Azul Tequila had "heat" once .... And I mean the kind of heat later afforded a string of South Austin darlings (not quite the heat of a Torchy's or a Gordoughs, but a solid buzz nonetheless). People just couldn't believe that such a fantastic interior Mexican joint was in this ugly strip mall on the frontage road.

And the food was good, for sure. I had a few meals there a few years back, when the place opened, and was always impressed.

I'm not sure why I stopped going. I guess it was because there are too many other dining options here in town. Azul Tequila became the place around the corner that I took for granted.

I popped back in the other day for happy hour. Everything was really good, though there's nothing to get excited about as far as the happy hour drink prices go--the best deal is a $6 blue margarita that, like most margaritas, has too much sugar and not enough alcohol. Not sure what the regular price is for this pre-mixed kids' stuff, but you'd be better off sticking to their small beer selection (or hitting up the Twin Liquors next door on your way out the door).

Happy hour includes a small selection of $4 food items. Things like queso. I got the only two things that looked interesting--ceviche and camarones tequila. They just happen to be the only two happy hour food items with little asterisks by them on the menu, denoting that they cost $6 instead of $4. Oh well. They were good, and definitely worth it, though they were nearly identical, so I should have just gotten one or the other. Also, they came in tall sherbet glasses, making sharing with my friends awkward, if not impossible.

So go for a dinner with someone you're not trying to impress with ambiance and service (or clean menus, for that matter) and you'll probably appreciate the fact that Azul Tequila is one of the few places in town where you can actually get Mexican food that stands out from the other 11,381 places in town serving "Tex-Mex" fare.

After visiting Azul Tequila for the bazillionth time tonight, it's time to write a review.
We didn't really want to try it, because it's in a shopping center. I still have my I'm-not-from-here-so-why-would-I-go-to-a-place-in- a-shopping-center attitude sometimes. But HOLY CRAP. Azul Tequila is the best Mexican and TexMex in town. Usually when I go out, I order the same thing over and over, because I know I like it, but not here. Basically I always tell my server what I'm in the mood for (beef, spicy, shrimp, avocado, whatever) and he orders for me. I have never- EVER- had anything that was less than excellent here.
And tonight-- I "lost" my phone. I drove all the way back to get it, and they pulled out the table, pulled the cushions off the booth benches, even let me call my phone to see if we could find it. Apparently it had fallen out of my purse in the backseat of my car.... but the point is, they went above & beyond for me when they didn't have to.
And they're super duper nice. And have I mentioned that the food is DELICIOUS? ;)

Azul Tequila is quickly becoming one of my favorite Mexican joints in Austin. I never thought I'd like a shopping center restaurant as much as I love this place.

I almost always start with one of their signature margaritas. If in season, the Prickly Pear Margarita is my top choice, but my runner up is the Avocado Margarita.

My favorite dish at Azul Tequila is Dallas' Pechuga - a grilled chicken breast covered with bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, onions and Monterey jack cheese. It reminds me of the Pollo Monterey at Maudie's but better. The dish left me satisfied but not feeling like crap.

Azul Tequila stands out among its Austin Mexican restaurant peers. Definitely give it a try.

There was quite an impressive menu-but when I really searched-I could find only one main course that was vegetarian-only the veggie enchiladas. Was it good? Yes. Yes it was. It wasn't great, and possibly a little overpriced. But it was the only option. Other than that, the chips and salsa were pretty good. I didn't stop to try the margarita, and I doubt I'll come back to try it. I've already had their whole veggie menu with one visit and I don't think it really merits a repeat performance.

I hadn't been there in a while, and we were thinking of someplace outside our area, so went there last week. It was better even than I remembered. Terrific, fresh, real Mexican food. The margaritas are not the best, but the food is 5 stars.

Suprising not terrible. Generally don't eat at restaurants with liquor in the name but we were tired. Food was actually quite nice. Better then a cheapo, much better then some horrible chain but not as good as a high end place.
Margaritas were, well as you might expect, but the staff was very nice and there was a nice Latino band playing.

