Ok. I have mixed feelings about B.Rose. I've never had a bad experience here, it's always just been "meh." First off, I have a TON of hair so getting my hurrr did is always a big to-do. I get partial highlights and get my long, curly hair trimmed with a few layers in the front. Usually end with blowing it out straight. Never really have a "style." My appointments usually take up to 3 hours. This being said, B.Rose is still really expensive. I'm not a total cheapskate, but my appointments can get up there in price. I went to college in Southern California, and paid Orange County salon prices and I still walk out of there going "well there goes my grocery money for the month..." (priorities ladies, priorities)
The salon itself is usually pretty clean, but I could do without the weird wall art. Lime green, orange and black swirls? Don't add to a calming salon aesthetic. I love the design of the mirrors and chairs (they remind me of old school kitchen appliances) and there is a ton of great natural light through the whole place which is a plus.
So if it's expensive and not the greatest environment, Jo, then what keeps you coming back? I'm glad you asked. Stacey. My stylist. She is a pro! I bring in pictures of what I want, and she does it. Bim! Bam! Boom! Heidi Klum's caramel lowlights? No problem! A Jessica Simpson-esque blowout? Done! Also, she isn't a big one for the chit chat. Which I LOVE. Getting my hurr did is a good chance for me to zone out and catch up on the latest crappy magazines, and she doesn't try to make awk stylist small talk. Bonus points. I am from California and would wait until trips home to get my hair done back there, but I'm glad I found someone to trust with my flaxen mane.
They do carry my top two favorite hair product brands - Kerastase and Bumble and Bumble (even B&B travel sizes), but come to think of it, so does CVS.
After trying two different salons that came highly recommended (and ending up highly disappointed) I had to update my review. I went back to Anya last night after finally getting fed up with bad cuts that don't last long.
She took me back without making me feel bad or pointing out the absence. After telling her everything I wanted (growing my old bangs out, shorting a little for the summer, blending my layers in better) she cut my hair PERFECTLY!!! And she told me that in about 2 months my seemingly awkward bangs (that she totally blended in) will turn into a great layer and adorable cut - I totally appreciate her recognizing that I won't be back soon and giving me a cut that will last a while!!!
I guess she is worth the price!!!
(Anya is amazing and all my friends go to her now. She charges $67, but other junior stylists charge less... I believe around $35.)

I used to drive an hour into the city just to get my hair cut here. They are amazingly great at… Read more »
I came here because I saw a girl with a great cut who recommended her stylist. I initially thought I'd get her cut (a pixie) but then I balked, since I wanted to see if the stylist would get my hair first and give me a cute shaggy bob. (I guess this has taught me a lesson that once you find a good stylist, to stick with that person...)
I think it was a bad sign when, while my hair was being washed, 3 girls including my stylist were talking about how much they loved Mariah Carey's new song "Obsessed." ???
I agree with the teenage-ish unprofessional vibe. In the middle of styling another stylist came over with a Chinese menu and they proceeded to talk about what they were going to order for a few minutes. Wow. I feel really special, thanks. Enjoy your Chinese. Just don't drip soy sauce into my hair. I agree with this reviewer: "And to top it off, the haircut was all wrong. I spent that night looking at the mirror dumb-founded and wondering how long it would take my hair to grow out and look halfway decent. It was just a very unpleasant experience." I am now going to another salon tonight because I don't have time for the stylist's "vision" to show up 3 months from now. It is unevenly cut and unattractive. I have to wear it back in a very small ponytail because it just looks wonky. When she finished, I think she could tell I didn't like it. She said before cutting "once we dry it, let's see if you'll want it shorter." I don't like that "let's see how it goes as we keep cutting" method. Can't you just take control of my hair and have a vision for it? Sometimes clients need you to take a little more of the reins, instead of making it a collaboration. (They do tell you to bring in a picture on the website, which is also a bad sign, I think...) I don't think she knew what to do with my thick, wavy hair. She cut it into an uneven boxy shape. I couldn't believe it cost $70!!! I was disappointed and now I have to go shell out more money to fix it.
