Review from Arielle T.

For only 19 dollars a month, any SDSU student can get access to one of the best gyms in the county! I love all that the ARC and Aquaplex have to offer. There is a huge rock climbing wall, every machine you could ever want and great classes! I personally love Shari's spinning class on Monday nights, as well as Erica's pilates class on Thursdays! Also, the staff does a great job in keeping the places clean!
The Aquaplex is also a great place to either get a good swim workout in or just lounge poolside with friends and a great gossip magazine.
PS. I dare you to take a spinning class and then try to sit in the sauna for 15 minute...UNREAL! ;) -
Review from Adam T.
All I know is that as an SDSU student I am getting a gym membership for $19/month that is an outright steal.
Let me run down what you get for this pittance:
Full on gym, including all the machines you could want, treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, stair masters, arm bikes, all the weight machines, free weights, blah blah.
One of the coolest things, a rock climbing wall!!
Awesome pool area. Jacuzzi, heated pool with about 12 full laps and an area for just floating in.
The one downside is that there used to be a great bowling alley but now with all that stupid construction it is gone. Suckiest thing ever. I was rolling a solid 180 average and got a 268 just a few weeks before it closed. I'd practically be on the PBA by now. -

You get an awesome workout. I like taking my girlfriend there, time flies by much faster there! The only reason I give it 3 stars is that it is super expensive to non-sdsu students! Can get crowded but you can go 24 hours some days. You also get access to the pool!

This review is strictly for the Aquaplex - This place is awesome!
I've yet to have a hard time getting a lane, I've used both shallow and deep lanes and have also had lessons to improve on breaststroke. The instructor was very friendly, knowledgeable and patient. I actually learned quite a bit and for $40 for 5 weeks (5 classes) was a great deal!
I'm a member of 24 hr fitness and it can be a pain to get a lane on busy evenings so the Aquaplex is a great alternative! The locker room is pretty clean and never crowded.
They have tons of kickboards, floaties, buoys, aqua dumbells, etc.
I've not once had to share a lane, and I love that the people here are here only to swim, unlike at typical gyms, you have to deal with a lot of traffic in and out of the saunas and people doing water aerobics, or just standing around, getting in the lanes without a heads up (quite distracting & hightly annoying).
I definitely recommend this place.
You don't have to have a membership, $5 per visit or $40 for 10 visits without committing to a membership.
The one thing that sucks is that they only have the 50 meter lanes open in the summer :( -

This gym is the best deal in the SD area if you are a student at SDSU only $19 a month and includes classes + a GORGEOUS pool + jacuzzi and other amenities.
Parking is a butt if you don't have a school permit, esp during 8 am - 7pm because you can't park on the streets around the area.
The best times to go are 11am-4pm, or 9pm-5am. The gym gets really crowded if you go other times, and you will end up waiting 20-30 minutes for a treadmill when you could be working out.
My favorite part about this gym are the yoga classes. My favorite part about the yoga classes is Stan. He always reminds the class to spread there toes.
They have free towels their, I accidentally took one home, I should probably return it :/ because apparently people steal towels alot. I am not one of those people though.Listed in: My Neighborhood

I really love the ARC and everything it offers!! The only thing that needs to be improved are cleaner bathrooms and disinfectant spray for the workout equipment. Honestly though, it's a great place and for the most part the gym is very clean.

Best basketball games in San Diego. If you can get a pass I'd highly recommend going to this place. Pricy if you aren't a student, for obvious reasons, but everyone gets 1 free pass a year, so check it out! Go to the arc website to get your free pass.

The gym itself is nice and has new equipment. There are a lot of classes available as well. However, because this is a college gym the atmosphere is not great. The girls come in as though they just put on a full face of makeup and the guys walk around like they are the coolest people in that gym. If you can over look the sorority-frat vibe and people that dominate the gym, it can be great. But a gym should be about working out and getting healthy, and shouldn't give off a high school like atmosphere.

