And if I could give more stars I would! I came to Back Bay after a very negative and traumatic experience from my last Vet (in fact, the last three were basically sub-par), so I was resigned to having another less than stellar vet experience. Because of the last vet, my 17 year old cat Jeff fought getting in the carrier and cried the entire way to BBV. Truthfully he probably picked up on my stress as well.
Enter BBV, I was cheerfully greeted by the receptionist who knew my name and Jeff's, it just went up from there and my stress went down exponentially. She let me know she had my insurance papers ready and that Kali would be out in a moment to take us in. Kali came out in a few moments, she patiently listened to my concerns and addressed each one before she took me back to an immaculate examination room. Because Jeff was still a bit keyed up, she left him in his carrier while we sat on the floor and chatted until he came out on his own. He was clearly comfortable so she began his exam, Dr Torres joined a bit later and she was equally knowledgeable and kind.
It turned out Jeff needed dental surgery to clean and remove diseased teeth and because of his age I was concerned about the anesthesia. After meeting the staff, I felt certain he was in the best place possible. And I was right, the surgery went smoothly, Dr. Torres kept me informed of what was going on and as a result, Jeff was back to himself within a day. They even called the next day to check in on him.
What stands out in this practice, while it is a professional business they go above and beyond to recognize the human side, for me and for Jeff. From the receptionist who came out from behind the counter to hug a girl who just lost her pet to Kali making sure my cat had his familiar blanket next to him while he had surgery, you know that they truly love animals. While I agree with the other reviews that they are a bit pricey, I can only say you get what you pay for and they are worth every penny. -

I love BBVC. I brought my first kitty, Gretchen, here after having a check up at a different clinic. Gretchen is missing a bone in her foot so she looks like she has a perma gimp, after an incredibly traumatic interaction with our initial vet (called her a genetic mutant and then tried to unbend her foot!!!!!) I brought her to BBVC and have not looked back. Dr. Torres reassured me that there was nothing wrong with her foot, that she was not a genetic mutant, and has taken such great care of my little girl. She was super helpful when I decided to adopt another kitten, what to get, how to introduce him to Gretchen, etc. Dr Torres was also wonderful when my new fur ball developed kitty acne and a URI. We've seen a few other doctors in the office who are pretty great, but Dr. Torres is our fav and we recommend her to everyone!
The new digs are fantastic and super clean. The staff are all wonderful, compassionate and knowledgable...I never feel stupid asking questions, the techs and doctors know the answers to everything. I also had to board my kitties last minute last summer and they helped me squeeze one of mine in for a last minute physical so he could go to "camp." You can tell that they love what they do and geniunely care about you and your animals.
Of all the things I'll miss about Boston when I move, BBVC will be in my top 10. -

I've been to vets all up and down the east coast and this is hands down the most sincere, caring and competent care my pets and I have been given. The vets and techs are knowledgeable, articulate and compassionate- I have found that great animal doctors often lack great people skills- this is not the case at Back Bay Veterinary Clinic.
My two year old cat went in for the first time for what ended up being a blockage due to something he ate; they performed immediate (successful) surgery. The only time I got nervous was when I had to take him home and realized he wasn't in their care any longer. The office is clean and beautiful and the woman at the receiving desk (Kiki and Anne Marie) were so nice (one of them even made me coffee).
The morning after the surgery Doctor Leveine called me to check on us, and later that day when I called with some concerns the tech (Kaylee?) asked me to call her back after observing my cat for a while longer so she had "peace of mind".
The patience and genuine concern these people have for animals and their owners is remarkable. It's frustrating to see this place given low stars because of their prices. Sure, it's got a bit of a boutique feel to it with the exposed brick and lovely prints on the walls- it's on Newbury St. - what would you expect?
Pets are incredibly expensive to own- as in the human medical field tests need to be given before medicine is administered- xrays need to be taken to see if there is a problem or not - and yes, some doctors cost more. If you don't want to pay their prices, then go somewhere else. I've had so many unfortunate and traumatizing interactions with vets and their techs that have negatively affected my pets health, left me feeling like my concerns were irrelevant and that I was taking up their time that I am happy to pay a little bit more. Excellent doctors and staff plus great facilities = happy pets and owners. Thanks BBVC! -

