This is not fast food. Everyone who's made a real burger knows it takes a good 20 minutes. If you're in a hurry, order ahead. But if you want a thick, juicy burger like your buddy would make you on his grill and fresh fries that actually look like potatoes, this is the place. Hang out and watch some BET while you wait, or pick up a movie at the Redbox in the parking lot.
I went on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty quiet, but my experience did not make me fearful for my safety as one reviewer mentioned. (I'm a nerdy white guy and felt very welcome) The staff was friendly and courteous, and I chatted with a fellow customer about how big the burgers are. :)
It's Hawthorne...if you're good in the hood, you'll be fine.
About $8 for a big-ass burger, more fries than I need, and a Coke. -

3.5 stars. You definitely want to call ahead. Waiting here is pretty ghetto. You don't want to eat here. They do take credit cards.
I love their burgers, juicy and flavorful, thick patties. I've had a lot of these kind of burgers and B&R are right up there just behind J&J and Fred's downhome. The bacon guac burger is perfect. Strawberry lemonade is nice and sweet.
I personally don't care for their chili, but I have yet to find a hood burger place with edible chili.
This would be a four star without the trashy location, sometime lack of parking and questionable service. In my top three for tasty burgers but I don't go there so often because of the location. -

Very old school - which is good.
Death by grease.
I will do it again & again.
Wear old clothes if you plan to eat it there, because this is messy stuff.Listed in: South Bay (& LA Harbor) Food

Food and service is 4 stars but...the fact brothas were smoking up the parking lot and I saw a drug deal go down in the barber shop next door I gotta give it 3. Pattys are huge and fries are fresh cut

Is the crowd different from Manhattan/Hermosa Beach? ohh yea
Does the place have bulletproof windows? yup
Would some of the people that hang out in that strip mall fail a background check at your job? probably
Should you call in your order before getting there so you don't have to wait 15-25 min? for sure
BUT.....
Don't listen to some of these reviews that try to scare you from coming here....
Service here has always been cool.....and all the customers (including me) are friendlier than they/we look......
I've had the King Burger w/ Cheese and a side of fries a few times. The fries are cut thicker than most fast food joints and are good......but here's the thing about the burger. When you eat it there, it's A LOT better than if you get it to go and eat it 15-20 minutes later.

I tried one of their Beef Tacos too.........are you effin serious bro??!!! It was one of the best "fast food" tacos I've ever had!
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
But here's the important part of the review:
The Monster Royal Burger is off the hook!! We finally had a chance to go in and try this a few weeks ago.....You've gotta try this burger at least once, even if you're splitting it w/ someone! I got mine w/ bacon (you can get pastrami or for a little extra, sausage). Was worried about the chili b/c I had tried it my first time here and it was no good, but this time around I liked it.....The Monster Royal only has 2 patties, but it's easily more filling than FatBurger's XXXL Burger (w/ three 8 oz. patties)
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
If you're feeling up to it, every October, they have a contest to see who can eat this burger the fastest. I think the best time ever is a little over 2 1/2 minutes.....start practicing -

My friend was in the mood for burgers and this place had been on my radar for a while so I called it in and picked it up 15 minutes later. I ordered the MONSTER ROYALE which came with 2 BIG beef patties, cheese, bacon or pastrami (I chose bacon), chili, fried egg, and the usual veggies. My friend and I also ordered chili cheese Fritos and french fries to share.
Let's talk about this monster royale burger because it deserves it's own zip code. The thing was huge. Definitely need to share or save for lunch the next day. I had to eat it with a knife and fork. The beef patties looked freshly made, the chili was home made, the bacon was thick and crispy, and the burger as a whole hit the spot. I was full after 3 bites. The fries are freshly cut from potatoes and cooked to order. My favorite was the chilli cheese Fritos. They made me so happy :) I think their chili is packed full of flavor and pairs up well with the Fritos.
I don't want to clog my arteries every day or week for that matter so I will stick to ordering from this place every once in a while but I'm glad I tried it because everything I had was delicious! The place itself is a whole in the wall establishment that's located in a little plaza next to 7-11. The inside is small and kind of run down and not the best neighborhood BUT the employees were very friendly. Not a place I see myself dining in but it's only a few min from my house so I will definitely call in an order again.Listed in: I Speak Americano