OMG the food here is ah-ma-zing.

I feel guilty that Azul is not far from where I live yet for whatever reason I have never been up until now.  You wouldn't really notice this place to begin with as it is part of a very crowded strip shopping center next to a Target.

I had the Pincho de Camarones which is a skewer filled with grilled shrimp and smothered in a spicy tomato like sauce served with rice and beans.

My table also split their very massive bowl of tortilla soup.  It is the best tortilla soup I have had in Austin.  Another friend had their cactus dish that was yummy.

The cool part about Azul is that they serve both traditional interior Mexican and Tex Mex.  You have many delicious options.  The prices are awesome for the amount of food you are getting.

They serve birthday shots where the waitstaff comes out and cheers and sings a birthday song.  It doesn't have to be your birthday.  :-)

Their flan is also to die for.  It is a richer flan than most.

This place will probably become a regular spot for me when wanting Mexican food.

Busy monday night. it looks like a cool place for happy hour?
Tried the El paso rib eye, it wasnt anything exceptional...just simply grilled meat...though it seemed fried on a pan.
Pescado al mojo de ajo - was very nice and moist fish...with delicious cilantro sauce to go with it. nothing else on the plate matter at that point, but fish was good.
Cabrito al Maguey- a bit sweet, a bit enjoyable. goat/barbacoa meat? seemed like any pulled pork plate.

complimentary chips and salsa were very crisp and good flavor salsa.

    Im split on my review....

So, I ha been to the place one time 4 or 5 years back, and I thought the food was not good at all. But, after seeing 4 stars here and reading reviews I decided to give it a shot again.

We went Sunday for lunch around 2, the place was pretty dead besides us and a few tables.

The Chips and Salsa- 4 stars, very good, chips tasted fresh and salsa was done right

I ordered the chicken enchilada and tortilla soup. I will start with the enchilada plate.
The chicken had an odd flavor, couldn't put my finger on it, but it tasted off. Very bland.

The rice, undercooked or reheated and dried out, was not the most horrible, but far
    far from the best around.

Beans, refried is kinda hard to mess up, these were mediocre

Overall I would give this plate a 1 1/2, wasn't very good. Honestly have had better and chain restaurants.

The brightest note of lunch was the Tortilla soup. It had great flavors and the chicken was very tasty in it. The only thing that hurt it was the stale chips in it. What could have been a 4 star soup turned into a 3 b/c of that. But, overall I would order it again.

With sub par food I am thinking this place is more so a drinking spot then eating, do tend to see that with some Mexican restaurants. But I will most likely not being going back as both times I have been here the food was not great.

My hands-down favorite Mexican food in Austin. We drive from Georgetown at least once a month to visit. We've tried to be regulars for about six years and I've never had anything less than delicious. I want to give it four stars, just becuase it's a little pricy, but I just can't because it is so good.

Favorite Drink: Avocado Margarita, sounds weird, but trust me on this.

    Top food recommendations:
-Pescado Empapelado- Spicy, very spicy, wrapped fish fillet. Covered with chipotle sauce. I like that it includes an avocado salad.

-Any of the Pechuga plates- their grilled chicken breasts are all very tender. They have three different versions with different veggie/cheese toppings. All are great

-Cowgirl Skirt- Husband's favorite. It's a skirt steak and apparently it's great- he never shares this!

-All American Fajitas- could be called 'kitchen sink fajitas'. They're a little expensive but sooo good. Off the top of my head they have chicken, beef, shrimp, tomatoes, squash, zucchini, peppers, onions, and maybe eggplant.

They also have great live music on the weekends.

Hola!  This place is the primary reason I want to learn to speak Spanish.  The staff are native speakers and by that I mean some of the staff has a very strong accent and I really have to use my listening skills and look them in the eye. I am not in the habit of paying serious attention to English speakers because I suffer from adult attention hyperactivity disorder and I am unmedicated.

