Wow, this is such a lot of food!!!  You won't go away hungry here. Take home 3/4 of the meal for leftovers the next day.

Not many vegie choices, though they custom-made my burrito with out hassle.

I live in San Diego, CA and have experience in some really good Mexican restaurants. So I ask: Should there be a Mexican restaurant so far away from Mexico? Is it authentic if it is closer to Canada than Mexico?

These are two questions I had when I saw Azteca while on vacation in Washington state. I saw a couple of Azteca restaurants on my drive and decided to stroll into this one.

The ambiance was typical of a Mexican restaurant (arches, color, and decor). Chips and salsa were promptly brought out, but not as fresh and tasty as I am used to. The menu offered the typical food found at a Mexican restaurant (burritos, tacos, mariscos, enchiladas, etc.).

I was with my dad, so we ordered the feast. The food came out piping hot and with fresh hand made tortillas. The best part was the tortillas and steak fajita. Ribs were not very tasty and the chicken was dry. The shrimp really didn't have much to them, but were ok. The beans and rice seemed old and lacking something (taste?).

There was a lot of food and the price was about 15 dollars per person.

BTW: You will have to pay for parking, so bring cash. The restaurant will deduct the amount of your parking stub from your bill if you bring in the parking receipt.

OK, I think this is somewhere between 2-3 stars. Yes, I've had better at practically every little Mexican restaurant I've been to, but for a chain, Azteca is OK. I like their chile relleno, and their Taco Tuesdays (all you can eat tacos, beans, and rice for 5 bucks) is a winner. The wait staff is friendly and usually fast, and it's an easygoing, low-key sort of place.

You do get a ton of food, like enough for three meals. Plus, a veritable mountain of chips and salsa. I'm not super-impressed with the salsa, but salsa is a big deal for me. Admittedly, I'm hard to please in that department.

You do have to pay for lot parking at this location, but Azteca will take the parking cost off your bill as long as your bill is $20 or more.

My husband and I (and some of our closest friends) absolutely LOVE AZTECA!! Best place to eat delicious mexican food, you get ALOT for each order, fair prices, and AWESOME tasty drinks! They really are giving when it comes to alcohol! ;-) We absolutely LOVE their Fajitas!!! Our friend ordered a burrito, omg, that thing was a monster!! It came on a HUGE plate, with several sides, and there were 2 diff kinds of burritos, he didnt finish even half!! Awesome, huge, sharable proportions i'd say! We have been going here for over 10 years, and will be always coming back!!

I have been to Azteca a multitude of times and really enjoyed it.  It was my first and last time at this particular location.  My mate and I went to check out the Radio Flyer wagon in the park before an appointment north of town.  We finished snapping pics too early to head north, but we had some time on the meter left that we didn't want to waste.  We contemplated visiting the bookstore, but knew it would be too tempting to spend an overabundance of money.  So when we saw the Azteca in walking distance we went in to have a quick pineapple-chipotle mojito as they are our favorite!  Perfect way to quickly kill some time!

When we walked in, the bar was not evident.  I scanned the room and didn't see it at all.  So the hostess seated us at a table and provided chips and salsa.  When I looked at the (chain) restaurant's menu--there was no pineapple-chipotle anything.  How could that be?  Azteca is a CHAIN, shouldn't the menu be the same at each location???  I hoped it was just some oversight, and asked our waitress if they had the drink we came in for.  She did not understand what I was asking and grabbed an older waitress to translate.  We had come to the establishment specifically for this drink and they did not have it *sigh*

Rather than doing the walk of mortification out of the restaurant, we ordered a kiwi and a watermelon mojito.  After a short wait they were delivered.  You could not taste the rum at all and the mint was not muddled one bit.  But for an itallian soda of ice and flavored syrup the 8oz drinks were OK. . .

