Review from Jenna N.
Los Angeles, CA
Maybe I'm a bit biased because I live nearby, but I've never understood the mass fear of downtown. I've never felt unsafe walking near Babycakes. Not all homeless people wandering around are maniacs, so there's no need to fear the loss of your cape of entitlement when visiting, whether during the day or night.
Parking can be a bit tricky, but not if you know where to look. There is street parking available between 10am and 3pm M-F, and plenty of garages within a block's walk.
I love their cupcakes and love even more that they are vegan. If you've never had one before, you can expect a cake that is slightly drier than most bakery cupcakes, but moist enough. Their frostings are deliciously sweet, though. My personal favorite cupcake is the vanilla cake with rosewater frosting.
Don't knock it just because it's vegan. Worst-case, you'll be out $4. Best-case, You'll be planning your next visit before you even hit the last bite. -

I should probably start off by saying I live downtown and I love baked goods, particularly cupcakes (or anything with frosting).
Parking: It's really not bad. Could I walk? Yes. Do I? No. I think more than anything, people who are not familiar with the area stress out NOT about the lack of parking meters, but because they're in an unfamiliar place and panic when there is not a magical spot in front of the door. A couple blocks walk in ANY direction will not kill you.
Homeless people: Homeless people are poor, not dangerous, and that's all I have to say about that. Don't act like they don't exist on the west side, and if you feel that your life is so in danger, stay home in your mansions with the 8ft security fences.
That all being said...not a fan of this place. As noted, it is very overpriced, and I'm going to chalk that up to differences in ingredients. I tried some cupcakes and also the chocolate chip sandwich cookies with frosting in the middle, which i thought looked especially delicious. I didn't finish either. That's saying something, as I will finish just about any cupcake (grocery store, homemade, boxed mix) that winks in my general direction.
If you're vegan, go for it. I've heard vegan and/or gluten-free people rave about this place. If you're like me and appreciate fatty goodness and a sugar high, your money is better spent at Big Man Bakes at 4th & Main...walking distance, cheaper and sooo gooood in mah mouthhhh! -

I was very excited to try BabyCakes NYC due to all the positive reviews from vegans and non vegans alike, but I was left very disappointed.
1) Their cupcakes taste "healthy" and have a grainy texture. I guess that's not a bad thing if you like eating bran muffins with a glass of soy milk for breakfast, but that is definitely not what I had in mind. I wanted an indulgent cupcake reminiscent of the fatty, non-vegan ones I used to eat in the past.
2) They are extremely overpriced for what they offer. Being located in the ghetto, you'd think with the money they save on rent they could offer affordable desserts, but that is not the case.
3) They do not have a parking lot. You have to drive around in circles for an hour until you find an empty parking meter and then you have to take a fairly long walk through an unsafe area to reach the bakery.
No thanks. I'm never going back and wouldn't recommend it to anybody. -

Los Angeles, CA
Gosh their cupcakes are expensive! However, BabyCakes is bar none when it comes to vegan and sugar-free desserts, so I suppose you get what you pay for. Don't expect the cupcakes to taste like traditional cupcakes because they are not, but for being sugar, dairy, and gluten free, they are pretty damn good. I also love the name of their business...but that's beside the point.

This place used to be 5 stars but since they remodeled its just not as appealing as it used to be. It's not as cute, and well kept.. (thats the reason for 4 stars instead of 5)
BUT the donuts, cupcakes and cookies are still very good!
My favorite are the lemon donuts! They're absolutely moist and very very tasty!
Definitely come here for guilt-free goodies!! -

Last night i went to a friends house for dinner..she had gotten the red velvet cupcakes..we were soo excited to try them..my one friend bit into it and immediately yelled out.."OH MY GOD..THESE ARE AHHHHFUL""! .."IT TASTES LIKE A HOCKEY PUCK".. i thought..oh she is being dramatic..so i then took a bite..oh my god..she was not kidding..it was soo dry and the taste was grainy and just really bad..then my other friend who bought the cupcakes took a bite and she said the same thing..i could not believe it..so i decided to try to get a bite from the middle thinking it could be more moist inside..no dice..these were seriously the most awful cupcakes ever..vons bakery could make a better tasting cupcake..lord have mercy..cant believe my friend made a special trip down there to pick these awful hockey pucks up..YUK!

