonably priced and our server Zack was willing to offer his preferences for favorites. We ordered the buffalo wings from the appetizer menu to start with spicy sauce. They weren't spicy but they were by far the best wings I have ever eaten!! lightly crispy & fresh with flavorful sauce and plenty of meat on the bones. For dinner we both had the pork ribs and the brisket. I opted for lean while my husband went for the fattier chunk brisket. Both were moist and cooked to a perfect temp.
The ribs were to die for, very lean, juicy and just the right amount of sauce. I really enjoyed the bold & smokey bbq sauce he brought to us and ended up dumping it all over my ribs & brisket. For sides we had the tater tots, mac n cheese, "bullseyes" (sweet potato chips) and a Cesar salad. All were awesome but the mac n cheese was a little too nacho cheese style for my liking. The fried items all were fresh, crisp and you could tell they keep their deep fryers super clean which is refreshing to find these days.
Cannot wait to go back!!! GREAT value!I hope they are as consistent as they were delicious last night!!!!!  My only comment is that it would have been nice to see a manager during dinner time so we could compliment the food. A tiny bit more hospitality from management would boost this joint up over 5 stars in my book! :D

We LOVE Back 40 and have been going for 5 years!  I don't even know if I could narrow down my favorite entree... The ribs, chicken, sliced beef, cheeseburgers and sandwiches are all great!  Hands down my favorite side is the bullseyes (sweet potato chips).

I loved Louie's comparison between Back 40 and Lucilles.  Its a toss up for me (food only).  I do think the service is better at Back 40.  I think that's to be expeceted though from a local chain.

The decor is definitely better at Lucille's, however, they are different themes.  Back 40 is truly "western" and a bit corny.

Back 40 only serves wine and beer, so I appreciate the full bar at Lucille's.

I love this place.  The food is always excellent.  I go there every time I have that overwhelming need for "comfort food".  They keep it simple and are able to please even my picky granddaughter.  This is one place where I don't ever need a "to go" box.  Uh Oh......I'm drooling again....!!!!

    3 1/2 Stars...

Wanted to get out of town on the motorcycle today.  BBQ sounded good so did a bit of Yelping and found this place in Roseville.  There were a couple of others in the area that sounded good, but it seems like nobody eats BBQ on Mondays because they were all closed.  Well, thank goodness, this place was open.  It was a toss up between this place and Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que in Rocklin, which has 3 1/2 stars.  I opted for this place.

Pulled in the parking lot.  Lots of empty spaces.  They have plenty of parking and even an extra lot across the street so I presume that they get busy at some point in the week.  Today, being a holiday, people were probably headed home from the 3-day weekend.  I was seated in a booth for four.  I had plenty of room to spread out.  The booths have high backs which provides a bit of privacy.  They had all of the normal bbq'ed meats.  Ribs, both beef and pork, chicken, brisket, links, turkey, salmon and catfish.  I ordered the Rio Grande Combo for $29.   I was hungry.  But I guess, not THAT hungry, since I brought enough home for a midnight snack.  My meal came with two sides.. I chose a green salad and mac and cheese..both were
average.  For my three meats, I picked chicken (1/2), brisket (about 10 good slices) and pork ribs (6 medium size ribs with quite a bit meat on them).
Yes, it was quite 'pricey'.  But I was hungry.  Actually it would have been close to enough for two people.  I enjoyed all of the meats which were very tender and had a great smokey taste.  They were all smoked with a dry rub.
I personally prefer BBQ when they slop some sauce on towards the end of the cooking process.   It seems to permeate into the meat  and adds to the moisture and flavor.  The meat is served  with a mild BBQ sauce which was quite tasty.  A spicier version is available which I tried and it added a little 'bite' to the flavor.  I would probably prefer a mixture of the two which is what I will do next time.

The service was superb.  I had one main server but other servers pitched in and checked on me to see if I needed anything and even refilled my iced tea SEVERAL times!  Nothing lacking in the service department.

Since I couldn't quite finish that Grande meal I asked for a to-go container.
They brought the container and a couple of small containers of the bbq sauce to go.

Next time I will probably try Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que in Rocklin just to be able to compare the two.

I would return to Back Forty Texas Bbq at a future date....

I used to like this restaurant, but I went here recently and it was TERRIBLE. They are supposedly known for their ribs, but I couldn't even finish mine cause they were just not good. The mac and cheese is not freshly made, it is frozen, I know that flavor. I ordered their peach cobbler because I figure you can't mess that up, but they did! It had about 4 slices of peaches in the entire thing, and was just plain mush. Overpriced for food that is obviously microwaved. Will not go back anymore.

They have the best smoked pork ribs.  I also love the sweet potatoe chips.  I have never gotten a bad meal here.  The place is clean, great atmosphere and good service.

I live 2 hours away and whenever I travel thru I always make a point to eat there.  That's how much I love this place.

I like their bbq pulled pork, their texas toast, and fries are yummy. I wasn't impressed with their ribs or the brisket.

A little overpriced for what you get, but their bbq sauce is to die for!! Worth it to just go for that alone.

Really only had the pork ribs here a few times over the years and they are consistently fairly dry.   I do like dry rubs and have had "fall off the bone" ribs at BBQ restaurants in other cities and these just don't stand up.   Flavor is fine and did like the sauces, but a restaurant should really be able to cook them long enough so they are very tender.   Ribs I cook at home on a gas barbeque are at least as tender.

Last visit also had overcooked cornbread that had to be returned to the kitchen.

Prices are quite high, but commensurate with other BBQ places like Lucille's.   Service is very good.

Sacramento definitely needs a place that really knows how to BBQ.  Haven't found one yet.

Consistently good ribs, potato salad, and awesome sausages keep us coming back to Back Forty! The homemade Hot-Link Sausages are actually quite mild. They are unlike any other I've ever come across.  Grab a sausage sandwich to go for lunch sometime! ...Wifey loves their cole slaw. Mom loves these sweet potato things called "bullseyes". ...But make no mistake - it is the smokey meat that is the star here. ...Their staff is always friendly and fast!
