During our visit to Nags Head, NC, we took a day trip up to Corolla to see the wild mustangs. We chose Back County Outfitters because their guides are naturalists and because we read some good reviews about them online. I have to say that their service and tour were outstanding. Our guide, Schwinn," was beyond pleasant, beyond accomodating, and beyond knowledgable. We saw at least 25 horses, tons of birds, and learned a great deal about the dune communities of North Carolina. A great experience and well worth the time and investement!

For me, no vacation is complete without communing with nature. Whether its a kayak trip, 4x4 tour to see the wild horses, or on an off-road Segway, Back Country Outfitters should have something for your tastes.

Perry L. and I chose Back Country because it was the only tour company that offered intermediate/advanced kayaking. In addition to the kayaking trip, the wild horse tour comes standard. For our trip, there were no other advanced kayakers, so it was just the two of us and the guide, Matt. We saw a few harems of wild horses, complete with a few baby foals. We also had a great drive along the Currituck beaches, which are accessible mainly by 4x4. After the drive, we set off in kayaks. Perry and I shared a tandem, basic kayak. We took off across the sound and literally got lost in the mazes of fantastic marshes. From great blue heron, red winged blackbirds, nutria dens, ducks, fish, and even a small water moccasin, the wildlife was abundant. Because were were such a small group, the tour was tailored to our ability, which really made a difference in terms of speed, length, and how much talk you cared for. Overall, we kayaked for about 2.5 hours and covered probably a couple of miles.

My one concern about BCO was the reservation process. It took me four tries to get into contact with someone and actually book the trip. Their website isn't designed to help you book a trip or quote prices and when you call, they only schedule up to one week in advance. Lucky for me, I got a discounted pre-peak season rate for my diligence, but do be patient with them! Also, their location is a bit hard to find, but the office is quite nice once you're there.
