Review from Jennie P.
I can't believe I've never been to Azteca before. I have walked by this restaurant probably hundreds of times and never stopped and I'm almost disappointed in myself because this place is hands down my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city.
I love Mexican food and would eat it every night if I could. I have been to several Mexican restaurants, trying them all out, the high-end ones, the mid-priced ones, and the reasonable ones and Azteca ranks above all of them.
The restaurant itself is small - maybe 10 tables. There's tv's up in the corner, the kitchen is right in the middle. You sit down kind of thinking..those Yelpers have fooled me..there is NO way THIS place is 5 stars...but it IS!
The food is so fresh - we had chicken taquitos as an appetizer and they were great...there was not a spec of grease on them...the chicken was tender and flavorful along with the guac....the chips and salsa...same thing...the salsa was SO fresh and the chips came out warm! hhheeavveen!
Onto dinner...I had the shredded chicken tacos and hubby had the some sort of beef...again..SO fresh...and just the right amount of food. I was actually full after one and took the remainder home...but again, veggies were fresh, meat was tender...everything was just amazing.
Naturally, since I was taking most of my meal home for leftovers..that means I saved room for dessert so we had fried ice cream which was ALSO incredible.
I can't say enough great things about this place...on top of everything being so fresh...it's all reasonable AND BYOB! So you can enjoy ALL that food at a reasonable price..I think our bill after chips/salsa, taquitos, tacos, and fried ice cream..was $30.
Azteca, I'm so sorry I've been living in the city forever and never given you a shot...I'm truly ashamed of myself. I will be back, that is for sure! -

I'd like to start by saying that I am spoiled when it comes to Mexican food, seeing as I have spent many summers eating REAL Mexican food in Mexico. And to be fair... Mexican food is probably the worst food keep fresh when delivered......
On that note, one snowy cold night I decided to order delivery Mexican food, and this place seemed to have the best reviews. We had shredded beef, shrimp and carnitas tacos. These were basically uneatable. The meat had no flavor, the corn tortillas had transformed into some rubbery mushy mess. In short, my dog had a fabulous dinner that night. Luckily we also ordered nachos and these were GOOD. Im sure when they are served hot and fresh in the restaurant they are fantastic!!
The next morning we both barely made it out of bed due to mysterious stomach pain...
Don't think I will be ordering tacos from here again, but I will definitely stop in for the nachos. -

The food was really good. If you stay in and eat you get free and delicious chips and salsa. The salsa is really good, but I do not think the chips are homemade. I got a burrito and it came so fast and was so good. Everything seemed fresh and authentic and I was pleased.
The only complaint that I have is that we were the only ones in the restaurant and our chips never got refilled and it took them a while to refill our waters.
I would go back if I was in the area, but I am also going to try other Mexican restaurants closer to me that might be better. -

I was craving Mexican one cold night this winter and decided to try Azteca de Oro based on the raving Yelp reviews! The food arrived quickly and was less greasy than I expected for Mexican delivery. I was particularly impressed, especially for the area, as Wrigleyville isn't exactly known for quality food choices. I'll be ordering again, and maybe even dine-in (with a few BYO beers)...

We liked this place. A lot. I wouldn't have imagined a great *real* Mexican place in Wrigleyville but this food is legit. They have cochinita pibil tacos with pickled onion, which is fairly uncommon in your average joint. This place has the affordable prices of a dive, but it's clean and cheerful. Service was excellent. Careful with the hot sauce, you will cry.

Took my girlfriend here. The best. Service was great. Loved fish tacos. Was like being on vacation. Great deal for the money too.

Dont judge a book by it's cover. The place almost resembles a fast food joint but once you get the food it changes things. Thought I was going to have a typical mexican meal but meals are served in a very "gourmet" manner. Parking my be an issue.
Scale: 1-10
Parking: 3 (parking meters and paid lots near by)
Atmosphere: 6 simple but very clean
Food: 8
Big screen tv. Friendly staff. BYOB. -

Food tasted OK, but everything was cold when served. We never got a check in to ask if the food could be warmed up either. Also, the speaker was blown with music turned up all the way. After 30 minutes it got pretty annoying. Worth another try, but wasn't entirely satisfied with the meal.

OK, I will be brief. Go there, go there now, go there as fast as you can run! Drive there if you live in the burbs or hop the train. But no matter how you do it, go there. I am not a five star guy, so when I say it's a five it's a five. You won't be disappointed in the food or the price. Have fun, go Azteca!!

