A few friends took me here about a year ago and I've been there a couple times since then.
I really like this place, it's a traditional Japanese restaurant and tables all have dividers, giving you more privacy with your party.
Last time I went, it was a bit noisy since there were 3 or 4 tables that were celebrating birthdays - among them a table with about 5 children. But normally it's not that noisy. The waitresses were all very cheerful and did apologize if it was noisy.
One time I went they did forget my drink until I asked for it, but otherwise, they have been great.
I usually order the beef sukiyaki and it's delicious!
I definitely recommend this place as they serve some of the other dishes that aren't the typical stuff (typical being: tempura, teriyaki, yakitori etc) and it's a great atmosphere.
This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area. Why? Let me count the ways
1. They have the best lunch specials. For $10 you get three small portions of my favorite Japanese foods (e.g. teri chicken, shrimp tempura, and unagi) plus a salad and soup!
2. I crave their Alaskan Black Cod Kasuzuke! It is an amazing variation on butterfish.
3. They serve traditional soup/pot foods like dobin mushi, chawan mushi, and have amazing side dishes.
4. The waitresses all wear kimono, speak Japanese, and take really good care of you. Who doesn't want to be greeted with Irashaimase? Or be asked if you would like the "chekku?" The last time I was there, Noriko checked our tea mid-meal and replaced the old tea with new tea because our tea was too cold! Loved it and loved her!
5. It reminds me of family, good times, and great food!
I am a frequent customer at Azuma. Their miso soup is perfect. It's not watered down like other Japanese restaurants and comes with meals. They change their lunch menu (each day features a different bento box) every week.
The waitresses are adorable and during dinner time they dress up in Japanese clothes and wear slippers. They are sweet and will remember you if you visit a lot. The service is fast if you arrive when they open.
I always order Agedashi Tofu and I ask them not to pour the sauce over it. I rather mix it in myself so the crispy tofu isn't drenched in liquid.
Their soft shell [crab] tempura is nice especially with squeezed lemon.
The dinner dishes (chicken teriyaki, chicken sukiyaki, etc.) all come with a bowl of miso soup, rice, and salad. They have their special dressing and if you like it a lot you can purchase it at the front of the restaurant and bring it home to make your own salad. Though some people find their dressing to be a bit sour, I like it a lot.
I strongly recommend the Agedashi Tofu.
Azuma is a good japanese restaurant. nothing to crazy here, just your traditional dishes, something for everyone. i must say that the service that we received was really welcoming. i would definitely comeback for the food. overall this place stands out a bit more than the many other japanese places in the south bay because well... its japanese owned and ran.
Azuma is a traditional Japanese restaurant. The portions are great and the service is awesome! The waitresses are dressed in kimonos and they are very polite to the customers.
Their miso soup has just the right amount of flavor, and they give you salad with their own special sauce if you order the dinner. Everything tastes great and all the food is fresh.

Aka: My Mom
- Physical Characteristics: Small, dainty, was once 5'4" but swears she is shrinking
- Reproduction: Produced 3 really cute and awesome offspring
- Social Structure: Does not rule with an iron fist but a loving heart. Tends to never yell but instead, give you a guilt trip that will make you feel like crap for the next 5 years of your life.
- Diet: Sometimes carnivore, sometimes herbivore, sometimes omnivore, cannot seem to make up her mind. Mostly eats vegetation, has been documented that she eats meat but not "too much", will eat fish on occasion but must be cooked, will eat sporadically throughout the day or rarely at all. Will turn down food if offered but will pick at leftovers.
- Known To Eat: 7-11 nachos with chili and extra jalapenos (a must). McDonalds breakfast but will abandon food suddenly. Chipotle salad if the moon is aligned correctly on leap year. Vietnamese food though this is debatable. Also, California Rolls with no tobiko, not too much mayo, real or imitation crab - doesn't matter - as long as she knows what it is before.
Azuma's california rolls saved me the grief of trying to find my mom dinner!! One order has 16 pieces! Isn't that insane?! I ordered 3, thinking each order was 6 pieces but the hostess was so polite and sweet, she explained to me how many each had. So when I picked up my order and saw that it only cost about $9 for 1 order (16 pieces), I WAS TRULY AMAZED!
I nonchalantly slid the food to My Mom. Surprised and curious, she slowly opened it, looked at it, inspecting the rolls so that they were to her liking. After more knit-picking with her chopsticks, My Mom finally took her first bite.
"Do you like it...?"

