This place runs a good business. Good prices and great service. They seem to quote me honest opinions without trying to upsell everything. I think they are aware that most people are on student budgets so they are fair and in return, get repeat customers. Cute guys with nice legs doesn't hurt either. They're quality of bikes seems to be on par as well. I will bump this up or down after I do the big purchase of buying a bike.
I admit the first time I strolled into this shop aimlessly (I was just finishing a ride, killing time, and had no intention to really buy anything), I felt I got the cold shoulder treatment when I strolled through the shop just looking at stuff. Instead of the usual inviting conversation I get from most bike shops I casually visit, I got a much more palpable "You gonna buy something, or what" kind of reception.
That was many years ago; and, since then, they've regained some of my trust and respect. The turning point was the afternoon before one of Davis' most popular cycling events, when I needed emergency repair to one of my wheels, which they handled expertly and expeditiously, even when they were slammed with work requested by dozens of other cyclists in town for the same event.

It's amazing a town can support so many bike shops in such close proximity. Then again, this town is Davis, I'm actually astounded there are only 5. Of the bike shops, B & L caters more towards the college crowd than free wheeler or Wheel works. They offer practical and fun bikes above all else. If all you want is a bike to ride on campus, they can do that, or if you want to trek across America, they have that also. Their staff is incredibly knowledgeable, and always working on their own bikes in their spare time. Granted, they have strange goals, hitting 70 miles an hour, that just isn't safe, or building a bike using only the cheapest parts available, but that doesn't mean they can't do extraordinary work on normal bikes. Whenever i have spare money, i inevitably find myself heading down here to pick up something that i might possible need, or just something i want to have.
