what a fantastic little byo! bacio is tucked away just off of lincoln drive on a quiet neighborhood block in west mount airy. all of the usual adjective apply: cute, quaint, cozy, adorable and so on.
there are a few seasonal outdoor tables and seating for about 30 or so inside. the decor is simple: reds and whites with an exposed kitchen in the middle. customers can see the piles of hand made pasta and the chefs at work.
unlike the open kitchen at tinto, the smells from bacio never overwhelm, just warm.
i dined here with my husband and another couple, locals who have been to bacio many times. we split a medium antipasto plate and it was more than enough! it had two cheeses, one smoky and one spiced, two cured meats, roasted peppers, olives, beets and figs.
i had the linguine with red clam sauce for an entrée and was impressed straight away with the volume of clams. none of that "teeny pile of clams in the middle" sissy stuff. this was clam-o-rama. the dish was very well seasoned and tasty, but a little too heavy on the oil.
my husband had the pasta dish with crab and a fra diavolo sauce. as with mine, his entrée was replete with crab and seasoned well. the fra diavolo had just the right amount of burn. our friends ordered the ravioli and gnocchi, their perennial favorites.
for dessert, the tiramusu and ricotta cheesecake received rave reviews from our group.
our service was very good: attentive, well-timed, and helpful with recommendations. they were also very patient with us as we stayed to chat late, past closing time. not once did we feel pressure to hurry it up.
prices are very reasonable and portions extremely filing!
there is plenty of local on-street parking and septa's allen lane station (regional rail r8 chestnut hill west line) is about five blocks away.
I went here for the first time on Saturday. Since I arrived right when they opened at 5:30, the place was fairly empty. The service was excellent. We ate a Caprese salad as our appetizer. It was decent, although not the best I've had. The three cheese ravioli, however, was fantastic! It was freshly made and the serving was quite generous. Sadly, we were too full for dessert.
I will definitely be visiting this place again.
My wife and I were out looking for Manayunk, took the wrong road, and ended up in Germantown. It was 7pm so she pulls out the iPhone and reports that there is an Italian restaurant just up the corner from our lost-ish location that had some good reviews on...you guessed it, Yelp!
So we ditch the rush hour(s) and stop in. Previous reviews are pretty much on point. The fresh handmade pasta was really good and the single waiter is really over extended. The experience took just over an hour and a half (it was not really too busy) but I was in good company so I certainly did not mind. We had the bruschetta, antipasto, linguini with shrimp, mussels, and clams, and the cheese raviloi. All were quite good. Special drive from center city good, mmmm, nope.
If you are lost in Germantown (not likely for any one but Southern transplants I am sure, because so far I seem to only go somewhere via the most retarded route possible) then it is worth the time as long as you are with someone you do not mind spending that time with.
Epic fail. Worst. Service. Ever. Stay away.
We arrived at 6:00 pm on Saturday evening. There was one other couple seated, and a four-top walked in a few minutes behind us.
We ordered one appetizer to share, a chicken parmagiana dish, and a seafood with linguini dish. The appetizer came out of the kitchen about 15 minutes after the order. We finished it quickly; it was good.
And then we waited.
And waited.
And waited.
We watched the four-top get served their dinner. We watched the couple get served their dinner. And another. And another. And another. We watched food come out of the kitchen, but none was headed our way.
No one came over to apologize, or to say that they'd gotten backed up. After about 1 hour 15 minutes, a host (owner?) came over and said our food would be out "soon."
So we waited some more.
After watching the four-top leave --they'd finished their meal! -- we left. It had been 1 hour 40 minutes since we had arrived, and we still had no meal. I don't mind waiting for good food, but short of going out to slaighter the chicken and catch the seafood, there's no excuse for service like this.
As we were leaving --after I explained why-- the host (owner?) apologized in an indifferent sort of way.
I cannot imagine a worse customer service experience.
This is the perfect little neighborhood restaurant. Everything is homemade from the pasta to the soups.