What a fun little experience. I hated the fact I had to drive downtown BUT the bakery being in downtown Los Angeles reminded me of a time when I was in New York City buying someone sweets from Magnolia Bakery, kind of nostalgic. However, this time I was able to eat the sweets because everything is VEGAN!
First things first, parking was a bitch! No one can drive in downtown LA, parking is scarce and there are MAD pedestrians. However, once you find parking you walk in and see an array of sweets. Sweets such as THIN MINT cookies and MAPLE FLAVORED DOUGHNUTS. I am going to Miami in a few days, so I just opted for 2 doughnuts. Trust me, I would have tried several things here if I didn't want to look like a fat bitch in South Beach.
The place itself is kind of cute. The staff are nice. They offer coffee. Apparently on Wednesdays they serve waffles. It's Thursday right now and I'm kind of pissed about that situation. I want a waffle. Anyways, enjoy Babycakes and tell them to move to Beverly Hills so I don't have to drive to downtown LA ever again. I know I just said I thought it was refreshing that it was in downtown LA but I changed my mind. GHETTO. -

Los Angeles, CA
Stopped by this little store in downtown la to grab some cupcakes and cookies.
We got the red velvet and lemon cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies.
ABSOLUTELY fantastic! They're gluten free meaning healthy! :)Always a fan of healthy foods especially if they're baked foods. The only con is parking BUT it's downtown LA so what can you expect, right? But lovely little bakery to stop by at if you're in the area.
When you step inside, the aroma of all the baked goods just swarm over you.lol -

I finally got to try Babycakes after hearing about them when the cupcake craze first started. I found out that they sell more than cupcakes like donuts and cupcake tops (just the top of a cupcake with frosting, genius!). Their items are organic and vegan which did scare me a bit as the last vegan cupcake I had was just awful. I instead got a blueberry donut and the wife got a red velvet cupcake top. They both tasted good but both had a grainy texture which we didn't like. Good try on making healthy sweets.

Review from Robert F.
If you are looking for vegan or gluten free or agave nectar options, then this is a great spot. Some of the options may be too healthy, and that is why it gets a lower rating for me. When I want to curb my sweet tooth, I want it to be sinful. I like the shop a lot, very NY style....with a very Valley of the Dolls meets urban downtown LA. And, I realize that paints a strange image.
The location is fine, not scary unless you never leave your WeHo bubble. They have good service here, but they really should do some good coffee here. I recommend the cinnamon buns, the cookies and cupcakes. They also do cookies with frosting which are fun.Listed in: Dolce Vita....for the Sweet…

WARNING: VEGAN!
...I wish somebody had told me this...
2.5 stars
I graciously accepted an offer to try a friend's pumpkin-something, but my grace went out the window when I realized I'd been had by an eggless, milkless, butterless dessert-imposter.
I'd rather eat an actual vegan. -

Donut was good, red velvet cupcake was not..I took one bite and put my fork down. And I'll eat pretty much any baked good.
The salted caramel chocolate donut was good & cakey. Would rather go to Crumb or Sprinkles for my cupcakes. -

I've had vegan cupcakes before, but none that made my stomach hurt. Sure I'm a little sensitive, but my carnivore friend with a steel stomach had the same experience.

4 Stars for being Vegan, Gluten-Free and Yummy to the Max.
4 Stars for Vegan Donuts that taste amazing.
1 Star deducted for ghetto-location. I was so scared. Go during the day. There were guys standing outside just to stand and I don't think they had a purpose. They were scary guys too. Daytime visits only! -
Review from Ron B.
Ok, so I'm gluten free because allergic to most wheat products. I found this out after a summer of allergic reactions. Anyway, I knew about these guys from the NYC location, but had never managed to get here.
The brownie ones are the best, because they taste absolutely amazing. The others -- red velvet and vanilla -- were very good if you've had other gluten free stuff, you realize how AMAZING this stuff is comparatively. It's sweetened differently and you'll notice that. But they keep impressively well if you freeze them, the frosting is fresh and delicious too.
So if you find yourself in a pinch and unable to acquire high quality delicious gluten free treats, I'd recommend these guys wholeheartedly. Some places are hyped for no good reason, but I'd recommend that what they do is quite good, fresh and homemade without having to worry about them being hit or miss as you would in some other situations. -

