The Ayn Foundation is a New York-based arts organization that established this space in Marfa because the founder believed that the city was well-represented with sculptors, but not major painters.  As a result, the building is divided into two spaces--one with several of Andy Warhol's Last Supper paintings, the other with contemporary artist Maria Zerres' series called "September Eleven".

It was kind of surprising to run into Andy Warhol paintings in Marfa, Texas, especially as I wasn't aware he'd painted anything to do with the Last Supper, but just by looking at it, you know it's Warhol thanks to the tongue-in-cheek juxtaposition of pop culture references.  Next door, Maria Zerres' paintings chronicle her experience of living through September 11th through childlike eyes.  The painter, though a part-time New York resident, was living in Germany at the time of the attacks and this was her way of processing what had happened to her beloved city.

Though small, the Ayn Foundation's spaces reminded me of a mini-Menil, thanks to the subject matter and the building's soaring spaces.  Hours change by season, so check the website.  It's worth a stop on the line of galleries and spaces in Marfa.