Sadness, I am no longer a student, left the ARC because it was a little further from my apt, and there isn't a location up in San Jose, when I feel like working out, when I visit home...
But man, it was and is still a great gym. Really, the only annoying things were:
- when it was super crowded and hard to find machines (same as rush hour 3p-8p)
- when stupid hormonal college boys would try to spit game and be "interested" in how to work legs out--uhhhhhh, yeah buddy *light sock on the shoulder*
- How overpriced it is for not being a student anymore, supersadface.
LOVES:
- Towel service
- Plenty of flat screens for every genre out there
- Individual TV/radio tuners, so you don't have to hear everyone else's doodoo
- Nice assortment of new, clean equipment
- Large variety of classes with very competent instructors (this is where my love for salsa dancing blossomed)
- Being entertained by the cute little blonds who have that pregame cakeface, HAHAHAHHAH LOVE IT!
- Watching the basketball players in the back, they get some really good games going back there
- Open gym volleyball, awesomeness!
- Clean, they generally always have the cleaning staff in there!
- Sauna, yeeeeeeeeeeeees, lemme get my pores all nice and clean!
- 24 hours. YOU CANNOT BEAT IT. I LOVED my 11p-2a workouts. Perfect for the 11am college student!
Eye candy can be a total distraction... blushing during ab workouts and/or cardio is NOT the business!
I always loved the beginning of school years, when the freshman rolled in 5-6 deep, all rotate on one machine at a time, and leave an hr and a half later thinking they got their sweat on. Pshhh. Teeheehee.
Great gym, just do it!!! -

San Diego, CA
I'm not a meat head and cannot see paying $40 for the place unless I'm as rich as the middle-aged has-been's whom spend inordinate hours gawking at college 19 year olds while they attempt to keep their flabby skin taut. They're just gross.
That and the peak hours between 4-7pm when every machine and weight is being used are my only complaints with this gym.
Otherwise, the equipment is pristine and there are two massive rooms with more than enough things to keep a person occupied. Frequent classes are offered (though I still have yet to participate in one) and the courts for indoor soccer and basketball are aplenty.
Seeing as how I still pay only $19/month for the gym and the aquaplex, I think I do alright.
The staff is comprised of college students looking to fill their downtime and aren't gym nazis looking to enforce every obligatory rule.
And as for some of the other reviewers who complained about no parking, it seems ironic to me that there are plenty of spots a half mile's walk away down 54th but that that exercise would be sacrilegious to partake in.
Great gym, superlative equipment/machines/weights, clean bathrooms, and plenty of other minute services offered make this place a pretty excellent choice for trimming up. -

I have edited this review many times, but I think this will be the last. This easily would have gotten 5 stars from me if I was a student at SDSU or someone who works on campus. I don't understand why someone would pay $39 to use this gym unless you really use a ton of equipment and want to stare at college students.
Why did I give this a low score? Well unless I want to work out here super early in the morning or very late at night, you won't find street parking and probably couldn't even find paid parking in P5 which lately I haven't been able to find a spot in. I haven't been able to go to the gym as much due to the parking situation. I would have loved to have taken the trolley but at $5 round trip to go 4 times a week or by getting a pass it just financially isn't forth it since the gym is expensive for non students/non community members. In the mean time I will probably just get a million of those 1 week trial passes at other local local gyms and take the financial lost of joining this gym. I admit though I didn't think I would have as many parking problems here as I thought I would and that was very stupid of me.
My 4 months will be up in May and I don't intend to still be a member.
Will go to LA Fitness that seems to have gym prices (including iniation and all those fees) at $20 a month, or do the Joan Kroc Center if they will not make me pay the $99 sign up fee and just the $34 a month membership. Not worth the $ unless you want to workout before 8AM or after 9PM.
Pros-
- It's 24 hours but I think on the weekends it closes at midnight
- Very nice cardio room
- The air conditioning feels nice
- Cardio Theatre (but someone always beats me to the machine I want)
- Helpful staff. After some red tape they were able to give me 3 months membership at $18 each, and then for the last the regular price
- Sauna
- Free internet access on the computers there
- The pool
Cons-
-They suggest you have to be there 30 minutes early to sign up for a class...
-Pay for parking (yeah I know it's only $1 an hour but I am paranoid and pay $2 and if you go 4x a week it adds up) or hope you can find street parking at odd hours
- Needs more ab machines (I think they have 2, maybe 3)
- $39 for people that aren't students or community members
Pros or Cons Depending on You:
- Juiceheads and woo girls exercising
- Please move the rowers from all the way in front of the cardio room in front of the mirrors (I don't want to see myself when I work out), to somewhere else
- I am used to going naked in the steamroom but all the girls that go in are fully clothed?? I don't get it. -