This is the place to take your pet!
Everyone here is so nice and helpful. The vets and vet techs really take the time to explain what they are doing, looking for and have found. In addition to being a great and knowledgeable group of people they are also extremely thorough. The exams at Back Bay are comprehensive and their follow up is fantastic. Something else I really love about this practice is that they go the extra mile in trying to accommodate you even if its for a last minute appointment.
I have been a client here for almost five years and I will continue to be for as long as I live in Boston. -

The staff at this place is great and seem to genuinely care for the pets. The facility is clean and the equipment seems to be up to date. However, the cost of the service is exorbitantly overpriced.
I am fine for paying a little more for high quality service. However, Back Bay Vet overcharges for such things as meds, vaccines, or flea prevention. When you compare their prices to other vets in the area and online you feel taken advantage of.
I talk with some people in the dog park at the Common about how they will not bring their dog to this vet unless it is really sick or needs to get vaccine booster. The end result is that the high prices at Back Bay Vet negatively impact pets' health. For a vet so concerned about the well being of animals it is sad to see their prices act as a deterrent for treatment
Finally Back Bay Vet pushes Science Diet pretty hard which is a major red flag. As anyone can tell you that reads Dog Food Analysis this food is terrible for dogs and has little nutrition. The food also uses ethoxyquin as a preservative. This chemical is banned from use in human food due to being carcinogenic. -

Back Bay vet will do a fine job of caring for you pet, but they'll do an even better job of emptying your pocket book. If you're okay with spending over $900 to get your pet neutered, then by all means - check them out!
I brought my Chihuahua in for a full exam. He was new to our family so I wanted all the tests run. Back Bay has no qualms about giving you all the bells and whistles - you're just going to pay out the nose for it. $140 bill later he was given a clean bill of health. A little while later when I went to order his heartworm medications from http://1800petmed.com I was told that Back Bay refused to allow the meds to be given, saying that a heartworm test had never been performed.
A lie.
Of course, they wanted us to come back in for another exam. We were hounded by them through the phone and by email.
Luckily by this point we had the sense to take our little guy elsewhere and had another vet redo all the tests.
This place will try to swindle you out of every dollar. I wouldn't trust them. -

When helping to care for a senior dog, senior dog issues come up. Dr Torres and the rest of the team at Back Bay were fantastic every step of the way.
They knew Bailey and her whole sordid, sock eating past. You could tell they really cared about her. They offered good, solid advice and different treatment options. Dr. Torres was always honest about what the treatment would entail, the likely success rate and cost. When it was difficult to walk, some technicians came down to help carry her the rest of the way.
When it came time to put Bailey down, they were understanding and made the process as comfortable for everyone as possible. They were very clear about what the process would be, what to expect and what we could do to make both people and dog as comfortable as possible during every step of the way.
As terrible a day as it was, I was happy that Dr. Torres was Bailey's vet and there with her in the end. Afterwards, as we were leaving, she offered some very kind words of encouragement and a teary hug.
I'm not ready to adopt just yet. But when I do, I definitely want the Back Bay and Dr. Torres to be my vet. -

I consider this my "emergency" vet for when something goes very awry (acute onset) and I don't have time to wait for an take my cats to an appointment in the suburbs. I find that the vets and staff here are very accommodating and unlike at Angell Memorial where there is a major attempt to "sell" more expensive services, Back Bay will tell you all your options for your pet and work very hard to start with minimal costs, and minimally invasive treatments.
As others said they aren't cheap but compared to Angell they are! Also they have Saturday hours, so they can handle all but Sunday emergencies. -

I would give them 10 stars if it were possible. I have been a loyal customer for 3 years, but they won me over for life with our most recent interaction.
There was a fire in my condo building around the corner. The Back Bay vet went above and beyond and sent out personnel to check on not only their patients, but all dogs in the building. Needless to say, they are a neighborhood staple who goes above and beyond for their neighbors. -