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I LOVE YOU AZUMA.
I can't believe how many stars this restaurant has gotten.
I was a frequent customer about 10 years back, but for some reason, I haven't eaten there for a very long time. I figured it was time to go back and revisit.
We were a party of two on a Friday night at 6:30PM for dinner.
We ordered: 1 teapot soup, 1 dinner special with grilled saba and sashimi. The teapot soup was fine, not horrible but not amazing either. The dinner special was horrible. The saba was not tasty, and the sashimi was cut into irregular shapes. I got a piece that was a triangular pyramid. . . . it looked more like it was meant for poke. And the fish didn't taste fresh. Also, the dinner special came in two plates, small tapas sized plates. It was about $15.
And the bill came. It wasn't worth it for the amount of food, not to mention the low quality.
Not going to return.
Used to go here a lot, but I don't get to Cupertino much anymore.
I always loved both the service and the food. Great sushi, delicious sashimi in generous portions, and a wonderful environment in which to eat and drink.
As I went there a lot, back in the 90s, the staff began to greet me familiarly, seating me in places I was known to prefer. Most charming.
I come here with my family very often and everyone really enjoys just being at Azuma (my mom especially enjoys the different types of ikebana). The setup of the store is very traditional and puts you in the mood for eating Japanese cuisine. The service is wonderful and very friendly. I usually come here for lunch, and they have different lunch combos every day. The portions are very large and you can tell their food is high quality. I highly recommend the agedashi tofu and their kitsune udon. However, I'm not usually daring enough to try anything new because it never tastes quite right (too sweet, too strong, etc.)...
I would give this restaurant 3 1/2 stars for overall experience.
Cons: We went when it got busy, so our server took too long to get to us. Prices high. Portions out of control: a chicken teriyaki dinner could feed two adults and one child; the starter salad was huge, too!
Pros: Totally perfect for families with young children because you can sit in a booth where the kids can move around and play without bothering other diners. The noise level from laughing adult groups in adjacent booths far surpassed voices of little ones. This place is a traditional family restaurant and knows it (doesn't pretend to be something else). Portions out of control: you can share a dinner or take leftovers home for another meal. Food was tasty, service was friendly. Booths were roomy and rather comfortable.
Azuma has been a standard family dinner restaurant for the fam for several years now and it generally doesn't fail to satisfy that Japanese food craving. The sashimi and sushi are pretty standard and not the freshest I've ever had so I usually end up exploring other parts of the menu (although you can never go wrong with a hamachi or salmon roll as a small appetizer!)
This past time we went we got the black cod kazuge (Sp?). Love it!! It's super buttery and the texture is amazing!! The portion is kind of small but all the better to show your parents what a considerate decent person you've become. "No, no, you go ahead and take the last piece!" The beef sukiyaki and mackeral combo is also very satisfying and the egg dish (starts with an O?) is a perfect end to the meal. We tried a side of Japanese mushrooms cooked in sake this time as well and it was a great side dish to all the meat and fish.
Azuma is good for regulars considering there are so many things on the menu to explore. The standard beef teriyaki and combo dinners are generally pretty satisfying but for a more interesting Japanese dining experience I would recommend you order off the beaten menu trail =)
I've been dining at Azuma for quite a few years. The consistency in quality has never dropped under my watch. The service is above average, and the pricing is about average. I'd recommend the cold cha soba (green tea soba noodles) with soba sauce. I like to have it over the warm summers since the soba cools you down =]
Their chawan mushi (steamed egg-tofu) is pretty good too. Kikko liver is another one that won't let you down. Also try the monterey squid/ika, agedashi tofu, and spinach oshitashi as appetizers.
The decor is nice, but the food quality was not good. Portions are medium.
The sashimi does not taste fresh. The salmon misoyaki was very overcooked and bland.
I'd not go back there since there are better quality Japanese restaurants in the area at the same price point.
ive faired so many japanese restaurants and neglected to review but somehow i feel obligated to write about my favorite japanese restaurant. Ive been coming here for a while and never had a bad dish. everything is delicious..the service of the classic obaasan/okaasan in yukata adds to the flair. start off with the miso..you cant go wrong..the miso is homemade using both white and red paste ...the best ive ever had..get the agedashi tofu and chirashi and you'll be in heaven..i love classic prep tamago so i always get that...im so tired of restaurants trying to add flair in japanese cuisine where simplicity gets accolades. well done Azuma... 5/5 Judochops!