I stabilize my condition via margarita drinking and I re-discovered yesterday that the bartender at Azul makes a great agave/fresh lime margarita.  I did not eat anything since Azul was the first stop of our South Lamar Margarita Tour.  It is worth mentioning that Azul has delicious salsa and as I have said before a Mexican restaurant is not worth anything if the salsa is awful and not freshly prepared.

My next visit to Azul will to partake in the food.  I am not a first or last time visitor, but it has been awhile since I have been to this little jewel in a strip mall.

If you have two hours to kill on mediocre food and drinks then this is your place.  Two of us had flautas and they were decent, the ranchero sauce was quite tasty. We asked for queso, it was good until I scooped out a huge piece of burnt cheese.  My boyfriend had the quesadillas and he said they were good. Our other friend had the ribeye. It looked good but he said it was way to spicy and he's a brown dude!!

And then there's the service or better said, the lack thereof. Besides us four there were two other couples, they were not swamped by any means. We had to ask for chips and salsa refills. They forgot my friends drink, brought my boyfriend a frozen rita when he asked for on the rocks. The refilled the Sprite with water THREE times!  The Lola Grande was good according to my friend but $9 a piece for a little glass is a bit excessive.  Lastly, I had to ask for new silverware because it had dried food on it.

The only reason the meal was memorable was because of the company.

Azul used to be a solid 5-stars every time I went there. However, It has become a hit or miss place in the past year.

I noticed that they have a lot of new service staff this year, and most of these newbies are inattentive and unfriendly. Bad services could be tolerated if their food had not also taken a turn for the worst - I guess they have new staff in the kitchen too.

At first I thought we had just caught them on an "off day", but on the third "strike" I realized that Azul was not what they used to be.

Maybe they changed ownership or some of their high-level staff members left?!?

After our last meal there, which offered terrible service and WORSE food, I doubt we will ever go back....unless I hear of great improvements from other Yelpers.

Our first visit here in more than a year.  The salsa passed our test, but what really made me happy was my entree order:  Chile Relleno en Almendra, Poblano pepper stuffed with sautéed picadillo blended with almonds, raisins, tomatoes and onions, topped with almond cream sauce, served with white
rice and salad. At first, I thought the dish was going to be too sweet... but after a bite or two, ah!  what a perfect blend of flavors!  So very good!  It's opulently rich and delicious.  Boyfriend ordered Enchiladas Alamo and complained there wasn't enough meat in the sauce (this is not an unusual comment -- we should always order extra sauce or extra meat in the sauce).  Our visiting friend, a pork lover,  ordered the Puerco Mestizo, Pork meat sautéed with chile ancho sauce
or tomatillo sauce, topped with onions, served with Mexican rice and beans. He ordered the tomatillo version, and it was too spicy for him (he's a NY native).  I tasted it and did NOT like it -- almost gamey, with a strong pork taste.  Our other friend enjoyed the tortilla soup.

So... I'd recommend trying Azul Tequila, especially if the sound of the Relleno en Almendra appeals to you.  I've never ordered the blue margaritas (I try to avoid as much dye in my system as possible), but they certainly seem to be popular.

Went here for lunch on a Sunday and I was very impressed. I started off with notable blue margarita (there's a little bit of magic in those things) and ordered some cilantro fish that blew me away. They divide their menu into a Tex-Mex section and a more traditional "Interior" Mexican section so you can venture into more experimental dishes or stick with the local trite-and-true favorites. It was the first time I ever left a Mexican restaurant without that weighed-down, heavy feeling.

    Truly an Austin gem!

I always base my mexican food likes or dislikes on the first sampling of food that comes to the table...chips and salsa.

It was love at first bite. Fresh, home made chips with this incredible salsa with just enough spice to really give it some "pizzazz!".

I had the chili relleno stuffed with raisins and some other interesting tid bits covered in a almond cream sauce...DIVINE!! I almost wanted to lick my plate.

If you want the ultimate effect of liqour,go for the blue ritas...they will put a hurtin' on ya"....

