I have stayed at this Ayres Hotel location three times now and would recommend it to anyone.  Rooms are consistently clean and spacious, with nice towels, couches, and work space (table and desk chair).  The wireless internet is dependable and fresh cookies are served at the check-in desk every day at 5.  Best of all - the Ayres is totally affordable!  A surprising value really.

Sure, some of the decorations in the hotel make you wonder if what you are seeing is nice or just a bit gaudy.  They're probably both, but who cares?  The Ayres also has a great courtyard with a fountain.  Just don't try to drink outside beverages there or you'll risk getting a scolding from the folks working at the bar.  All in all though, the staff at the hotel is very friendly and accommodating.

Did I mention the free breakfast?  Eggs, potatoes, french toast, oatmeal, fruit, muffins.  Be sure to include that in your calculations when you are deciding whether to stay here or at the junky motel with its "continental breakfast" for 10 or 15 dollars less per night.

If there is one thing I could change at the Ayres though it would definitely be the pillows, which have waaay too much give.  Not nearly firm enough.  It is also true that you can hear planes overhead pretty clearly, but it takes a much lighter sleeper than I to be awakened by them.

I was about to give this hotel 5 stars - I mean free parking, free AWESOME breakfast, free wifi and a very clean spacious rooms. It's perfect!

HOWEVER, at 7am I was scared out of my mind and sleep - by the airplanes taking off... its a little too close to John Wayne Airport. But for the price this can't be beat in the area.

They also have a guest reception 5-7pm and you get one free cocktail.

very close to a wedding we had in newport.  a far cry from the $650/nt the resort was asking, and we dropped $60/nt instead.

it is what it is, has free breakfast, has clean rooms that are semi suites, and as expected its kind of gaudy . . . but hey, its cheap, clean, and serves its purpose.  i'd stay here again, the staff is friendly.

We stayed here the night of our wedding. We had a nice big suite, and it was nice and cozy.  They were very accommodating. The only reason I won't give a 5 star rate is because they had NO room service! It was Saturday night, after our wedding, we were STARVED, and the kitchen was closed. BOO. Dominoes pizza helped that out. Big free breakfast spread in the morning downstairs, however, so that made up for it.  I'd stay here again.

We stayed here as it was very close to our convention and was quite reasonable at less than $100 a night. If you like old-world European decor, this place is for you- full of ship models, gilded things, and tapestries.

I appreciated that the room was impeccably clean and didn't smell. You know how sometimes your non-smoking room smells like a chain smoker had been the last inhabitant? Or it smells like Lysol overkill? Gloriously, it smelled like neither. The beds were very comfortable (we were disappointed that they put us in a double queen room when we had reserved a king) and the down pillows were plentiful.

The courtyard near the restaurant was cute. They serve a breakfast buffet in the restaurant until 10 am on weekends. Just go to the hostess podium, and they'll have a list of registered guests there. They have cereal, really good hot oatmeal, waffles, scrambled eggs, ham, potatoes with bell peppers, toast, juices, milk, coffee, muffins, and mixed fruit. The service for breakfast was quite good, and they kept things clean and well-stocked. We would definitely stay here again.

We hosted our 2008 Women's Retreat at this Ayres location and it was awesome.
Sheri and Dawn are so helpful and their team of catering and special events staff are very accommodating and helpful.

I highly recommend them for retreats and other events. The facilities are very clean and nice and it's in a good location. Our church is in Torrance, so Costa Mesa was just the right amount of distance away from our usual habitat.

They also have great retreat packages that really help the budget for the event. It really made things affordable for our ladies.

Like other reviewers, my friends and I were drawn to the Ayres from the price and free breakfast and shuttle service. We stayed there for a wine auction. The decor is great and the staff is really nice. However, if you're not directly dealing with the staff, the service sucks.

For example, we ordered room service and like other hotels, after you are done, you just leave it outside the door and someone will pick it up right? That didn't happen at the Ayres. In fact, even if we saw staff walk by our room a bunch of times, no one thought to pick up the food. When we checked out the next morning, it was still there. In addition, the keys kept deactivating. We only stayed at the hotel overnight and had to reactivate our keys twice.