Review of the Grandma Burger and Sweet Potato Fries.
Bottom line: Solid 4 stars for this $7.75 combo.
Delivered in an unassuming brown paper bag and wrapped in simple deli paper the Grandma Burger is a beast. The hand formed 1/3 pound patty didn't seem to loose too much weight after cooking because the burger still had some heft and thickness to it. It was juicy and flavorful. The top bun was laden with a thick smear of mayo, tangy pickle slices, lettuce and mustard. The bottom bun had more mayo, relish, hand cut grilled onions and grilled green bell peppers (which was a nice surprise). The individual ingredients were fresh and delicious and tasted great assembled all together. My only suggestion for improvement was to choose a softer bun so that it doesn't break apart from the weight of all generous helpings.
The sweet potato fries met expectations in crispness and taste. The portions for both burger and fries were very generous.
Service was fast and friendly. Look for the B&R truck when it's in your area. -

Definitely need to call in ahead of time. I made the rookie mistake and ended up watching almost two episodes of "Friends" mid-day. I was woefully unprepared and it was definitely a lesson in the importance of "unagi."
The draw of B&R is undoubtedly their massive Monster Royale but you can get all the thrill without the Pepto Bismol in their other burgers too.
I went with the B&R Pastrami Combo w/ cheese, Fries, and a Strawberry Lemonade (costs extra).
The total came out to $9.29
The thing was a messy but juicy burger and the pastrami had the texture of bacon as opposed to the curly thin kinds you get at delis or Fabulous Burgers. I actually preferred it done this way and it made the burger that much better.
The fries weren't anything special but the Strawberry Lemonade was fantastic! There were actual bits of strawberry and lemon in the drink and it was not overly sweet. Because of that, it was refreshing when paired with the salty burger and fries. I liked it so much that I considered going back just for another lemonade.
Overall, I still think Hawkins is a better burger but B & R is closer to where I work so it could make a nice substitute for my fatty burger cravings. But next time I will absolutely call ahead. -

Review from Elysia M.
B & R's definitely gets 4 stars in my book. Although I have lived practically down the street from them for several years, I just recently, two weeks ago, decided to give them a try. Since then, I have had burgers from here several times and I must say, they are quite delicious. Their fries are pretty scrumptious also, although I'm not a HUGE fan (on one occasion they were extremely hard and unpleasant). I am afraid that now that I have actually had them, I'm going to want to go ALL the time...this will NOT be a good look for maintaining a decent weight lol :-/
Prices are fair, I suppose. Lastly, (& the major reason for the missing star) they take PRETTY long to finish your order, so I have learned to call ahead. If you order in advance, then you will be in and out!! Definitely WORTH IT nonetheless. Call in, pick it up and ENJOY ENJOY!! -

Will come here when I haven't ate in 12 hours. these burgers are enormous, and definitely worth every buck. My chiliburger was the extremely messy, Im not too fond of mildy sweet chili, so I dont think I will order anything with chili here again, but the burger alone is worth it. Recommend calling ahead of time, it literally took 20 minutes for our order.