I'm not a vegan, so my review may not be the most fair. This is a cute shop located right next to Cole's. This is a cute shop, with nice helpful service.
The red velvet cupcake was dense and plain .The chocolate cookie sandwich was much better, the cookie was tasty, but the ice cream in the middle had an odd texture. -

So remember when you went gluten/dairy/egg free and you had that sinking feeling that you will never be able to enjoy baked goods? Baked goods that you grew up on living the WASP-y dream in Southern California. Remember how excited you were at first, trying every gluten-free/vegan item you could find only to be sorely disappointed? Remember how GREAT those products looked on paper only to zip you down Fail Ln. whenever you actually ate them? Sucks, huh?
Yeah, well, NO MORE! BabyCakes NYC is LEGIT. I come to L.A. a few times a year and ever since having BabyCakes for the first time in June 2011 thanks to VietBadtz, I AM HOOKED. I literally think of this place almost the entire flight to Burbank and think about it constantly until I arrive and park at 6th and Los Angeles. At that point I stop thinking and flutter into a daze as I zombily walk toward the entrance in anticipation of the cute girls in pink and the love that is BabyCakes.
Everything I have eaten from BabyCakes has been the most amazing tasting baked good I have ever eaten. So moist, perfect, and amazing. Doughnuts, cupcakes, doughnut holes, hostess-style cupcakes, cookie sandwiches... ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH, SO GOOD!! I can't wait for December when I get to eat BabyCakes again!!! -

I Give this bakery 3 stars, because the products are good but are very expensive. They were trying to charge $6.00 for a slice of chocolate cake, I think I ended up getting a tiny brownie for like $2.50. Long story short good baked goods, overpriced

Review from Federica F.
Los Angeles, CA
The small cozy shop is located in one of the most lively and peculiar part of downtown, where gigantic 40's buildings have a New York feeling to them and homeless people tell you that they like you a lot (true story). They (not the homeless) serve coffee or tea in real mugs, which I adore because it's so unique nowadays in California. Everything is pinkish and cute, and their signature mug is just a must-have. I love, love, love their logo and brand image, not only because it is pink, but because it is distinctive and adorable. But this review is not about the overall package that comes with their products; this is about their service and delicious confections.
I was introduced to this bakery by two dear friends of mine, which are aware of my 10000 food intolerance and allergies. I can't have gluten and my system doesn't get along with milk, grains, or sugar very well. I follow a strict and doomed diet: veggies, fruits, lean meat, and tequila. While this is good for my body, this is not good for those nights when you are feeling in need of sweets and chocolate.
Obviously, I can't have Sprinkles cupcakes: they have the vegan option, which is not gluten free, or the gluten-free option that contains dairy. Great job. So when I found BabycakesNYC, I was shocked to find that not only they are vegan (no milk! yay!), they also are gluten-free and sugar-refined free.
On a cupcake/brownie/doughnut binge, I bought the following items on two different occasions:
Doughnut dipped in chocolate
Very Vanilla cupcake x2
Red Velvet cupcake
Chocolate cupcake
Brownie sweetened with Agave
I loved each one of them, particularly the doughnut and vanilla cupcake. I have to say, I don't have a sweet tooth and I just like my desserts to be sweet enough. Therefore if you are looking for the overpowering and sugary cupcake frosting, this might not be the place. Cupcakes are not all dry, but moist enough. HEY, they are doing a great job: NO MILK, NO EGGS, NO BUTTER, give them some props!
The doughnut was exceptional: tasty, moist, creamy, and delicious!
I also had no problem digesting anything (yes I ate everything), and no reaction of sort the day after. I usually break out very evidently whenever I have something I am not supposed to have, especially milk or grains.
Salespeople are also very attentive, courteous, and friendly. The only thing is that the place is very very small, so I would feel bad spending the entire afternoon occupying one table for my selfish desires. Also, they don't have public restrooms. But that's ok.
This place is a gem in downtown Los Angeles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -

Deeeeelish cupcakes and they're healthy, what else can a gal ask for?? The only bummer is that they totally changed the cozy atmosphere ..now it's much smaller. ;( I used to love it. And it's really near my house. Oh well.