I'm kind of a snob. Not in a totally judgmental, "I'm better than you" kind of way but in the way that I've lived long enough to figure out what I like and don't in life.

    Mostly.

That said, I tend to avoid eating at restaurants lodged between a Target and a Dollar Store. Or in any strip mall for the most part. But damn if that policy hasn't been standing between me and the BEST CARNITAS I'VE EVER HAD. And the guacamole side/app was really fresh, tasty and only 2 bucks.

Service was good. Atmosphere was OK. I'm holding back one star because I'm a snob. I mean, it IS in a strip mall between a Target and a Dollar Store.

But don't let that stop you. I'm sorry I did.

So we walk in and ask to be seated in a booth in the corner and our mildly retarded hostess asks us: well, would you mind sitting over here instead (pointing to where everyone is seated). No, that's why I asked for the booth. Ugh. Not so good start, but everything else after was perfect.

We were seated in our booth and were greeted by a friendly server. We decided to order the $6 "Loco deal" (blue margarita on the rocks, definitely strong enough to satisfy, and in a huge 16oz glass that looks like a fishbowl). During happy hour they offer $4 appetizers, but be careful because I didn't notice the little star by the shrimp cocktail, but it was actually $6.

We ordered off the regular menu (the chille relleno with chicken & chipotle sauce). This was great, I really loved the flavor, but I must say the portion of chicken inside the pepper was meager. I think I'd order something else next time.

Overall, I like the salsa, the chips, the food, and the service, minus the hostess who clearly doesn't get seating preference.

This restaurant needs a good manager.

I've been eating at Azul Tequila for about 5 years.   When it first opened, it was the first interior restaurant in the area.  And because it was not well known and in an out-of-way location, it was not very busy.

The thing that made (and still makes) Azul Tequila unique is that it features some unusual Mexican (note: Mexican, not Tex-Mex) dishes.  The dishes rely upon sauces for flavor.  They do have some Tex-Mex items on the menu but it's really the interior dishes that distinguish Azul Tequila from the other Mexican restaurants in far South Austin.

My favorite dish is the Enchiladas de Pipian which is an enchilada with tomatillo pipian sauce that has spices and ground pumpkin seeds.  My partner usually gets the Enchiladas de Mole which has a well-balanced sweet-spicy mole sauce.

I've had some of the other interior dishes and they have been very unique and flavorful.

The desserts are good- they have a nice flan and great sopapillas.  I'm not much of a drinker, but I do see lots of large groups there having margaritas.

When they opened, the restaurant had good service, good food and was not crowded.  As time has gone on, the service has suffered, the menus have gotten dirty and tattered, the restaurant has become more popular with families and the food is not as consistent as it once was.

I recently ate there with a waiter that appeared to be new, didn't know the menu well, didn't refill our drinks until asked, brought out stale chips and then didn't refresh the chips or salsa.  The food was very spicy and unbalanced (which has not been the case until recently).

To add injury to insult, at the next table, there was a family with a squealing, standing-and-jumping-on-the-seats 2 year old that they seemed oblivious to.  There's a reptile store next door to the restaurant and I found myself fantasizing that the child would wonder next door and be eaten by a kimodo dragon or swallowed whole by a hungry python.

I don't know what it is with restaurants in Austin.  So often, they start out great with lots of energy and verge but the owners seem to lose interest in maintaining quality.  And a good restaurant manager makes all the difference when it comes to consistency and dependability.  It's a shame when a really great, unique restaurant begins to get lazy and sloppy with things like new clean menus and food that can be relied upon to be tasty and interesting.

On the positive side, the restaurant is next to Target on Ben White (and conveniently located next to Herpeton in case you want to rid yourself of an ill-behaved child).  There's plenty of parking.  It's a large restaurant.  There's plenty of tables for large groups and parties.  They have a full bar and a drink menu.  The food is interior mexican instead of the usual Tex-Mex.