Furthermore, a staff member knocked on our door and as I went to go open it, she just let herself in. As Stephanie Tanner would say, HOW RUDE! She did apologize and said she was "just checking", but I thought it was very unprofessional.

The food at the hotel is terrible, too. I ordered an angus burger for room service and it was sooooooooooooo salty. The breakfast was meek, too, but I can't really complain about that because it was free.

Overall, I think I'll shell out a little extra to stay somewhere nicer.

I'm staying at this hotel for a friends wedding, hotel appearance is very nice, the room is perfect, good location, beds look comfortable, although i havent slept in it yet.
My mom and I ate at the hotel restaurant, for lunch and it was o.k.
I ordered the reuban sandwich, it was good bread, but the pastrami meat wasnt the best. My mom ordered some chicken sandwich and asian coleslaw, the slaw was fantastic, but the sandwich was horrific! It looked pretty, but she took one bite and said it tasted like freezer burned chicken. Yuck! We complained, and they took the meal off the bill, they were very nice about it!
The service is great here and very accomadating!

Spent New Year's weekend here for a local getaway. Picked this hotel since it was relatively inexpensive and within the local area I wanted. This hotel is located just off of John Wayne Airport's take off flight path. Also there is no shops or activities of note in the immediate vicinity. You have to drive a short to medium distance to hit good restaurants and shopping.

The hotel in general was fine. The public spaces were nicely decorated with a European style courtyard. Since it was December, I skipped the pool and jacuzzi. The staff were very helpful and pleasant.

I stayed in a junior suite in the second building. This building is not attached to the main hotel but is just across the parking lot. The room itself did not seem special at all. There was a small kitchenette with a comfortable couch. The bed was soft, maybe a little too soft for me. But that is just preference. The TV was small and had not been upgraded in quite a while.

The room was rather dark with two small windows with several layers of drapes that kept the light out.

The bathroom was basic with a jet tube. The jet tube worked well but was a little loud. The shower head was broken and it seemed like the shower was peeing on you until I fixed it and got some water pressure.

The complimentary breakfast was in there restaurant. The food was OK, nothing special, just solid breakfast food. There was a  limited selection, though. It was basically: eggs, protein (either bacon or ham), fried potatoes, pancake or waffle, cereal, and muffin or scone. You also had your choice of several juices or coffee.

Overall, I was underwhelmed by this hotel but for the price it was good. If you are a business traveler for Orange County, this would be a possibility if on a budget.

(+):
Complimentary breakfast
Helpful staff
Close to airport

(-):
Underwhelming room
Old TV
Not close to entertainment

(+/-):
Bed too soft
Room was DARK

I came here because the said room in the picture on the website had a separate hot tub in the room.  However upon arrival the stinkin tub was shared with the shower and was on the fairly small side!

Said company (never mind what we wanted the hot tub for) and I were still able to have fun, but probably will return to the Chase Suites next time as their hot tubs are twice as large in size, too bad it was Friendship Games weekend or we would have just gone there instead.

Also, on a side note, if you looking for other people with brown skin they don't exist unless they're working in the hotel, go figure, Costa Mesa is super white!

The reasonable prices drew me here.
First glance our room was nice, spacious, comfy bed, clean with a nice leather sofa.

THEN it happened.  I felt like I was on a Travelocity commercial.  There was construction going on just a few rooms away.  I could not seriously believe we were in THE construction zone.

We decided to just ignore it because the construction couldn't honestly keep going on all night.  We didn't even get that far....so we decided to just start getting ready for our friend's wedding reception.  I turned the faucet on and the entire faucet rocket launched in the air because it lost it's seal. Water was flying everywhere.  It was looked like a fire hydrant had just exploded.  After lots of screaming I finally reached the tap and turned the water off.