This place is legit.
4 Basketball Courts, an Aquatic Complex, Bowling, Gigantic Weight Room, Dozens of Cardio Machines, AND Rock Climbing.
What else could you want? This place is always clean, it has friendly employees, and if you're a student, its relatively cheap.
It's obviously going to be crowded from around 4PM-8PM, seeing as how its located on campus. Don't let that turn you away from the ARC though, its great.
If you love to play basketball, this is the place for you. The courts can become crowded, and you see your fair share of douche bags trying to start fights, but other than that its a great place to get a run in.
Overall, the ARC is clean, up to date, and convenient. -
Review from Steph L.
Great facility, all the latest equipment and the pool is brand-new and included in the monthly fees...I would pay $25 per month just for use of the pool--it's that awesome. Once you sign up at the ARC, if you pay with electronic withdrawl your payment will stay the same forever. My sister joined in 1997 and STILL pays $11 per month...cool concept, I think.
I really appreciate that it's open 24 hours, there is a rock climbing wall, the staff is friendly, and the place is clean. I just hate that September-June every year, you have to wait 10 minutes to get on a bike or elliptical because the SDSU students are talking on their cell phones and working out at the same time. -

I've been a member of 24 hour since 2001, Bally's from 1997-2001, and LA fitness before that. The ARC is my absolute favorite! I still go to 24H since my membership is only $8. I just can't turn down the convenience the ARC offers when I am on campus. Also, the tiny, 3 lane dirty pool at 24H just wasn't cutting it. The ARC's aquaplex is the best pool facility I've ever seen. EVER.
At the ARC there are so many cardio machines that when there is a line, it goes by quickly. A membership allows access to group fitness, the aquaplex, the rock wall, and much more.
The staff is very helpful. There is towel service. I love towel service; I always forget my towel at 24H and I'm screwed. Not here!
It's always clean and clutter-free thanks to their effective policies. I'm a bit surprised that they do not allow Bikam's five-finger shoes, but hopefully they will review the research soon enough and change that policy.Listed in: Fitness fun