This review is for Emily, she cuts my hair. The front desk can be snooty at times but don't let that stray you from the talent inside the salon. Back to Emily..I have fine, thin hair and busy life style that is in much need of a wash and go cut. Emily is amazing, she gives me the best layers and style that makes my morning routine delightful! I highly recommend her if you are looking for a stylist and the cost is average or maybe even a bit below.
I tried out a few different hair salons after moving to Chicago and have no need to try anywhere again after going to B Rose! Anya has cut and colored my hair and done an amazing job on two separate occassions. This last time she spent extra time showing me a new styling technique. I am very picky about hair cuts and tend to leave salons unhappy more often than not but I've been thrilled with the results. They never have tried to push products on me, the salon is funky and clean. Easy to get to, right near the brown line.
I have only cried over a haircut twice in my entire life. Once was in 8th grade (an ill-advised Jennifer Aniston 'do) - the other was several months ago, when I went here at the recommendation of a friend. I think I can talk about it now, but wow, was I ever upset when I left after my appointment.
After arriving on time, I waited around 10 minutes and realized that my stylist was one of the people sitting across from me in the waiting area discussing an article in People magazine. Not cool. I did not feel welcome at all.
I talked to the stylist about how I usually have my hair cut and what I was looking for. I'm pretty easy - long layers, no color or anything, and I usually ask for my hair to be flat-ironed before I head out the door. Pretty simple. The stylist proceeded to try to sell me on "glazing" my hair the entire time I was in her chair and said, among other things, that I have the ashiest blonde hair she'd ever seen. Ummmm. Wow. This is the first time I've ever walked into a salon and had someone tell me I need to color my hair. Most of the time people ask me how I get it to look so awesome and natural. Guess what? It IS natural. ;) And I plan to keep it that way as long as I can! Unfortunately my stylist didn't want to take no for an answer, which got very annoying after about 10 minutes.
She then proceeded to try to sell me on some hair product that cost about $50 - I got the impression that she was very irritated that I was turning down everything she offered. And to top it off, the haircut was all wrong. I spent that night looking at the mirror dumb-founded and wondering how long it would take my hair to grow out and look halfway decent. It was just a very unpleasant experience.
Luckily since then I've found my hair savior - I won't be coming back to this place.
I have gone to B. Rose for several services: Hair Color, Hair Cut, Eyebrow Waxing and Manicure.
For hair color and cut, I had great experiences. I would recommend both Erin or Emily. They are both fantastic. I keep going back. Definately work the price.
The Eyebrow waxing was ok. Definately overrpriced in my opinion. But the shape was nice and the redness after the waxing didn't last long.
The manicure was also ok, nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary and slightly overpriced for a manicure. But otherwise, no complaint.
So if it wasn't for the eyebrow waxing and manicure prices, I would give 5 stars. Go for a haircut and color and you are set.
I have been going to B Rose Salon for almost 4 years. I found the salon thanks to a New City review that indicated Beth as the best in Chicago for Japanese thermal straightening. I have had my hair straightened there 3 times, colored there, cut there...and now that I have moved to Miami, I fly in to continue to get my hair done there! No one other than Beth will ever EVER touch my hair! Why? Because she's that good! How do I know? My mother had her own salon for over 30 years, I have another 3 aunts who have their own salons (2 in Italy), a friend who does hair for the fashion shows in Milan and another who does hair for an atelier in Rome...THEY ALL RAVE about the quality of Beth's work on my hair! She is a master!
And I love the salon. I have always been treated extremely well. The staff is accommodating and professional. I have never had to wait more than a few minutes to be taken care of...and it's clean and welcoming!
I love getting my hair done there! And Beth is amazing!
I decided to go to B Rose Salon because its right around the corner from my house.
I got there right at my appointment time. I was told to sit in the waiting area where I had to listen to these 4 girls sitting around chatting. They were lounging around, texting, talking etc. After I wait for 20 minutes for my hair stylist to show, it turns out that she was one of the random chicks sitting there texting right in front of me. Very unprofessional.
And for the random price of $53 for a haircut (I maybe have the thinnest, most manageable hair ever) - it wasn't worth it.