The staff greets you with a handshake or a kiss as soon as they get to know you and really wants to give you a great experience.
It is the best BYO outside of center city...and if it was located in center city...it would still give the other BYOs a run for their money. Try the chicken parm or any of the pastas.
Definitely worth the trip.
This is really a 2.5 but I'm rounding up because I love supporting local small businesses. A friend took me to dinner here an it was less then a memorable experience. First off the olive oil for the three wimpy pieces of bread we were served looked liked it had been sitting on the table for hours, needless to say I was happy that I tend to avoid bread at restaurants. The service was good, the food was just okay. I ordered the chicken madeira, she ordered the lasagna, neither is really worth describing here. If I lived in Mt. Airy I would give this spot another chance, but its definitely not worth the hike from Philly where there is a whole lot of wonderful Italian meals, bread and fresh olive oil to be enjoyed.
Went there for dinner last night for my fiancee's birthday. It was our second time.
Pros: He got the crab & linguine and I got the tilapia with red pepper pesto. Both were excellent dishes!! Seasoned and cooked well. The bruschetta in particular is one of our favorite things. We had it both times and it was fresh, bread was perfect, etc. LOVED IT! Also had the ricotta cheesecake for dessert. It was excellent. Service was also good. Chatty, but not overly so.
Cons: Not a big fan of the spaghetti & marinara. I had it on my first visit and last night as a side. The sauce isn't memorable and the pasta itself seems mushy & overdone (to my taste). I'm not a fan of the decor. It's okay, but could use some dimmers maybe to give the place a little more ambience? It's a BYO after all.
Things of note: There is a wait time for the food since it's all being done by hand, made to order. We compare it to Mr. Martino's (in South Philly), but the food at Bacio is MUCH better and the wait time is just about the same. Mr. Martino's has it beat on atmosphere though.
Overall, we're very happy with this place and will go back again. With a few minor tweaks, this place could be 5 stars instead of just 4.
This is a lovely neighborhood restaurant. The food is prepared in an open kitchen in the middle of the small dining room, you can watch them make the pasta. It's not fancy but it's very pleasant, with red walls, black and white photographs, patterned tin around the kitchen area. It's more like Italian home cooking than restaurant food-- fresh pasta, tender sauteed chicken breasts, broccoli rabe with garlic and lemon zest (which is simple but pure genius, the lemon cuts the bitterness of the rabe. ). The portions are extremely generous, I always take enough home for another meal. I admit I'm prejudiced, Bacio is always very pleasant and it;s walking distance from my house, but it seems to me that the best word for Bacio is "honest." Good food, friendly service, fair price.
I'm updating this review, six months later. People who say this restaurant is slow apparently don't understand that they actually make the food to order. A lot of big restaurants keep everything in a giant freezer. Your order gets tossed in a microwave so it comes out fast. Real food can be slow food. If they're crowded-- and I'm glad to say that they often are-- it gets slower because it's a tiny kitchen.
Bacio is one of our favorite restaurants in our Mt Airy neighborhood; what a gem!
We've even had a dinner party there for my birthday a few months back, and the restaurant was very accomodating. We were able to choose a number of entrees in advance for our guests to choose from, so that the kitchen was prepared and did not have to worry about running out of food. Service is great and it's more of an intimate restaurant, where the staff and owner knows you by name.
We been there many times since. I am in love with their handmade pasta. Also their menu is great- vegan and vegetarian! So it's a great place to take my non-meat eating friends.
let me first start by saying i know in the far corners of the universe QUALITY customer service exists; i discovered this in my recent travels to Hagen das for mango sorbet & five guys (was craving boardwalk fries---and since i wasn't near a boardwalk---and they claim 2 have "fresh, never frozen" fries, well.....)
i digress....
i called bacio last night 2 make reservations later in the evening after reading reviews on happy cow & yelp... the phone greeters energy was off on the phone, but i thought, hey it just might be crowded and he feels rushed.... however, when i called because i missed my turn, he was a brusque & when i arrived i was over the service before it begun; because of a couple of things like his lack of a sincere greeting and lipstick marks & a bug in my water... my appetizer, eggplant and tofu was delicious! yes it was! my entree was absolutely to oily and waaaaaaaaaaaay overcooked, broccoli really should still be green and not wilting in your mouth when prepared....