Love this place! I come here once a week just about. Great drunk food and even really good when sober. Great prices, BYOB, nice staff, great meat. This place won't disappoint. The enchilada suizo is the best thing ever!

Best Mexican I've had in Chicago. What puts them a step above all other places I've been are the fresh ingredients. It makes a huge difference to have your meal made on the spot, and not just thrown in the microwave or sitting in a pot for hours on end. The atmosphere is great too. It's a small place but it's incredibly clean and brightly decorated.
Mexican food is great to begin with but they've just gone the extra mile (without adding any cost to the customer) and it shows. -

Have had Azteca delivered 5 or 6 times in the last few months... Conversation usually goes like this:
Me: "how about delivery tonight?"
Wifey: "ok, let's get the good Mexican"
Me- "done and done"
As you can see, "good Mexican" azteca in our house. It also means a burrito bowl for here, and the steak and shrimp combo for me (amazing sauce with this one)
Usually arrives in less than 40 min, which is nice. -

My first visit: very delicious food, more than enough for one person comes with the burrito dinners, and the big pieces of sirloin in my burrito were juicy and tender. The horchata was excellent, so were the churros. The prices are very reasonable, and we had an extremely patient waitress. Hope I get to visit again.

3 words: baja fish burrito. Don't resist it, you will thank yourself later. Living close to this place means I'm gaining a good 15 pounds this winter. Oh well, it'll be worth it.

This is a go to when Mexican delivery is in order. The place is a step above your standard taqueria. They use fresh and quality ingredients. I'll take a veggie burrito with black beans, peppers, onions, and rice over wilted, shredded iceberg lettuce and canned re-fried beans any day. The guacamole is fantastic as well. My favorite thing on their menu, fish tacos. Amazing.
I really don't have much to say other than the food is fantastic and they deliver late and quickly. What more can you ask for? -
Review from Ling H.
YUM! This place is really good!
We walked in at at freakin' 11:40ish on a Thursday night because the Red line was doing some sort of construction that left only 1 track open for 3 or 4 trains going in both directions... go figure.
The workers though, were nice and let us order and eat there. Although, the guy who took our order, cleared our place settings after we sat down and asked us if we were eating there. Uh, yes we are. I understand though. By this time it was 11:50PM and they were still making our food. It's ok. We showed them. We eat fast :)
So we got the tortilla soup, which was AWESOME. I've never had tortilla soup before, but I can tell you it was great and hit the spot on a cold, rainy Chicago night. The soup itself wasn't salty AT ALL and the freshly fried tortilla chips on top went great with the soup. At the very bottom were avocados. Hah. I could also taste the freshness of the cilantro in the soup. Mmmmm. I can just taste it now!
We also ordered the fish tacos that everyone raved about. I have never had a fish taco. *Gasp* I know. But yes, never. It was good. Nicely fried and had this good cabbage slaw that went on top of it. The pilaf it came with though, passable.
All in all a great meal and we were out by 12:04AM! -
Review from Kristy K.
Tried the Baja Fish Tacos and they were fabulous! Never thought I would be so satisfied with fish tacos delivered. They are awesome!
Azteca de Oro continues to provide high quality, fresh food. You can't get better. Ahhh, the Cochinita Pobil crosses my mind multiple times, daily. Hence, why I am randomly updating. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their habanero sauce that comes accompanies the pork. My god, it is so addicting. Oh, and my goodness try their horchata. Perfect. Seriously, one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago. This is a hidden gem.
What happened to your lunch menu, Azteca? Boo.
I still love you.Listed in: My 'hood, Heat Seekers

Pretty good tacos. Chorizo- tasty, slightly cinnamon flavor. The special carnitas braised in something that come in a 3 pack- outstanding. There were two other types of carnitas and I can't remember which was absolutely bland and which was my absolute favorite. I think it's the al pastor that was bland and the regular carnitas that was amazing. Only real complaint is that their taco corn tortillas are subpar in flavor/quality/texture.