The first time I visited B. Rose I was a little skeptical, as I had been going to the same hairdresser for three years. I knew it was time for a change, so I took a friend's recommendation and was pleasantly surprised. I was assigned to Debbie who was extremely personable and suggested a more modern haircut/color which I have gotten multiple compliments on. She was helpful in terms of explaining what color would compliment my complexion and also reminded me to come in for free bang trims. Not only was she great, but the entire staff made me feel comfortable and everyone wanted to make sure I was taken care of by offering me water/drink and magazines while I waited for my hair to dry, etc.
I certainly recommend B. Rose-it is pretty reasonably priced and they give amazing haircuts! I will definitely return!
What a horrible experience. I went in for a color with Stephanie, was charged $75 for a single color and was not treated well. She spent most of the time with me planning her night out with her co-worker and talking like some teenager clubber.......she also had the nerve to get her own hair done while she was in the middle of my color.
In addition I had to get cash to tip her. When I walked back in she looked up from the desk, gave me a dirty look, said nothing and went about what she was doing. I still tipped her (which I shouldn't have) and then she gave me a fake smile. I will never go back to this salon again.
I have and will continue to tell not only other retailers on Southport (which I know well) but also my friends about this place. Stay away....
B. Rose looks reasonable, with hardwood floors and trendy, pointy-heeled stylists. Its location is convenient too, near the Southport strip and the Purple line.
I've only visited B Rose once: last December, I needed a haircut and decided to give the salon a go. The result was ... alright. My hair didn't look drastically altered, for the better or worse, although I had paid upwards of $60 for a different cut. The stylist (unfortunately, I can't remember her name now) wasn't particularly friendly either, and she offered to sell me two or three "necessary" products as I was paying. No thank you.
Love this place! Prices are average for the city (my haircuts are $40, $60 for all-over color). I highly recommend Gaby - especially if you have long hair and like it that way. I don't love division of labor - sometimes another girl will wash my hair while my stylist is unoccupied, which seems unnecessary. Overall, however, I would recommend this place to anyone.
UPDATE - they've raised their prices. $45 cut/ $75 color for a junior stylist. Quite downtown prices for this uptown place. I might be looking elsewhere.
Update 11/26/07: Yes, they've raised their prices again. That's 4 out of 4 visits that the price has increased for the exact same service. C'mon people!
I've been going to see Colee for over a year and have been very pleased with her personality and the cut and highlights. However, every time I go, the prices go up. No one bothers to let me know in advance or offer any reason for the increase. They just remodeled but I'm not sure anything really needed updated. $145 plus tip for a simple haircut and partial highlight seems pricey for Lakeview. It is easy to get an appointment (you can call on Tuesday and get in on Saturday). All of the stylists are friendly but the front desk folk seem snobby.
I was a little hesitant to try B. Rose because of the somewhat negative reviews on Yelp, but it's so close to my house I had to give it a chance. Also, it is one of the only salons in this area open on Mondays.
I ended up very pleasantly surprised with my experience. My stylist, Liz, actually listened to what kind of cut I was looking for. I've been to a couple other stylists in the past year who don't listen, and I end up leaving with basically the same cut I had when I came in, only shorter. With Liz, I ended up with a new, edgy style. She was also easy to make conversation with. I'd recommend her!
I think that this place is great! Joette gives a great manicure. Stephanie gives a geat haircut, and Callie is AWESOME with wax.
I've been going for 3 years!
I have been going here for about 2 years and usually get my hair cut by Colee whom I love. I've also had Liz and she is great too. They get the four stars.
I deduct a star because I had a manicure at B.Rose last year and it was pretty bad. The manicurist had only been doing it for about 9 months and she seemed really unsure of herself.
Overall though, B.Rose is a comfortable, non-pretentious salon that is pretty affordable for the area.
I feel the need to write this review for 2 reasons: to inform others of my experience and to let Beth (the owner) and the managers know why I left.
I have been getting my hair done at B.Rose for over 7 years, or almost as long as they've been open. I have gone through several hair stylists through years because like all salons people come and go. I loved getting my hair done here and kept coming back because of the personal touches from the stylists. Stylists from B.Rose even did all the hair for my wedding!