This is my favorite Mexican food in Austin! I don't eat Tex Mex, but they have that, too. Their interior Mexican food is phenomenal. I recommend the enchiladas pipian, the mole pipian, or the chiles rellenos. They're all spectacular. The decor is better than it was a couple of years ago, but you're not going for the ambiance, you're going for the food. Also one of the few places in town that has sopaipillas.

Okay, I'll be honest to start by saying I have rarely been here during regular hours. Almost every single time I have gone it has been during their happy hour, which is one of the best deals I have found in South Austin. The food is regularly a little bit pricey, but we make the trip often between 5-7pm.

They have a large blue margarita called the "Heavy Blue" which is only $6 during happy hour. It definitely is a "Loco Deal" as the menu describes, being that is sold for half price and contains a very generous amount of tequila. I would highly recommend delving into one of their exotic margaritas as well, such as the Avocado flavored one. It surpassed my expectations of what the Godly fruit and alcohol would taste like together, which is not too sweet with a creamy consistency. They also offer amazing appetizer specials with the purchase of alcoholic drinks. My favorite is the $4 Queso Flameado, which is not for those who are timid of a melted cheese overload. The $6 Camarón Tequilero tastes very authentic and is another great deal, as I have found many other restaurants overpricing their shrimp cocktails. Their chips and salsa are always something to look forward to, but was a huge miss upon our last visit. Something in the mix just didn't taste right.

The Platos del Interior dishes are respectful to the distinct flavors of central and southern Mexico, adding ingredients such as almonds, raisins, and banana leaves. My boyfriend really enjoyed the Cabrito al Maguey which I was fearful for him to try at first as it is very easy to not succeed with cooking goat meat. I would not recommend ordering off their Tex-Mex menu after being disappointed with some of the uninspiring dishes I have tasted. My hopes were dismissed after presumptions that their entire menu would live up to the restaurant's authentic fame. Their cheese enchiladas in particular were not impressive, but I am going to predict that this is the type of food they expect others to enjoy when ordering "good ole' tex mex ya'll!". If you are going to come here for dinner, stick with the authentic. It is worth the price for the quality.

The service is average. We have had excellent attentive servers, as well as the complete opposite. However, we have yet to have any problems or complaints with messed up orders and price discrepancies.

See you at happy hour! I'll be the one with the $6 Heavy Blue.

One of the best Tex-Mex meals I've eaten in a long time.  I went for lunch and opted for two chicken burritos with chipotle.  It was delicious, and the sauce was a perfect amount of spice.  Maybe I've become used to food that is almost bland, but all through the meal I was thinking how good it was.  I'll go back.  And lunch is amazingly inexpensive.

This place has a surprisingly intricate menu, with many options and some very interesting and tasty choices.  They have several varieties of mole and a pretty decent ceviche appetizer which has both shrimp and white fish.

The heavy blue margarita is just that, very heavy on the tequila but balanced by the rest of the concoction so you get pretty tipsy without knowing what hit you. (oh, and it's also a behemoth)

The service was decent and fairly quick as our entrees arrived very shortly after we started digging into our app. Overall tasty and interesting.

I've been coming to Azul Tequila for lunch for years.  And for years I've been taking it for granted.  The place has always been very good to me, but in the hustle and bustle of the workday, it's hard to remember to properly appreciate an establishment such as Azul Tequila.

Tonight (Friday)  I took my from-out-of-state parents to Azul Tequila for the chance to have some real Mexican food (not Tex-Mex, though I have nothing against Tex-Mex).  We walked out very impressed.

First off, when we walked in the door at about 8:30 a Mariachi band was playing.  Immediate plus!  This band wasn't some crap outfit playing at a blue margarita place.  These guys were genuinely good.

Okay, so the food.  This is why people do or do not come here.  I had the Pescado Yucateco.  This was delicious.  The chipotle sauce paired wonderfully with the fish and the plantain.  This is a 100% recommendation for anyone looking for fish in Mexican cuisine.

My father had the Cabrito al Maguey.  I had small bit of it.  It was my first experience with goat, but I thought the dish was expertly seasoned.  He enjoyed it thoroughly.