Needless to say I looked like a drowned rat and we needed another room.  We scurried to the front desk and got "upgraded" to another room in the non construction wing of the building.  Turns out we got the same room that El H. wrote about.  That damn elevator shaft was getting lots of action that night.  We slept poorly only because of the elevator shaft which is unfortunate because the bed was comfortable.

We got up in the morning, skipped the free breakfast and checked out early.   Had to hurry back to San Diego to our own quiet home.  Lights out!  Sleepy time!

Stop #7. Back at home, leaving again.

I got home this same day from San Diego, and I went to dinner at Darya and had a bit too much to drink, so after gorging myself on lamb and filet and rice and wine, I ended up driving down the street and staying at the Ayres.

Feels like Disneyland a bit. Strange cottage/castle style doors. Interesting room motifs. I felt like I was in Disneyland.

Needless to say, I mostly just slept. I still had my luggage from the past two months on being on vacation, so I wasn't worried about not having something. I got there, washed up, and fell asleep. Not much of a stay, but I've stayed at other Ayres locations and I'd say this is pretty much on par, except that it's a bit small and in a less than desireable location. It's still a nice hotel though. Good for what you pay. Very reasonably priced.

The beds are consistently firm with nice bedding and warm blankets. Leather sofa, coffee table, sitting area, night stands, marble sink separate from the shower, separate sink in room with counter space, coffee maker, and fridge. All Ayres supply refrigerators. Most also supply microwaves.

All Ayres locations offer complimentary evening refreshments and breakfast buffet every day to all guests.

It was a pleasant night's rest, then off I was again. Half alseep and dehydrated, I actually head for home, only to pack up again.

I don't need free cookies.
I don't need down comforters.
I don't need two swimming pools or a free breakfast buffet.

You know what I do need? Free internet connection.  Screw $8.86 per day.  That is lame.

And I need you to program my room key properly, especially when you put me in one of the adjacent buildings, so I don't have to walk back and forth with all of my bags.

And I need you to stop trying to put me in a room behind the elevator shaft every time I stay with you.  Don't even THINK of offering me a room that ends in 83 again.  I am ON to you, Ayres.

I stayed here on a business trip. The hotel was cute in a Country French sort of way. The employees were ALL very friendly, which is rare these days. The room was nice, however, it was very dark. The bed, not too soft, not too firm. There was a refrigerator and coffee maker in my room along with a leather sofa. I even had a little chair inside my shower, which I didn't use. The complimentary breakfast was good, however the coffee was bland. There was a group of seniors staying the same time I was there (they're so active in the morning). It seems like their kind of place. I think I would stay here again and I'm not even a senior.

We stayed here a couple of nights while our house was tented for termites.
It is really close to the airport but I wasn't bothered by plane noise.  The rooms were pretty big and clean.  They were decorated kind of French-antique ish.  There was a complimentary breakfast buffet they the family loved.

Staying here was one of the most heartbreaking experiences I have ever had. My sister booked about 15 rooms for all the out of town guests for her wedding here including our immediate family so she could stay with us the night before the wedding... we were so excited and the hotel was beautiful, we all agreed she could not have chosen a better spot. Well the night before her wedding all of our previous impressions turned sour. It turns out they have huge parties EVERY weekend in the indoor courtyard which every room surrounds and they neglected to tell my sister this when she arranged the rooms. This particular night it was a motocross party with a huge sound system and speeches then they turned on blasting music with booming amps till around 11:30 when finally after all the calls from our elderly guests, parents of young children and my crying sister they had the music to be turned down not that this stopped the drunk partiers staying at the hotel. I am one of the most patient and calm people you will meet and my experience requesting help at the front desk to move rooms or find any sort of solution for my sister to be able to sleep the night before her wedding led me to crying out of frustration and almost yelling at the woman who showed not 1 ounce of interest in helping me or even feeling sorry for our situation. When my sister initially went down calmly to ask what the party agenda was and how they could re arrange some of the rooms of her guests they had the nerve of just turning their nose with attitude and basically saying deal with it, no room change option, no ear plugs offered, not even an apology out of sympathy or for neglecting to tell her about the party when booking so many rooms. I had to watch my amazing sister cry herself to sleep in my lap because she felt sorry for her guests and she herself could not sleep the night before her wedding.. she should have been the happiest girl in the world that night! I can not even express how rude we were treated when asking for any form of assistance; it's really a shame because this is a beautiful hotel with great potential for a wonderful stay.