Over the past 2 years, many stylists have left and moved on. I've heard some bad stories about the way they were treated and witnessed an uncomfortable confrontation among workers! Most importantly I'm upset at the lack of customer service especially for repeat (7 yrs. remember) customers. I'd think that after 7 yrs. of repeat service I'd be given some perks. I'm not saying anything for free but a discount every once in a while would have been nice. Also I think it's bad customer service to not stand behind your product. Almost every time I received a service at the salon I bought something: conditioner, gel, spray, etc... I recently tired to exchange a product because it was not the right product for my hair. I was turned down by the manager and was forced to buy something more expensive in return!
I feel that this salon had a lot of potential, classy management, and a good service back ground. This is 100% lost now! I will NEVER come back because I feel my repeat business was not appreciated and I have moved on to better. I have found a salon that treats me with good customer service and a place I now feel welcome!
Good luck!
My first visit to B. Rose was a fantastic experience. Before moving to Chicago, I always got my hair cut at Minardi, on the UES of New York (and yes, the fact that I lived in St. Louis at the time didn't stop me). Needless to say, I happened upon B. Rose salon through the Minardi network of referrals. My haircut was with Beth, the owner, who in addition to listening to what I wanted (and really knowing how to cut thick hair) regaled me with stories of doing hair and makeup for Diane von Furstenburg during her summers at the Hamptons with the Minardis. The prices were not out of line with the service and I feel I got a haircut that will grow out gracefully (until my next visit, that is) rather than something that will fall flat after two weeks.
Ania does my color, and cuts when I need them. She's the bomb. She rescued my hair a little over a year ago after someone else turned it orange (and then white... and then gray. Seriously.) She always asks what I want her to do, but I honestly don't even need to tell her. My hair always looks phenomenal when I leave (if I do say so myself). She is worth every penny I pay her.
As for the salon, it's not one of those hoity-toity, hush-hush, Myah-is-not-my-real-name-and-I-can-only-wear-black -to-work kind of places that you might find in, say, the Gold Coast. Or the late 90s. It's a laid back, unpretentious environment. If you showed up in your pajamas eating a breakfast burrito, they probably wouldn't bat an eye.
I went to B.Rose salon for a 30-minute massage. The price was reasonable ($50). It is located right in the heart of the Southport shopping/eatery area. It is much bigger on the inside than it appears, and they offer all the basic salon services.
My masseuse was Claudia. I have had several massages in the past, and this was what I expected. They play relaxing music and have a fan on during the massage. If you live nearby, I recommend it. But not necessarily a spa to travel far for.
I only went to B Rose because my favorite stylist switched salons. I went to her to get my hair cut and colored, and I walked out of there having paid about $200!!! I love my girl, but there is no way that I will ever be okay with paying 100 bucks for a partial highlight that doesn't even include a cut. Seriously....with the economy the way it is, I cannot believe what some of these places charge for their services. Growing up in Michigan, I was used to paying 70-80 bucks for a cut and color, and even that was on the steep end.
When I moved to Chicago a few years ago, I was frustrated when I was not able to find a stylist in the city that I liked as much as the stylist I saw in the suburbs. A co-worker referred me to B Rose because, "I've never seen anyone walk out of there looking bad." I ended up getting a cut with Colee, who is fantastic, and I've never strayed. I've seen some rants on the price, but for me, a good haircut knows no financial boundries!
I mainly go there for Claudia the massage therapist and she is great. My husband really likes her (hmmph) also. I've gotten my nails done there too and my hair. I find the other services a bit too pricey though. I don't mind paying for a massage though. Also their facials are good!
