Baci is an interesting restaurant as it's an old converted church.  It makes the interior atmosphere kinda unique.  Booths on the sides of the dining area can fit 4-6 people although 6 will get a little tight.  Most of the booths get light through a stained glass window that's at the back of closed in glass display box.  The box holds general Italian items (wine bottles, fake grapes etc.)  The interior is fairly dark, so it's good for romantic meals, but not so great if you prefer a bright dining area.

As for food, you get to start out with warm bread.  They bring that along with fresh garlic, and oil.  My kids love Baci solely for the bread.  They could probably exist on it all on it's own.

Speaking of the kids, the kids menu is very reasonable coming in at $4 or $5 for the usual Italian meals.  Spaghetti or Ravioli and Meatballs are a couple of the staples.

As for adults, you can go from fairly reasonable to $30 a plate depending on what you get.  I normally get the Veal Parmigiana and it's excellent.  They have many of the traditional Italian dishes as well as quite a few seafood dishes.  They also have pizza, steaks, and sandwiches.  So this works out well if your party has people who want to spend different levels of cash.

As for portions, they are HUGE.  My veal last night (which came with soup or salad and choice of pasta) was so big that I ended up taking about half of it home.  And I normally don't have leftovers.  :-)

If there was anything I had to knock this place about it may be that sometimes some of the older waitresses seem a little disinterested.  The bus staff however is always amazing, boxing your food for you and keeping your table clean from dirty dishes.

In all, you probably won't find better Italian food in the Plainfield area.  It can be pricey, the interior is dark and old fashioned.  Just be aware.  If you can deal with that, you'll love Baci.

When my husband and I had our marriage blessed in the Church, we held the reception at Bacci's. The food was to die for!!!

Times have changed. Bacci's is closed. While the Route 59 widening project might have been a part of it, the quality was going down for quite some time.

    Still a fond memory...

I have to admit it: I don't like Chicago-style pizza. The thick-crusted, sauce-slopped gut-bomb type leaves me over-stuffed and sick any time I try to eat it. And not surprisingly in the Chicago area, most pizza places specialize in Chicago-style pizza. Not so great for someone interested in the thinner crust type, like me. That's why I love Baci. They have a great thin-crust pizza: not cracker-thin, but with a nice crunch, and the toppings adhere to it decently as well. It's become my family's go-to place for pizza. (Chicago-style fans, fear not, they have you covered too. They also have stuffed pizza, and other varieties listed on the menu; I'm delighted to see that they make an alfredo pizza, if anyone else in my family would ever eat it with me!)

Let me not forget to mention their starter of bread with a small bowl of roasted chopped garlic in oil; we always have to ask for at least one refill on this, sometimes two. It's delicious, but plan on going home directly after dinner or your party will probably knock people over with their collective garlic breath...

All we've ever had at Baci is pizza, but they have an extensive menu of other dishes, from pasta to fish to steak and ribs to chicken and veal to sandwiches, so there's really something for everyone.

The setting, an old church in downtown Plainfield, is charming, and the wait staff has been great, very efficient and professional, every time we've gone.

A thoroughly enjoyable place for an Italian dining experience. xoxo, Baci!

I was very excited to try this restaurant as I was intrigued with the idea of it being in an old church.  Once inside though I was very disappointed.  Nothing of the old church was left and in its place was a dark and somewhat dingy looking restaurant.  The booths are semi-private, large and comfortable but these attributes do not make up for the overall upkeep and decor of the restaurant.

The food while good was by no means the best Italian food I've had nor does it rank in the top 10 of the area. I would not recommend this restaurant at this time.

    What happened?

Back in the day, Baci was a place I'd hit once a week or so.  Good chow, good service, decent enough wine list if you were up for vino.  All in all a solid choice for Italian.

Fast forward to last Wednesday. Wow. Just wow. I don't know if all the area  construction started a death spiral or what, but here's the sad tale:

Wine list - NO. House wines from a vineyard no one had heard of. OK, get a glass anyway; tasted like it was opened last week.