and let's mention, how our very "polite" waitress informs us that they were out of bread for the night, HUNH?!!! (say that again) OUT OF BREAD?!? did she offer something else or sincere regrets?!?!? NOPE! was the piece of bread that they did give adequate for two people?!? UH NO! wow.... we looked at each other and just said, "WOW!" we went onto enjoy conversation and the cool wine my friend bought for us! we tried it, but....
overall, we just weren't too impressed!
peace & impressions
I loved this place. The guys that waited on us (one may have been the owner) really know how to take care of people. When I worked in resturants, we were trained how to "upsell", these guys actually told us to split something when he thought we were ordering too much! That is great.
The food was great, the service was EXCELLENT!!!!! I really don't want to share this with too many people becuase I don't want to have to wait too long for a table!!!
Love this place!!!
If you're looking for an intimate but casual dining experience this is it. The staff are incredibly friendly and the food is amazing - fresh ingredients - fresh pasta - amazing desserts... do i need to go on? You can watch the chefs work their magic in the kitchen (it's open to the dining area.. you can watch them make pasta!) and there's even a little booth in the back if you require a bit more privacy..
If going with a larger group I would definitely make a reservation, and it's also BYOB..
Be prepared to overeat and then still squeak in dessert (trust me, you'll want to)!!
This is our favorite place to come for Italian. It is small and very intimate. The wait staff is super friendly and they don't hover.
They are very accommodating, once when we went there I ordered the lasagna and they didn't have anymore. So, they made me my own pan sized lasagna, it was huge and so delicious. Also, their meatballs are so delicious and well flavored. The Caesar is a little heavy on the garlic and their caprese salad is very fresh.
I highly recommend this great restaurant and it is BYOB.
If you live in the Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia, Bacio's is an excellent place for a nice dinner out without having to travel far. This small, unassuming BYOB has an inviting atmosphere, with bright crimson walls, candles on the tables, and an open kitchen.
The night we went, there were 2 chefs preparing the food, and one person handling service.
As far as the food, the winner of the evening was the antipasto appetizer. This dish was very attractively arranged, and included marinated mushrooms, roasted red peppers, beets, asparagus, olives, and an assortment of meats and cheeses. We ordered the medium sized choice , and it was more than enough for 3 people.
In general, the portions are very generous at Bacio's. The menu includes homemade pasta dishes, house specialties which are mostly chicken dishes, and grilled fish, rib-eye, or chicken breast. Vegetarian items include ravioli (cheese or vegan), meatless meatballs, and eggplant parmigiana. My pasta dish included silky fettucini, broccoli (somewhat overcooked), and a flavorful white wine sauce.
Prices for entrees are in the $13-18 range.
Tiramisu and canolis for dessert were solid, but not memorable. The coffee reportedly was very good.
I would not call Bacio's a "destination" restaurant, but if you are close by and would like to go out to eat, it is real asset to have in the neighborhood!
Bacio is absolutely amazing. We go there about once/week, and have been thrilled every time.
All the food is homemade, from the pastas and sauces to all of the desserts. If you want substitutions, that is very easy since the food is made to order. The best part is the kitchen is right in the center of the restaurant, so you can watch them make the food right in front of you.
The best way to describe this place is upscale-casual. Wine you bring is generally served in glass juice cups, although wine glasses are available. There is a very laid-back feel to it, almost like I am at a European bistro.
The only thing I would warn against is going with firm plans for after dinner, such as a movie or show. Usually it can take anywhere from 90 minutes to 2 hours for a three course meal, which is mostly the product of having everything made to order. I happen to like it, it means more wine can be imbibed and more fun to be had.
It's Ok. Service is slow, only one waiter on a Friday night?
Needs to update the menu, it's been over two years.