I am a big fan of vegan pastries, but my experience here last Sunday was horrible and very disappointing. I bought two vouchers on Gilt City LA and decided to drive up to Downtown LA to redeem the vouchers. The Manager was full of attitude and didn't want to take our vouchers, kept saying," Did you reserve your order!" Never said good morning or even a Welcome to our establishment, nothing. She had RUDE tattooed all over her face.I told her that the vouchers I bought don't need a call in advance, she kept saying yes. I finally said, read the voucher or I am calling GILT!! The then walked back to the kitchen, and said she just refreshed the list. I seriously just wanted to tell her "what list crazyface!" I purchase two vouchers, now grant them please. She never said anything to me, she just went ahead and told the poor guy to give me the cookies and cupcakes. The crazy thing they pulled some random tray from below the cashier shelf and gave us those, really!!! Thanks for the old batch of cupcakes and your side of bad attitude. So, this will be last time I ever go there, now a days there are tons of Vegan dessert places all over the city. This is my GOOD BYE to you Baby cakes, your CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS!!!
P.S. While this was happening two customers left because of the bad service we were receiving! -

One evening we found ourselves meandering around Downtown Los Angeles looking for parking. I must have gone around the block some five times until I scored the best parking spot. I looked around and there, in front of me, was BabyCakes NYC. Oooo, I just had to go inside. As for my friend, well, she followed suit.
Babycakes NYC looks like a most of the cupcakeries around the L.A. area, but they have a unique product that didn't disappoint me...Death by Chocolate.
I love the Death by Chocolate Cupcake, because it keeps my addition to chocolate in check. It's a perfect parcel of chocolately goodness! -

been wanting try this place for looooooong time. cute little shop, clean.. parking and downtown pain.. plus shooting movie right outside establishment, not sure if positive or negative part of overall experience. selection and customer service was ok [good variation of products, just low stock], pricing so so, but vegan items purchased were definately yummy and felt fine after ate. if in area would deal with side issues to grab some vegan baked goods again, difficult to obtain in general anyways.

Came here right before they were closing. Of course I wasn't expecting much but I did still want a good cup cake to eat. They had two flavors left vanilla and chocolate.
I decided to grab the vanilla one and man was it hard to eat. Super dry and the frosting was nice but I do believe way too much of it was on here. I guess they should of thrown those out.
I probably will give this place another try because I have heard so many people raving how great it is but maybe it was because I grabbed a cup cake late at night instead of getting it in the early times.Listed in: Hungry for sweets !! :)

My friend bought some cupcakes because she is The cupcakes are tiny compared to "normal" boutique style cupcake shops. But I have to say that they do offer a lot of different variety of things.
Maybe because I didn't eat it the first day it was store bought but most of the cupcakes were dry. The taste was okay. Not like I would bolt out the door for somemore. Most likely won't buy any unless I'm with a vegan. -

Selection of gluten-free cupcakes and other pastries is the highlight of this establishment. Standouts are the lemon and red velvet cupcakes, but one can not go wrong with the others varieties. They all taste delectable - impossible to eat just one. One thing to note is that I have found the selection to vary from visit to visit, with the best selling items always available. A must-stop if you are on a gluten-free diet and want a special treat.

Covina, CA
In a nutshell: not impressed. I could barely eat half my cupcake.
It's in a great location (next to Mignon, down the street from Cole's and The Association, three of my favorite places), and the people who work there are very friendly. The cupcakes are cute, with a nice flavor selection (I was there on a Tuesday afternoon around 7pm).
My friend and I ordered Lemon Tart and Tiramisu cupcakes, planning to split them. I love lemon flavors and vegan tiramisu cupcakes are delicious, so I had high hopes! And then...I tasted them. Cold (like they had been refrigerated and then put in the case? But not in a fresh way) and dense, I couldn't get past that to really remember the flavors...and that's not a good sign. They were chewy and just felt really heavy and unappetizing. I didn't even want to finish them, which never happens. I love cupcakes (vegan and non-vegan) and never pass up an opportunity to eat them...but I won't be back to Babycakes. -