Solid Japanese restaurant, big menu and lots of dinner combinations although on the pricier side. This restaurant strives for the more traditional feel to it, the servers wear kimonos and there's a bunch of tatami/shoe-less style booths. Good ambiance for sure if your looking for that particular experience. Service is also attentive and friendly.
Food is okay, the menu is huge so I haven't had the chance to eat everything but having ordered some hamachi nigiri, one of their teriyaki chicken combination dinner, as well as agedashi tofu and beef sukiyaki in the past, nothing quite stands out. Well besides the agedashi tofu, that was really good.
Not a place to get American style rolls, traditional Japanese restaurant is traditional.
I would have given them 4.5 stars, only because I'm iffy about the price -- not wallet-friendly for a poor college student like me =[ .
Despite the hefty cost, the atmosphere was great! You get to take off your shoes, relax in the booths and get served by nice old ladies in kimonos. We came for my friend's birthday and he got free ice cream (plus a very beautiful "happy birthday" rendition from an elderly waitress)!
Our group of 5 shared 4 appetizers and ordered our own combo plates.
We ordered Agedashi Tofu, 2 orders of Tempura Scallops, and Wakame Salad to start off. It was delicious. The tempura sauce was extremely light, in both flavor and coloring -- I'm used to using the dark sauce, but this one had a light honey/yellow hue.
Our combos included incredible miso soup and salad before our main dishes. (My friends were certain that the salad tasted like hot dog for some reason). I ordered Teriyaki Steak and Tempura, which came with a steaming bowl of sticky rice -- my favorite.
It came out to be around $25 a person including tax and tip. All in all, not too bad for what we got, but not a steal either. I highly recommend this place! I would definitely come back to celebrate special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries, but not every day because there are no deals.
I actually really like this place! Gives that feeling of real authentic Japanese food. A real good freind of mine brought me here for a birthday lunch surprise, picked me up from school and all (now that was out of the blue too!) and enjoyed some great quality Japanese food. The nigiri sushi is very fresh and the rice isn't too sticky or hard, which is always a plus in looking for good nigiri. We also ordered the katsu bento with sashimi on the side. Perfect pairing and portions with some hot green tea. YUM. Overall, I enjoyed my visit here and plan on coming back again.
Food: 5 stars
Service: 4 stars
Ambiance: 3 stars
Overall: 4.5 stars
This strip mall sushi place was surprisingly good and full of contradictions. We go in this place and the waitresses mostly look like old school japanese school marms, but then the sushi chefs behind the counter are all hispanic! One even had his bandana tied like LA chulo style... LOL
The menu is chock full of traditional japanese items that we have no idea what they mean. So we order our usual Chirashi and a Dinner Combination of Sashimi/Saba (mackerel). For kicks, we ordered something we've never had: the Combination Zohsui. Turns out it is like the Chinese Congee or Rice Porridge, but with seafood, chicken, napa vegetables. Very tasty.
The Chirashi was really great too, even though the fish cuts were a little thin for my liking. There was lots of little extras in the plate that made even the rice yummy to eat, like bits of marinated mushroom, roe, bonito, etc. My husband's saba was really tasty and the skin toasty. I'm sure his saashimi could have been more varied as it looked like a lot of just tuna and hamachi..
It was all very delicious and what I imagine what my mother would have made if she was born Japanese and not Korean.
My favorite wife was on her way home and said she had a hankerin for some udon for dinner. I did a Yelp search and found Azuma in the neighborhood which we had driven by but never stopped at.
We were greeted promptly and I was reassurred by the presence of authentic Japanese wait staff. We were quickly served hot tea and water and favorite wife ordered udon and I gyoza and rice as I had been eating raisin bran and shredded wheat all evening up to this point. The only negative was the seating is in close proximity to others so you will be able to catch up on happenings in others lives whether you want to or not.
I was very pleased with the experience as I was unsure due to the mixed reviews but will definately stop by and bring friends and family again.
I would actually give this place 4 stars if it weren't for the rest of my party not enjoying it at all. I had a great time. The best thing about it is probably the atmosphere.
I had the Teriyaki Chicken and it was great. I didn't try any sushi so can't vouch for that.
Two others in my group had the daily special and they both said it was luke warm as if it had been sitting, waiting for someone to order it.
The staff was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean. The prices were fair.