The ARC is a great way to get fit! Tons of cardio equipment, two huge weightlifting areas, and an array of classes offered in two big studios. They've also got basketball courts, and tennis courts, not to mention the huge Aquaplex across the street, which is included in your membership fees.
But the best part is their short-term contracts -- only a 4-month minimum, then you can cancel at any time after that. The staff is super friendly and always very helpful, and they keep the place sparkling clean! Such a refresher from the dingy Bally's in Mission Valley I used to belong to.
If I had to pick something that isn't so great, it's probably that since I work full-time, I end up going after work around 5ish, and it's hoppin' with people. So the machines sometimes have a wait time, and the classes at that time tend to fill up pretty quick. But that's expected with any gym, really. And it's not like you have to wait for hours -- a few minutes, at most.
I highly, highly recommend the ARC. Even for non-students, the prices and minimal contract obligations are very attractive, and once you start going you'll be hooked. Get a move on! -
Review from Mikey H.
WOW hell must have froze over because I went yesterday.
I have been a member since 2000. I agree that if you do decide to attend SDSU, join. No contracts or initiation fee. When I joined, I paid $12 a month. Since they added the cool Aquaplex, I now pay $14 a month. The only thing that sucks is the parking, especially at the beginning of the semester. Permits are $135 per semester and $90 during the summer. I did the math, and it's about equal or a little less than the other fitness centers. I buy a permit because I've organized partnerships between two of the colleges and my school, or maybe it's the fact that I am a perpetual student. ;~)
Huge weight machine area, free-weight area, and some of the best cardio machines, which they maintain and upgrade on a regular basis. It's been a while since I've taken classes, but they offer something for everyone. They use to have this kickass class called Stomp. The instructor, Walleska, used to make us sweat and just kick our asses! It was a 40 minuted group class done on stairmasters. After she left, it was never the same, so I stopped going.
I've never had a personal trainer there, but Randy is one of the best because he has a long waiting list of people wanting to train them. He is Walleska's trainer and she has a rock hard body. I've met Kenny and from what I've seen, he's a really good trainer. They both treat their clients well.
Pretty much everything that has been said here I agree with. I do wish they opened early on the weekends, like 6 or 7. Most of the students don't get up that early, so there's never anyone there in the early morning hours. Forget the late afternoons...there's tons of "hos" working out...LOL!...male and female....LOL! I mean, come'on...just workout, use the machine, and move on.
They also offer a variety of rec classes like ju-jitsu, tennis, and running. As an ARC member you can bowl for free at the Aztec Center on campus. You can also get your CPR/First Aid certification here as well.
Overall, this is a great place to work out at. I only wish I had the time to take more advantage of this place.Listed in: Taking care of your body

This is a nice gym. But I must say, I need to come here more often considering the amount of reviews I have for restaurants hehe.
This place has tons of stuff to do. Multipurpose gym, cardio, weights, you name it, it's here. The aquaplex is now open, but I'm not too big on gigantic public swimming pools. They also offer group workouts and classes. I use that room when it's empty to practice dancing though =)
Cardio area could get really packed sometimes though. -

Although I was never a student at SDSU (I chose a large private school up in L.A. with a good football team), I am SO happy to share in the Aztec experience as a member of the gym. I pay a little over $30 a month which provides me with clean and up-to-date gym equipment, the newest cardio machines, a large selection of group classes (from spinning to strength training), access to basketball courts, wii fit (wha?) and access to the beautiful Aquaplex.
Although I'm probably mistaken for one of the SDSU professors (I like to think a suave T.A.), its great motivation to work out amongst the "youngsters" and push oneself even harder to keep up with (or surpass) their youthful pace.
From my experience with San Diego gyms (24 HR Fitness and Pure Fitness), the ARC provides me better quality machines and more classes for a fraction of the cost. Why isn't everyone in SD working out here? -
Review from Dan S.
San Diego, CA
Keeping this short: I've been to many different gyms (over a dozen 24 Hours and at least 2 private gyms) and this is the best actual facility that I've been to. There are a number of issues that keep it from being a paradise of working out bliss but it all balances out.
They have everything you could want. The free weight, cardio, and weight machine areas are each individually the size of their own individual gym so while the obscure, "fetish" pieces of equipment (donkey calf raise, anyone?) will occasionally get taken there is at least one duplicate of every popular item available. They even have a rock wall, saunas, basketball courts, and enormous swimming facilities that are less than a block away.
The parking is a mess and that's the only reason this gets -1 star. And, yes, it can get overcrowded during peak hours but no more so than any other gym. Besides, about 60% of the crowd spends more time on their bodies than they do on their education and - while they're incomprehensibly shallow - they certainly look like it. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who says the eye candy is a plus but complains about it being crowded (with too much eye candy) is missing the point.Comment from Amy S. of Aztec Recreation Center 9/19/2011

As an avid member of the ARC for the past 3 years and the only gym I've ever belonged to..the ARC is definitely a second home and what I believe anyone would look for in a gym..
The machines and bathrooms are clean. If you go at the right times (Before 9AM - After 11AM but before 3PM - After 7PM) there's virtually no waiting for machines, and all of the equipment is newer. I love the Cardio Room, with 9 cardio tv screens and little headphone receptors on almost every machine so you can watch your favorites, CBS, MSNBC, FoxNews and ESPN during your cardio workout.
The sauna is great and always neat and clean. There's enough lockers, and although it is recommended you don't have to have a lock for your items. Showers are virtually as clean as can be expected...of course when I need to use them I wear shower sandals (I hope everyone does that..eck)
Its just all around a good, nice, clean, spacious gym. Even after I graduate state, as long as I live in San Diego, I plan to be a member of the ARC!Listed in: Pampered Princess!