A tasty burger that Jules Winfield would kill for. Oh Fu(K, it was so good!!
I haven't been here since 2008 and was still a yelp newb so I didn't post back then. But after making a return trip last month, I see B & R is just as good as it was then. Another in the ever growing list of great hood burgers I've tried these last few years.
This is located in a cramped strip mall with maybe..maybe 20 parking spots, if that. Huge painted windows advertising specials, wings, chili fries, pastrami and their MONSTER sized burgers. The ROYALE.....2 1 lb patties with every fu(kin thing on the menu stacked on top? umm I'll pass. Way too eFFin big for me.
This is made to order, so be prepared to wait. None of that fast food assembly line burger production here. If it would take u 15-20 min to make your own from ground beef at home, expect at least the same here. Cuz these blow away your onion soup/A-1/Manwich concoctions you or your mom used to make.
Chili cheese King burger, no onions. DAMN! So damn good!! These are homemade, thick, peppery and well seasoned patties. I don't mind waiting 15 minutes for this kind of goodness. And I HATE waiting..in general. But some things are worth it. These have a great beefy flavor, medium well with a hint of pink and a great crust surrounding the meaty interior. Very good chili on the burger as well and i'm looking forward to trying their turkey burger and chili. Fries were fresh cut and amazing. Blows In n Out's out the water due to the crispiness and the liberal amount of seasoned salt.
Can't wait to make another stop next time I head out to visit the folks.. -

A friend and I were heading back to my joint after attending yet another friends loss with cancer at Faith Central Church on Florence. (Rest well Ro!)
My pal suggested lunch and I remembered this place from Alton Brown's show "Feasting on Asphalt"
I agree with all the fellow Yelpers about this place but it's all worth it.
We wimped and just had cheeseburgers and fries, but what a handful!
Delish and I will be back but maybe not around lunch. -

It's what you'd expect from any of the mom and pop burger joints, greasy, average quality meat. I went to the food truck only. Although it's cheap, the meat is dry and the burger has way too much relish and mustard. It's like a fatter fat burger. Not a fan.

I love this place. Delicious, juicy burgers. Went there yesterday and had the B&R Pastrami Burger, some chili-cheese fries and a lemonade.
The pastrami burger was great... I've had their burgers before and the patty was juicy as ever. The pastrami was good... not amazing, but good.
The lemonade is amazing. Not too sweet, not too tart. I could drink a gallon of it.
The chili-cheese fries did not disappoint. B&R makes old-fashioned/home-style fries that really sopped up the chili well.
'Twas great. -

Burger #81: Alton Brown Ate It!
Somehow I missed the episode of Feasting on Asphalt where they hit up this place. But after driving by and seeing the window signage, proudly announcing the presence of The Monster Burger, I couldn't stay away. For those who think B&R is in a bad neighborhood, go to Hawkins, 3 Bears or Mom's and then get back to me. This is quite posh by comparison.
Knowing how these places operate, I called in my order when I was still 15 minutes away using my Bluetooth stereo (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). I ordered the royal burger with bacon and no veggies, they just get in the way of the meat. Once I arrived, it was still another 5 minutes before my food was brought out to me and it was a pretty good looking burger.
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Eating it was a joy, like watching your son hit his first home run in little league or seeing Paris Hilton go to jail. The meat was juicy and the cheese and chili combination made for a good goopy mess on my tray. The bacon was a little too crisp and broke like glass when I really had to compress the burger to fit into my mouth hole.
The burger was really good and the staff was nice and friendly, but I would have to put this place below Hawkins, Fresh & Meaty and a few others. Still, it's a mile from my house so I'll probably come back at least a few times.Listed in: Burgers Burgers Burgers, Chili Chili Chili