My  mother had the Mole Poblano.  I don't like Mole, so I didn't try this, but she liked it a lot.

Overall, for this night and for many lunches before, I give Azul Tequila high marks.

Definitely one of the better Mexican food restaurants in Austin.

It's a little strange since it sits in a strip center, next to a Target and a Dollar Store. But, please do not let that fool you. Cause, this place is great.

The menu is much more interior Mexican than it is Tex-Mex, so it is a nice change if you are used to the generic food of Santa Rita or the like.

Some killer options I have had recently are the Cochinita Pibil, Cabrito al Maguey, and my absolute favorite the Tex-Mex El Paso Rib Eye.

    Margaritas aint to shabby either.

    No Hipsters.

Okay let's start with the Avocado Margarita..creamy, thick, refreshing, delicious, and stout- with a hint of cilantro....$5.25 is a bit pricey for happy hour but its worth it.
If you are from California or some other non local place.... the shopping center may fool your yuppy needs, but its legit.

Pescado Veracruzano......good portion, sweet tomato based sauce wih a dash of spice, onion drenched over a perfectly cooked white fish (not even sure) fried plantains underneath....Yes Please!

The Cabrito de Maraguey was goat barbacoa obviously cooked all day to perfection...it was the most tender I have had to date and I am a goat man, Perhaps a bit gamey but thats why i like goat...the fat was evenly ribboned in the meat and it came with some beans that were pretty wet.

Service was efficient and attentive without being overbearing.

Don't really even want to write such accolades, since I want to get a table right away when I decide to dine...but you can't deny real quality traditional  Mexican cuisine. They have Tex-Mex food too but I'm sticking to this done well interior cuisine.

Not that expensive considering the quality and love that goes into the food.

Not the best ambience in the world, but the food is great and it's one of the few places you can get a great variety of interior food representing a few different regions of Mexico. There are some really good fish dishes and good margaritas as well.

Service here has never been spectacular for me, but never bad either.

Excellent all around, my favorite Mexican, not tex-mex, place in Austin so far.  Chips and salsa were really good.  I got the cabrito and it was excellent.  My gf got the mole and it was even better.  Service was so much better than what I've seen reviewed here, so maybe they are listening to the complaints.  Drinks were good if a little expensive.

Only complaint was the hostess had stankface when I asked her to reseat us closer to the live music (which was also really good on saturday night).  But I'm not going to knock a point off for one weird look.

Paid $50 for a couple of drinks and great dinner for the both us.  Will def be going back soon.

Everything I've had here has always been great. This is the only place I eat Mexican food in Austin, unless I'm craving tacos then I'll go to Papalote. My favorite dishes are the mole, and anything with tinga.  ;) This is also where I come to get my sopes fix.  ;) The margaritas are kickin.  Personally I don't care for the blue rita, but I know a lot of people who are in love with them. Excellent tequila selection. Hi Sergio!

This is one of the better central/interior style places that Ive been at here in Austin.

    Drinks:
Get the Big Blue on happy hour special - they do limit it to two (as they should) - it is by far one of the best drinks on the menu.   Another good one that Amber always gets is the Prickly Pear margarita - it is very tasty.

    Appetizers:
Their queso is one of the better ones in Austin.   During happy hour its about 4 bucks or so.  The chips are your standard fare - perhaps a little bit on the greasy side, but such is life.

    Food:
Ive had a number of things off the menu.... their fish fajitas are quite tasty and down right huge.   The Carnitas de Puerco is quite tasty - the sauce is a bit on the rough/spicy side - good thing they put it in a bowl on teh side.   Dont make the mistake of pouring it - you'll be sorry.   The waitress last time we were there alerted me to try the Chile Relleno en Crema - of which it is my current favorite  dish there.   The Chile Rellano is the best one Ive had in the city thus far.

Price was about what you would expect... drinks become expensive after happy hour; food is on par with many other interior places 10-14 bucks a plate.