My cat Bella and I miss Back Bay Vet so much! They were her very first vet and she loved going there!
Back Bay Vet is super clean, always running on time, and the people there are so wonderful. Dr. Torres and Dr. Bendock took such great care of Bella. They did thorough exams and we never felt rushed. Bella had a nasty cold and stomach issue when I first adopted her and they nursed her through both without emptying my wallet.
By far the nicest and cleanest Vet in the Back Bay! -

I'm probably not going to write anything brand-spanking new in my review, but I did want to compliment one of the vets at Back Bay Vet Clinic.
First off, the reason I gave this 4 out of 5 stars is because the prices really are very expensive. I just had my 7-month old Beagle/Min-Pin mix neutered, and had to take him to another clinic -- the price Back Bay Vet had quoted me was almost 3 times the price I ended up paying.
That said, the service here is excellent, and worth the charge for routine checkups. Dr. Torres is extremely friendly and knowledgeable -- my pup just loves her. The vet techs are warm and loving, and take such good care of all of their patients. You can always tell how much the whole staff is truly passionate about animals.
As another person said, just shop around for the more expensive procedures, like neuter/spays. -

I have taken my dog Nikki to Back Bay Veterinary Clinic for 8 years and I have never been disappointed. The Doctors and staff are universally caring, considerate and professional. Today they completed Nikki's first teeth cleaning ever and I was a nervous wreck about her going under anesthesia as she has a heart condition. They took the time to explain the procedure and administered a series of tests to ensure she would tolerate the surgery well. They were communicative and reassuring before, during and after the procedure. They even took the time to write a note to me about how brave she was during the whole thing and what a pleasure it was to treat her. Yes, they charge a premium for their service. But given the location, the quality of the doctors, the state-of-the-art facility and the above and beyond bedside manner - they earn every penny of it as far as I am concerned.

When I first adopted my dog, Rufio, I brought him here because I'd always passed it while attending Simmons and shopping on Newbury, and had heard good things through word of mouth. Knowing it'd be expensive, I also knew that they'd probably do the best job. Since then, Rufio's had two annual checkups, where I had two different vets, but both were amazing. They were so calm and gentle with him, with realistic and real-life terminology that I could understand. I think I had Dr. Torres and Dr. Starr. The front desk staff is always helpful both in person and on the phone; the offices are very clean. It's VERY expensive, Rufio's having surgery tomorrow and it's over a grand... but I don't want to shop around for better prices when I know the quality here is so good.
EDIT: Just picked up Rufio from surgery, and Dr. Torres was super nice and took her time answering all of my questions. So far, so good :) -

This is the best vet i have ever been to, and i have been to quite a few in my life.
I took my dog there for a dental check and it was her first visit. The Dr. sat on the floor with my little dog for 10 minutes, making her comfortable and calm. She was so nice and easy to talk to. She asked me all kinds of questions about my dogs history, lifestyle, habits, behaviors and personality, way beyond just the medical stuff. Never once did anyone there make me feel like i didn't know what i was talking about, which is something i feel like other places do. for example, they completely understood my desire to not over-vaccinate my animals, where other vets have really pushed the issue.
I would highly recommend this Dr. to anyone. Yes i agree that it was expensive, but it was well worth it. -

The women in here are always REALLY NICE and as someone who lives in the area and likes walking vs driving to places its in a great location.
The prices you would expect would be more for the location. Sorry, I can't honestly tell you if they are that much more than other places cuz the random shots etc. I have had done there I never had done anywhere else to know.
They do grooming too, which is nice, but the wait is usually like at least a month ahead, so either make an apointment WAY in advance, or go someplace else! BUT they do a great job of cutting toe nails, esp on little dogs, so it might be worth the wait!
My little Josie screams bloody murder when anyone tires to go near her nails! I could hear her yelling for every clip -- but everyone in there was so nice and held her so sweetly. I know it must have hurt their ears to hear her, but they were oh so kind about it!
They honestly CARE about the animals, when I called they remembered my dogs name from mine! Its always nice to know your pet is in good hands! -