I would go back but it would probably be hard to convince others to do the same with me.....I'd be eating alone :(
I've heard great things about Azuma, and when I finally tried it... I didn't quite understand what the hype was about. However, the person I was with thought the sashimi was fresh. She said she's definitely come back to dine here. The prices were fair for the portions offered. As for the ambiance, it's your typical Japanese restaurant.
Excellent fare, the cost of dinner with a beer and a sake was around $45. My friend and I had steak/tempura and chicken/tempura. Only gripe was that the batter for the tempura wasn't as light or crispy as I would have liked. The ambience was clean, well-lit and pleasant, the facade of the restaurant was very nice. Plenty of parking (its in a strip mall). Next to Vallco. Big portions. Soup was hot. Didn't have the sushi since my dinner companion doesn't like it, but will go again another time to try w/someone else. Service was really good, waitress was dressed in a kimono and other staff in black jackets. Will go again for sure.
I came here for lunch today; I don't think I've been in this restaurant in about 15 years - so I was curious to see how they would be.
Back in the day, when Japanese restaurants were farther and fewer between in the South Bay, this place managed to stand out above the crowd (esp. with the tatami seating and all), however, they definitely no longer have the wow factor.
I would prob never come here again by choice unless it was someone else's "strong" suggestion to do so.
I knew that this was more of an older-style Japanese restaurant from the 80s and 90s, so I wasn't expecting the special rolls that are so popular now, however, I was still expecting a bit more than what the menu offered. It contained just the typical fare - donburi, udon, teriyaki, sashimi, and simple sushi.
There was a "daily lunch special" for $9.95, and today it was sashimi, shrimp and veggie tempura, and chicken teriyaki. I think that I confused the waitress (ESL) by saying that I didn't want the chicken teriyaki; she kept insisting that I couldn't do any 'special' orders. I understand that restaurants to that, so I just let it go. My perspective was that I knew that I wouldn't eat the teriyaki and that it would go to waste.
The time lapse from the time that the food was ordered to the time of delivery was actually pretty quick. My lunch caompadre ordered the salmon teriyaki and it was served on a bed of salad.
These days, $10 for lunch is OK. I don't prefer to spend any more than that - so the pricing was decent; though the lunch was pretty lackluster.
Miso Soup: tasted too miso-heavy but prob had the most tofu and seaweed that I have ever seen in miso soup elsewhere.
Steamed white rice: ya can't go wrong with that
Tempura: was good and tasted fresh, but the pieces were much smaller than what I've had elsewhere. Four green beans, two pieces of shrimp, and just a coupla other SMALL morsels.
Sashimi: it was ok, but only got like four or five small pieces.
I didn't touch the chicken teriyaki, though they only gave me about six bit-size pieces.
There was some weird "potato-salad-like-radish salad" concoction that I could not identify (sorry - I must be a rookie).
Service was extremely minimal. What I would've liked to have seen is some way that they could disinguish themselves from the rest - and that might be exceptional service, an upated interior, perhaps some more interesting or off-the-wall lunch specials, and maybe knocking a dollar off of the lunch price - cuz it definitely wasn't worth the money.
Even if they took some of the menu items off and concentrated more on "one or two" of their strengths (i.e. seafood, udon/donburi, special rolls/sushi, etc), the could prob do better. It just seemed too much like they were trying to do just a little bit of everything.
Friendly service, great atmosphere (ask to sit in Japanese seating) and consistently good food.
In addition, unlike some other Asian restaurants in the area, it doesn't matter what your ethnicity, they serve you the same quality of food.
I am a huge fan of the combo and I usually have sashimi (salmon only) and tempura. Always leave full and satisfied.
Overpriced!!
But they have the best Agedashi tofu in the bay area.
Their daily lunch special is pretty great though.
The chirashi is decent, but not worth 18 dollars or however much it is worth now.
The sukiyaki is pretty good, a little too sweet for me.
I also like the terriyaki scallops because you get to grill them yourself. It's fun!
They have a lot of rolls and typical cooked teriyaki dinners. If you're looking for raw fish, expect to find just the regular tuna, salmon, eel, etc. Don't go looking for fresh, seasonal, uncommon fish here.
If you have an average palette for sushi and enjoy paying average/low prices, then this place is perfect for you.
I came here the other day for lunch after more than one year of absence. The inside and the waitresses were pretty much the same. Since the lunch special had tempura, I decided to have katsudon. The size was pretty big which was appropriate for the price. The taste was alright for what it was. The rice turns out usually too watery for my preference when I order this specific dish, but this place's isn't the case. The flavor on the other hand was a little sweeter side (as was miso soup), but alright. I'll come back again.