Yesterday I had the pleasure of walking into B. Rose Salon for the first time. I am usually weary of trying neighborhood salons because for as long as I can remember have always gone downtown for most of my salon needs. However, for Christmas I received a gift card for a massage and decided that it was time to cash it in. Thanks to my cab driver, I arrived at the salon super early, all the employees were not even in yet, but I was welcomed in (thank god because of course it would be the coldest day of the winter) and offered a drink while I waited. Upon entering the wait area, I immediately fell in love with the modern decor and bright colors not to mention the music. I am used to hearing soft jazz or classical music while waiting at a salon, but not here. My ears were treated to the sweet sounds of George Michael and other pop music. (*Note this is not a sarcastic remark, I actually like George Michael and wish he would quit being all cracked out and tour the States!) When it was time for my massage I was led to a back room that was quiet, calm and warm. My masseuse Claudia worked hard on my back to loosen it up and when time was up I found myself disappointed that I did not book her for longer.
Overall it was a good experience.Everyone was friendly and prices were comparable to other salons.
Beth is amazing! She salvaged what was possibly the worst haircut of my life! She really is an artist with scissors. She also made a few B & B product recommendations which I've used and LOVED! I love the atmosphere at B Rose... hip, but relaxed and friendly. Location is great with tons of street parking near the door which lazy people like me will love!
I've recommended this salon to all of my friends. Definitely worth checking out and DEFINITELY worth the reasonable prices!
BEWARE the WAX. The wax that they use is, how do I say this eloquently, um, DIRTY. My dermatologist "strongly advised" me not to EVER go there again. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but, come on, how hard is it to keep wax clean and sanitary?
Super waxing and amazing facials but my haircut didn't wow me. They do free bang trims which is nice but I expected more for the price. I will definitely be back for their other services, though.
When I first moved to Chicago and lived on Southport, I was in dire need of a haircut and highlights. I always walked by B. Rose and saw so many people coming in and out, it appeared to be a good bet to try. My first experience was excellent, and I've been a regular ever since. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, and the overall feel is professional and knowledgable. Ask for Stephanie, she is fantastic!
I went for a brow wax and it was one of the more annoying experiences in my life. The lady who waxes is very nice but when she talked to me every fourth word was my name. I know she was probably try to be nice and remember it, but I was going to pull my hair out. Then she refused to give me a brow wax because I use acne medication (which I've checked does not deplete my layers of skin) so instead she plucked them. My roommate gets her hair done here and she likes it (hence the two stars). But I do not recommend waxing.
I have gone to this place about 3 times and all 3 times I have dreaded. First, I went to get a facial. The lady who did it was super sweet, but when you're waiting and checking out, that guy at the front desk is a jerk. It's also stupid expensive. If I'm going to pay that much, then I expect to be treated with a little respect. I give it 2 stars only because the girl was sweet. I don't know how those people continue to work there.
ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE!!! Went in for what I thought would be a quick bang trim with Lisa B. and wound up with much more than a trim. Let's just say that I had side swept bangs that were about 3/4 of an inch longer than my eyebrows and now I have 'pixie' bangs that are about an inch above my eyebrows. Not at all what I wanted and I clearly articulated to Lisa B. that I wanted my bangs trimmed to sweep just beneath my eyebrows. About half though she admitted that she had made a "little" mistake and cut this one area too short but was blocking the mirror so I could not see the damage that had been done. When she finally stepped far enough to the side that I could catch a glimpse I could not believe how short her "little" mistake was. She said she thought she could hide it beneath the hair she had yet to cut. WTF ... are you kidding me??? Frustrated, I told her to stop cutting immediately. Long story short, I told her that I was upset and this was unacceptable and the stylist next to her ended up TRYING to fix my bangs. I stress the word trying because there was not much she could really do. Clearly, I will not be going back nor recommending anyone to this salon.
I love Cali's waxing! I didn't look closely at the wax, but I will next time! She assured me that it was clean when I asked a few visits back. The wax they use is way less painful (it's "cold wax") then most other places!
I was referred to this salon and stylist by a friend -- so I made an appointment with Stephanie. She wasn't friendly but I was the first appointment so I figured she had to warm up. I don't usually write reviews but she gave me the worst hair cut I've ever had! I have curly hair and she admitted that she did too so I thought she knew what she was doing. I asked for layers (and my bad because I should have said "not short") and she gave me the shortest layers. The top doesn't flow with the bottom at all. After she dryed it, I honestly looked like Pat Benatar! It's always nice when your family & friends ask you "what's up with your hair?"