5 stars because of the unparalleled experience and to offset the morons who work location into their rating.
Where else can you get this kind of burger? Nowhere.
This is a mighty burger, there's little I can add that hasn't been said about the might of this burger. Bring loose pants or something, fast for a day or whatever. You're weak if you can't finish it.
Oh, and *please* west side and LA pussies, stay west. We don't need you in the south bay stinking up the place and whining about the 'rough' location on Yelp (Alton on the Food Network didn't seem to mind the location). Stick to WeLa. -
Review from Tim S.
I lived in Hawthorne until I was 21 and never tried this place before tonight. It was featured on Feasting on Asphalt with Alton Brown on the Food Network. Chris Cognac aka The Hungry Detective...he had a show on FN for awhile takes Alton there. Anyways....Chris Cognac is a Hawthorne police officer and I have had the privelage of meeting him once. When he broke up one of my parties! Lame....anyways.
I rolled up and parked in the lot. There is alot of hustle and bustle going on like others have said but....its not ghetto and if you feel unsafe around that area, I feel sorry for your little sheltered life you live ;-). I called in my order so I went inside and paid and waited about 5 minutes before my food was ready. They have a Street Fighter 2 video game set up and there are multiple signs on it. First one is written on a piece of cardboard and taped on the top that says 50cents. Another piece of paper says to play at your own risk. And the topper was a little sign that says Sagats fireballs are automatic or something like that. That made me laugh. So I guess if you choose Sagat all he does is throw fireballs and you cant do a damn thing about it ;-).
I get home and unwrap my order. A King cheese burger and an order of fries. The burger was awesome! A big 8oz hand formed patty that was seasoned well. Standard bun and toppings. A real tasty burger. One of the best I have had. The fries were just ok. They are really thick cut with the skins left on but they werent really crispy. They were hot and tasted ok but if they got cold they would suck. I only ate about half of them. They have a pretty large menu and they claim they purchase their beef every single day. Its fresh, tasty and inexpensive. A great burger!Listed in: Amazing Sandwiches, Los Angeles

Part of the Ghetto Burger Marathon:
Our third stop, and midway point, is a burger joint featured on Alton Brown's Food Network Show Feasting on Asphalt. B & R's Old Fashioned Burgers located in Hawthorne is in a slightly more commercial neighborhood, located in a small strip mall. Similar to Hawkins, they too have a massive specialty burger. This one is called the Monster Royal Burger, stacked with two 8oz patties, egg, cheese, bacon and chili. We quickly find out that all these places have the exact same menu, with the same burger names. King, Double King, Royal, and Grandma, each with 8oz patties, all configured the same.
So to stay consistent, we get the King Burger. A 8oz patty, with chili, egg and bacon. You can feel the love in this burger, fresh hand pattied burger, home made chili, and thick bacon. The chili was a little bland compared to Hawkins, and needed a little more tomato sauce and spice. But the meat was nice and peppery, and salted perfectly.Listed in: Ghetto Burgers

"Now that's a tasty burger!"
You can taste the love in this fresh, hand patted, seasoned burger, home made chili, and thick bacon... Mmmm, forbidden burger.
No fancy French bun here just a plain old ghetto bun and thick cut fries with the skin. Simple, good and cheap.
Two negatives:
1) They are located in a less then desirable strip mall
2) Very slow -

People slay me by stating that certain South Bay areas "aren't safe." i'm sure they are basing their opinions strictly on the demographics of the area. But I digress.....
B&R burgers food is really delish. They remind me of homemade burgers that you can get in any household that has a flair for hooking up great soul food meals. The fries are made fresh to order and are well seasoned with Lawry's seasoning salt!! Mmmmm!!
I've been trying to eat less and less beef these days. I always go for the Turkey burger with chili, cheese, and pastrami. For my ladies that don't have a huge appetite, I'd recommend ordering the kid's turkey burger because I know I'm never able to finish an entire regular turkey with cheese.
If you love old fashioned burgers that are not cooked until you order it, don't cower and stick to regular so/so burger joints in affluent areas. Go to B&R and satisfy your homestyled burger cravings!
Also, make sure you phone your order in if you lack patience. The wait can be rather long. -