I found this place because Pawsh Dog Boutique (in the Back Bay) was doing an event about Animal Emergency. I was walking by the other day and popped in to check it out.
The people there were so very friendly and actually helped me book an appointment right away. I got an appointment very quickly even though it wasn't an emergency. When I got there they were pleased to see me and quickly copied all my records and had me in a room within 5 min.
The nurse was very good with my dog even though she is very shy. The nurse and doctor came in quickly and were very helpful. They gave me the information and medication I needed no problem and I was in and out so quickly.
I would recommend this place to any pet owner. The people were so nice and clearly love what they do. -

I started bringing my cat Oslo here after he started losing weight at an alarming rate. The very friendly staff took us right away. My Dr. was extremely compassionate and patient with me explaining everything in detail since I was so upset. She explained what she thought could be wrong with Oslo. She gave me an estimate and told me if I felt more comfortable we could do some of the testing in case we found the cause in the first round it wouldn't cost as much. I never felt pressured to spend and love when I call back the staff remembers Oslo by name :)

We have had a few wonderful experiences with this clinic over the past few weeks. First, they made a home visit for our cats' annual checkup and were able to get through the whole thing with cats that usually don't like vets.
Then we took our cat McFly in for an emergency and the service was PHENOMENAL. Time and time again Dr. Beth Waisburd clearly outlined her assessment of the situation and our options with total sensitivity to the tough decisions we had to make and the factors entering into them. When we had to transfer our cat to Angell after the initial emergency surgery, she had called ahead and fully informed Angell of the situation to the degree that the doctors there even commented on how unusually great it was. This, and the fairly significant cost savings, caused us to transfer McFly back to Back Bay for the final surgery and we couldn't be happier with the results. Beth was in constant communication and totally up front with us throughout . Kali was awesome too! We would never take our cats anywhere else now and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. -

I got my yorkie puppy Lola for Christmas, and I brought her for her initial vet visit in Maine (where my family lives), but I knew I'd need to find a vet in Boston for her shots and normal check-ups, etc. Never having a dog in the city before, I had no idea where to go. I put off making an appointment for the first couple days, but lo and behold, Lola forced me into it - the person who was watching her during the day called me frantically, saying that he thought she "might have swallowed a shard of ceramic". Of course, I freak out and immediately turn to yelp for inspiration on where I should call. :)
When I called Back Bay Vet, I told the receptionist about the situation and she immediately put me through to Dr. Waisburd, who was extremely helpful and answered all of my questions on the phone. I didn't end up bringing her in that day, but did make an appointment for Lola to get her shots a few days later. Dr. Waisburd again was amazing - I had a million questions and I didn't feel at all rushed by her. I just felt extremely comfortable with her and with the place as a whole.
I ended up having to bring Lola back shortly after for an emergency, and they fit her in within an hour and then called twice to check in with me in the week following the appointment to make sure she was doing ok.
I love the easily accessible location, and the late hours they have make scheduling a breeze. I also love that they're able to get you in quickly if necessary. It was pretty expensive to me, but this is also coming from someone who doesn't have anything to compare it to in the city; this is the only vet I've ever been to in Boston. Either way, it was worth every penny. All of the staff were welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, and were great with Lola. I'd definitely recommend this place, especially Dr. Waisburd!
I really couldn't be more happy with the service I received here. -

i found this place because my cat had a health emergency and they could see him right away.
Since it was an emergency I had to transport my cat in a cardboard carrier. For a cat, he is particularly stubborn and particularly determined. While driving, he managed to squeeze out of the handle hole (about 4 inches wide and two inches tall) and had escaped into my car. When I arrived I tried to coax him back into the carrier but he would not go. I had to call the office and ask for help. Two cardboard carriers and one METAL CRATE later, my cat was contained.
The vet told me that he had a urinary blockage and explained my (very expensive) options to me. They gave me time when I needed to call my parents for advice and didn't judge me when I burst into tears fearing that I could not afford to save him.
Instead they developed a custom, more affordable treatment option for me and were diligent in following up to insure my cat was ok. -

My wife and I take our cats here and are extremely satisfied with their service. Both the medical staff and the office staff spend plenty of time talking with you to answer your questions in a helpful way.
After moving out of Boston, we tried out a new vet near our place in the suburbs. We compared the two, and it was an easy decision to remain with Back Bay. -
Review from J K.