Baby Cakes
I'm gonna tell you right now
That I appreciate it
You're the one for me
Yelper Juliet R conviced me to go to this place. She said there's this great vegan bakery that sells all organic, sugar free, gluten free and dairy free products.
What? First of all, I want sugar in my cake. I am not vegan and I don't care for organic stuff because they are pricey. But I can never say no to Juliet because she is sweet like a cupcake.
The bakery was so cute. Tiny donuts caught my eye when I first walked in. I was kinda lost and the ladies there offered help right away. I was still lost trying to figure out what I want while snapping pictures.
I got myself a chocolate chips cookie, a tiny brownie and a sugar cinnamon donut. It was kinda $$$ because the goods were not very big.
Cinnamon Sugar Donut: it was crumbly and a bit dry, but very good. It's not too sweet but sweet enough for my sweet tooth. It tasted like dry churro.
Chocolate Chips Cookie: very thin but delish. I don't know what they put in that cookie but I wanted more.
Brownie: Super small. I can eat 4 of these in one sitting. This brownie was good and I was surprised that small brownie satisfied my chocolate craving.
I didn't feel bad after eating all of them because they were not greasy. Plenty of metered parking on the street if you're lucky.
Baby Cakes
Maybe there's a possibility

4 stars!! I am a fan. I can't wait to go back there again.

What is it about these girls that work at cupcake shops? I just want to take them all home and play dress up.
Jenn B. Don't hate, girl. You know I loves you more than any dairy fartin, sugar high lovin gal but vegan cupcakes? Eh... Um... I need a lil cow barf in my sweets, babe.
Stopped in here after my "make up" birthday dinner that I owed my chick Jenn.
For all you veggie worshipping, save the world, my poo smells like green pastures peeps, this place is great. For all you gluttonous, kill the f*ckin cow and slap the f*cker on my plate peeps? You're much better off going to Big Man Bakes.
Don't get me wrong. This is a great addition for people who want options and the gals here are just lovely and sweetListed in: Dirty Downtowner

I never eat sweets. But i was craving something after my brunch at Petes and Big Man Bakes weren't open so I walked 4 blocks to this place, without knowing it was vegan and wasted $12 on a iced coffee, red velvet cupcake, and a cornbread jelly thingy (only because I dreamt of cornbread) and IT WAS DISGUSTING, I took a bite and literally walked out. Velvet cupcake was okay. Coffee was decent.
I mean, $12 will get me 2 carne asada burritos. And if I want sweets, Im wanting the nastiness fatty, all the junky stuff, to satisfy my cravings-- babyCakes just didn't cut it for me. Fuck that word Vegan. I need to think about this next time. -

I am *not* vegan (but I have tried!), and neither is my fiance, Adam. In fact, we stopped here after eating lunch at Cole's next door (by the way, we much prefer Philippe's!).
I'm generally open to trying everything, but my honey is a texture eater (that being said, he doesn't like much of anything when it comes to whole and/or raw foods).
This place was AWESOME! Adam had the chocolate-chip cookie sandwich with the vanilla frosting, and I had the pumpkin/cinnamon cupcake. Adam even said that the cookie was one of the best he's had - and when he shared a bite, I had wished I gotten one too! It was delicious!! My cupcake had the consistency of a muffin as opposed to a cupcake, but I liked that it didn't feel like a brick in my belly after eating it, and I really liked the creamy frosting.
I can't wait to go back, we've been talking about taking a trip... Hmm... perhaps I shall surprise honeybuns after work with some skinnybuns! -

The secret New Yawker in me, made me randomly walk in here before meeting my friend at Mignon & buy cupcakes before having wine & cheese.
The cupcakes were in the fridge & i completely understand its vegan but... maybe i expected more.
I will say that the brownie cupcake is very good but the other red velvet cupcake i had was terrible. Thank God I'm not vegan. I would shoot myself if this was the only dessert i could have. No offense people. -

