http://Backcountry.com is my favorite retailer of outdoor gear. I've bought things from them in all different categories: skis, camping, hiking, and biking stuff (through http://hucknroll.com). My order always ship from their warehouse in 24 hours. Their return policy is amazing too - unlimited returns with no questions asked.
If you live in Salt Lake I recommend that you stop by the retail store that they have set up in the warehouse. There's a small selection of gear to browse but you can have them get any product out of the warehouse and try it on before you buy it. It just takes a few minutes for them to retrieve it for you. You can also drop off returns here if you don't want to pay for the $6.99 shipping label that they offer.
Backcountry is great to have in the Salt Lake valley. I'm a customer for life! -
Review from Kate G.
Backcountry is one of the top online retailers I check before making any outdoor clothing or gear-related purchases. More than half the time, I end up buying from this site. Main reasons include: 1) Some of the highest % off you can find on the internet. 2) Incredibly helpful gear experts who you can chat with immediately. I have been given specific measurements on things like sleeve length as well as recommendations on outerwear, boots, helmets, goggles and gloves. I don't feel they are partial to certain brands and I have been undersold on items before, where they recommended something even cheaper than what I was originally considering. 3) Their inventory is massive and you can find not only a huge variety of sizes and hard-to-find colors in stock here, but often even discontinued stuff from years past and that can net some crazy savings. A lot of great/unique/"small-batch" gear goes here to die. 4) Free shipping over $50. Often this is expedited to two days (though it usually takes two days, expedited or not - they are fast!), or sometimes the minimum amount is waived depending on the season. 5) Super easy returns. You can also often get your return shipping fee waived if you get a suggestion from a gear expert and are unhappy with it after arrival.
My favorite ski jacket is from here, purchased a couple years ago. It was a sold out size and color and only Backcountry had it, plus it was a steal. I took off a star because I recently purchased a jacket from a different retailer because I found a lower price - this is pretty rare though. Another caveat is that if you find something you like and is available in your size, buy it right away because stock changes from day to day as do the discounts. I've been disappointed when an item in my cart increases in price over a 24-hour period. This is common when online shopping on deep discount sites but still painful when you think you've found the absolute best deal on something. -

Their product availability and return service is 2nd to none. EVO is also really good, but http://backcountry.com has consistently maintained the highest level of customer service and I've always been satisfied.

Another new addict to http://Backcountry.com!
Backcountry is a comprehensive provider of outdoor activities apparel and gear (skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, hiking, camping, paddle sports, travel) and aggregator of quality brands.
Their retail prices are reasonable, and the sales are super sweet. Scored skiing, running, and general crew socks at an average discount of 33% ! I took advantage of the free shipping for a purchase of $50 and up, and my socks came less than a week later. -

The gear is good. The customer service when you call in is horrible. Rude, rude, rude!!!
There are places with similar prices, and the customer service is better. -
Review from Gary E.
I love buying local. I love going to Any Mountain, and REI. And I don't mind paying a couple of dollars more to do so - helping the local spots, and getting the instant gratification (and ability to try stuff on) is well worth it.
But then there's these guys. Their sales are legend. Their stuff on hand is mindblowing. Their customer service is OUTSTANDING. And their prices are terrifyingly good.
Case in point. Arc'teryx hoody. $199 at REI. $199 at Any Mountain. $129 at Backcountry - with free shipping and no tax. Full Yakima rack setup for my new Forester. $280 at REI. $252 at Rack & Road. $224 at Backcountry - with free shipping and no tax.
Returns are a snap. Wife bought me the afforementioned hoody for Christmas, it was too big (hooray!) and I sent it back. Had a replacement within a week of mailing it out.
Customer service? The rack I ordered (which was sent out the same day) got delayed in transit. But even though it had nothing to do with Backcountry (was delayed by UPS), they still sent me an email letting me know there was a delay, and apologized profusely for it. Anytime I'm on their site, I have the option of chatting live with one of their sales reps - who know their stuff, and are able to help with price matching.
And as if all THAT'S not enough, they introduced Steep and Cheap (And now they've got a bunch more like Chainlove, Tramdock, and more!) which follows a Woot-style single item, until it's sold out. I've scored backpacks, clothing, sleeping bags, tents, and all sorts of gear on SAC for ludicrously low prices.
All in all, the gang of miscreants in Utah have ruined my life, and my bank account, as well as crammed my garage with awesome gear - and I find it hard to shop anywhere else. -
Review from Akshay M.
I am not sure if there is a physical store, but if there is I would take a flight there someday and hug each of their personnel for the excellent service.
After a lot of trolling on a bunch of sites for my snowboarding gear, i came to realize that backcountry had the best deals of the lot. They always have the Gear Expert, an online chat person who in addtion to helping u pick the right gear for you can help u with returns and other questions.
Their returns program is impeccable, and i always shop without the fear of ending up with a crappy or defective gear. Other than the return shipping they take care of everything like printing out the waybill etc.
I never had a complaint for them and they have always made sure to keep in touch even after the sale to gauge my satisfaction. The have off season sales so keep an eye open for hot deals now and then.
Backcountry ensures that u get to access all of nature's worth without the hassle that comes with online shopping, so what are you waiting for get out and play. -

Buying something for Mr. E is hard... really hard. Find something at http://Backcountry.com is really easy and you'd be hard pressed to beat the prices. The website is user friendly and quick to process orders.
Unfortunately, we've also had to test the return process with Backcountry (wifey ordered the damn wrong zip sweatshirt!) and it was a little time intensive- had to get a code, fill out the paperwork and then take it to the post office for postage since they don't include a postage-paid label.
Once it was returned, they credited my card immediately- even though we wanted a replacement- and then the replacement went way up in cost. However we were able to chat with nice employee who was able to correct the whole deal by sending us the correct item for the original price plus a "sorry for your troubles" discount. Long- wait, but the end result was the same. My husband got what he wanted for a great price and we discovered that backcountry stands by their customers! -

I purchased from them and they went back on their Unlimited Returns because they failed to mention that if you use your products warranty you lose your Unlimited Returns. I've have spent over 2 months on this for them to do an unauthorized charge to my credit card.