The only suggestion I would have is to move into a stand alone place with a larger deck outside... the strip mall next to Target is a pretty crap location.   I think this place would do _huge_ business with a nice outdoor space with plenty of spots to hang out and drink their fantastic margaritas.

Azul Tequila has been one of my favorite restaurants since it opened many years ago.  They catered our wedding last weekend and couldn't possibly have done a better job.  They were punctual, looked great, and got right down to business.  We had blue margaritas and everyone LOVED them.  The food was awesome and we got tons of compliments on how great everything tasted.  The staff was unbelievable and took care of everything (even when we ran out of margaritas!, they had another batch to us within 10 minutes) and cleaned up beautifully.  The owner, Sergio, acted almost as if he was our wedding coordinator, which helped us a ton.  He stuck to his schedule he set with us and helped us stick to ours as well so that things ran smoothly.  He also worked with our budget and met our needs in that respect, which we greatly appreciated.  We couldn't have asked for a better catering service and plan to use them again any chance we get in the future.  Plus, we'll still be regulars at their restaurant.  THANK YOU AZUL TEQUILA, for making our special day so perfect!!!

My boyfriend finally convinced me to stop being superficial and try this place out; I can't thank him enough. I recommend this place to everyone and have throughly enjoyed myself every, single, time.

Sat around and waited while the 2 neighboring tables were seated and waited on and had drinks brought to their table. One waitress came to our table for our drink order but was shooed away by the hostess and we were told we had another server. Left after waiting for 15 minutes for the other server. Really disappointed with the service.

Great food especially the mole poblano, mole enchalades.  Waitstaff is ok, they don't check on their tables very often.   My complaint would be the mariachi that play on Friday night. They are good but for a small restaurant they over power the place.  Makes me not want to eat there on weekends.  Again, food is great.

    Round Rock, TX

-Disclaimer- Years ago when we were children,  I knew an awesome DSL technician. A righteous dude that you could trust, he chased his dream - Azul or bust!

I knew the founder when Azul was started (circa 2000?). We've lost touch since they closed the Round Rock location - but I owe him a visit.

They have some traditional Tex-Mex offerings and the salsa is downright tasty. For us, the service was always good at both locations. Check the bar as they have some nifty personalized shot glasses (super thick blue glass) and plenty of Tequila choices.

My wife liked to stay firmly anchored at the border (Tex-Mex) while I vicariously roamed all of Mexico sampling a  variety of unique and freakishly tasty dishes.

I favored the spiced pork on banana leaves (Conchinita Pibil?) which was served with pickled vegetables that were unique and habit-forming.  Have I mentioned that I am still pissed that the Round Rock location closed?

Is it just me or does the mere mention of Conchinita Pibil make anyone else see Johnny Depp with his eyes poked out? [http://www.imdb.com/ti...    and [http://www.allmoviepho...
    Crazy brain...

I love the atmosphere as Azul Tequila reeks of a place that stands defiantly on the quality of its food. It's low key like a cajun shack on the side of a country ditch with 50 cars parked outside and a line of "suits" waiting in the hot sun for their shot at a table.  But hey,  that's just the way I like my rolls.

Vaya y coma como un dios.

It's becoming apparent that the Conchita Pibil is more or less becoming my go-to meal at Mexican restaurants, and I'm reminded of how fortunate that is.  I sampled the same at Azul Tequila tonight, where I've been meaning to stop in in lieu of some timely and enticing reviews.

I could see how it might not be for everyone:  true, Azul Tequila's located in a strip mall off of the highway and next door to an exotic pet store and Target, and if you head in expecting to be pampered (who gets pampered in a strip mall?), you may come away non-plussed.  But we had a great time here tonight, with hearty dishes, excellent service, and an amenable by way of accessible ambiance.

After eating out in some other cities known specifically for their foodie-ness, I'm always pleasantly reminded at just how good we tend to have it in Austin, where unearthing an affordable and friendly gem doesn't have to cost you something akin to someone's mortgage.

My first trip in, but definitely not my last.  Ole!