Hicksville, NY
I give this place 3 stars because their stuff is pretty good for what it is and the fact that they use agave nectar and spelt flour in some of their things makes me happy.
The variety is good and they have awesome flavors, but when i get excited to try a new cupcake i am usually very disappointed in the flavor.
Take the chai cupcake for example. sounds like the BEST flavor to me that could ever exist BUT it tasted nothing like chai, just one of their normal vanilla cupcakes. Tasty, just not what i was expecting.
Everything is WAY too sweet and over priced. $4.50 for a little cupcake? I understand that much higher quality ingredients are used, but honestly its a bit steep. (sometimes in the morning the stuff from yesterday is buy one get one free)
They have a great selection day to day and Babycakes is perfect for gluten intolerant. I do opt to go here when i am craving bakery type things, but it is by no means a place that i would rave about.
The inside is cute and retro. It's a very small place and gets busy at times. There are a few areas to take a seat and books to read, but it is only practical when there is no one in the store.
fave: chocolate chip cookies---(also used for the cookie sandwiches at Stogo--awesome!!!!!) -

Waited SO, SO long to get here!!!
Location is very small, don't blink or you might miss it! I believe there was one small table inside. The entire atmosphere is very charming and cute.
Tried:
- Glazed donut (not sure what it was): BEST item! Reminded me of a rum cake, spongy, cakey, soft, soaked/covered with a wet glaze. BEST.
- Blueberry donut: Also awesome. More crispy, cakey, nice bits of blueberries.
- Brownie cupcake with vanilla frosting (purple): YUM. Soft and moist cake with bits of chocolate (or chocolate chips), very nice frosting.
- Hostess cupcake cupcake: Dry, crispy chocolate frosting - not a very good homage to the original... but looks so pretty.
- Cookie with chocolate frosting: Awesome cookie... but sugar overload with the frosting. (Good for a bad, bad day.)
- Cinnamon bun: Dry, but okay.
Best:
- Donuts. I love donuts. Donuts....
Parking:
- Street... there is a $3 lot around the corner.
Pros:
- Decadent vegan dessert!!!
Cons:
- A bit pricey, and $.50 for a cupcake box?!!! -

Ok, so here's a breakdown of what I got:
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Sandwich with Vanilla Filling. If you've never had a vegan mouthgasm, I highly suggest you get your ass downtown and shell out the $5. http://su.pr/2hcXZD
- Red Velvet Cupcake. Meh on the flavor. Kinda on the dry side but I also waited until the next day to eat it. http://su.pr/8phUv4
- Chocolate Mint Cupcake. It's like they magically captured the essence of those popular Girl Scout cookies, Thin Mints, and baked it into vegan awesomeness! http://su.pr/1yx9cL
- Pumpkin Cupcake. A-Ok but I wasn't amazed. http://su.pr/307QK0
- One Brownie Bite. OMG! Why did I buy only one? Chocolatey good times in my mouth :)
- Chocolate Chip Banana Bread. Moist. Fluffy. Good balance of banana and chocolate without competing flavors. Get in my belly!
So even though there were a few I could do without, I'm still really impressed by the variety of what is available. It was also nice to walk into a bakery and know that I could eat anything in there without having to ask a bunch of annoying "is this vegan?" questions. http://su.pr/55qET1
To top it off, the staff was super sweet! Especially when I was ogling the desserts with amazement and speechless with excitement! Check out my box full of treats: http://su.pr/7RTkEi and http://su.pr/2WlltA

WOW! There are really such things as HEALTHY cupcakes?? AWESOME!!! I had the 100% organic red velvet cupcake and it was actually quite delightful. The donut that my coworker got was also pretty damn good. I believe he ordered the strawberry jam donut or something along those lines.. Some sort of berry.
Anyways this is a totally cute vintage like bakery.. I mean the name of this place itself is already so cutesy.. "Babycakes".. It feels like this would be a neighborhood bakery belonging to a suburban community in the land of white picket fences.. Seriously! We need more places like this in LA! The girl at the counter was so warm and friendly!
The parking structure next to it was terrible terrible terrible though!! It is next to fashion district so it reeked right when we got in to the elevator and well pretty much the whole way to the bakery and back.. But hey, you win some and you lose some.
I am a total cupcake fanatic so it's nice to find cupcakes where I feel like won't gain 10 pounds from. Go BabyCakes!