Where to start on this one... I went here for lunch on a Friday with a couple buddies. I ordered the pastrami burger and fries. It took about 15 mins to get our food. That gives you a lot of time to check out the surroundings. I thought the burger and fires were pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd send 98% of the people I know here. Maybe it was just the day I was there, but the whole vibe was weird and way off.
There were a lot of shady looking peeps hanging out in the parking lot that Friday afternoon and some deals going down. There was a black Expedition curb parked right outside with 4 shady looking dudes in it. People would walk up to the SUV and hand something off. Then those people would walk over to a green Ford parked 20 ft away a pick something else up.
Then as I was leaving a girl in a white jump suit, white fedora, and a big old ghetto booty (34-24-47) ran up to my car. She also had those summer teeth (some are here, some are there). She then proceeds to ask me if I'd be open to going out with a black girl. Not you crack whore! I started looking around thinking maybe it's a carjacking or something. I could see a dude watching her the whole time. He started walking our direct and I knew it was time to boogey out of there. I thought for 2 seconds that maybe it was her pimp; but that thought quickly changed to... she's not giving BJ's with those teeth.
3.5 stars for the burger and 1.5 stars for the whole experience. I wonder what it's like on a Fri or Sat night there. -

Are you insane? The Royale burger contains two huge patties with fried egg, pastrami, bacon and chili sauce. And the burger contains bacon bits? Fantastic! God bless America. I'll take one please, my Dr's appointment is far away and the burger breath should wear off by then.
A memorable place (I don't care if it's in a rough neighborhood). A real mom and pop place that has a nice well used look, I like it. I saw a man on a horse troll by (what the...?). I saw tall detective looking fellas talking and drinking milky opaque drinks in a bottle (I originally heard about the place from an article in Rave newspaper written by a detective).
Side tracking here: What are they drinking? Then I saw it in the refrigerator. Jones from Seattle. Got one, was blown away. What rich flavor!
I even bought like a dozen from the place just to handout to coworkers (Here, you must try these! I told them as if I've never had anything else but water in my life.)
Note: This is the large bottle Jones with opaque liquid inside; similar in size and shape to the large Arizona ice tea bottle or that other drink with a lizard mark on it (I can't recall the name right now). The small bottle Jones with clear soda inside which I saw later in a supermarket I don't care for.
Good burger. Eating this is an adventure. For me it's not to be eaten every day or every week because they're so rich. I like it for their shock value also, planning to take Japanese visitors who dig Big Macs there one day and tell them this is standard fare. -

"Miserly Burger Tour" continued Friday (4/23) in Hawthorne...
Inside of a strip mall you will generally not find a quality burger or anything of much substance however B & R might be the exception.
The bright side to a strip mall--the parking. After a quick survey, spotting a television feeding the playoffs and ample seating I bee-lined to the counter to study the menu. While they are known for their "Monster Burger"--an image of a towering/ imposing burger is posterized to the right of the counter--I decided to keep it simple and order the B&R burger with some onion rings and a drink for $6.86.
After a ten minute wait my burger arrived. A generous hand formed patty--about 3/4 inch thick--with shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, mustard and mayo all served on a seedless bun. It was delicious and ample. The patty was well-seasoned and very juicy--perfect execution. The onion rings were smooth and golden in complexion. Totally satisfying.
B & R might not be your ideal spot to enjoy your meal (whatever your taste) but they do serve fantastic fare for relatively little and are definitely worth going to if you find yourself in Hawthorne. -

I've been living down the street from this burger joint for 10 years and never thought to stop in and try. I have issues with certain eateries, but decided to give this place a try anyway. My younger sister treated me to a cheeseburger a week ago and the burger was really good, however I wasn't satisfied with the fries. The fries tasted like stale potatoes chips, but whatever. In order for me to do a proper review, I decided to give B&R a second try. Today I shared a King burger with my sister and this burger was soooo WELL SEASONED, the meat was MOIST and to top it off the fries was on POINT this time. The fries were FRESH and HOT out the grease. Ummmm I may put this place in my rotation!