I had an opportunity to go to this restaurant for lunch today. Their interior is what I would… Read more »
A friend took me here on Wed. night for dinner, overall impression, 4 stars.
- deco -spacious, not too crowded, both table and tatami seating arrangements.
- food: avg+, we ordered
- Salmon Chazuke $~7-8 -- pretty good, the soup is a bit blend, but I like to mix in some wasabi
- Hamachi rolls (8 pieces) ~$6 -- both sets of rolls are avg size but pretty good, fish is fresh
- spicy CA rolls (8 pieces) ~$6
- sashimi/broiled saba bento ~$16-18 - sashimi is 6 pieces of tuna, nothing to interesting, but the Saba is excellent!
-- I also like their version of the miso soup, richer than avg.
~~ This is a will come back to choice.
Lunch time in Cupertino. My three yelp girls and I wanted Japanese this time; thus we hurried over to Azuma with growling stomachs.
First of all, the ambiance. They did a beautiful job with the wooden decor and the overall table/booth arrangement. Each booth is roomy, private and comfortable. Definitely try to get one when you're there - but don't be wearing old socks with holes as you'll be taking off your shoes. With the dim lighting, it'd make a decent date spot.
Secondly, the service. It was impeccable thanks to our waitress who was the most thoughtful and accommodating person EVER.
Lastly, the food. Sorry, this part of the review is solely based on the miso soup and the chirashi special I had. Miso soup was a little salty, more like the Korean version of it. As for the chirashi, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality. It had a variety of sashimi (see photo) and other add-ons like flavored shiitake, edamame, sakura denbu, etc. I would certainly order this again next time. Btw, they offer two kinds of chirashi - one without the raw fish (Kyoto-style) and one with the fish. Though the latter is pricier, it's worth it...unless you're a vegetarian.
The other girls had the lunch bento special with a couple of nigiris (salmon and hamachi). The lunch menu changes daily, and on this particular day (Friday) it came with tempura and teriyaki. I heard no complaints; they all seemed to be enjoying their food. Or quite possibly, we were too caught up with chatting?? YES, sometimes food can be secondary in light of the gossips. :P
In sum, although this place isn't wholly authentic, I'm quite fond of it -- especially given its aesthetic, soothing atmosphere that deserves a star on its own.
Five stars for traditional sushi. You will not get the "rainbow roll" here or any of the new rolls. The fish is fresh and yummy.
My boyfriend "hated" sushi until I took him here. He's still not very adventurous, but I order all over the menu. HE LOVE'S IT and now we go all the time.
We eat like royalty here for $25. Their hamachi-kama (sp?) (fish jowls) is the best EVER. I've gotten seasonal toro here (at regular market prices...read: pricey) and it was yummy. Their other dishes are great. I find that their Agedashi tofu is de-lic-ious...but be warned, it's a very generous portion. It's like a side dish for four people (boyfriend liked it even). Their seaweed salad is great and their nato is the best I've ever had. Wonderful green tea ice cream with red bean (it's worth the extra buck).
My friend who's Japanese was very impressed. Service is good, decor is nice (beautiful flower sculptures), waitresses are really nice, tea is very very yummy. Service is consistently great. They remember you here too!
It's right my Joann's and a little Asian market (checks and cash only) so it's a convenient stop as well.
Yum yum - SUSHI!
PS Boyfriend is pipping up with "I'd go there all the time if I could"
Oh - one thing I forgot...the maki (rolls) are priced on the menu as 8 pieces (aka: half-a-roll). So if you want 6 pieces say 1/2 a roll, if you want 16 pieces, say a full roll - or ask your waitress. Pieces are traditional sizes (small-ish), not the size of a hockey puck (I'm exaggerating I know...but you get my meaning).
Bonus for being right next door to L'epi D'or...makes it easy to mosey over after some fabulously fresh sushi and get a cream puff that's much tastier than Beard Papa's.
And YES this place does excel at fab fresh sushi...I haven't had such yummy fresh tuna in a long time. Their service was spot on fast...even though I was apprehensive reading slow-service reviews. Super friendly too.
Love the old-fashioned take-off-your-shoes booths. Inside it's much more spacious than it appears and the ambiance is relaxing and comfy though don't lean back on the booth walls, cuz they ain't really walls and you'll practically topple into your neighbor's booth. Oopsie.
We'd been eyeballing this place for a while, figured it was a good place to have a wonderful lunch with my team gals. We shall definitely return.
