Review from Johnny T.
Obviously, I am a tourist. I think the only black person I saw in Santa Fe was a reflection of myself in the mirror in my hotel room. I am not female. I enjoy bathing. Given these three facts and some of the vitriolic reviews below, you would think that I would have hated ASC. On the contrary, I rather liked it.
Without a doubt, it's a place for locals. There's no glitz or glamor. There is, however, a slightly shaded outdoor seating area (complete with heat and flying, stinging insects; it's nature. I get it) and three rooms of indoor seating, shabby chic chairs, a/c, and good, local cafe fare. Not knowing what to choose from the menu, I decided on a pork and green chile soup, hummus sandwich and San Pellegrino. Yes, another meal with chiles. I know. I settled down in the middle dining room, pulled out a paper and got to the business of reading and eating.
I enjoyed everything. The soup (on special) had depth, heat and copious amounts of pork. It was nothing new taste profile-wise, but it was very satisfying. The hummus was of a good consistency, not runny and nicely garlicky. My vantage point allowed me to peek into all three rooms and while sparsely populated, I could get a good sense of why people enjoy it and just who feels comfortable here. The best part, as I checked in and checked out, I enjoyed their offer of % off and grabbed a cookie for the road. The baked goods are *quite* attractive (and delicious). Don't leave without tasting one. -

Saw a review that said "best coffee in town" & it's true!
Great light dining, too, and comfy hip atmosphere. -

My husband and I were visiting from Los Angeles and stopped in for a snack. In all my life, I have never tasted a more delicious iced coffee. My husband brought it to me while I was browsing the consignment store across the street. I loved the taste of the coffee so much, that as soon as I finished the first one, I came back for a second one. I've been to all the coffee houses in Los Angeles, and this is by far the best tasting coffee ever. Be sure to stop in while visiting Santa Fe!

We found this gem of a place thanks to yelp. Santa Fe was another stop on a recent cross-country road trip, and I'm happy to say our first meal out in Santa Fe was at Aztec. It was a cute little colorful cafe with a small diverse menu with lots of veggie friendly options. My friend and I, both vegetarians, ended up getting their roasted garlic hummus sandwich and their black bean burger and shared a bowl of their black bean chili soup. There was snow outside and the weather was chilly. Aztec's food was very tasty, hearty, but somehow still felt healthy!, and sat well with us on such a cold day. Service was friendly and quick. Locals are lucky to have this place to go to regularly, and visitors who check out Aztec, will be lucky too.

If your from out of town visiting Santa Fe looking for a cafe off the beating path away from the plaza which is occupied by locals of all walks of life, then this is your place. I happened to stumble upon Aztec while cruising back from the Farmer's Market. I loved the laid back vibe, hippie decor immediately. An extra bonus was the outside patio area which is perfect place to read while drinking your coffee (or eat your food) on a sunny day.
I did not get the chance to try the coffee, but I did have the vegetarian breakfast burrito which was so tasty. It was filled with crispy potatoes which were seasoned perfectly, veggies and egg. I couldn't believe it was only $5.25, what a deal!
Service is kinda slow and staff aren't the friendliest, but its all good because I was away from the hustle and bustle of the city I am from, therefore I wasn't bothered, just happy to enjoy such a good meal for under $6.Listed in: My favorite breakfast spots…

I am not currently a lesbian and I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but this place has always had free WiFi and great sandwiches. The crowd that comes here is sometimes snooty, but I can deal with those types without judging the establishment in that way. Who cares?
When I was visiting from California they would allow me to post my travelers Zine and everyone was always nice. I do miss the smoking atmosphere and the record store that used to be next door, but people... It's time to move on. -

I grew up in the Aztec Cafe. I loved the Aztec about 4 owners ago. Back when there were 2 back rooms and no cut off smoking room closed off in the back. The place used to be awesome, sitting on the front patio drinking coffee watching people suck down their yerba mate while trying to ease back to life from last nights crazy party.
While many of the same dirty nailed scum bags still do what they do best on the patio, it's lost a lot of the soul that made the place what it was a decade ago.
The only reason I will return to Aztec is for nostalgia here and there. The new owner is a mega youknowwhat. The few times I've been in there in recent times she has been less than pleasant. Too bad, used to be a great place to hang out.
UPDATED: (5/16/2009)
I tried giving Aztec another shot and about $12 of my business every day since I'm a coffee addict and require 2 lattes everyday. However, after the owner treated me like a dog and threw my latte very aggressively after she repeated my simple order and made it wrong I prefer to give my money to the likes of Starbucks over her. This place blows. -

Nice menu, service was kind and helpful. I enjoyed the ambiance but the outside was really pleasant and there were signs that you could bring Fido (little milk bones at the counter inside at the register and a water dish on the patio). I had a lox plate - it was perfect and so was the price $7.50! My friend, who sat by an aztec mural of a woman and her mammary gland, had a bagel and egg sandwich with bacon. My friend was happy with her meal too. The house coffee was good; to get a "warmer" or refill, you have to go back to the counter inside. I look forward to going back again.