Awesome burgers, good fries and a form follows function atmosphere. This place is all about the food, not about the "flair" or the commercial experience or the celebrities. Its worth the drive if you are far away, unless you typically hang with Paris and Lindsay...in which case you should stay in the Hills and eat $25 tapas plates with other anorexics.
Also, if you get a regular burger (not the royal -- which I can recommend) you can get out of there at $5 for a really good burger, fries and a drink. Consider ordering ahead of time (like the regulars) if you are in a time crunch (or you've double parked your Mercedes SUV). 5 stars. -

This was made famous by the great Alton Brown, which is all you need to know. Try this place.
The location is sketchy. If you are Cockasian or regular asian, try to act cool to fit in. Say things like "what the hizzle my nizzle" and walk with a subtle limp if possible. In the parking lot there are mostly crappy ghetto cars with a sprinking of some "ballers". When I was there, a big black dude gets out of newest flashiest Mercedes, contrasted against cars like primered 1987 buick station wagon with chrome windshield wipers. A few minutes later a big ole huge fat ginormous brudda rolls fat ass out of a 1972 Chevy with ultra gloss candy Green paint with gold flake riding high on gold spoke rims. I'm laughing as he's waddling over until a stacked 22yo hottie. in high heels gets out of the car. WTF? Maybe I need a green car.
Uncomfortable, but it is all worth it. It's all part of the experience at B&R Burger. Best burger ever. (Sorry Dad.) Been there twice in three days and can't wait to get my courage up again to go back.
10-15 minutes to get food. You can call ahead. Monster Royale is amazing. I think the chili makes it. Tastes good going down, AND feels good for hours after due to the quality ingredients. It's not a greasy gut bomb like you might be expecting.
Bring your bratty kids here. It will be a good experience for them. -

O-M-G!!! Pure burger delight! And that coming from someone who is not much of a meat eater...
Been driving by this place for awhile and the wubby was dying to try it. I resisted for a while, but finally gave in. Wow, am I glad. The burger was magnificent! I didn't try anything fancy, just a plain cheeseburger (which was huge! Who needs the monster burger?). The meat was extremely tasty, well seasoned, and seemed like it was just hand formed in the back and thrown on the open flame. None of this pre-made patty crap. Really did taste like a great homemade burger. The fries were good, I prefer mine crispier, but they sufficed.
The wait was long, but well worth it. We watched whatever football game was on their tv while we waited... and listened to some older dude yelling into his cell phone while inhaling his breakfast, telling someone he would "be there in 5 minutes."
The service is ok... nothing much to it. You order at the counter, pay, sit down, and they bring you your food. Seems like it might be a family run business, but I wasn't nosy enough to ask. Everyone was nice and friendly.
On our way out, we got a box of the homemade cookies that were on the counter. Again... O-M-G! Super chocolately chocolate chip. $4 for 5 cookies (which is steep), but after eating them all, we decided they were worth it.
We made a pact to only succumb to B&R's once a month, or we'd soon be wobbling up to the counter. Hmmm... I think we are just about due for a visit... -

My rating is for the food, Five stars for the service (and price), very nice people....
And using McDonalds as a bench of 1star (those little things you get at AMPM that have been sitting in a hot glass box for 3 days are a zero).
Ordered the Monster Royal burger despite the obviously too low price. The thing IS a monster, and if you are really hungry, you won't be for a while after this one. I personally feel that the majority of people on Yelp are far too generous with their ratings and should reserve the 5 stars for one place in a particular category and judge all others by comparison.
The meat was of the lowest possible quality available which is how they can offer a 6oz burger for $3.20. Tasted like the stuff you get in the chub (plastic meat bomb) with tons of little gristly bits to work on (not well seasoned either so maybe I noticed the texture more because of this). The bun was a little stale but stayed together after forming a paste on the inside. The pastrami was very chewy and fatty, the egg - just right (nice and runny).
Liked the fries and the seasoning salt was not too overpowering as it sometimes can be (they were soggy but not overcooked).
I will head back and try the turkey burger and think that everyone should give this place a chance and see for themselves... -

I've been going to B&R for about two years now and their burgers do not disappoint. It's not a gourmet burger by any means but a darn good simple, blue-collar burger. The meat is seasoned very well and cooked to perfection. The buns and add ons are simple and fresh. If you're looking for a simple, no-frills, blue-collar burger for a reasonable price then this is the place.