We stayed here as it was the host hotel for the nearby Scrapbook Expo at the OC Fair/Events Center. While we didnt go to the Scrapbook Expo, I had business with another vendor, so decided to take advantage of the rate (and actually just booked off their site instead).

we arrived right at check in time, checked in to our room dropped our luggage and went about our business. As we came back to shower/change for dinner, there was a bit of a ruckus in the lobby (we were on the 2nd floor just off the lobby mezzanine), when some guests were given a one bed room rather than the 2 beds they requested (isnt this usually NOT guaranteed). It was enough of a ruckus that the police were called (5 cars later), so once we got passed the shouting, it was a quiet evening.

Parking kind of sucked, we had to park in front of a dumpster, as there wasnt a spot to be had in either the inn or the suites building. Knocked off a star for this.

We passed on the complimentary buffet as we chose to go for a run on the beach and get coffee and by the time we got back breakfast was over.

The bed was pretty comfy. The wireless internet (you have to find it thru your card, they note it as wireless on the website, but the guest services book notes it as 'dsl' thru the dataport) wasnt bad, and was free. The couch a nice touch.

I love the boutique hotels, and will definitely stay at an Ayres again!

The rating for this hotel was tough.

UPS:
- This hotel is beautifully designed and the gym, although small, got the job done.
- The beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept in (down comforter, soft pillow, etc).
- They offer breakfast included in the price.

DOWNS:
- I stayed here because I was attending a friends wedding.  The group I was traveling with was coming from NorCal.  We booked a 2 room suite for the whole bunch so we could have privacy.  At a little before 10pm my friend called the hotel to notify them we were on our way and would be arriving late.  The hotel staff said they would note our late arrival in their computer.  At 12:45am we strolled into the lobby to check in (by this time ALL we wanted to do was SLEEP).  We were then told that they GAVE AWAY our room!  The gentleman at the front desk had no excuse for doing so and said he was "only the night clerk" and we would have to take it up with management in the morning.  So, this night we slept all together in one room (2 queen beds).
The following morning we walked down for breakfast and got ANOTHER hassle.  The line cook asked for our room number and when we told him he said he only had 2 people listed in that room (vs. the 3 we had checked in with).  He called the manager over and instead of instantly fixing the matter he harassed us with a unhelpful attitude for a few minutes.  Even with explaining our situation hours before he didn't offer us any resolution.  FINALLY after 5 minutes of going back and forth his attitude changed and he said he'd take care of the matter.
Following breakfast we went to speak to the manager to see what they could do to fix the room situation.  After telling our story to 3 different managers they moved us to an "upgraded" executive suite and gave it to us for the Friday night rate.  They told us that the room was available but not clean so they would "put a rush on it" and deliver the keys to our room to make the switch.  After 1 hour of waiting we called the front desk and they said they would call us back with an update.. but didn't.  After 2 hours of waiting we rolled out luggage to the lobby and told them we were tired of waiting for the new keys and would be happy to take the room as is.

Overall I would stay this hotel is a nice places to stay and sleep but the staff is certainly not on the ball about things.  If you're simply seeking a place to rest your head then this is a great hotel but if you're seeking a stress free stay -- keep looking!

Where do I begin.  Huge suites, sound proof walls, ample parking for the rental rocket Hertz was dumb enough to let me off the lot with, nearby golf course and driving range (it's a horrible pun, but drunk driving is actually pretty fun).  Plus, this is the closest place with any stars worth noticing to Fury (which is an amazing night club).  Three blocks away and no cops in sight.