I know SDSU has its own reviews, but membership to the gym isn't contingent on being a student or faculty of the school.
As a full-time grad student, and part-time teacher it can be difficult to find time to work out. At the ARC, that's not a problem. There's a plethora of stuff to do, from weights to new machines to a climbing wall.
Though the ARC has all the state-of-the-art bells and whistles, I have to say the group exercise classes are my biggest draw. Treadmills are for pansies. Get your ass to a yoga fusion class and feel the burn. Seriously, that class is the hardest workout outside of competitive swim practice I've ever experienced.
The teachers are really friendly and knowledgeable, and they set you totally at ease, and that's a must especially for a class like yoga.
Also looking forward to the new pool! -

Wonderful facility. The ARC has state of the art equipment and plenty of them. ARC members have access to the Aquaplex (pool area), tennis courts, bowling alley, and classes including many free group fitness classes offered throughout the day. Bathrooms, showers, sauna, and locker room are well kept.
Right now the price for SDSU students is $18 and $40 for others. My husband has gone to many gyms and he says that the two best ones to go to are the ARC and the one on the military base. There is no initiation fee and even if you don't buy a permit for SDSU, there are side streets nearby where parking can be found, otherwise it's a dollar per hour in SDSU's parking structures. Being a student at State, it only makes sense to take advantage of the price but I do live a good 20-25 minutes away and it is definitely worth the drive. My husband and I will keep our memberships here while I'm a student and more than likely continue to go here as long as we're in San Diego. -

San Diego, CA
This is probably the best gym I have ever been to in my life. I have been to countless ones, such as 24 hours fitness and other campuses gyms as well, and the ARC definitely reigns supreme!
If you are an SDSU student, you only have to pay $18 per month for the entire gym plus the aquaplex! For just $18, you get the weight rooms, basketball/volleyball/indoor soccer courts, dance room, fitness classes, boxing/biking room, cardio room, trainers, intramurals, sauna, pool, and more! You can't get a better deal out there. If you're a student, take advantage of what you have!
For Guest Passes, you can sign up for one yourself on the ARC website, both a day and a week pass, or if you have membership you can give a one day pass to a friend of yours (only get one per semester). I wish they allowed a bit more guest passes per semester though. This gym has so much better equipment, courts, etc than other gyms. The staff keep the place nice and clean too!
The atmosphere here is excellent. If you want something to pump you up just come here and see everyone else working their butts off trying to get into shape, and that sight will definitely push you to go harder. I love the weight room and the basketball courts too; for basketball players, I believe the ARC has a lot more better players than any other courts I have been too, especially compared to UCSD's Rimac.
The ARC is the best gym out there. They are open 24 hours a day, except on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays; UC Berkeley's gym is only open until like 10PM everyday! Every gym expects you to bring your own towel, here it's mandatory to have one, but they give out towels for you to use and they always bring out fresh batches of towels often! Take advantage of everything here, you can't get a better deal anywhere else! -

All for $18 a month (student price). So if you go to SDSU or live near by, please come here!

I've been to Ballys, 24-Hour Fitness, L.A. Fitness, YMCA, Police Academy's gym, YMCA, and I've been to gyms on different campuses, but this is by far the best gym I've been to. As a SDSU alumn, the one thing I miss from this school is the ARC!
It has to be one of the most well maintained gyms around. I might have to go as far as saying it sets the standard. Anytime I go to a gym nowadays, I use the ARC as the standard.
$17 as a student and you also get to use the Aquaplex! AWESOME!
What else do you get?
- You get to play video games (wii, ps2/3, etc.) DDR!
- A number of classes ... you name it, we might have it
- Rock climbing/bouldering wall
- Sauna
- Basketball, volleyball, etc.