This place was pretty awesome. Me and my boy Jon had the Monster Royal Burger and it was insane (check out the pics posted by others).
Some people complain about the location but that doesn't really bother me I'm all about the food.
Burger meat was ok, chili was perfect, pastrami was good and egg was awesome, fries were also really good. Put some fries in your burger it makes it taste even better. Overall a really solid meal especially when you consider the price.
The only thing I was sort of perturbed by was that we waited for about 30 min to get our burger. I understand that this isn't a fast food joint , but 30 min is a long time to wait. If you dont want to wait be sure to call ahead. -

Very good, juicy, tasty burgers. I loved the fries. They had just the right amount of crisp and seasoning... they were fabulous! The wait for the food is longer than if you went to a fast food joint, but it is because they make your food when you order it. Everything tasted fresh and homemade.
My only complaint was not about B & R burgers itself, but the small and cramped parking lot. -

MONSTER ROYAL Need I say more? If you are planning to go here order the Monster Royal! This burger is Huge and Delicious as Hell. It has everything you want in any meal.
So in all reality there is a burger eating contest to see who could finish this "Monster Royale" Burger the fastest but since it was end of March out of curiosity I asked one of the people there how long it took them.
Six minutes and Ten seconds, she said.
My friends looked at me and told me I could beat it so I decided to go on a practice run. So I ordered one and paced myself and my friends telling me to keep going till I finished.
It took me 4:45 seconds to scarf one down, not to mention trying not to choke over the wisecracks of my friends. Wow, new unofficial record the lady said, the cooks were definitely amazed until...
My friends all excited called another one of my friends to share the news of the 4:45 burger rampage....
Fast forward an hour later... my friend shows up at my house and says he could probably do it in less. We order one and he does it in a flat 4 mins! WTF?
Me being as prideful as I am said bring it and I slam a second one down in almost the same time..
2 Monster Royale Burgers in under 10 mins... thats crazy..
I'll be gone till Novemeber....(see video clip above!) -

One of my coworkers (she's into Chowhound) heard about this place and gathered a big group of us to go here for lunch. Yeah unless your afternoon tasks involve napping (or yelping) don't go here for a weekday lunch.
Tackled the monster burger here. Two monster patties (it's like a pound of meat) with bacon and egg and the yuuzh. Protein and carbs are fresh. Big steak fries that truly taste like potatoes, beef patties formed right before grilling, good egg on top.... All fresh. But is it good?.... Mmmmm not so much. Tomato and lettuce were wilty and drowning in mayo. And my friend found a questionable curly thread/hair in his fries. Yeah I was done eating after that!
Food takes a long long time, presumably because they have one cook and everything's made to order. The women behind the counter were really nice to us, especially since seven Asian/Hawaiian/hapa kids look quite out of the element with the predominantly black clientele. Maybe they were excited about reaching the Gardena population. Maybe they thought we got lost on our way for some pho. I don't know. But this place is ghetto. Ghetto without the fun.
It's a good stop if you're on a burger tour, but otherwise, skip. And inspect your fries before you eat them.
A monster burger, fries and an XL coke will put you at 10 and change. -

The Royal is a must for any troo burger lover.
Yes, the place is kind of a dive. It'll take you a good half hour to get the burger after you order it (reminds me of BBQ King). You probably won't go to this place at all if you're afraid of black people, which you insist you are not, even if you find yourself uncomfortable in this neighborhood (that discomfort means btw that you are). But all that aside, this is your last task, in your L.A. burger search.
It's not the best burger in L.A. I suppose a kobe beef burger with a homemade bun would be that. But in the world of fast food burgers, again, this should be the Super Bowl of your burger tour. It must be 1 or 2 pounds. You get chili, a fried egg and either bacon or pastrami. Bacon sounds better, but believe me for some reason, the pastrami works better. The burger can feed 2-4 people. It sounds like a big, sloppy mess. It is. It tastes great.