The best tacos I've ever had at 2 am!!! Unexpectedly delicious-
Hanging out in one of my least favorite neighborhoods in Chicago we found ourselves hungry after leaving a local bar and decided to get some tacos. I really thought I was going to end up at some greasy taco joint, and at 2 am there aren't many choices so I was fine with it. We entered Azteca and ordered and were surprised to see fresh ingredients and hot tortillas without a drop of oil or grease on them. Not only that, but the tacos were delicious and our server very nice. If we lived near there we would get delivery for sure. -

Very good. It is difficult to stand out in when it comes to small, inexpensive Mexican restaurants. There is a limited # of ingredients that are typically utilized and ALL seems pretty delicious (cover any food in melted cheese, sour cream and guac and it's a 'go' for me), but this place has an edge. They seem to have a different recipe than the rest. They mix it up a bit and the flavors are tweaked so it is actually memorable. For instance, there was fresh cilantro on the nachos....not just mixed in with the pico de gallo so you could really taste it. Suh Guhd.

They deliver in 30 minutes or fewer, and the food is fantastic. Fresh ingredients and it's obvious they take great pride in food preparation and taste. I've gotten delivery from Azteca about six or seven times.

This is the best high quality mexican restaurant around. Their nachos use shredded cheese instead of that liquid stuff, which is delicious. Their enchiladas and burritos are amazing as well, though they are pretty expensive for mexican food. $17 for nachos and enchiladas, which is double most other places.

This my go-to Mexican delivery - the food is cheap but fresh and always arrives on time and well-presented. Get the fish tacos, cochinita pibil entree (comes with guac AND plantains!) or the sopes and you won't be disappointed!

I was excited about this place seeing the high star ranking and it is so close to me. I was a little disappointed, but maybe I was just expecting too much. I do agree with reviewers that the ingredients here are very fresh - peppers, onions, etc.
What we had: queso fondido, guacamole, veggie enchiladas, and veggie burrito. Fondido - good, heavy seeing it's just all cheese. Guacamole - unfortunately I can not give it as high of review as others, far from best in the city. Actually I thought it was onions and tomatoes with just a little avocado thrown in; very underwhelming.
Dinners: one thing lacking all around: sauce. The enchiladas just didn't have enough, it was apparent as soon as they put the plates down. Sauce did not cover the corn tortillas. And the burrito had none, inside or out. Again, fresh vegetables, but the taste and the sauce was heavily lacking.
This place is half step above a hole-in-the-wall (it's actually very clean and nice) but it is the grill in the main area with 4-6 tables scattered around. One "waitress" who was just running back and forth. It's just fine - but don't be expecting a real sit-down dinner.
Overall, just lacking a bit. Nothing bad, but I don't foresee the craving to return. Just barely made 3 stars. -

This place was so unbelievably good. I absolutely love Mexican and this place was the best that I've had in Chicago.
It's a rather casual decor (though that didn't stop us from wearing our "going out" clothes). The service was very nice and friendly - we brought a bottle of wine and our waitress brought a bucket of ice for us to put it in!
You start with chips & spicy salsa. I had the chicken fajitas and my friend had the conchinita pibil - both were fresh and extremely flavorful.
I will be going back ASAP. -

Dined there for the second time in two weeks with my husband last night because we couldn't stay away. This place is GREAT! I'm so glad I discovered it through Yelp. The food is really fresh and the ingredients are high quality. It's nice to find a Mexican place where you don't have to be halfway questioning the ingredients. The food at Azteca is always flavorful, fresh and good quality. They do a bustling takeout and delivery business--the guys in the kitchen are always busy! They also have 5-7 tables for dine-in but it's pretty casual--no tablecloths or anything, although you can BYOB.
We have had the fire-grilled quesadilla, the fish tacos, the cochinita pibil, the tacos alambre (with ribeye, bacon, poblano pepper and melted cheese), and the loaded burrito. All have been great! My favorites might be the fire-grilled quesadilla (huge! enough for an entree for 1 person if you wish), the fish tacos, the burrito and the alambre tacos, in that order. Be aware that their food definitely has spice and kick, so if you really want things mild, you should ask for that.
The funny thing is, we had dinner at Rick Bayless' Topolobampo earlier this week, and I think we both commented that we got more enjoyment out of our casual meal at Azteca than at Topolo. The food was great and it was an excellent value. This will be our go-to quick Mexican place from now on. -