Next, the older waitress came to get our food orders, and we sheepishly told her we only came for the drinks.  She literally slammed her notebook closed and asked if we wanted our bill.  I said we did.  Then we awkwardly waited, feeling sorry we hadn't seen the bar in the back corner until they had seated us.  And we waited some more.  We had to leave really soon because we were cutting it close to our appointment time by then, so I put my debit card on the edge of the table.  The waitress that didn't speak English very well came and asked if we needed the check, and I said "Yes."  I guess we had told the wrong lady that we needed the bill and the message was never delivered to the proper person?  After a brief wait, the older waitress came back and briskly took my card.  After another wait, she set the card and receipt on the table and walked away without another word.

Get this:  The amount of the bill was $18!!!!!!!  For two ice-syrupy drinks and complementary chips and salsa we had to pay $9 apiece!  Yes, it is sort of douchy to sit at a table then only order drinks.  But it is not like we were unruly or rude in any way, and we did not deserved to be treated like scum of the Earth by the wait-staff.  And certainly--nothing was worth the ticket price we paid--what a scam!  I was astounded, but arguing the bill would have made us late.  I paid it, but will never go back.  If you don't want to get ripped off, you should not go in there either!

Worst place to go. If they stay open. We called around 8:15. To see what time they close. They said 10 PM. We were coming from Silverwood amusement park to Spokane 45min away. We arrived 9:07pm. Doors were locked and open sign off but their hours on window says they freaking close at 10pm. WTF. Don't waste your time at this Azteca location.  That tells you something if they can't follow through their own hours imagine the bad service. I ate Azteca in some of the locations in Puget Sound (Seattle area). Never never had that happen to me.
Instead we ate Old spaghetti factory Spokane - best service ever.

I have 3 words for you:

    $5.00 TACO TUESDAY.

This should be self-explanatory, however, I will give you the rundown anyways.

This lasts 'til 9 at night, and 5 dollars for ALL YOU CAN EAT TACOS.

    GLUTTONS ARE WELCOME.

I've never had Mexican food in Canada, but if I did...I imagine this is what it would taste like.  (no offense Canucks, looooooooooooove youuuuu)

The food isn't horrible, it's just incredibly dull and bland.  The "salsa" is like tomato sauce with chunks of onion in it.  Everything seems completely devoid of seasonings or flavor (except salt).

How everyone but me prefers this place to Rancho is beyond me.  This is the worst Mexican I've had in Spokane.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: if you want Mexican in Spokane go to DeLeon's!

Azteca is to Mexican food what Olive Garden is to Italian. Yes it's Americanized, but it's affordable, comfortable, and delicious. Taco Tuesdays at Azteca is awesome (or at least was awesome during my college days). If it's still $5-6 for unlimited Taco's with Rice & Beans...dude that's a bargain....although they'll get their money's worth from you...I think they add extra salt/msg in their tacos to make you buy more drinks..I don't think I've ever went to one Taco Tuesday at Azteca without ordering at least 2-3 Margaritas. The parking at the new location kind of sucks.

I've been to Azteca a lot, and I like their food and drinks. But this experience was less than pleasing. The other day, my mate and I decided to stop in for a hurried drink at Azteca before our meter expired and we had somewhere to be. It was not busy there at all. We were seated at a table because we didn't immediately notice the bar but we would've sat in the bar if we had. At all the other Azteca restaurants we've been to they have a certain kind of mojito that is really good. After being seated we found out they didn't have it at this one. Ok, sad but no big deal, we'll just order different ones. We are adaptable. But they brought out basically syrup and ice. The mint was not muddled, and barely any rum. What the...? We had to go soon so we asked for the check when the waitress came to take an order. She slammed her book and walked away! The rest of the time there we felt super uncomfortable, and the check took about 6-7 minutes to arrive. Super rude service, bad drinks and guess what? Our bill for 2 "mojitos" was $18.00. Seriously. This was at 3pm, shouldn't it have been happy hour? Won't be going to this location again. Good grief.

I am in a quandary in how I should I rate Azteca.

If I compare it to the average Mexican restaurant in LA it would rate 2 stars

If I compare it to the average Mexican restaurant in Spokane it would rate 4.9 stars.

So it's a really tough call.

As most people have pointed out they are a chain that specializes in northern style Mexican food. Plate are usually garnished with rice and refried beans (yawn). They are IMHO pretty pricy for plain-ish Mexican-American style food. You can get better value and more authenticity and slightly better food at Pueblo Amigos, you can get very similar food and better value at fiesta Mexicana, which is probably their closest comparison.