For San Diego State students it is a no brainer to be an ARC member. It is right on campus so it is easy to get a workout in before, after, or even in between classes. It is even more convineint for those of us who live in the college area. It is only $18.00 a month which is ridiculously cheap and there is not even an initiation fee most other gyms charge. NO CONTRACT either so you can cancel when you feel the need to.
This gym is very new and all the machines are always clean. They have a huge cardio area with about 10 TVs, a free-weight area and a separate weight room mostly for the guys. They are always very well staffed and everything is in tip-top shape.
They have a rock climbing wall, basketball courts, and two rooms that they hold classes in throughout the day starting at 630 am to 7 pm. My favorite ones are Piyo (a mixture of pilates and yoga) and body challenge. This membership also allows you to visit the Aquaplex which has a few pools and tennis courts. Make sure if you decide to go play some tennis that you have "tennis shoes" that are specifically made to play tennis because they won't let you on the courts with ordinary running shoes because they leave marks on the courts. They are very picky about that.
Gym is open 24 hours except they close on Fridays and Saturdays at midnight. The ARC is my favorite gym! You can't beat it.
Oh yeah, almost forgot- the bathrooms have saunas in them! -

This is by far the best gym I've seen. Here are some of the perks:
* affordable $19/month
* rock climbing wall, sauna, tvs, good music, clean
* access to Aquaplex (amazing pool and jacuzzi!)
* free bowling and games (pool, ping pong, etc)
* great discounts at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center
However, it can be sort of a meat market (stupid girls in full makeup wearing a regular bra to work out in) -

* clean bathrooms
* membership to the aquaplex [one of the best pools in SD]
* 3 free games of bowling a day
* rock climbing wall
* free fitness classes
* 24 hour [sunday-thursday] dance studio
* indoor basketball/soccer/volleyball court
definitely worth it if you are in the area. i personally use my membership for the aquaplex and the open dance studio to dance at super late hours of the night. -

LOVE this place. Up to date cardio & fitness machines. I love the free classes that are included with the membership including spinning classes, kick boxing, yoga, pilates, zumba, hip hop & more! The only downside is it can get SUPER packed on weekdays. Sometimes you have to sit and wait for a certain machine, but its so worth it. Weekends -- ehh not so much. Parking can be a HUGE pain though. I'm not a student, but I live about 5 minutes away. The $39 a month is just as much as you'd pay for other gym memberships, and they dont even compare to this place and the amenities you get with it. It's clean & they have computers, and a wii. whhhaat! love it.

If you go to SDSU, then GET AN ARC MEMBERSHIP. Hands down. $17 a month, too crowded sometimes, but are you really gonna pass on the eye candy???

One of the nicest college rec centers I've ever been to. Even better than the 24hr fitness super sport I go to back home. Tons of cardio machines, weights, bench presses(6 flat, thats unheard of). Super cheap at $17/mo if you go to state and you get free intramurals. I do football and basketball each semester so I already get my money's worth there. It doesn't hurt that SDSU has a very fit student body, man they always catch me lookin in during yoga class.

Throughout my undergrad at State, I was an ARC member! Loved it! Love the gym, love the rock wall, love the yoga classes, and ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Aquaplex!! Now that I'm in grad school at State, with a 24 hour fitness membership, I can't help but continue to long for the SDSU Aquaplex. It's so clean and beautiful. I love swimming in the cold air and seeing the beautiful clear San Diego sky... and then after a great workout, soaking in the hot tub... ahhhh... I just love it.. can't help it.

I can work out without being bothered. If you aren't a student, its a little pricey but its worth it. You can rock climb, bowl, and go swimming for one price. Gets kind of crowded when school is in session but other than that I think it's a great gym.