I'm giving BBV one star because I don't have the option of giving zero. Their vets care about one thing only: making as much money as possible. Their prices are RIDICULOUSLY expensive, even by Newbury street standards. I might be OK with that if they provided the best possible care, but they don't--they're incompetent. Let me give you some examples:
1.) I took my dog in because he had broken a nail on a walk and I wanted to make sure it wasn't more serious than that. The vet's first reaction: take an x-ray! And not just one x-ray of the injured paw, but also one of a normal paw as well so that she could compare them. She explained how vital the x-ray was and scared me a little, so I went along with it. However, the x-ray revealed nothing was wrong (other than a broken nail). So, she sent me home with a bottle of anti-inflammatories and called it a day. I found it odd that my dog wasn't prescribed antibiotics, given that he had an open wound on his foot that repeatedly comes into contact with the streets of Boston, but I figured she knew best. Well, one week later and my dog's nail looks scary and like it's about to fall off. I rush back to the vet, who informs me that the nail is infected and he needs serious antibiotics. Duh. Even though it was their error, I still had to pay for a second $70+ office visit in addition to the new meds. So, my dog got an infection that was entirely preventable because of their incompetence and it cost me a lot more money and time than it should have.
2.) A few months later, I wanted to get my dog's teeth cleaned, and I had just received an e-mail advertising 20% off dental services at BBV. I thought it would be a good time to give it a try, so I called to schedule a cleaning. However, I was told I needed to schedule an exam first. There goes another $70+ office visit. During the exam, I was told my dog needed two extractions, in addition to a standard cleaning. They then provided me with a quote for $1,500! Just to give you a sense of how inflated BBV's prices are, they charge $200+ just for the bloodwork alone! When I expressed concern with the cost of their services, the tech left the room and came back later saying they could knock $100 off the price quote by leaving off the thyroid check. Um, why do they need to check the thyroid before cleaning my dog's teeth? Needless to say, I got a second opinion at another vet, who told me that the extractions weren't necessary at all and that the cleaning and bloodwork would cost less than half of what BBV charges. They also told me that a thyroid check is absolutely unnecessary.
3.) The final straw: I went in for a routine kennel cough vaccine update. I called first and was told I could just schedule an appointment with the tech, who would administer the vaccine so that I wouldn't need to pay for an exam. However, when I got there, I was told that my dog needed a full exam (another $70+) before getting the vaccine because it had been more than 6 months since his last checkup (it had actually been less than 8 months). The vaccine itself would cost $40, so it would have cost $110 in total for a simple vaccination update. I asked why the exam was so important for my dog, given that human beings don't need checkups every 6 months and I was told only that it was "important for biomedical reasons." I pressed them on the need for this and they ended up agreeing to provide the vaccine without an office visit, but when I went to pay the bill, they charged me $20 for a "technician appointment" in addition to the vaccine cost. Really? There's no enough profit in the vaccine cost already so they have to charge an additional $20 just to shoot it up my dog's nose?
I am absolutely finished with the Back Bay Veterinary Clinic and will never go back under any circumstances. It's definitely worth considering other options in the area first! -

This is the best vet we've ever had. They are thorough, knowledgable, passionate and have gone above and beyond in the tough situations we have faced. One of our dogs was diagnosed with lymphoma and Dr. Torres was available to us anytime we called or needed to make a quick appointment. When it was time to put him down they made it as comfortable as possible for both him and us. They even surprised us a few weeks later when they gave us a beautiful clay imprint of his paw, such a thoughtful gesture! Our second dog was attacked by an off-leash chow and they have done an excellent job of getting her healed up in a very tight time-frame for an upcoming trip. Some of the other reviews here complain about their prices but for the high level service and exceptional quality of care it is more than worth it... we feel that we have always gotten more than what we've paid for.