They do have some great deals at happy hour and special like taco Tuesdays but I have never been much a gimmick shopper. (That doesn't mean they are good, it just means I never think about them in time).

Bottom Line: I have never had a bad meal there, but I have never had a really great meal there either. The food is average but slightly pricey for what you get, but their ambiance is probably the best of all of the edible Mexican restaurants.

The Azteca in the Valley Mall does not impress me at all.  The service isn't that great and they've brought me out cold food several times.

However, the north and downtown locations are excellent.  We usually hit the downtown location and have wonderful service.  They are always friendly, prompt and helpful.

We love the happy hour and late night menu...appetizers and margaritas are dirt cheap and they are wonderful.  The full menu is also excellent.  Very large portions!   Azteca is where we usually go for Mexican because we know that it won't disappoint.  We've tried a few other places in town and always come back to Azteca.

Azteca is a chain restaurant with locations all over the northwest. It is like the Applebee's of Mexican food.  Not good, but not completely awful.  I do not go to Azteca for regular dining, but I do stop in for the $5 taco Tuesday every once in a while.  You really can't beat a $5 all you can eat taco bonanza, even if the food is just so-so.

Get there before six for the drink specials in the bar. If I remember correctly, everything on tap is 1/2 price, including the Mexican beers and the micro's.

For a truly great Mexican meal, go to Rancho Viejo at Sprague and Evergreen in the Valley. It's the best in Spokane!

I use to live in LA so this food is nothing compared to what I'm used to... Not very good and very expensive for what you get.  If you want amazing Mexican food go to DeLeons on west riverside... That is almost as close to the Mexican food I use to buy in LA....

Pollo fundido (or however it's spelled) is yummy!

I've eaten at the Azteca downtown and northtown and enjoyed both times. I enjoy the traditional Mexican-American style classics and some different items that are a little closer to traditional Mexican fare. I was hoping to find Seviche  (a simple receipe that tastes amazing especially with shrimp).

The ambiance is festive and service always good. Portions HUGE and make great left-overs. Watch out for those Mojitos!! They go down quick and cool!

This is my go-to mexican in Spokane until I muster up the courage to try anywhere else. It's good and that's that.

That being said, what's the deal with taco tuesdays? It is only 5 dollars but the tacos are horrible, IMO. Just sayin'

How can you not love this place?? The arroz con pollo is the best. The portion sizes are HUGE, and the appetizers alone are meal-worthy. The waitstaff and servers are excellent and always friendly. The patio is great during the summer.  This place is always hoppin'. I love it! I've never had a bad experience here. It can also be a good place to catch a Zags or Coug game  :o)

A really good standby for all day happy hour on Sunday. $6 giant burritos plus $3 spicy been dip, $2.75 for Mexican draft beers, and specials on their Margaritas. A great way to save some money when you are downtown for a fun Sunday.

Ugh. If you like Denny's, you'll love Azteca. Aside from their Taco Tuesdays or happy hour, the food is bland, dry, and over priced, like most Azteca restaurants in their chain. I remember when Azetca's food was pretty good and they had a salsa bar with freshly made salsas. We used to buy a jar to go. Now they only serve a bland and watery house salsa.

I would by no means rate this as Grade A Mexican food but then again I am bias...I thought that is was good though.  I had a Chile Relleno (which is something that so many restaurants seem to not be able to get right).  They did an ok job at making it though.  They even used the right kind of chile.  However, I still believe that there is no truly good Mexican food to be had in Spokane.  However, until I go home, it would suffice.

The portions are HUGE. Maybe not the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had, but delicious nonetheless. I got the Carne Asada Burrito and it was easily 2 meals, maybe more if I could have stopped myself from eating so much. And I'm not one of those girls who barely eats, I'm that girl that normally cleans her plate at every meal, so for it to be 2+ meals for me is saying something. Anyways, it's a fun place....brightly painted, funny pictures, delicious heaping mounds of Mexican food. I'd recommend it, and if you check it out, I'd also recommend wearing your fat pants.
