I had a Cuban recipe that called for smoked ham hocks, and since the last time we needed ham hocks we bought them from Kroger, and were severely disappointed, I decided to try B&W meat market and it was such a good experience!

The lady behind the counter was extremely helpful in getting me what I needed.  She explained the process, and made recommendations.  There was a huge selection in everything from the normal grocery store selections like sausages, steaks and stuffed chickens to pickled pigs feet and rabbit even.  The best part seems to be the price. $44.00, and lots of meat selections later I'm on my way home excited to try my new recipes.

The Cuban beans and rice that I made was absolutely delish!!!  I really believe the B&W Meat Co's ham hocks were the reason the dish came out so good.  I will definitely be back!

I go here as much as I can to get my meet to stock the freezer. They have specialty meats available for trying something different. Love there sausages and smoked meats. Not too fond of their pan sausages though.

There aren't that many butcher shops in Houston, and this one's by far the biggest.  B&W has a huge selection of meat stuffs at reasonably low prices, as well as some grocery items and dry goods.  They have house-made sausages, knuckle bones for stock, offal, and pretty much any cut of meat you can imagine.  The meat counter spans the length of the store, with a dozen butchers at work behind it - cool!

Unfortunately on this day I was in the market for short ribs, and theirs were looking mighty puny.  Everything else looked amazing though, and I'm sure I'll be back!

This place is incredible. So far I have had:
Froglegs, oxtails, smoked deer sausage (hot and regular), pigtails, rabbit, calf liver, quails and garlic baloney. All have been cheap and amazing.

Besides being a N. Houston landmark; it's one of the last honest to goodness butcher shops left - you're not in Kroger anymore, Toto!  Every part of the cow is available for your culinary pleasure in addition to great fresh chickens, frog legs, rabbit, boudin and really large gulf shrimp.  Did I mention sausage?  About 30 different kinds to work your way through and I have not had a bad one  yet - beef/pork garlic is my favorite.

Once you discover this place you will have a hard time buying meat, wrapped in cellophane and put on a truck, from the grocery store ever again.

This place rocks.  It's weird with the rise of farmer's markets, that the classic butcher shop isn't heard from as much.  But when you find a good one, damn, you realize what you've been missing.

B&W isn't meant to compete with what you're getting @ CM or WF.   And even Pete's with it's selection of the rare (Wagyu brisket) caters to a specialty market.  But if you're like me, and are looking for a local business to support instead of your local mega-mart, this is your place.

The butcher case runs the width of the entire store.  The sausage selection is flat-out ridiculous.  All made on premise, they must have at least 2 dozen varieties of every combo you want.  Jalapeno cheese venison? Check!  Smoked and jalapeno boudin? Check! Andouille and Tasso? Check!  Spiciest hot links ever? Check!  Also worth trying are the dirty rice stuffed chicken breast, and their assortment of proprietary spices and rubs.
The price is going to beat any grocery store you go to, and the service (old school take a number) has been fantastic every time I've gone.

I have to touch on a couple of the criticisms I saw on an earlier review.  When you got to a real butcher, you should use them for what they are, and become part of the process.  If you want lean ground beef, ask them to give a 90/10 mix.  If you want a steak, have them cut it for you.  If you don't like the look of a rack of ribs, slab of brisket, or thickness of a steak... tell them.  You have your own person there to take of your needs, if you want something ask.  I mean geez, they''ll even process your deer for you.  And per my experience: they've  always worn white coats, hair nets and have changed their gloves every time they change cuts.  But like they say:  The two things you never want see made in-person are sausage and legislation.

I'm not sure what to think about this place. It's been awhile since I've been to a real meat shop. These days it's rare to see the workings and going-ons behind the scene of any restaurant or market much less a butcher shop. I doesn't gross me out but it does make me more doubtful of the sanitation and cleanliness of the place (and the meat) seeing twenty people milling around (Are they wearing hair nets? Did that guy change his gloves? Why aren't they wearing white coats?), hacking bones, managing the employees and selling beef.

I'm also not use to buying meat that doesn't have any information with it (How lean is the ground beef? Where does it come from? How long has it been sitting there?). I got a sirloin steak and when I cut into it I was leery about the freshness. Also, I'm a cynic. Why is this meat less expensive than meat you'll find in your neighborhood grocery store? There are many questions left to be answered.

They do have quite a selection: a ton of different types of boudain, every cut of beef, sliced sandwich meat (bologna), even oxtails.
The rest of the market is small and the vegetable section was not worth giving a second look. But they've also got rubs, BBQ sauce, and marinates to make it a one-stop meat shop.

I go here at least every two weeks for some cheap and good quality meats.  It is always crowded, you must take a number.  But it is totally worth it.  Their sausage is great and they even have a deli case.  It is an old school butcher so expect nothing fancy.  You can pick up a few market items like chips, soda, canned goods and "fresh" vegetables.  The veggies are not really fresh so just swoop by the farmer's market on your way home.  Otherwise, this place is where to go for great basic meats.  They do have some game, but not a lot so this is not the place to get your "fine meats."  But if you are looking for some fresh ground chuck or some steaks and sausage, this is where to go.

Don't worry if you pick number 41 and they are on 16, they go pretty fast.  And even though they are busy they are quite nice and service oriented butchers!

I'm roasting chicken tonight!  Can't wait!

There are a lot of good points about a shop like this, and the availability of every part of a cow is a good one. If I need to make tongue and liver pate, this is the place to go when I cannot find it at a local all-natural vendor.
The meat is good solid quality and not dyed and soaked like the supermarket rubbish. It is also very affordable, especially in large quantities and they do have the best non-organic roasting chickens in town.
My big secret purchase there is frozen rabbit, but my oxtails and a lot of my sausage get rave review, and this is the place they were purchased.

    I agree with Mike W...
    This place ROCKS!

Also you realize why Houston is one of the FATTEST cities...places like this.

Best Andouille to be found outside of cajun country. The rubs and spices are worth having in your spice rack.

My family has been coming to this place ever since I can remember.  I recall when I was very young (about age 5), I used to love coming here with my mom, grandma and grandpa because there was a rack that had cool toys on it.  I always walked away from this place with a new toy.

Now on to the good stuff!  This place has high-quality meat.  My grandma buys her meat from here a lot.  No matter what kind of meat it was that she needed, she got it from here.

And one thing that I've always loved about meat markets is that they make boudin.  I'm a boudin fanatic, but not all boudin tastes great.  B&W's boudin is "okay"...not the best.  But as for the other meats, you won't be disappointed.