Ok, this place is clean and cute. The vet techs are very nice and knowledgeable. Emergency appointments are easily made. That's where the really good stuff ends. And I will point out that these things are not too easy to come by.
However, I've found the high turnover rate of vets quite odd (in the 4 years I brought my cat(s) here, 3 different lead vets have left and been replaced). Every time I came in, I left with the most exorbitant bills, and it took me a while to learn that my vet seemed to be quite the alarmist, urging me to approve 100 different tests, ultrasounds, teeth cleaning, etc, etc. Again, this is for one very healthy cat and one with a minor heart murmur.
Bottom-line: attentive, clean, knowledgeable... but also overpriced and seemed to be motivated by $. -

The only thing about this place is convenience BUT totally not worth it. I brought in my dog to get ONE simple shot and when the bill arrived, they took the liberty of adding additional services without my permission or consultation.
Not to mention the unorganized records which I had to repeat myself several times about a service my pet had months ago only to find out that they misplaced or couldn't find the records.
Bottom line..when you have a business on Newbury street, not only do you have to make sure you cover your rent but also rip off the average pet owner so that they can make a buck or 2.
They will rip you off, go ahead make an appointment for ONE specific service and you'll be surprised to find additional services without you knowing about it.
Last thing...they actually charge to get rid of your pets poop. -

My dog has received wonderful care at Back Bay Vet for the past 5 years. Dr. Torres is great and it is obvious she really cares about the animals there. Their new location is nice and clean and I never have had to wait too long for my dog to be seen. They have always been accommodating for same-day appointments if my dog seems sick and I think they are honest about when care is necessary and when it is okay to wait and see. Back Bay is a little pricey compared to Angell, but it has been much more accessible for me so I'm okay with it. I also really like Back Bay's online system where you can reorder medications, food, or set up appointments. Highly recommended.

Very nice staff that seems to truly care about your pets well being- kinda. As I recall they seem to sell the same crappy science diet type food like a lot of vets. I realize they make a lot off it but it would be nice to see higher quality foods (ie Innova, etc) on the shelf. It was $230 for my cat's regular annual visit.

First off, let me say that this place is not cheap. We have a one year old puppy (Reilly) and when we had to get her spayed we found it was cheaper to take her to R.I. to do it. A few hundred dollars cheaper. Yeah, that's a lot. Now that that's out of the way, I have to say that I love this place. A vet's office on Newbury Street is an interesting thing. Lots of dogs names Foo Foo and Shi Shi visit here. The dogs have more bling than Roxbury (it's ok, I live in Roxbury). But it is not a pretentious establishment, they simply charge what they know people will pay. For your average visit, including check up's, shots, and grooming, I think they are well worth it. It is convenient for me as I work next door. I can drop her off in the morning for her grooming and pick her up after work. The vets and techs there are so good to Reilly, especially Sarah. If I call to make an appointment, she asks the dogs name. As soon as I say Reilly, Sarah gets excited, acting like my dog is the coolest dog ever. She is. I know she loves it there. It's a great atmosphere, very clean with lots of puppies to play with. Finding a good vet has definitely been a word of mouth experience for us, and you can take it from me, you and your pet will be happy here. Just shop around for the more expensive procedures.

Just like other reviews I have to say that this place is pricey. But what do you expect from a prime location on Newbury St. The office is also always very clean and smells nice! The service here is excellent! When I got my puppy, I was definitely a worried mom and called them every other day with questions. They were always extremely polite and answered all my questions without trying to rush me off the phone. All doctors and nurses that I was in contact with are absolutely fantastic and spend as much time with you as you need. Our main Vet was Dr. Beth Waisburd who is a pleasure to deal with and very knowledgeable and attentive. We have unfortunately moved to NY but shortly after my move my dog got sick. I didn't get a new vet yet and called Dr. Beth W. for advice who called me back on a Saturday knowing that I have moved and stayed on the phone with me until I got all my questions answered! Highly recommend!