Opted for grilled calamari as a starter. 15-20 minutes later, a small plate of cold miniature ringlets shows up. Not sure if it was even "grilled". Server took it away and off the bill. Got comped a glass of wine.

Salad was fine. Minestrone was actually very good.

Then the entrees came. Italian sampler for me, Eggplant Parmesan for my wife. Both dishes were covered/slopped with a marinara sauce that looked and tasted like pureed tomatoes with barely a shake of Italian seasoning. The eggplant was OK. The lasagna tasted a little hinky; one of the two manicotti was barely OK, The rest I saved for leftovers. Yikes - Two bites and down the disposal it went. The cheese in both the cheese manicotti and ravioli was bad/off/spoiled.

Overall - lazy cooking at its worst. It was like an episode of Kitchen Nightmares.

The only saving grace was our server. She cared. Clearly, the owners no longer do.  Shame really.

Food is fantastic and well worth a long drive. I try to make it once a month. Chicken alfredo is awesome!  Owner is very friendly and always there. Make sure you say hello.

I really am not a big fan of the building and interior of Baci. You see, it is an old historic church in downtown Plainfield. A lot of folks find it neat. I have even been seated near the back in what use to be the Confessional. It just doesn't do much for me.

Now, I do like the food. First, the starter bread and chopped garlic that comes with every visit is outstanding. The bread comes out warm and we always end up asking for seconds. The portions are typical over sized Italian ones. The wife and I usually split one. Maybe we should lay off the bread next time and get our own ? :)

The dishes are good, but it is pretty basic stuff that most establishments serving this type of food can do well. I have never been blown away by anything here, but never disappointed either. As for service it has always been very good for me.

I really didn't enjoy this place at all.  The food was pretty lousy and seemed like something that I could just microwave from the frozen food section, which it being cold coming to my table, it probably was just that.

I would suggest that you keep looking when looking at this place.

Baci is a great Italian restaurant within a neat setting. It is a bit on the pricey side but I would say its worth it. Sometimes on the weekends the wait can be quite long so plan accordingly.

I really enjoyed this restaurant. It is located in the cute area of downtown Plainfield in an old church.  It is a little scary looking from the outside, but it is very cute and romantic on the inside.  Very cute, private booths that area almost a cantina feel.  They gave us fresh bread with roasted garlic and oil to dip it in.  All I can say is YUM!   The pizza was very good!  I haven't tried the pasta, but I do think I will be going back to try it soon!

I live closeby, so I've tried this place 3 times. I don't plan on going back soon. The novelty of being an old church is not a big deal to me. It looks like a dive inside. I think it is overpriced for the quality of the food. The prices warrant a nice ambience. Instead, I find the silverware, plates, glasses, etc all real old, like they've never replaced the cheap junk in 30 years or so. It reminds me of my high school cafeteria from the 80's. The food is just bleh average, nothing to write home about, and nothing stands out, kinda like an Olive Garden with dirty carpet and worn out plates. Drive north a few miles and go to Biaggi's or Francesca's.

Absolutely NOT impressed by this restaurant.  The food was no better than I could make at home and was expensive for what it was. I have definitely had better.   The restaurant is interesting  because it is an old renovated church, but that really only serves to make the layout more disjointed and cramped.  The seating is all crammed together and it's dark. So, not only are you sitting on top of the other tables, but you can't see what you are eating. If you have a baby/toddler, I would definitely not recommend this restaurant. It's hard enough for an adult to get around in the place, much less when you figure in a stroller and a diaper bag.  Our waiter was nice, but it seemed like everybody else was either having a really rough day or just not interested in being at work at all. It's one thing not to want to be at work, it's another to act disinterested and crabby.

I've heard plenty of people rave about this restaurant but I don't really get it.  It's average at best.  I do like the private booths.  The pasta is very average.  The pizza is not good at all.  Somehow though, the handful of times I've been here, it's been very crowded and the parking lot has been full.  Also, the service is usually pretty slow.  I doubt I'd go back here again after giving it several chances and being unimpressed.