This review is for online. Warning...don't sign up for RSS feeds that change every 20 minutes with different products to Steepandcheap, Chainlove or Bonktown...you'll end up like me broke with lots of great stuff.
I've purchased products ranging from K2 Apache Recon skis, to Oakley Radar sunglasses, to Accelarade performance drink mix, to Pearl Izumi wear...all great stuff. I am always amazed how quickly the products arrive at my front door step. I have yet to test the return policy, but with unlimited time frame, and for whatever reason...how do you beat that? -

Billowing backpacks, Radioactive Man!
Holy shizzle. Can I just begin by saying customer service is rare these days, unless you're paying through the nose for ass-kissing like a country club, Equinox gym, or dinner at Gary Danko (for you non-SF residents, Gary Danko has the best service I have EVER had at a restaurant, hands down).
Backcountry and its sister site http://SteepandCheap.com are amazing deals for any kind of outdoor gear. I'm not a huge outdoors person but it's been a fantastic deal for nice clothes like North Face fleeces, designer board shorts, Klean Kantee water bottles, and a whole assortment of other gear.
I needed to return items from two different orders recently so I went onto their site to chat with a customer service rep (they are available 24 HOURS! sweet for late night shopping binges). Not only were the reps helpful on both occasions I went online (the first one helped me place the second order AND recommend some clothes based on what he'd worn), but they sent me a prepaid return label so I could return my gear!
And they have a lifetime return policy - which I've never had to use, but damn that's a reassuring feeling. I plan on using these folks for many years to come! -

I LOVE this website!! Great sale and great selection. CS is great. If I don't see something they will get it for me and put them up on line in no time.
Gear expert is really an expert, they know *hit!
They also have great sale once in a while.
I'd recommend this place. -

This is one of the greatest online retailers of outdoor gear. They've got great customer service, great selection and awesome prices. I've never had to test it, but supposedly, they offer a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee similar to REI's.
But, hands down, the greatest thing about it is the on-site reviews that users post on the site. I hate having to see what's available and then having to go another site to look for reviews. With http://backcountry.com, BAM, no more. Listen up REI, put in on-site reviews. It's not that hard. -

Best Website Ever!
I love this website for winter gear, watches, backpacks, outdoorsy stuff and pretty much anything. This place is the best! I've ordered stuff from here and have always been happy. Since they are located in Utah, there's no sales tax and if you order anything over $50 shipping is free! Twice yearly they have a major sale, so you can save some big bucks on expensive things like riding jackets, skis, snowboards etc.
I love the live help on the website. During certain hours you can chat online with a "gear expert" and you can get help on anything. I was looking for a specific jacket that was discontinued, and they helped me find something very similar. Yes! The onsite reviews written by customers is also great. Suck on that Outdoor World! -

This review is for http://backcountry.com (Is there a real physical retail store? I don't know). I haven't actually received my gear yet..but I'm amazed at their customer service. I ordered snowboard pants through Amazon on Monday and I chose the slowest, free shipping option. I checked the UPS tracking and it says it's going to be delivered tomorrow! How awesome is that?! AND...I ordered a 2 jackets today from the actually website and again chose the slowest, free shipping option. I receive an e-mail saying they have moved my order to the front of the line (don't know if they did, but it feels nice :P) and just now I received an e-mail confirming my order has shipped and will arrive on Friday.
That is amazing. We will see when I actually receive my purchases. So excited! They have a much better selection of gear than from the major sports stores out here in California.
Free, super fast (supposedly) shipping! No tax!! *hearts hearts hearts* -

Love http://backcountry.com. I have bought a lot of gear on this site, as well as tramdock and SAC, and am consistently pleased with the prices, selection and customer service - I love that my gear arrives within 24 hours of ordering!! The physical store in WVC is just as great - the people working at the store are friendly and funny - always a good experience. The bonus discount codes via email and Facebook are a great perk.

I have never been to any of their bricks and mortar locations, but their .com, products and customer service leave nothing to be desired. Their stuff has always been on point as far as price goes, but my recent experience with a return was a stand-out: I had gotten new shoes and a climbin harness as a gift, but both were too small and so I needed to exchange them. I called somewhat hopelessly at 11:30pm on a Saturday (some social life, right?) and not only was someone there to answer the phone, but he made the process incredibly easy and simple. I will continue to patronize BackCountry and you should, too!

I didn't realize that the company was based right here in SLC. My package that came with the free standard shipping (that would have taken 7-14 days) arrived less than 24 hrs of ordering - which was incredible. Unfortunately, their sizing chart wasn't too helpful and I ended up having to return everything. The only grip here is that I had to pay out of pocket for shipping return. I'd definitely shop here again though.