The Aztec, only a few years ago (2004/2006) would have been four stars, and likely edging towards five. It's one of my first stops (or my very first) whenever hiking into Santa Fe. Because I'm away for a year, I get snap-shot memories that hit home the radical changes the place has gone thru.
Positive changes? The re-painting and structures erected on the outside patio are amazing. The quality of the food has raised a star. The Aztec's (Yerba) Mate Latte is still the best in New Mexico. Their is still seating all over the place. WiFi is still free, and the signal is still good. The positives end there.
I don't recognize any of the old baristas, and the new ones are either: a. rushed; or, b. uninterested in customers. I'm basing this only off of the two who served us in August of '08.
The parking has only gotten worse. Parking isn't a problem for locals who can bike or bus to the Aztec, but it is Issue #1 for travelers.
Smoking has been eliminated from everywhere on the grounds according to the new staff. Smokers stand across from the patio in the alley-ish thoroughfare. This eliminates a lot o' the best conversations that were once had here... along with the conversationalists.
Prices are still medium-high, but the Mate Latte (again) remains worth the cost. Hours are still very limited, with exception to Fridays and Saturdays (unless it's Winter).
Finally, and likely the hardest hit, the crowd has shifted dramatically. More of the art-scene has flooded into the Aztec, but the more snobbish judgmental ones... not the open-minded free spirits. Most are not at the shop for conversation, or came to meet a specific person.
Despite the negatives, the Aztec remains a solid stop to get coffee and get some work done. It may never be the best coffee shop in New Mexico, but I can at least make it my hallmark for what makes an indie cafe "firmly average."
...but don't forget the Mate Latte. Seriously. Best in New Mexico. -

This place has great coffee, good food and treats (try the organic brownies) and the staff is super friendly.
The crowd that comes here varies from drippy hippie/crystal waiving locals, hipsters, tourists and just your regular Joe/Joanne and I think that is one of its best qualities.
The only bummer for me is I don't smoke nor can I stand the smell of smoke, and people tend to smoke beside the outdoor seating and on Aztec street, both of which seep into the cafe. -

I lived down the street from The Aztec, and even knew a few girls that worked here and a few former employees, but didn't go in for a few reasons -
1. I am not a dyke and like to wear high heels. The dykes that work here do NOT like high heels.
2. I never felt like I was local enough to be accepted here - I always felt like I was unwanted if I went in when my friend wasn't working, and truth be told, I probably was not wanted.
Okay coffee. That's all I ever got. -

I love it when Aidan is working...he always brings a smile to my face when I walk in! Plus, his self-proclaimed amazing Quiche really is AMAZING! I've always enjoyed his cooking! Also, Sarah, the owner, is super cool. She definitely turned this place around from what it used to be many years ago. Props to these guys for really bringing this place back to life. Oh...and they have Yerba Matté too, which makes my insides happy!

Funky little place - extensive menu and unique selection. Great snacks/soups and even a small wine list. Independent, clearly well thought out, and nice art-centric decor.
Mexican hot chocolate was good and the coffee was tasty.
$6 min on credit cards or 50 cent surcharge! -

best cup of coffee in town.
really yummy breakfast burritos.
the bagel with hummus and green chilies is really unexpectedly good!
the ultra-hipness of the place can be a bit off-putting when you first walk in (especially when new in town), but give it a chance. you'll be happy you did.
bonus: free wi-fi and a house computer you can use for free! -

Stinky scenesters aside, we had a wonderful meal. The staff were very courteous and the outdoor patio quaint. This place reminded me of college, in the best way.

Aztec is a cozy place where hippies, hipsters, cowboys, Indians, and gurus all congregate to enjoy Santa Fe's best coffee. Come with a thick skin, because coffee this good can only be made by the most aloof, condescending waitstaff in town.

i cant think of any reason not to give this place 5 stars. been there a couple times now, everyone was really nice and most importantly... the latte i got here last time was quite possibly the best ive ever had.
definately some hipsters up in this joint. i guess if you dont like hipsters or lesbians you should go "to starbucks".
i like lesbians. i like delicious lattes. i like the location. i like the atmosphere and outdoor seating. 5 stars it is. -

Now this is what a coffee shop should be. From the moment the Aztec comes into view you know it's different. As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted by a tall and interesting character with red curly hair. There was plenty of space in what appeared to be a hodgepodge of rooms brought together through construction over a number of years. Plus they had great outdoor seating with foliage to block the sun. The Aztech had a pretty extensive "coffee shop" menu that also included lunch/dinner items and deserts.

The coffee shop that helped me find my center in Santa Fe. Excellent outdoor atmosphere, and some of the best coffee I have tasted. Also, I like the grunge atmosphere. It's not dirty...just individual.

Best Mexican Mocha I've ever had; I will return here every time I'm lucky enough to be in New Mexico.