I walked in to this Japenese place and noticed the Japanese decor right away. It is nice and dark and relaxing inside. We sat in a booth where you have to take off your shoes which was nice and spacious but private since you don't see your neighbors. and can lean back but no one behind you.
Right away the nice waitress came over and brought us some yummy green tea. She was really fast and friendly bringing our food out. I got the special for the day of: Chicken teriyaki, tempura, rice, tofu, orange, noodle salad and soup. Everything tasted really fresh and good! Price was reasonable for all the food you got fro 9.75! One of the gals got some sushi we tried and it tasted very fresh and good! Three very large pieces.
Overall a good lunch for the money, quantity and price!
The bentos here are pretty solid. The fish is a little below average; it's not horrible but definitely not great. The location's not bad either so there was a year or two where my friends and I came here quite regularly.
The dealbreaker though is the deceptive pricing. Be VERY careful when ordering rolls a la carte. While eating our rolls, we were actually fairly happy... they didn't taste incredible but they were very generous in terms of quantity and we found you could easily share a sushi order between two people.
The drama began after getting the bill. Apparently, if you say you want 1 roll, you really meant that you want 2 rolls. If you say 3 rolls, it really meant you want 6 rolls. Yup, they double every order... what?! When we complained, the waitress said, "Oh, it says on the menu that orders are doubled." We asked her to show us where on the menu it said that since that seems like a detail we'd remember. She couldn't find it on there so she found the manager who said, "Oh, we reprinted the menus and forgot to include that." What?! Of course they didn't waive that portion of the bill ("you ate it..."). We vowed never to return... and we never have.
Their Soups are fantastic. They have a good variety of different types of soups and even their simple miso soup has a rich taste, much better than most Japanese place.
Their Sushi on the other hand is so so. The fish pieces are small and sometimes not the freshest. Their rolls are above average.
One big drawback is the wait time. The place is pretty small and sometimes they have a hard time managing large crowds.
Great food overall. Typical Japanese restaurant which tries to be more authentic inside. Salad and soup is a bit better than your avg place. Good panko salmon, agedashi tofu, chicken terryaki, sashimi. Tempura wasn't too bad either. I'd go to Ocean Blue for the rolls and come to Azuma for the basics. Can't go wrong with either option. Azuma is also a better place to take a date.
This place is one of my stand-bys for the sushi/sashimi craving I get every few weeks or so.
The place is pretty nicely decorated. It's not huge and you sit quite near neighboring tables unless you go for the japanese-style seating (shoes must be removed for this so you better not be wearing that one set of hole-ridden socks that you refuse to get rid of). ;)
The fish is cut well and fresh. Tuna rolls, salmon rolls and shrimp tempura rolls are my top choices which I also commonly order to go.
we had a hankering for some japanese food on a sunday night, but our favorites are closed on sundays. we found azuma and figured we'd try it out after not going for a few years.
the meal was spotty. we really loved the yaki onigiri, beef sukiyaki, veggie tempura, chirashi sushi (regular, not kyoto style) and salmon chazuke. sushi was average and so were the teriyaki dishes. i would definitely recommend to get the more traditional items. to try next time: nabe and soba.
The sushi is garbage here. Most of the dishes are Americanized and teriyaki flavor galore.
The decor inside the restaurant is quite nice, it's definitely above par compared to other Japanese places. Our waitress told us that this restaurant is owned by Japanese people, even though there's quite a few Koreans here.
I came during lunch and the bento boxes were reasonable price - $8.50 - $9.50 range. The presentation was nicer than normal places, with very tapas like portions, but nonetheless, it filled me up.
I liked the presentation of the food, and the Japanese style tables where you get to take off your shoes.
One perk, they accept Discover! woohoo~
This is my all-time favorite restaurant. It holds a lot of childhood memories with it, which is partly why I enjoy it so much. The other reason is for the cooked food here. I am a sushi snob, and am apathetic about the sushi at Azuma's. It's fine, nothing special, and consistent.
The food though, is without a doubt, the best Japanese food I've ever had. It's quite salty, but I've developed a decent addiction to it, so I can't get enough. The agedashi tofu is the best of any place I've ever tried it. The miso soup is something that I find myself craving when I haven't had it recently. The menu is extensive, and offers many many things I've still yet to try.
Don't get the homemade marinated squid unless you know what it is, and you know you like it.
I can't say enough good stuff about this restaurant, and plan my trips to northern CA around when I can go eat there.