Good food!
The guacamole was awesome. It might be the second best guacamole I've ever eaten (the first was homemade... I still want that recipe!).
I got a pastor burrito en suizo (sp?). The pastor was good. It had a good rich flavor and the sauce that covered the burrito was just the right amount of spice to give some nice flavor without over powering the contents of the burrito. I also tried the chicken sopes which were well done.
One thing you must get here is the Horchata (the waiter, seeing that I was a gringo, called it "rice water;" but I know from my days in divey Mexican places that it is Horchata!) The Horchata is excellent, especially if you have a dish that might be a little on the spicy side. The drink instantly cools down your palette. I love that hint of cinnamon mixed with the flavorful water!
I would absolutely go back if I were in the area! -

I like to gauge Mexican delivery on whether or not it's going to make me want to take off of work the next day due to medical reasons. Azteca de Oro rates pretty well, meaning the food is good and I'm not running for the border hours later.
Azteca de Oro isn't your typical hole in the wall Mexican joint. If that's what you prefer, then I suggest going somewhere else. The quality of the food here is pretty good, not just thrown together from yesterday's garbage like a lot of places I've ordered from and probably won't again.
I've ordered a few things here. The Baja fish tacos are all they're hyped up to be... crispy, beer battered. They're not exactly the healthiest, but at least it won't send you to the hospital. If you want to go healthy, I would recommend the tilapia bowl, grilled fish on rice and steamed vegetables. And the nachos. They put black beans on them, not refried beans. Aren't we all kind of sick of refried beans on soggy nachos?
Pretty satisfied with everything I've ordered from Azteca de Oro. And despite the name, Montezuma will not have his revenge. Not tonight. -

I've never actually been to the restaurant, but I've ordered delivery a half dozen times now and wow. I'm addicted. Their Tacos Alambre are unbelievable. Tacos with bacon and a good portion of ribeye and poblano strips with a spicy guajillo sauce.. oh boy. I only wish they offered this in a burrito. Another favorite is the Ultimate Azteca Combo, which is perfectly cooked skirt steak, smothered with cheese and seasoned garlic-butter shrimp in a guajillo sauce. Fantastic! I've also had a variety of their regular tacos, all of which were exceptionally fresh and tasty.
Portion sizes are perfect for the price. Delivery is FAST. I live in Northcenter and they regularly deliver within 20-30 minutes. Their sides are good too, the rice is tasty and the refried beans are freaking great (I'm not usually a big fan of beans, either). I highly recommend this place. They rock, the food is awesome and they're open late (till 5am on weekends!) -

Two words. Fish Tacos. You have to get the fish tacos. They are beyond incredible. This was our first trip to this restaurant, but I have no doubt we'll be back. We also tried the chicken enchiladas which were great, full of flavor and not greasy. The restaurant is very clean, the service was efficient, the food is made from quality ingredients, it's BYOB. What more could you ask for?
But seriously, get the fish tacos. -
Review from Jelena Z.
Burritos? Yes, they will do.
Tacos? Mhm. Just okay.
Steak sandwich? Not so good, not at all... the steak was sub-par, the bread unextraordinary and the lettuce? Brown, warm and wilted. And, the pepper jack cheese wasn't even melted. Hello, melted cheese make everything better. Sad face!
The nicest delivery people in the world work here! However, there are much better Mexican restaurants on the area... finding ones that deliver is the problem, however.Listed in: No you DIDN'T!, Deliver Me, Please! (Chicago), ALL Mariachi, ALL the time., Al Pastor., Flan!

I just wanted a little something to eat after a Cubs game so I stopped in here. They have some of the best salsa guacamole I've had in a long time. One weird thing is that it's BYOB, they don't serve alcohol here, which threw me off as it's the first time I've been to a Mexican restaurant that doesn't serve alcohol. Also, the staff there is very friendly.

We got a ton of food delivered from Azteca de Oro.
Overall, it was pretty freaking awesome. The food was fresh and they actually presented it as though it was on a plate in the little styrofoam containers.
I don't remember the exact things we got, but they were all really, really good. My major complaints are the price, portion size, and tip. It's pretty expensive for Mexican fare and the portions are less than generous. An order of plantains meant about six or seven slices. The tip was a huge issue for me-- It's automatically added to the bill without any customer choice in amount. They just take a percentage of your bill and charge you. LAME. I know it sucks to get a crappy tip, but trust your customers to be fair.
It got here in less time than they said it would take to cook our food-- yay, I think. I guess it could've been precooked, but it didn't taste that way.
For two entrees, a small order of guacamole, and an order of plantains.. along with the preset tip, it came to around $50.
Will I order from ADO again? I don't know. It was good, but it wasn't really $50 good.
